It is interesting to think that the bland nature of Skyrim might be deliberate. I was previously convinced that this was a sign that the game was rushed for the 11/11/2011 release. I can definitely see how the simple, short, and self-contained quests make for a better open world than Oblivion. However, it seems like Fallout 3 had a world roughly as open as Skyrim but Fallout 3 also had (IMHO of course) better dialog, characters, and quests.
Wouldn't it make sense to have Dragon Age and The Witcher series be one to talk about? Given that they both seem to deal with a lot of the same themes?
I really wish he'd get a better mic and camera. It sounds and looks like he's using a cheap webcam with a built in mic.
That was very long. It's weird trying to comment on something 2 hours long, because I can't possibly address more than a smattering of the things said here.
In general, Noah hits on, and discusses a lot of the themes of these games, flavor, story, etc. But really seems to skirt the mechanical side of them. Was more hoping for those kinds of insights or thoughts, and less on just prettied up discussion of why Skyrim's world "Feels good to play in"
I would just like to say that DA2 had a lot of great elements and it is personally my second favorite bioware game. I think the themes and ideas in that game were far more interesting and original than most fantasy/scifi games
The characters were also really awesome, I found them just as likable as Mass Effect characters.
While I agree with his assessment of the design philosophy of Skyrim (who wouldn't? It's a pretty damn obvious design philosophy and very trivial to notice) I disagree with a lot of his qualitative assessments about whether stuff worked or was well done or was original.
