if you have a landline there's one type of scam which you're going to hear on an almost daily basis hi this is a call from amazon to inform you that your amazon prime account will be auto renewed for 79.99 from your bank account so enjoy using amazon prime services or if you wish to discontinue or unsubscribe services then speak to our amazon service manager by pressing one it's not surprising that scammers will pretend to be amazon almost everyone has heard of them and indeed very many people will have placed orders with them but this is exactly what the scammers are looking for but this type of scam is even more serious than the tech support calls these scammers are after your entire bank account i've been watching some of these groups for more than a month and have been trying to undermine their scams the vast majority of these scam call centers are in the city of kolkata and india particularly in sector 5. under a few variations of this scam sometimes it will be the auto renewal of your amazon prime other times you'll get a call about an iphone or other item ordered under your amazon account dear customer we have detected a suspicious activity on your amazon account an unauthorized purchase of iphone 6s 64 gigabytes has been ordered from your amazon account to cancel your order or to connect with one of our customer support representatives please press one and if you did press one you'd be speaking to someone whose job it is to try and get access to your computer and convince you to log in to your online bank account we can see here the script that every scammer will use whenever they receive one of these phone calls that's a lot of iphone 11 orders yeah oh actually let me inform you that we have received some suspections activities in your amazon account that somebody has tried to order an iphone 11 so that's why we have called you do you know about that uh one minute let me confirm your phone number your phone number is the scammer will see the victim's phone number and they'll claim that this number was used to set up an amazon account that's connect that's correct okay so this is just a confirmation call and we have found that you haven't placed the order right yes that's correct i haven't do do we have any computer or laptop so that we can be able to send you an online cancellation form the computer or laptop is absolutely essential for this scam to work without it they're gonna fail to get access to the victim's bank account no computer no scam so if you're advising any older relatives on how to combat the scam just get them to say they don't have a computer no they don't live here by that no no nobody needs it mr alan woodson he is trying to use your number and your personal details and create a fake amazon account okay so that is why so that is why it is a confirmation call so uh and create a fake amazon account and subscribe the prime membership that is why you have been charged 79 pounds 99 pence so what do you want to do what do you want to do right now it is a confirmation call do you want to would you like to let them use your information or count or would you like to cancel it and refund back your amount what do you want to do honey as i said i i haven't got an account with you at all do you have a computer a laptop uh if you have a computer or laptop we gonna help you and it was amazing just how quickly the scammers hung up when they found out there was no computer you're ringing me off about amazon oh yes ma'am well i don't know what amazon is i've never had any deals okay i'm going to explain you about that okay each and everything uh first of all ma'am can you please tell me do you have any laptop or any desktop with you no i'm 18 year old oh my god then can you please tell me do you have an internet connection okay i have anything i don't know a laptop all i have is okay no problem i'm going to cancel my side okay sorry bye thank you very much of course any requests to be removed from their call list were simply ignored i want to ask you again will you please stop ringing me because i don't order anything from you and i i've never had anything off of you and i don't know why you keep ringing me because i've never had anything from you please tell me that do you know anybody who's named johnson peter johnson no keep try to use and fake amazon prime using your information that's where just a confirmation call would you like to let him use your information or you want to cancel that and want the refund i i don't want anything i just want you to stop ringing me up because i don't have anything off of you but sometimes the way that they load all the phone numbers means that they don't have the full details of the people they're calling what kind of device heard of that number it is your number what address all right so uh do you have a computer or laptop do you have any of the device at your home no no no but it's just a numbers game and eventually they'll find someone who's prepared to believe that they really are amazon and will convince them to log into their online bank account whilst the scammer is connected the next part of the scam is that the iphone or the payment for the amazon prime will be refunded apparently to the victim i'm gonna refund you 399 right right so can you tell me one thing in which account do you want your money to be there you can put it up can you see my money market savings this is your personal information you have entered into your banking so i cannot see anything oh okay page has been made in such a manner it's a 3d page that only the person who is the account holder like basi is the account only basic and save no other person okay right right okay okay so you you want the um the name of the account and the four digits that go with it okay money market savings is the name of it you want it on your money market savings ending with 4586 correct he says he can't see the screen but is able to quote the last four digits just grab a pen and paper in your hand and write down the available balance so that if i'll make a transaction in your account you can easily check it from your end how how much is the increment in your balance the usual line he's about to edit the screen to make it look as if he's put money in hey you know that yeah there isn't a lot of money in that account what he says next tells me there is a lot of experience in trying to steal money from various american bank accounts he specifically knows that a money market account will be difficult to withdraw from yeah but i want to add a little bit more to the money market because usually people those who have money market account it's really tough to deposit money on it and it's really tough to withdraw money from it as i'm telling you because okay well then you know we'll do we'll do that then we can do the checking account checking account and now the real scam begins even though he genuinely logs out of her bank of america account the username and password are cached so he can log in at will but he need to turn on a black screen to make sure she doesn't see what he's doing can you see here i'm signing out from your account in front of your own eyes i'm signing out from your account because this is your account it's been completely signed off can you see okay so what i'm gonna do is that i'm just closing this page it's of no use now a good advert for two-step authentication now it's my turn to simply go ahead and just tell my billing department to make a transfer into your checking account ending with 1758 on his technician on his billing department or just him in the meantime just give me two minutes from this moment the victim only sees the word pc help and that's it finish its work and in the meantime my team will also the billing team also will go ahead and transfer the money to you with her screen blackened he now simply goes back into her bank account and edits the total to make it look as if he's putting money in yes sir i just want to thank you for your patience and your cooperation this can't be easy the way you're cooperating with me the patience level you have the way you talk to me in a polite manner i'm really like appraising your effort and all these things continuously flattering her as he steals her money what are you calling from are you in the united states or is this international united states redmond the washington state kolkata is apparently in washington state yeah yes yes no i know you've met yeah you know the state of washington oh yeah yeah the dc they go they just say dc he then spends the next few minutes figuring out just how much money he's gonna try and steal from her he decides he can get away with twenty thousand dollars so he makes an edit to the page to look as if this money has been added through chase bank we will open up a refund gateway right in front of your eyes by which you can simply go ahead and you can put in your details and get your money right now right away that is the last option which we have and i do believe in this perp in this way you will surely get your money the purpose of this part is to make it look as if they promise her a certain amount but he'll add two extra zeros and blame it on the victim please enter your refund amount the refund amount should be two hundred dollars as i said you we will make the payment in part by part yeah i need a dollar sign or okay hold on and he deliberately types two extra zeros and the script says check balance that's his cue to reveal the edited bank page are you done ma'am i yeah i get i i put it in you put it then are you done with it check everything is it correct uh what happened jesus oh no this is a mistake oh i screwed up jesus jesus what happened the thing which i am saying are you seeing the same thing ma'am of course you are because you set it up that was supposed to be oh there was supposed to be a i'm it was supposed to be a 200 in there i was oh god almighty i'm completely spent you know what keep the freaking money i don't i can't this isn't worth it to me this is not worth it keep the money i'm gonna cry because this because of this silly mistake my job is in stake if i'll not give i'm exhausted i'm exhausted i can't do this my mind is absolutely fried please check your account did you really receive that money in your account oh god please save me oh my god do you have the piece of paper in which you have written down the balance of your account of your checking account so let's hear how he wants that fake money back hello miss bessie yes yes i got an option have you heard about zelia transfer about what seller seller transfer at this point i've called bank of america and i've given them details of what's happening to bessie at least they've managed to suspend the account and prevented any zealot transfers so when he does attempt to transfer her money to one of his accomplices the whole transaction fails and when he finally gets off the phone it's my chance to call bessie and warner that the whole thing is a scam i'm screwed up i made a mistake i put a one dollar amount in for a refund on my okay i can assure you you didn't mess up that is how their scam works they make it look as if they put money into your i didn't know no actually you didn't and i'll explain why and you can double check this with the bank it took me quite a while to explain to bessie what had happened and to remove the screen connect software which the scammer was continuing to use on her computer and for an entire week every time the scammer managed to get someone to log into their bank account i was there behind him calling the victim and warning them that it was a scam it is what can i help you with i'm on another call i know and if you could hang up that call because i know it's a scam and you probably know it's a scam as well um i'll explain how i know this and how you can get your computer back as well um i was worried i'm sorry i'm elderly and i was just very i i know i shouldn't have done it but it's okay anyways that's all right nancy you probably want to switch off your computer because these scammers will constantly call you to try and get money from you um because they try and guide you who who who are you have you hung up the other line in case they can hear um it's dead now okay i can't hear it in fact i was doing this so often that the scammers finally figured out that there was something up with their computer that a mystery caller managed to get through to each of their victims every day in the week they even wrote me a note on screen thinking that i could maybe read it i didn't give him the satisfaction of even replying to it i let him just stew in the thought that someone may or may not have been watching him but a little like me these scammers could watch their victims even though the victims were unaware and they were able to do this through a front end of screen connect so i decided to wipe out the names of all of their victims so they couldn't regain a connection i had to very quickly select all of the victims names and quickly hit the delete key before they could do anything about it [Applause] [Music] [Music] but sadly that was just one of at least 30 different call centers in kolkata alone who are all running the amazon scam with any luck the cbi or the kolkata cyber police will take more action against these scammers i've seen a lot more activity from law enforcement recently and hopefully this will start to bring some of these organizations down please help spread the word about scams particularly to any elderly relatives they are the people who are most likely to fall for the scams if you would like to support me
