[Music] we respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land upon which the carmelite monastery ganelaba is built the widgible wible peoples of the bunjalong nation who have walked and cared for this land for thousands of years and their descendants who still maintain these spiritual and cultural connections [Music] r [Music] joy in the name of the father the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you we've just begun lent and today's our first sunday in lent and we place before the lord in this season of lent all the troubles that the world is facing in our own diocese in particular here in lismore the terrible floods in europe the conflict in ukraine and in so many other places the world is in turbulence and turmoil and in lent we bring all of this to god and in our own prayer and penance and fasting pray that the lord will attend to the needs of his people lord jesus you are mighty god and prince of peace lord have mercy lord have god and son mercy mary christ of mercy you are word made flesh and splendor of the father lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue these pursue these effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priests shall take a paneer from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramaican he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he came a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted our slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am in trouble he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me lord when i am in trouble they shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone on the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the land the young lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am in trouble his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me lord when i am in trouble a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many asked for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] that comes from [Music] king of endless glory [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for forty days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a leaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and glory of those kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here the scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus said to him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exalted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord what a terrible beginning of lent throughout the world in our own diocese of lismore our town on monday was completely flooded almost thousands upon thousands of people evacuated to evacuation centers shops empty of food petrol stations empty people despairing and now that the levels have fallen the people going back to their homes and their shops and finding that they've got absolutely nothing left it's not peculiar to lismore as lent begins because this began in queensland from the archdiocese of brisbane down to my own diocese of lismore and from there down to maitland newcastle sydney parramatta broken bay wollongong and below the whole of the east coast of australia is in deluge flooding so much suffering but it's not just us go to another part of the world to europe where people fear the outbreak of another major war a country full of innocent people being bombarded invaded and attacked and we go back beyond that to earlier on sometime since since easter last year an attempt to to look at climate change which is perhaps what's behind what's happening on the east coast of australia and the delegates not being able to settle on something to effectively help the world in its present predicament so lent begins with us all feeling quite helpless being oppressed and overburdened with a spirit which lacks hope this is where we find ourselves at the beginning of lent this year in today's gospel we find jesus led into the desert and being tempted and when we look at the gospel carefully what's behind the temptation if you are the son of god if you and it's almost as if the devil is saying things depend upon you and who you are do something about it and the power is twofold first of all jesus was tempted by these things and secondly his response was i don't matter it's not about me it's about god as we look at lent coming to us and see what's happening in our world we are all tempted we are tempted not to believe in god because how can god allow this to happen we attempted to despair we are tempted above all else in such a way that we will lose the gift of hope in fact the temptations that are presently in the world move us away from hope and therefore away from life why does that happen we see it in today's gospel it didn't happen to jesus because jesus didn't rely or depend upon himself we live in a world which over the centuries has got to the point where i can do anything we can do anything we can go to the moon we can go to mars i am everything and now the world everywhere's face with a dilemma there is nothing that i can do and if the thinking was i could do everything then i now despair and the temptation which comes my way is a temptation in a way like jesus's try and do something yourself and when you find you can't you will lose heart and you will be hollowed out from the inside there will be nothing there and that in fact is my fear for the world today in the temptations which we face because the temptations come from falsehood i'm only the bishop of lismore i can't do anything i have no authority i have no power the only thing i can do is turn to god if i was to turn to myself and depend upon myself i would fall by the way because of this temptation the beginning of lent says to all of us do not be tempted against hope because hope is your only refuge it's the only thing to save us to take us forward because it's the only thing at this time which will ensure that we hold on to god because if we try to solve the issues of the world as if i could we're doomed and the tempter knows this he knows that we cannot but if we have hope then with god god can do anything and everything through us so as we start lent let your penance be the acceptance with all humility of our own inabilities and through that allow the works and the things we do in lent to put us in the correct relationship to god it's not as if any penance i could do could do anything for anybody but anything that i can do which puts me in the correct relationship hope-filled relationship with god allows god to do all the things god wants to do which i in my pride thought that i could do myself and let's stand and profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting army the gospel tells us that our lord went to face his temptations in the wilderness let us pray to god for our needs that led by the pope and bishops the pilgrim church may proclaim the word that is the faith let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all peoples may share equally in the abundance of the fruits of the earth let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that men and women with moral weaknesses may receive the grace to resist the tactics of the devil let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we will never put god to the test let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our dead may dwell forever in the shelter of the most high let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let us pray for the many who are suffering at this time in the floods devastating the east coast of australia that the lord will ensure that they do not lose hope that they may have the courage to strive on to put their lives back to what they used to be let us pray to the lord [Music] and that the sender of all good weather will send good clement weather to us here in australia let us pray to the lord heavenly father we make these and all our prayers through christ our lord [Music] o lord of my heart [Music] is [Music] may i be [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father grant us right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] of love heaven and earth are full of your glory blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me your unworthy servant and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles saint teresa saint john of the cross and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name r [Music] give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and coming of our savior jesus christ the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you [Music] the always have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world of mercy on us [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am one does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] lord jesus christ we remember when [Music] is [Music] and glorifies thy grace and let us pray o lord renewed with the heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord the lord be with you and bow your heads and pray for god's blessing
