and we're back with a quick tutorial on food and food poisoning in rimworld now let's immediately get this out of the way with to prevent food poisoning as simply as possible use a dirt floor early on a dirt floor is your best bet no it sounds crazy but it really is the safest option you will have a tininess there at the bottom of minus one which indicates dirty but minus one is actually perfectly fine for cooking food with no chance of additional food poisoning if you go below minus one then yes it does get worse so if you go to minus 1.1 you're actually going to start increasing your chances of getting food poisoning but on a dirt floor that's really hard the only way you can do that is if you drag blood in there this is why everyone tells you put your slaughtering area outside of the kitchen down here we have two ponds ready to butcher up some animals they'll grab them down here and slaughter them up on these tables as they do you see the blood coming off them well room here is currently at very dirty minus 1.5 namely because of all of the nasty nasty meat and stuff they got left about the place and all of the blood you can see there the minus 10 under that that's blood that's minus 10 over there that's also blood that's also adding to the filtration which why this entire place now is very dirty if you also had your stove in here you're going to be getting a lot of food poisoning quick note while we're here if you use a butcher spot as opposed to a butcher's table you will get less meat and less leather out of every animal you butcher so it's usually a good idea to get up to a butcher's table as quickly as possible now with that out of the way with let's just have a quick over dirt the reason you want to hold off on tiling an area is because of how the dirt mechanics work you'll see here we have this perfectly pristine room the only thing about it is we've got one dirt tile here in the corner the dirt level in here has been averaged out to 0.02 so it's actually quite clean in comparison but if we have uh barkley here walk around the place we'll just have them run run around in circles for a bit this might take a moment oh there we go dirt right there and the reason for that dirt is because they were standing on dirt think about it as the soles of their shoes have collected dirt while they were walking on it and at some point during their travels they're going to drop that dirt off but the thing is once they've done it once they shouldn't drop off any more dirt anymore so what will happen at the start of the game is if you just put a regular floor or a nice floor inside your kitchen everyone who walks in there has a percentage chance of dropping dirt on the floor and every time they go in and out they're going to have another chance of dropping more dirt as well as that dirt can be carried around on the soles of the feet so someone who has dropped off their dirt already can walk across dirt pick it up on the soles of their feet and drag it around to the next location the same with blood gore insect stuff all sorts of things they can all be left behind all right there we go we have two patches of dirt right left on the floor that one here you can actually see it in the bottom right it'll tell you that it's dirt by one dirt can stack up to four that's why you never put floors in here just not until you can floor your whole base once you can floor your whole base then you floor your kitchens and you can floor them with the very nice sterile tile sterile tile is a bit unique in that it gives you sort of a a buffer for you for example this is now 0.36 in terms of cleanliness the reason being the sterile tiles give you a bonus to cleanliness meaning it takes longer before you can overcome the natural cleanliness of the tiles making the room into negatives however there is also one other negative to tiles and we'll show that by making them walk around for a lot longer and that is trash once uh once a pawn has been walking around enough they can actually leave trash on the ground but only if they've been walking on clean tiles or well regular tiles ah there we go that minus four there is trash you can see it in the bottom left so that's trash and that's what dirt looks like so once you put down tiles you have the potential to generate trash from walking across them and at the same time you have the potential to drag in dirt from outside you cannot drag in dirt onto a dirt floor and you cannot generate trash while on a dirt floor one last thing to note is near mountains in places like this you'll see these tiles here these are rough granite and things like that originally you could not generate dirt you could not put dirt on these and you could not generate trash from them as far as they were you still can't generate trash but you can put dirt on them now so building on top of this will not save you build on top of a dirt floor and you're fine one mod that will always get mentioned when it comes to kitchens cleaning and food poisoning is the common sense mod this one tells your pawns to clean your room before they use it for anything for example if they're going to go make medicine they'll actually collect things multiple things all once they do it picks up three items at the same time if they're going to do an operation or something like that they will actually clean the room before performing the operation to increase their chances and even if they're going to sleep at night they'll clean their bedroom before they go to bed this is actually quite nice because this can result in you losing a bonus because you don't have your room has gotten dirty i never use this mod myself but as you can see it comes massively highly recommended next up we're just going to cover food and nutrition one thing to note is all stacks of food when it comes to these 75 stacks they all have a nutritional value of 0.05 so what that means is 10 pieces of this meat will refill the hunger bar of a pond by 50 and if you check your underneath you can see the food bar up here currently there are 20 food meaning they're 80 shy meaning they would need 16 pieces of food to fill up their hunger bar the whole way 16 pieces of this type of food now bear in mind this counts for meat berries even pemmican pemmican also has a nutritional value of 0.05 so all of these 75 stacks oh jelly as well now what we've done here is we've got these two listed here this is just a stack of 150 of meat and 150 of berries now if we were to take either these meat or these berries and cook them up we would get 15 meals and these 15 meals would give us 15 meals which is actually kind of good as well as that these meals have a much higher nutritional value they have a 0.90 this is a nice big nutritional bonus it's not actually as big as you think we'll get back to that in a bit but it is quite decent now this here is fine meals fine meals are a huge step up but they require something extra these meals here can be made out of both plants and animals this requires a 50 50 mix of plants and animals to create it meaning 50 meat 50 veg however if you go down here and actually have a look i have a little mod here installed to make it a little bit easier to see all the things you can see cook fine meal nutritional value required 0.25 0.25 of ingredients and the ingredients if you go in and actually list them out you can see for animal products it actually includes a few that might be surprised to you for example insect jelly is an animal product milk is an animal product eggs all this stuff in fact the weird thing is you can take milk and you can cook it up as a simple meal and it will turn milk into a simple meal i have no idea how that happens it's just basically a giant glass of milk whatever but the bonus of these simple meals is they give the or sorry the fine meals is they give a plus five moodlet bonus simple meals do not so by paying at the extra cost of meat and veg you give yourself a nice big mood bonuses next up we'll just cover package survival meals these ones are not quite as efficient as you can see here we've only got 12 as opposed to the 15 is before they still give the exact same nutrition and all that it's just it takes more materials to make them because they never go off they don't go off you can just leave them in dry storage you don't need to freeze them they're excellent for long-term storage they're amazing and they can also be sold you can sell them off at most traders making them a very good commodity to invest a lot if you've got a spare cook just have them cook up lots of meals it's actually worth money next up we'll cover pemmican we'll come back to this in a minute pemmican is a bit unique it has the requirements of fine meals and that requires a 50 50 mix of both plant and animal matter but at the same time it doesn't create quite as much of a bonus in terms of food production this is 75 a piece now i'm going to get back to food consumption and how this would be consumed it actually works out quite good but it doesn't give a mood bonus it actually works out about the same in terms of how many meals you get out of it works out about the same as simple meals and fine meals next up are lavish meals lavish meals take twice as much resources to make as both simple and fine meals think of this as the pinnacle be-all end-all and they're very rarely ever used the reason being it takes twice as much nutrition and it's you know a 50 mix of animal and plant matter they're very rarely used you only use them as a booster we'll cover that later on and then we get to well nutrient paste dispensers these things are amazing you build one of these machines you put these hoppers on the side of it the hoppers can t you can put in anything you want animal meat plant matter does not make a difference then what happens is a pond will come up and they will just basically magic out a bunch of resources and turn it into a meal what makes this device so exceptional is it only took six resources to produce that meal and that meal has a well you can't see it right now you know what we'll unselect them we're selecting for the moment so they drop the meal you'll notice here that the nutritional value on this is 0.9 that is the exact same nutritional value as these items over here but these two items the basic ones that you're normally going to use they take 10 nutrition to make or 10 pieces of meat meter veg to make this thing only takes six making this the be-all end-all of most efficient food creation it also no chance of food poisoning you cannot get food poisoning from using one of these meaning you don't even need a good cook or a clean area it will just work however the downside is well as follows one you can only create meals when the pond goes up oh okay we'll cover the quick trick around that if you want to get around that what you can do is well get them to collect a meal and then select them they will drop the meal on the ground and then once they're dropped to me on the ground make sure it's x out so they can't pick it back up again and then just repeat as normal you'll see there we go five six seven eight nine ten and then if you get the next one they'll put it down on the ground but if you unselect them they'll actually go and try and pick that one up so make sure to block that out again and then we can immediately just keep plowing through all of those resources until you have turned them all into meals and would you look at that we have managed to turn the exact same amount of resources that went into creating these 15 meals have created us 25 meals over here it is an absolutely amazing system it's very useful and this ability to just uh chunk them out of there is great one massive downside is well there's a big morale penalty for eating them unfortunately we're going to have berkey here have a quick nibble down on one of these and you'll see the eight widow table which is annoying but the awful meal a minus four for eating these minus four that lasts for a full 24 hours for example if you eat one of these it gives a plus five mood bonus meaning you're nine points away from where you could be if you just made some fine meals so this is very useful will stretch your food supplies an awful lot in strenuous situations but you're going to need to really compensate on the morale front to make up for this loss next up we're going to cover when they actually go for food and they will go for food once their food bar hits 30 at which point they should turn around dueling and go grab some food now this is where the importance of uh this point five nutrition comes in really handy when they go to grab food what they'll do is they'll only eat as much food as they need so you'll see there they've picked up a bunch of food let's have a check exactly how much well you can see how much they've taken off the ground there this used to be 75 now it's 60 14 nutrition in hand they're going to chug that all down that 14 nutritional account to a 70 gain in the mood bar that means they've just taken exactly what they need however if they try and eat one of these meals over here which they will do when it goes then when they go to 30 health they will eat 0.9 nutrition so this point 9 nutrition is sort of well it's a little bit misleading they will eat that 0.9 nutrition and they'll consume the whole meal but it won't fill up their nutritional bar anymore once they've consumed it it'll only go up to a hundred this makes pemmican actually quite a decent and efficient food there's a couple of interesting things to note about the priorities when it comes to what foods they'll eat and when for example you can see here that their food is down to 12 percent they're absolutely starving right now they've gone below the 30 mark at that point they'll start considering foods that they would not normally think about for example rice potatoes raw meat and berries however there's a bit of an interesting quirk here at 12 they'll eat all of these and berries are great because berries do not give them a mood debuff berries can be eaten raw you still have a two percent chance of getting food poisoning because all raw food gives you that however they will go for that first but if we get rid of that they'll then pick one of the others at random they don't really seem to have too much of a preference after that so it does mean even if they get desperate they'll definitely still eat the berries they'll just wait until they're at a much lower percentage of their health better or their food bar and unfortunately that doesn't mean they get too ravenously hungry territory and they're minus 12. so if you're living exclusively on berries you should probably make sure they eat man you manually tell them to eat otherwise they'll wait until they're at a very low point and low in mood as well as it should be noted if you were to take say those uh say 10 berries and cook them up you'd get a simple meal whereas it's going to take them to just to restore 70 of their food bar 14 berries so you're actually better off cooking berries as it is assuming you've got a half decent cook next up we'll come up to all of these meals here for example if we say unselect all of these and we'll move them back over here now when we deselect them they'll go to their preferred meal type which in this instance immediately happens to be the lavish meals so if you've made lavish meals maybe put those on unselectable for a while then the next meal they'll go for is the fine meals and then right after that i think you've guessed it yeah they go for the simple meals i may have run this test before and then they'll go straight for the pemmican and then finally they'll go for the survival meals this is just the normal order they go for things in so if you do cook up any lavish meals immediately make sure no one is allowed to eat them now you can just simply go in here under a sign and you can edit their food restrictions you can change it to whatever you want you can put them on different meal plans and then you can really fine tune it as much as you would really like to here um now let's cover some of the more exotic nail types they can possibly have for a pawn to consider eating raw meat of any sort well raw whole meat it needs to get to malnutrition moderate once the malnutrition mother they're willing to just literally put a panther on the table and start chowing down however they will prioritize animals over anything else though if you leave them no options they will go for the long pig variant and that covers pretty much most of food food actually behaves more like a drug than you would think well in this game anyway for example if we say consume these berries this will do nothing for our actual mood it will just fill up our mood bar and we won't get any buffs or debuffs for using it however if we then go and say consume this raw meat the raw meat will give us a rather nasty debuff we will get eight roll food which is a minus seven and it doesn't expire for an entire day which also pretty bad consuming rice though however will not stack it we've still just got the eight raw food debuff it won't go down again however if we then consume an animal well yep there we go we've just stacked an eight corpse on top of it for a minus 12 for 24 hours and then if we consume say someone else we will get a minus 24 raw cannibalism but this works the opposite way as well for example if we consume this lavish meal it will give us a bonus of plus 12 and that plus 12 there is great for the lavish meal and then if we consume a fine meal on top of that it actually gives us an additional bonus five so we've just ate two meals and you wouldn't think that normally but yes you can consume both those meals and stack both of the mood buffs however packet survival meals are effectively simple me or are not the same they're effectively a fine meal if you eat a a fine meal or food a survival meal you'll get plus five move bonus stacking them on top of each other does nothing unfortunately yeah whatever you live when you learn the eight without table debuff gives you a minus three to your pawns and no one likes it it's caused money a mental break over the years now how do you make get someone to eat at a table well as long as they're close enough to the table when they get hungry they will go straight to the table and eat however it's not quite that accurate they have to go straight to the dining chair and how close is close well 33 tiles so this distance from there to this bone here we have a couple of clones so for example this pawn here is 34 tiles away from the nearest seat and when we unselect them they immediately go and chow down on a meal because they are hungry this pawn here is exactly as hungry but is one tile closer and when they get unselected they go straight for this chair now remember it's to the chair if i destroy this chair they won't go towards this table because the next nearest chair is 34 tiles away as well as that this seems to be a circle i haven't done a huge amount of testing on this because i just needed to know the base number but it seems to be circular as in it's not square you need to like curve it in at the edges just make sure to plan at your base so that every pawn is usually within 33 tiles of a chair to eat as well as that make sure your dining rooms are actually pretty spiffy because it does add an awful lot to the to your mood you do have the option of using a few mods to make things easier this is the table diner it allows you to extend the radius of your tables i haven't actually played with this in any of my games just yet but it does come pretty reasonably recommended and it's updated to 1.2 another thing that also gets brought up an awful lot when it comes to food is insect meat you can use insect meat to make lavish meals now insect meat if you put it into a meal will give you a negative however the lavish meal still counts so it gives you this weird thing where you have eight cooked insect meat which gives you a minus three for a whole day but at the same time you get a plus 12 from the lavish meal so it actually works out as a plus nine moodlet bonus at the same time you still have to use twice as much vegetables so it kind of comes across about the same cost as a fine meal but you just only paid vegetables for it so it's technically a way to gain a little bit of mood if you really want to now let's have a quick look at insect jelly insect jelly is a bit unique as well your pawns when they eat it they don't just get their food back they also get their recreation back it gives chemical recreation so the moment they're finished this three two one boom they've got uh their recreation is now massively maxed out and at the same time it's also filled up their footwear it's just excellent over here we have two meals one is a fine meal that's made with insect jelly and berries and one is a simple meal now if we get the two of them to eat those meals you should think that they would get a bonus from eating the insect jelly or would crank up their recreation however no once they're cooked insect jelly does nothing anymore i don't know why don't ask me why but it feels like it should but it doesn't however all of that aside there should be no reason ever to cook insect jelly because it's much better to keep it raw at the same time it's actually better to sell it than eat it it's worth an absolute fortune and insecurity should in all cases just be sold the only reuse i have found for insect jelly is to feed to the stellar and that's only if you don't have access to the other meals you could possibly feed them that's literally honestly that's an edge case scenario where we just didn't have the technology or the ability to create the meals necessary most instances you're going to want to sell that insect jelly insect jelly is also one of the few things that's perfect for caravanning it can't go off and it gives a recreational bonus for the chemical consumption meaning you can keep everyone's recreation high on the move the only other uh thing that's close to that is chocolate and chocolate is yeah it's just needlessly difficult to make it's extremely time consuming to make the planting the trees alone never mind they can get killed by toxic fallout and all that no just not worth it just to hammer home some of the uh the points here about this one simple meals are the simplest thing to make they require almost they can be made from 10 of any ingredients it doesn't really matter what it is so that makes them really powerful and pemmican is actually incredibly useful if these uh if this pawn say only eats the actual minimum amount to eat every every time which is 70 then what you've got here is 17 meals actually 17 in a fraction but who's who cares so you're actually getting more meals out of it than if you make simple meals however it does fall quite far far behind fine meals though it does come out really miles ahead in terms of uh food storage this thing lasts for about a year and a half or so almost a year 1.2 years it lasts for a year or so it really does have exceptional long-term storage and it's quite useful though it is a little bit slower to make to stress again how important this is the nutrient paste dispenser produces enough nutrition that you can literally put milk in here then use that milk to make the meals this thing can actually make simple meal or nutrient paste meals out of milk i have no idea how then those nutrient basements you can feed to cows who will produce more milk than you actually took to feed them so you can create nutrition out of nothing with this it's actually quite powerful however the moment you have a power outage you're going to regret it well not really you put a bunch of meals in storage or have a backup supplies to their survival meals it's actually quite a powerful tool my advice would be feed most of your pawns on fine meals you'll be doing that the majority of the time keep a whole huge stockpile of survival meals in reserve for when you need them at the same point if you really need to stretch your reserves use the nutrient paste dispenser and pemmical pemmican well it's a decent choice if you don't start on tribal you'll have to research it which means you're kind of going back here to get it uh packet survival mills actually have to be researched as well so you're going to need those and the nutrient paste dispenser so realistically you're sort of stuck with normal meals and fine meals early on and then you have to choose where you want to take into later anyway that's pretty much all the information you really need to know about food i hope you enjoyed and good luck [Music] [Music] you [Music]
