on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits the produce of the soil that you lord have heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god let us stand to welcome the gospel [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for 40 days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loft but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time or the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for has been committed to me and will give to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and served him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says you will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters in christ today we enter the first sunday of land at the very beginning of the first sunday of land the church gives us a preview of what is to come and what we are called to do because there could be a great temptation for us to go through land without having a clear objective is going through the motion of the spiritual exercises that the church recommends us without knowing what is the ultimate goal that land expects of every christian certainly the season of land is not meant to take away our life think with the joy of living rather the season of land is to prepare us so that we can live life to the fullest and this life to the fullest comes about when we recognize our true identity as sons and daughters of our lord my dear brothers and sisters the season of land is to prepare us to recite the creed the christian creed with full conviction and sincerity for only that compassion of faith in christ will be able to set us free from our sins and for this reason both scripture readings the first and the second that have been chosen for this sunday celebration concerns the creed the first reading from the book of deuteronomy with the creed of the israelites moses told the people especially joshua that when they entered the promised land which the lord was going to give to them at every harvest festival what must they do they must renew their profession of faith they must recite the cradle that was given to them in today's first reading what is the cradle the cradle was simply a summary of how the lord had led the people of israel to the promised land beginning from the founding fathers they were nomads they were wandering in the desert with abraham and then isaac and jacob it was a small community they were the chosen people and from the chosen community small in number they went out to egypt because of joseph from there they grew in number until pharaoh felt threatened by them and they began to be tortured by pharaoh ill-treated as a consequence they cried to god and god sent moses to deliver them from their slavery in egypt and after that they went through the desert and now they were at the threshold of entering the promised land and they saw how the lord delivered them the lord heard our voice saw misery our toil our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm with great terror with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land this cradle must be recited annually the people need to renew their faith so that the future generations will never forget what they were called to do as a people of god how they should lift according to the commandments that god has given to them so that they could could continue to live in the promised land free from their enemies and in prosperity and in peace and they must confess precisely that god is their lord the confession of faith in god as our deliverer is of course brought to fulfillment in the christian testament in the second reading we have the letter of simple to romans and he gave us the creed of the christian what is the creed of the christian simple says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved this is the fundamental confession of the christian it is jesus death that would deliver us from our sins it is jesus sacrifice on the cross that has given us redemption it is his resurrection that has won for us new life in the eternal jerusalem the true promised land and that is why for the christian the fundamental confession is that jesus is lord jesus is god and this confession of faith in jesus as lord and god is rooted in a very fact that he was raised by the father it is the resurrection of our lord that gave us a conviction that jesus is our savior he is the new moses he's the one who has delivered us from our sins and given us new life but this confession of faith simple makes it clear it is not just an ideological confession it is a confession of faith right from our hearts by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved so it is a heartfelt conviction it is not some intellectual knowledge some verbal confession that jesus is lord that cannot save this unless the confession of faith comes from the depth of our heart so it's very important therefore to ask ourselves do we truly believe that jesus is lord and savior in our hearts because if we truly believe that jesus is lord and savior then it will be manifested in the way we lived it will be manifested not just in words but indeeds otherwise the confession of faith is empty so there are many of us for this reason can be baptized but you know there is no real change of life they're not living the catholic way of life they're not living the gospel life because it's just a very superficial confession of faith it is not a conviction from within it is not an experience of the risen lord in our life and so the faith is very weak that kind of faith cannot save us that is why we have many who are baptized pagans because their lips confess jesus their life is pagant this confession of faith in jesus lord is critical that is why in today's gospel you notice the temptations of the devil is about jesus through identity we know that jesus stripped himself of his divinity and became man to lead the way to show us that it is possible to live a life of love a life of truth as a man and so jesus was a man like this in all things and he was also tempted like us all and we take note of the temptations twice the devil said to jesus if you are the son of god turn the stone into a loaf if you are the son of god throw yourself down for the scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you if if the devil wanted jesus to hesitate his identity he was testing jesus confidence in himself and in his heavenly father he wanted jesus to prove that he is the son of god and to test the father to see whether the father will save him but jesus refused to test his father because he knew who he is and that is the reason why many of us you notice we are so insecure we always need to prove ourselves those who are insecure are always trying to prove themselves to let people know they are very good they are very capable if you know yourself there is no need to prove that is going to blow your trumpet of who you are if you are confident of yourself if you know your identity if you know your talents you just leave it out insecure people are always trying to prove themselves that's why they are never happy no matter how talented they are always trying to prove themselves they have no self-confidence their confidence comes from the clay mission of the people my dear brothers and sisters today we are invited therefore to take our baptismal vows seriously you notice the scripture readings today are making allusions to the sacrament baptism in the first in the second reading when saint paul says all those who believe in him who have no cause for shame for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved these were the very words that saint peter used at pentecost on that day 3000 were baptized this allusion to sacrament baptism is a reminder that this is what land is preparing us so that we will be able to confess with conviction that jesus is lord and that we will be able to enter into the death of jesus and rise with him because it is the basket mystery that saved us the passion death and resurrection of the lord the sacrament of baptism is a re-enactment so to speak second baptism is to make jesus muscle mystery really in our lives dying to sins rising to a new life that is what the baptism is all about so that we become sons and daughters of god and in the gospel the three temptations of jesus the same christians will be asked of us on easter vigil or insta sunday when we are called to once again renew our faith in jesus first by renouncing satan the world and sin that is why jesus showed us the way you shall worship only the lord your god and no one else and so i asked you my dear brothers and sisters as we begin this season of land as we begin this journey will we be able to have the confidence to regain our identity as sons and daughters of god because over the days over the year we have forgotten who we are we live like the world we live like pagans we have holy values although we say we are christians even the devil my dear brothers and sisters he can cite the scripture for his own purpose we do we twist and turn the word of god to suit our preference not because we believe in god we twist and turn like the devil and we need to be very careful because that is what the lord is asking us are we true to ourselves if we submit to jesus simply because he is lord and he is the word of god in person if you truly believe in jesus you believe in all that he has taught us we will subscribe like saint paul and jesus you notice jesus cited the word of god three times into this gospel simple cited twice scripture says if you want to be confident of living and a christian life regaining our sonship to be proud of our sonship to be able to declare to the world we are sons and daughters of god we are christians then my dear brothers and sisters we need to ground ourselves in the word of god meditate on it braver it share it but most of all we need to lift out the word of god only in this way my dear brothers and sisters can we truly arrive at easter with this clear conviction of jesus as our lord and savior amen let us profess the apostles greed during the season of land and easter as well because this is where we renew our faith our basic creed which is the apostles greed with one we profess at baptism i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen as a community of believers let us present our needs to the lord who throughout the ages it's been the covenant of love and faithfulness with his people let our response be lord hear our prayer for the church that she be a beacon of hope as we begin this season of lent let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our pope francis our archbishop william priests and religious of our archdiocese and all who teach god's word that they continue to proclaim the need for repentance and ongoing conversion and their message reach christians everywhere let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the people of ukraine and world leaders who are involved in bringing an end to the conflict between russia and ukraine that hope still reign in this time of trial and those in power be moved by the mercy of jesus to work for lasting justice and the common good of all peoples let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for christians everywhere that we recommit ourselves to our baptismal call this lenten season and to god's gift of salvation to all believers let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our departed brothers and sisters those known to us and those whose faith is known to god alone that they rest in peace in the everlasting life that awaits us all let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our community of worship that we enter into this lenten season of prayer fasting and arms giving with open hearts that desire to resist the temptations of comfort wealth and power let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and so we also pray for own intentions we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god our father you alone do we worship only your word gives the fullness of life sustain your church on this lantern journey when we walk through the wilderness of temptation strengthen us to renounce the power of evil when our faith is tested by doubt light up our hearts through the promise of the resurrection we ask this through christ our lord amen let us pray the atsumu spirituals as we invite the holy spirit to work in us to embrace the sinona process and become a people of grace on our sinato journey we stand before you holy spirit as we gather together in your name with you alone to guide us make yourself at home in our hearts teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it we are weak and sinful do not let us promote this order do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions let us find in you our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right all this we ask of you who are at work in every place and time in the communion of the father and the son forever and ever are men [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] and does god [Music] oh pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church give us the right disposition oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time we ask this through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lantern observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the levant of malice so that celebrating worldly the past mystery it might pass over at last to the eternal baskerfeast and so with the company of saints and angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] [Music] you're indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather people to yourself so that from the rising the sun to his setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is mine body we should be given up for you in a similar way when supper was entered he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore lord as we celebrate the memory of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection ascension to heaven as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim but who's there if you will to reconcile us to yourself run that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance of your elect especially the most blessed virgin mary mother of god you bless the jews of her spouse will you blessed of horses and sisters and brothers in christ remember jesus said i am the bread of life i invite you to take the word bread and let it give you life so be begin the day with your beloved as you wake up after you've done your routine maybe just before breakfast or maybe just after breakfast sit down say a short prayer and then we have our routinely read the word of god pick up the bible read for five minutes sometimes we say i read the bible i'm very difficult okay start with the simple ones what are the simple ones the gospels the stories about jesus i'm sure as you read the stories of jesus the things that he had done and the things that he had said are not so difficult what's the next word e every day even as you pray affirm someone start with the ones that are closest to you now tell me something are you really saying there's nothing good in the one that you call beloved and you know after three days you think to yourself i can't think of anything else you know nothing else to think about never mind repeat the same things at least they know you know that your spouse knows that you always think that she is thoughtful a is attend to the eucharist attentively you know sometimes on sunday because it is recorded you say i will watch it later sisters and brothers you're not going to get anything if you watch because the eucharist while it's there it's empty of you are not there try and make it the first thing in the morning and then while you're watching you know don't press the pause button and then on your computer yeah i forgot to do this homework i forgot to do this send this email no attentively participate indeed donate generously now why do you need to donate generously because donation is moving that prayer into action so we donate to the needs of the church and when we begin to do this what happens is your heart begins to grow when your heart begins to grow even though we are in this difficult situation we can't attend the eucharist physically daily as we would like to as our heart grows we will be able to face the situation as it is not only that grow during these times so form these five good habits and i do wish that you will always have this bread with you so that when you receive the bread of jesus christ the union of communion will be so great because you will be bringing something to the lord as the lord brings his graces his presence to you have a good day [Music] there is much to be grateful for because everything that we are and have god provides because he loves us he created us into one body one church made of many parts so as a church let us continue to ignite and shine our faith may our love for christ and for one another flourish thrive and touch the lives of many people let us support our church's vision to be a more vibrant evangelizing and missionary church you
