hi father paul here at the sunday mass and i want to thank you for tuning in today to celebrate and to pray with us but before we begin our celebration i just want to touch on a little issue or problem that we've been having perhaps in recent weeks and months as you've joined us on youtube or on our website you've seen little ads pop up during the mass first of all i want to personally apologize for this disruption and let you know that this is not of our doing we don't monetize our channel so we receive nothing for those ads but it seems youtube in their policies still continue uh to put ads periodically on the content that we produce we are working very hard to solve this problem and hopefully at some point in the near future at least on our website you'll be able to watch the mass ad-free if you do watch us on the youtube channel and have not already subscribed please hit the subscribe button and become part of the sunday mass faith community on youtube [Music] again thank you for your time let us begin our celebration [Music] welcome everyone to our celebration of the sunday mass ministry of the passionist community it is march 6th and it is the first sunday of lent our celebrant today is father enzo and today is a sponsored mass the sponsor of our mass is monica taylor and her family and their special intentions for the mass today are barbara and john lynden hawker so i would ask you to keep monica her family and the linda hawkers in your prayers today as we celebrate mass if you have your prayer guide take it out turn to the beginning of mass and let us begin our celebration the glory of these forty days we celebrate with songs of praise for christ by whom all things were made in himself [Music] in the name of the father and of the son of the holy spirit amen amen the lord be with you and with your spirit brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus you raise us to new life lord have mercy lord have mercy lord jesus you forgive us our sins christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus you feed us with your body and blood lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursuit of their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramine who went down to egypt and with a small household lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians mistreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our turmoil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord thanks be to god be with me lord be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you and in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and is so justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god praise to you lord jesus [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdom of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for this had been handed over to me and i might give it to whomever i wish and this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone you shall serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest your you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ brothers and sisters we celebrate the first sunday of lent and the first reading from the book of deuteronomy tells us about the feast of the first fruits and during this feast the first fruits were offered back to god in thanksgiving and it kind of anticipates what we do every time during the eucharist and it kinds like shows who god is but also who we are and in fact is a remembrance of how god saved the people in israel of israel from egypt from the slavery in egypt and particularly it is specified who we are we're rendering we are aliens and many times oppressed and gaza god saves us from all that and there's so many people in so many situations and even ourselves that we find ourselves wandering with no direction we don't know what we really want and sometimes we also find ourselves aliens or alienated marginalized let's think of so many refugees this is the story of so many people who suffer finding their discipline no place a new future something to give hope to their children and many times they're oppressed we are oppressed but so many situations that sometimes we don't even realize and um this profession of faith about who not so much who god is but what he does for us we do it every time during the eucharist it's the memorial of what god does for us he lays us down lays his life down for us is risen from the dead and continues to feed us and what lent is really about is not so much us doing something for god but it's actually fasting praying and doing almsgiving in order to really recognize and give thanksgiving to god for what he does for us it's a continued memorial of his works and in fact our founder too saint paul of the cross insisted on really teaching the people the memory of the passion of jesus to really understand what god does for us and then you're able to understand why you should fast why you should pray and why you should be generous towards others and the three temptations in the gospel that we all go through are the temptations of always trying to find an immediate easy solution to for example financial situations we all have thirst of power and we always look for something spectacular we all want to be somehow be famous or recognized we're always looking how many likes we have on our social media pages and uh we always look that to be like popular and the way of jesus instead is different and especially the first temptation when the devil says after 40 days that he's been starving not eating jesus he says you know why don't you just tell these stones to become bread he's hungry well jesus answers back that not only a bread but of every word that comes that comes out of the mouth of god that will really satisfy us and i think that so many times we forget that it's not just enough to serve the poor to do almsgiving to give money or in the shelter so many times we forget that these brothers and sisters are people are persons they have a dignity and sometimes they need friendship they need someone who stopped and talked to them and just a few weeks ago i was in grand central station and i offered to a man a sandwich and some soup and he refused it at the beginning actually he's kind of looking me kind of suspicious wondering what i was looking for and i stayed there i insisted then i just stayed quiet and i you know continued to ask him questions who he was where he came from and he never really warmed up to me and only when i decided to leave and saying you know i really wish you peace he stopped me and he says i really appreciate what you're doing he says i appreciate the fact not that you're giving me a sandwich or some soup but i appreciate the fact that you made me realize today that i'm not invisible you made me realize that i'm a person because so many people pass into the station every day and no one notices me and then he warmed up and he told me his own story his own story of wandering of being oppressed and being alienated and i realized then that probably should open more our eyes our ears and our hearts to really find where god is and to hear and listen his story so during this lent let us fast from the things that probably like oppress us so that our hearts will be open and recognize god and what he does every day for us with confidence in our loving god we begin this journey of lent placing our needs and prayers in his merciful hands we pray for the church that throughout this lenten penitential season we will be a community of faith who trusts in the forgiveness and mercy of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray in thanksgiving for the sponsors of our mass today monica taylor and her family and we remember their special intentions barbara and john lincoln hoker we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the intentions of our benefactors the intentions of the sunday mass faith community that will be placed next to the altar and for susan kendrick for whom we pray in a special way at this mass we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god our strength we offer you these prayers and needs and those that you find in our hearts through christ our lord [Music] to amen with all your heart the source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness of god now the time of grace has come the day of salvation come and learn now the [Music] return to god with all your heart the source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness of god [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord sacrifice your hands for the praise and the glory god's name for our good and the good of all this holy church give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with him we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our during our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by over turning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and everlasting covenant which will be put out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memory of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and robert our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be cursed to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever amen at the savior's command and for by my teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as you await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the lord the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit please offer each other a sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] it comes to rest [Music] through all time from one generation to the next before the [Music] mountains brought forth you are god without beginning [Music] is the heart until it comes to rest in the your all the earth shall remember and return to our god [Music] let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen amen the mass has ended let us
