hey guys welcome back hope everybody's doing well hey keggie turn down your radio man all right there we go please turn your radio down before you call it hope you guys are doing well con con we will be starting right at noon we like to fire up a couple minutes early just to make sure that there's no gremlins in the system uh that sort of thing but we'll be getting going it takes us a minute to find our voice especially after a few weeks off like this had to remember what buttons to push yeah this this whole week feels like a week of mondays for me seriously doing this again fortunately i did remember what room in my house i am uh doing this from so that was fortunate there it is noon it's new all right it is official yes sir doing it awesome here it's not noon pretty much anywhere else it's noon here that's the important part hey guys how's it going i am aaron if we have not met before i'm the sketchup guy uh i'm gonna be modeling for you today with me as always is my buddy jody gates i'll model for you as well but you can't see it that's right his is probably better than mine but uh i just i got the gear at my house so that's what we got to do um i hope you guys are doing well welcome back welcome to sketchup live 2021 uh we're starting this the whole thing off this first wednesday of the year we're gonna do this do some modeling and we're gonna we're gonna keep it rolling we're pretty excited if you guys haven't been over to our forums forums.sketchup.com there is a calendar up there now that's going to show when we're doing live events what they're going to be uh specifically our scheduled live events but if anything else comes up that that you should know about that's the place to check out so go to forums.sketchup.com if you haven't already been there and uh look at that live calendar if you want to be up to date right here oh yeah i bet we can get a link this link is to today's event i'll get the one for the calendar in a sec all right uh so yeah we're gonna do it we're gonna hop in we are gonna model the leaning tower pisa um i'm just looking at a couple of comments we have i'm surprised we don't we don't have the hello from everywhere in the world like i'm used to i'm kind of surprised you guys aren't uh hitting me up from where where all you're at you're not the only one from coming back from a break everybody's gone that's true they gotta find their feet i'm sorry take it easy let's just ease into this it's cool i apologize you're right don't rush don't rush things i did notice that too that's why i made my comment about it being noon here here's someone which i'm in with some midnight there and there we go arizona seattle thanks guys thanks for catching me there it is awesome uh yeah i i really hope you guys had an awesome uh holiday new year's whatever you celebrated i hope you enjoyed celebrating i hope it went well and uh i i really hope that 2021 is an amazing year for each and every one of you and for us too so i'm praying so i'm i'm looking at your video here and you're like a talking head in front of like smack in the center of a big old sketchup screen with a big with a call out of who you are at the bottom it kind of looks like like you're reporting the news or you could do the weather or something like that yeah we're we're we're go i told you we're we're leveling up we're next leveling the live stream this is no more messing around we've been doing this for like two years two years two and a half years uh we've been doing it for longer than i thought uh since middle of 2019 i think so yeah you're doing a lot of it this should totally be a best of 2020 episode where you highlight it's a highlight reel well it's a little late for that suggestion yeah sorry well i had the idea two weeks ago that doesn't help me a lot oh hey i asked for shout outs and we're getting on vancouver island poland england greece uh brazil tennessee uh keggie's calling back from the uk ireland uh swinton pakistan germany um pizza there's only like scrolling through that i see like two u.s cities and then it's all international okay seattle three yeah i just think uh when you call in internationally it's that much more work so you're proud of it and you shout it out i think something like that that could be it or it could be that everybody in the us is at work like they're actively working and everybody else that's true in europe is evening more comments when you're watching from home yeah okay so like i was saying we are going to hop in here and we are going to do the leaning tower of pisa uh it's going to be done once again with little to no extensions because i still haven't installed any extensions on 2021. um i'm actually kind of enjoying this nice clean interface like i get in here and i'm just i just i almost don't want to add any more icons so i will probably get the few that i use a lot to rely on shortcuts but man i i just like this clean interface i know some of you guys windows users especially will just start putting the rows of buttons in there and i've seen some people with multiple screens where they have like oh this is my button monitor over here i model on this screen uh which is cool obviously i'm on mac i can't do that so uh but i'm i'm liking it clean i remember years back like this this some fun screenshot someone did they basically installed every extension back at the time they were not nearly as many and they just kept wrapping and sticking to the edges of the screen going around all four sides as you used to be able to do or maybe you can still do and you ended up with this little like one inch square in the middle and then it's just surrounded by toolbars sounds about right yeah um i like keep all my stuff zipped up like you've got yeah but i'd like to hear from you guys i mean do you guys do you guys get a lot of ui do you like to have it nice and clean like this because like i said i've i don't have a lot of heavy ui you guys have seen i'll turn a toolbar on when i need it but then turn it off if i don't need it and that's kind of how i operate to get as much screen space to model on as possible but what do you guys prefer i'd love to love to hear your thoughts do you fill it up do you fill your screen up with buttons or do you rely on keyboard shortcuts and keep it clean uh let's hear your preferences i usually just add the standard views up along the top bar and the uh like the effects you know whether it's got textures etc i add those two things up to the top because i always forget shortcuts for them anyway i wonder how many people still use that left hand getting started little floating nav oh the instructor no no the what used to be the the standard toolbar oh the big toolbar large tool set yeah a large tool set yeah i i so as i've been doing these square one videos you might you guys might have seen them on youtube uh where's just the basics how to use tools that kind of thing i've been using that large tool set in most of them because that's the great place that's where you get started from that's where you you begin um and it is cool i mean it's got a good good stuff on here but almost everything here also has a shortcut key so i think it's a good tool set to start off with but i think as soon as you use it more you end up using shortcut keys instead but uh yeah i do i do like that i mean i guess i'm getting back to basics i don't know look at you way to go that's that's it the old 2020 reboot we're calling that's right the new new me for 2021 new me all right so uh here's what i'm going to do i'm going to come in here and uh i got a couple images that i want to use i posted all of these on the forum too jody put a link up already and there's uh a handful of there's not good plans which this is nothing new as we do these historical structures there's not always good plans or good measurements or anything like that so i'm going to piece together data from three or four different images so i'm going to start by importing one i'm going to go file import and i'm going to grab this one right here i believe uh it's kind of funny tower of pisa abbreviates into top so i got top a b c d and e here okay it's really not that funny but it's something funny is probably not the right word i like that last picture that andy put up there that's got like so you could basically if you wanted to you could only do you know the version done in 1200 so just the first four levels back when it was all double we'll see how we'll see how time goes i have i have a cop out here i'm going to go well historically that's where they stopped so i'm going to stop we'll see how that goes um so i did want to bring this one in because it does have some dimensions on it that's good um all right so it looks like the the tower itself is 16.9 meters all the way around um that's good because that's what i was thinking here so somebody on the forum asked um i think it was dan asked are you going to model it straight up or are you going to model it tilt it over and i started thinking about that i'm like well what what what makes sense here um built straight up it was built straight up it actually started leaning during a portion of the construction later on um and i guess they've gone in and stabilized it too at this point because it used to lean over like a centimeter a year or something like that it used to go and they were it was gonna eventually fall over so they kind of so looking at this looking at andy's picture here so it took him over 160 years to like it it took almost 200 years to build this thing 199 years is what i read what the how the heck is that oh i i get i get bored with something if it takes me you know two weeks i finished my basement and that was like six months so i get it i didn't have to carve any stone for that either okay yes it's also further evidence that people used to live longer that's probably true um yeah isn't that weird to think that they kicked off a project that their grandchildren would be finishing for him yeah um all right 16.99 i counted and you guys can correct me if i'm wrong but i believe there are 30 columns going around most of the tower so what my thought was is to to do a 30-sided circle and break one of those wedges out and model that wedge as a component repeat it all the way around and then make each floor component that i can then repeat up because when you look at it one two three four five six levels of the the tower are exactly the same they turn because the spiral stairs on the inside the door that accesses the the balcony type location changes as it goes around but the bulk of the geometry is the same all the time so i'm thinking that's what we'll do is we'll start with a circle 30-sided circle that is 16.9 and then uh we'll break that in down into components which we'll then put on there so let's start that let's do that we're going to grab a circle i'm going to make it 30 sides and i could i mean just so you guys don't like if i wanted to put a lot of detail into the arches of each side i could make that a multiplier of 30. so i could say 90 sides and make my slice out of three sides or something like that i'm gonna keep it fairly simple because uh one i want it to be a manageable model and two i want to get it done in a reasonable amount of time so i'm going to make this what would be 8.45 meters all right based on pictures i've seen sumela standing next to that looks like it could be about right but that is not 24 sides i didn't i said i was going to do that and then forgot let's try that again all right so i'm going to circle 30 enter i think i didn't hit enter maybe pull that out did you ever open sketchup while you were on your break i did i did a little for fun modeling one point just in an afternoon i had to myself but yeah there's there's probably a little bit of rust we'll blame it on that thank you jody whoops 8.45 meters there we go that's the stuff i was looking for all right so now i know that this is not uh 12 anymore because 12 is evenly divisible by these quadrants and i can see i have a line up here and a point down here so i do have an odd number of sides and a half i'm assuming that's 15. now i'm going to come in here and break out one of these and this is really the one of the only pieces i'm concerned about let's get another image in here i'm going to pull in an image and get it up here as a watermark that i can refer back to regularly so i'm going to go to styles uh edit my style go to my watermarks add um i think i want this one right here yeah that'll work i'm gonna put this in the background i'm gonna put it in the lower right corner so i can kind of reference that that'll work uh i can just look over to this and then i have that d that there all the time to look at it's not to pull dimensions off of or anything like that but i can reference this so there's a couple pieces i'm going to be looking at i'm going to keep this i'm just going to call this my wedge component i'm going to use a copy of this for the base but i'm also going to use that to make these pieces up here all right speaking of which let's take a look at how all right so here's the part i'm i'm thinking right now uh i broke this down for these one two three four five six the main six layers in there i broke it into 30 pieces because that's how these pieces lay out uh these sections down below don't have that same geometry as the top sections do so i think what i'm going to do is i'm going to start by building one of these middle sections so i'm going to build one of these six pieces first and then come back and put the base underneath it and the top on top because that's just how my brain's going i'm going after the bulk i'm going after the biggest piece first so if i look here it looks like if i was to draw a circle right here i would have let's see i'm going to draw a line that is 7.66 meters and i'll draw another line i'm trying to think visually for you guys this is 2.61 meters all right so that is this is internal this is my wall and then everything outside of that is this balcony space so if i was to grab this from the middle and put it right here that's how this piece would break down so this is saying that here's my balcony this is the internal cavity because the empty you can see the inside of the tower is apparently open like that and this is where the walls are which i believe contain the stairs as well cool so i'm going to take this wedge right here so if i look at my components i have this wedge saved as a component right now i don't want to mess with that i want to hold on to that original wedge component in case i need it i don't know why i would need it but just to maintain it so i'm going to grab the one that i have in the model right now and i'm going to make it unique oh i guess i can't it's the only one in the model so i'm going to it's already unique yeah it's the only one so i'm going to copy this and make a copy set it over here and now i will make this unique and i have so many so many boards in my shop and so many uh gadgets and and worldly giggs just saved around my house because i might need it later just like this cool it makes so much sense that's my garage right here or you might be a digital hoarder aaron yeah but it takes up a lot of space in the hard drive rather than my cut off pieces of wood oh there's that all right so i'm going to call this my middle level wedge i'm going to come into it double click to enter it i'm going to draw a line this is my my line of of markation but i don't want to draw it straight up i want to of course go parallel to this line so i'm going to come over like that draw a line there come over here like this again draw parallel all right so now with that i can get rid of cursor's being weird all right so i'm going to take this right now i'm going to rotate it option 29 x should give me a full circle awesome all right now oh something else i can do here now i'm going to leave it i'm going to leave the middle where it is now so i can get back to the center if i have to i'm also going to make a change to my style this is the default style that i'm working with right now but for a couple reasons i like to come in here and edit it go to my lines and turn off profiles i like personally like the look of just all the flat lines the same same width um i also don't lean on it too heavily anymore to find where's the edge of something plus it does sketchup is quicker if it's not calculating what's a profile edge so i'm intentionally do that doing that just to kind of make my model more performant it's your call if you want if you don't want to do that that's fine but i like to do that because it just keeps it cleaner and a little bit quicker all right next thing i'm going to do is i've got to come in and i got to put some dimensions in here so i have some dimensions for my horizontal measurement i'm going to go ahead and import another image i'm going to grab i believe it's this one yeah it is okay so here's what we got here uh i have dimensions to the high side so i'm just gonna model to that i'm going to model uh this as being a layer basically a level so what i have to do or let's see let's you know let's do this this will be fun that's usually what i say before i get myself in trouble uh i'm gonna come in here and uh let's see i'm gonna draw a line i can clearly see draw a line from here up to here i'm gonna grab those and make a group of them i'm going to come in here and i'm going to scale this i should also while i'm thinking about it go in and change my units everything i'm doing is in meters so it doesn't really make much sense to keep inches showing maybe we should have uh those playing along at home to go make a 2d component of them leaning against it holding it up like a proper tourist photo that it deserves i i haven't been to the lean tower pizza but i'm assuming that if you come in as a tourist you're required to stand behind a certain line and do a picture of you like this so maybe we'll make that happen at the end i'll i'll get over here on my green screen we'll get that shot do it in person some great clips some guy was uh you know her social media ran along and high-fived everybody that was like on the inside edge of everybody that's doing that everybody looked like they're they're holding it up he ran along just high-fiving each of them as you should that's awesome yeah that's the way it should be i wonder if we have anybody watching that is anywhere close to where the actual tower is usually we have somebody that's like oh yeah it's just outside my back window yeah that does happen to us a lot doesn't it so i was wondering how well again this is an image so i just did an array there and i can see that those are not the same but uh oh is that what it was because i pulled oh i did you're right i did not pull that line from zero would you pull it from the top of that i pulled it from the top of whatever this step here is ah rookie move man was this your first time buddy okay let's try that again all the way down to zero that might be why the step was i don't know we'll see oops all right now 55.863 there we go all right so if i take that line i move it to right here 5x so i don't know again i don't know if this is the drawing or if the layers the levels are actually different size so i'm not sure what to do with that that data i've just gained um or these is this the measurement right here so if i go but then it's only a difference of six six units whatever units i'm assuming this says it's meters down at the bottom yeah so something's not right because i'm measuring i'm scaling that right now oh yeah yeah i see i see so that's that's the distance between each floor that's curious yeah but the la it's not it's not showing up correct cause if i look at that it says i got that at 5.9 yeah the levels do have different dimensions well we'll make it work oh is that a horizontal dimension i think that's a horizontal dimension yeah oh wait no you think i don't know why it would be i mean it's effectively it's almost the same there's only a difference of four or six i don't know maybe they're just calling attention to the fact that stuff ain't right here all right well to that note i guess really what i need to know is and i'm not i'm not going to be some kind of chump and screw this up i'm going to actually use a calculator [Music] let's see if i push the buttons right so if i was to look at one seven point eight eight two minus one two point zero two eight that's telling me a single level level is 5.85 meters that's really what i need to worry about right now so i'm just going to do that i'm going to take that 5.85 i'm going to take one of these rings i'm just going to show this up 5.85 i'm also going to grab all this and reverse faces all right so that's effectively the inside ring right now i've created this ring right here if i look at this so just to get a ballpark i'm just going to scale along here with a line and okay so that's about i'm going to say 1.2 is is that floor height come in here grab this i'm going to copy it up and push it down 1.2 all right so that gets me this and now got lots lots of stuff happening this does come out a little bit further right here let's go ahead and we'll just we'll get that detail in right now um the way i'm going to do this i want to make sure so working on a wedge like this it's real easy to uh up at the corners because the corners don't meet at 90 degrees they meet at a weird angle so if i was to do something like push pull this face out i'm gonna immediately create this separation so what i want to try to do is wherever i can continue like this line and this line out and then kind of use this piece instead that's going to give me that full volume and i can take like this line push it down i don't know the exact profile but it's something like that i can see that profile rate oops right here how it kind of steps down and out kind of a wedge shape so i'm going to make something like that and i pull it the full way down i didn't mean to do that nice that will take i feel like every time you say wedge i just want to make some sort of comment about biggs and go ahead i'm okay with that i don't know if i've got a good comment yet so i don't want to waste it that's that's a good point you might only get one yeah um so if you want to start saying things that sort of lend themselves to womp rats or i mean if you just casually mention anything like that cool that's that sounds fair all right i took that first one a little too far but this is really more what i was looking for all right cool that kind of little wedge shape there the other thing i'm going to do right now is i'm going to come in and use my eraser to well actually there's a couple things i want to do one thing i should save command s people come on geez i didn't miss it nobody said it again everybody's out of practice i guess so um the other thing i want to do so after i save the other thing i want to do is i'm going to come in here and i'm going to go to component edit hide similar components i'll probably flip that on on and off a couple times as i go through here but what this is gonna let me do is see the edge faces like this so i can actually see it the other thing i can do is i don't actually need this piece or this piece and if i have the top face here i don't actually need this piece this is all i actually need of that wedge so if i come out right now see that still shows up as close it's open at the bottom but that'll be sitting on top of the the next piece the other thing i could do is come in here and use my eraser and shift erase these lines that make up the edges what that's going to do and i want to use shift if i erase them of course i'll get rid of the line and lose my face because that line or that edge defines the face um the reason i'm using shift is shift will hide it i don't want to use uh option or control because that'll actually smooth it and give me some weird shading stuff happening i just want to use shift to erase now if i exit out it's going to look like one full piece so one of the things i will lose by by doing this in sections the way i am rather than doing it all together is i can't soften out these edges right here it's something you could do model as a component initially and then come back afterwards and uh uh you know join all those components together and then smooth it out if that's important to you right now for me it's more important to not model the same column whatever 30 times six is many many times okay this is what we got i'm gonna save uh next thing is on one of these wedges to come in and get a column so i want a column to come down right from the middle i want to look at what the column looks like so i guess i'm going to load another reference image and i'm just throwing these over the side you guys probably already picked up on this i'm just tossing these over here to use to view i'm not really tracing off of them or anything like that it's just this one this model kind of works that way so i i do have my constant reference here where i can count layers that kind of thing make sure it's looking like it's supposed to by looking over here but generally speaking if i load in other images i'll either load them in at scale you know scale them up to the right spot and use them to trace off them or i'll just dump them off to the side so i can go look at them rather than alt tabbing out or something like that if i have multiple monitors if you're a real person you just have those open in a tab on a different browser on a different monitor exactly yeah so if we're working with re like real worldness the monitor that i have right over here would just have that image on there but this is in the real world this is sketchup live which is a little bit better than the real world that's right slightly better it smells great at least i'll give it that i guess that's something i think it's a tagline waiting to happen welcome to sketchup live we smell great we smell two percent better all right so here's what we got um sometimes things just happen and they get done and you're like huh all right so i got kind of a uh an arch and a column coming down here it looks like so this is that little little wedge i put in so this piece that comes down i'm assuming is where this arch goes so i have a decision to make right now what to do with the column because i could take one of these wedges and i could split it at the arc and the arc and make that a section or i could split it the middle of the column and split it the middle of the column and make the arches section as i look at it i think it's going to be easier to model this column as one piece and split the arches rather than trying to split the column in half and model half and half so i'm going to lean towards modeling like this where i will i'll model uh from half of an arch to half of an arch and then put the column all the way down inside that model inside that wedge do you remember wedge's last name antilles that is a solid last name i really remember biggs is biggs his last name i don't know anything about bigs we don't really talk about bigs we don't i guess we're just disappointed in bigs i don't know all right i'm gonna get an approximate value for a width here let's see this is about we'll say it's 0.6 meters wide for that wedge how's that that's a solid last name wet biggs dark lighter i heard a lot of the last names were potentially luke skywalker's last name i wonder how we would feel if he was luke and tilly's or luke dark lighter or luke dark [Music] fighter we'll never know nope i'm gonna guess this only ever came up in the books because i can't think of any time i've ever heard the word dark lighter well it's not that common a name outside of tatooine so okay that makes sense i've never been to tatooine i don't even know anybody from tatooine um dome design is asking can you do a full arc and full column on the side of the component you could actually you could do just both i could one piece could be the column dropping down and the arc coming off this way the reason i don't want to do that we just don't want to do two halves is because if i if i have it wrap around i have to actually put that break in and i'd rather just if i'm going to put the break in i'll just i guess it's personal preference you could do it either way actually all right so this is going to come down a little bit so i'm going to do a couple like i said a couple prelim i'm having some weird cursor issues um where my cursor is not changing over so this sorry about this it's all right so i'm gonna say that's about 1.5 um let's see the uh what's this part called what's the top of a uh column a fancy column like this point eight i'm gonna i'm gonna ask i'm gonna phone a friend just a minute okay so this comes down 1.5 hmm oh look at that and pan back to this the same time yeah i guess that could be right plin it could be a plin it's better than anything else i got so i'm gonna go yeah i'm relatively new to a heavy base supporting a statue or base see like the whole thing oh okay so according to google and the internet it is the lower square slab at the base of a column so we just ask the opposite of that what is the top of the column cornice going to go 0.8 wait did i do that right 0.4 half of that 0.8 millimeter would be 0.4 and if i go out this way 0.4 should be just past the edge yeah that's what i want capital capital forms the top most member of a column the capital yes it sounds regal all right something like that would be a quarter of it take that flip that around like that okay so that's where the reason that's important is because that's where my arc takes off from i think now someone's looking not quite to scale here crown see that i think that was a term that i had in my head uh oh it goes up from that okey dokey there's so many so many moving parts in there there are there really are um i mean they're not moving but you know figuratively well they shouldn't actually be moving that would that would probably be an issue well i mean that's part of the problem with the the tower right that is also very true yeah all right so here's what i got so this is where the arch starts to go up this is where the ceiling comes across so i'm assuming that's where the arch terminates so what i need to do now is i actually need to get a quarter circle right here an arc you guys ever get this you go in to do your arc and you get that it's not showing what the arc looks like so it's not showing you where tangent is going to be or something like that it means it's having a hard time pulling uh what line i'm pulling the arc off of so it can't show me what's tangent to that first line because i have one two three four five different lines coming into this point so as i come over here it can't tell where that is so here's what i usually do to force that i know that this right here i want to go whatever this distance is down so what i'm going to do is go ahead and rotate that let me go make sure i stay in playing with this right here grab it take a copy rotate it down by rotating it down that's actually going to break this line right here see that now i can draw an arc from here to here and once it's on there then i can drop back to tangent i really like that rotate command that's just good stuff all right and at that point i can erase erase erase oh it's behind my head yeah i gotta you know what i have you got to make a new little tiny errand i have my work name tag and i'm wondering if i could just kind of hang it over that's good enough it'll work for right now all right that's about where i'm at oh let's see yeah i'll hang my name tag on my monitor to remind me to not put my face in the way sorry guys sorry about my face okay so what we've just created is uh we actually probably created that too high but that's okay i can bring it down easy enough um so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna come in here and do some some break because it looks like there's one two three levels so there's the outer then an inner then another inner level there so i want to create this in 2d on the face before i start push pulling anything to create that um so the first thing i'm going to do sorry got a little crazy there apologize um so i'm going to take this scoot it over to not all the way over maybe that far over now i'm gonna have to redraw that arc i thought i thought i could make that work but i guess i can't i just i garbled some geometry there sorry i hope that didn't make anybody motion sick or anything like that but all right we're back to it i'm going to the bathroom i've got to go i've gotta i've got to evacuate but that didn't sound right no that sounded sounded not good i was trying to not say throw up but whatever look we are where we are it's happened now it's we really can't get out of it we're here that's that's what we got to do all right so i'm actually going to pull that arc off the inside here so i'm going to do that whole thing i just did again whole thing it was a few steps it was a couple steps it's all i take this q to rotate it i'm going to shift to stay on axis option rotate down a i don't like how my here to here continue out here boom okay that is actually the arc i want because now what i can do is i can take this do my most severe offsets going to be all the way in like that and then i got another one that's maybe half that it's all right because this is the outsideist outsideist part that's going to give me this one then this is this one and this this one yup looks good with that before i push pull i'm going to grab this line this actually before i do this i'm going to grab all these lines i'm going to right click and i'm going to tell it to weld edges so what that should do is give me one two three lines rather than six so that's going to be good for the purpose of copying which i'm about to do but also to keep uh my lines cleaner when i push pull all right so i'll grab those i will rotate now and say it came just over so i'm going to grab it from here option spin those lines over to the other side boom like that all right this is looking good now you might uh take a moment to explain that thing in your left hand because now it's it's been asked a couple of times okey dokey this right here i'm working on my showmanship this is a 3d mouse this is specifically is the 3d space mouse enterprise from 3d connection it is not a requirement by any means to have one of these when you run sketchup you can run all day long without ever having a 3d mouse but it is a nice option to have especially if you are uh presenting a lot so in sketchup we get used to doing this people who aren't aware or haven't seen sketchup that can come off as kind of jerky not like you're a jerky but like jumping aroundy so having this nice smooth movement is really a nice option to have if you're doing a lot of presenting the other thing is if you are using sketchup a lot and you're looking at a way to get more effective and and design faster because now this leaves this mouse totally free and available to go pick out my next command or do some selections as i'm rotating i can do all that while i'm while i'm rotating because all the animation all the orbiting happens over here rather than over here the other nice thing about the higher levels the enterprise and the space mouse pro is they have the buttons on here so what you lose by having your left hand over on the space mouse is you don't have it on the keyboard anymore with the shortcut keys over here you can actually program yourself to rather than jump over here for shortcuts just tap them over here which is really nice also all right with that let's uh let's wrap up these arcs so i'm gonna take them let's take a look at oh that looks pretty nice i'm gonna keep hopping over here definitely not what i had oh because this bottom arc should be up to the ceiling okay we can fix that it's not big enough not deep enough yeah see this arc right here should be right here i'm going to turn on hidden real quick and get rid of some hidden geometry i'm going to erase this and this and i've got a couple lines here i don't need because i'm going to stretch these real quick i want this line right here to go up to this line right here so i'm going to do that oh am i maybe i'm regretting that weld i did earlier let's see if i move this vertically that's going to make a big mess yeah i was wondering about that well when you first did it but i just wanted to show off the integrated weld i think it's cool i'm trying to use it more but not a big deal i can i can break i can break you as easily as i made you all right so i'm gonna just put a line across there yeah i'm a parent grab those okay move it it sounds very mature vertically up to here all right all right now let's uh i'm going to push pull i need to get rid of some lines in here because it won't let me push pull through these but i still have this these points really all i need is these points where i could recreate the crown or i can't remember the other word we decided for that and i'm going to push pull this through to here i'm going to option push pull both these through and then i have a little bit of cleanup to do here all right so one piece of cleanup this is going to go to here and i'm going to erase that that and that now at the bottom i'm going to have something similar i want to drop a line straight down from here verify my yep that's the right spot erase that erase that actually i don't care about that that's open all right erase it all just get rid of it all right looks good so that's what i'm looking for perfect while i'm here i'll go ahead and push this one back i do have to actually you know let me back up a little bit let me back back back back back all right i'm going to do this from here uh it's going to be easier to edit these all together i think so i'm going to come back i don't have a good spot to pull measurements off of here so i'm going to pull this back uh 0.2 and this one's going to go back 0.1 i think that'll give me a good look enough depth to to really catch what that is so same thing here i'll go 0.2 back this way here i'll go back 0.1 all right and we got that that looks that looks awesome um so like i said i do have a little bit of cleanup to do here though so the issue right now if i exit out so you can see it's coming together the two spots didn't get wonky well it's it's the same spot we're looking at from both sides is my two edges are crossing over each other this is probably the toughest part about dealing with this wedge i was expecting a wedge joke there but okay sorry i guess we moved off that there was no hard part dealing with wedge though because he was you know he was generally pretty amicable oh biggs liked him enough so all right i'm gonna grab a rectangle and pull it from here to somewhere along this line let's see come on give me give me a face give me a face there we go that's what i want so in doing that now i can actually split those faces and then delete them out so all i have to do is grab this stuff i'm going to grab a whole mess of stuff and just say intersect face with selection and that's going to break that it actually it starts off seeming kind of messy but as i come in here right now and i just kind of chip away at what's left behind sure why that heaven there we go chip chip chip chip and let's see right here this is the one this spot's gonna get a little weird nope there we go take that up to here get rid of all this get this erase that what we got going here get rid of that get rid of oh no get rid of this yeah we actually get rid of all of this then now we just get rid of all this extra geometry all right that's orient faces there we go so that half is what should look like if i exit out now well it'll be weird it's hard it's hard to clean this stuff up because i have to clean it up on both sides so i can see that this edge looks right this edge looks obviously still not right so we get to come in and finish that up also so i'm gonna do the same thing real quick i'm just gonna drop a rectangle from here to here and i have so many intersecting lines that's why it's not closing that right away but that's okay break for me why is it this is so much messier to do than the burj khalifa um the burj was extremely that was like paint by numbers that was so smooth which figured out the formula yeah that's true well i had to figure out how to count layers or count floors that's that's obviously was something that uh that got a little rougher than it should have been i feel all right clean this up on the inside get rid of lines get rid of lines here just get rid of that get rid of that get rid of that get rid of that huh where did my face go there we go a little bit of brute force here oh because that's why see how that that line doesn't quite line up it goes high there hi hi there all right but yeah i'll just grab all that delete it erase uh-huh let's erase some more so yeah like i was saying this this ends up this is always the uh i think the roughest part is this angle section i guess what i could have done i could have modeled that as a solid and just intersected the corners or something like that but let's see all right there we go so it all comes together that's the important part is that we get that in the end good time to save and let's peek out all right looking better we're looking more like the picture now i still feel like that seems a little low oh i got rid of my ceiling on accident drag this across here take this back are you just going to just even though we know that they're slightly different in height or we believe that you're just going to make them all the same size do we believe that i don't know i don't know what we believe um well it's hard to read those numbers it is that is true all right what are you doing here my my ceiling all right let's oops missed it by that much all right get rid of this i want a line somewhere i got a a break in something oh i'm not even close to that point there we go all right there we go now we got that looking better all right i'm gonna come in here now i'm gonna bring down my whatever it's called column cap capital capital all right i'm gonna bring it down half point five no point one there we go all right there we go give her some extra lines give me a nice clean surface to work off of right here all right and now i got to go let me go pull some more uh numbers just something something to work off of for these pieces as i start putting together so if i peek over here again i made this oh that piece goes back underneath there also cool we'll do that right now and then i have this capital then i have some columns and some bases the base is the plant the plinth my mistake oh my face is so red oh there's something that's for real though um all right so it's about a point four column column oh not colin is that what happens i think that's what happens oh which means i gotta cut that again ah you know what i'm gonna i'm gonna leave it right now because once i do that it's it's gonna cover itself up so there's potential cleanup to happen there but uh yeah it's gonna work okay let's get some posts in here let's get or a column or whatever all right so if i take this rotate that you can put a rectangle in that is i guess i can't do that grab that put that right there uh i'm gonna offset this slightly bring it down i'm going to put a circle in the middle of it so i'm going to find the midpoint here and the midpoint here i'm going to draw lines because i'm off axis on one of these two sides so i can't i can't use some of the standard uh yeah what i would normally do all right so that is my column width and i know there's there's probably in real life some taper to this column but uh oh we can do that we'll i'll add that grab these four lines i'm going to scale them that's my my quick and dirty uh capital and then we need i can get rid of this too hidden geometry don't need it not right a second um so i got a base here that's about all right we'll say 0.2 so i'm going to come in here and you know i'll do i'll copy this option copy that down here that up 0.2 and come down to the bottom get rid of this circle grab this piece scale it i know i'm scared so as i scale you guys are noticing probably that my box doesn't align because i'm off axis uh it doesn't matter though because when i scale and i'm holding on the modifier key i mod i'm going from the the center so because this is a perfect square even though the scale box is moving around as long as i pull out of the center and uniformly scale it uh everything should still line up i just use the term should i'm aware i know i know what that means all right so i'm going to get that taper on the column real quick just because i can it's so easy grab it scale it down a little bit there's my taper and i know these are ornamental columns they actually have a lot more going on than this but for this particular uh case i got a lot more building to draw so we gotta we gotta get through this piece like nowish all right i'm gonna come in here and i'm gonna clean up a few pieces here clean up a few lines here step out all right looks all right uh come back in here with get rid of the piece the pieces i don't need so i get rid of this one get rid of these lines right here and then these lines some of these lines came back as i started making uh my geometry changes so i'm going to shift erase these edge lines again so i get nice smooth intersections nice clean edges all right let's see how that looks all right there we go that looks cool um oh missed one and i i might as well i'll keep my axis or my my uh placement point right here um you know what i'm just going to do this too i know this this is going to get covered up but at least my layers will look better if i won't have that hole in the bottom this this feels better to me all right so there we go that is the first level so i'm going to go ahead and grab this and make that into a new component i'm gonna call it level two the next level i'm gonna save all right so we'll do this just to see what happens i'm gonna grab this whole thing i'm going to option copy it straight up and i will say 5x okay so there's opportunity there to fine tune because i could come in here and the layers are like a portion of a meter different in height but for right now what so what i would do just to throw this out there if i knew that this top layer was say 0.4 meters taller than the rest what i would do i'm not doing it because i don't have that information honestly i would grab all of these right click and say make unique wait grab them right click why don't i have make unique all right is there only one of them again huh that's interesting i don't have make unique there um one i can make unique yeah but for some reason i can't make oh i can make two unique maybe you're selecting something that's not a component in the mix i assume so let's see i should be getting just 30 components huh that's weird let's turn one off then i can make unique all right so i would make them unique i'm going to delete you because you're a troublemaker not sure why that happen all right and now what i can do is i can come into one of these i can grab this section and then i could move it up vertically 0.4 so that'll shove that up and because it's a component if i exit out all of those move up so now this level is point four taller than all the other levels so it's pretty quick pretty easy in fact you know what here's what i'll throw out there i'll do that for all of them if somebody wants to go do the math on what height each of those levels is because uh much as you guys enjoy watching me sit and use my calculator on my phone that was sarcasm i actually do enjoy it i understand what you're trying to say i'm not like everybody uh yeah so if somebody wants to calc out based on one of those images the level height of each level i will adjust the heights appropriately at some point just throw those up on the forum all right right now though i'm going to save because i'm so good at that and we're going to come in and get this base worked out um so if i look at this base it looks like there's half as many it looks like every other so there's probably 15 um pieces on the bottom for height we have we'll say 13.5 i am ball parking so i'm going to take here's our here's our default wedge so i'm going to grab this wedge and grab it right by its antilles i'm going to rotate it because one wedge here on the bottom is twice as big as what's on the top i'm going to take these two i'm going to make them into a new component i'm going to call this a big wedge go into my big wedge and i'm just going to explode that geometry there we go this is now my wedge for the ultimate base i'm going to grab all this stuff i'm just going to move it vertically just like just send it get it out of my way and now i can bring my big wedge in here stick it right here and i can rotate that 14x should give me a full circle and i can grab do my my base geometry there uh which i'm kind of looking at it looks like it's actually got kind of an arch and a uh column like right up against the geometry so assume it's like right inside here so we'll we'll get something like that created all right um what did i say 15 point something somebody should i don't know i don't know what this guy's doing what's the app you use for showing your your keystrokes visualize i think okay yes visualize it's okay it's it's uh it works sometimes all right i'm gonna do this a little bit different from the way i did the previous levels um i'm going to hmm here's what i want to do so it's got i got some like multiple steps coming down that sort of thing uh like this here's i i'm going to change my background image to this image because i want to get a little more detail here not have to go back and forth like i have been so i'm gonna go to my styles edit my watermark and add in this guy instead and put it over here make it big enough that i can see i really just need to get an idea of what this footprint means and i don't care if it's covered up by my menu because i just need to see this chunk right here all right so that'll work i can i can work with that all right so this line right here if i trace that up that is that comes to right here okay cool um you know what i might do i might come in here and steal a little geometry i might grab this and this and this ctrl c to copy that hop down here come into one of these command v there we go and then i'll rotate that from here to here awesome uh that way okay so i got the start of this geometry here now i'm gonna come down and cut back drop down i'm gonna cut out you know this this whole thing so this is what i'm saying this this starts to get a little weird because again of my lack of uh straight geometry everything in here is going to be off axis so i have to be conscious of that as i do this so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take this piece right here this face and i'm going to option and i'm going to bring it down we'll just bring it down one meter here and that's going to be this break right here at the bottom i'll do the same thing just just put geometry where i want to break so let's say how far oh actually came down so that's to here so i actually want to drop down now i want to go down further let's say like okay 0.03 so i'm going to take this i'm going to move it down like that two times three times ah heck four times oops all right so i have that array right now um what i'm gonna do now is i'm going to do some offsetting i think i'm going to grab these this line right here and i'm going to offset it out let's see again i'm just kind of pulling just rough geometry from here so i'm going to pull this out 0.1 so i'm going to go here and oops offset 0.1 and then the reason i'm doing that so so what offsetting will do i start to do a little bit more work here right that gives me those lines and now i can connect this back up like this i guess i wonder if i could play with scale to make that happen that doesn't quite look big enough does it just wing it i think that that's probably probably what happened why there were these why took 200 years is periodically they'd have to just stop because they're frustrated that it wasn't all lining up well i'm just thinking like so if i scale like this it's going to stretch it out but i think if i hit shift if i'm as i'm coming out this way i think it'll maintain that let's see what this looks like yeah i like i like this cool that's better that's easier and then this one's just gonna get put down like this and then take this one scale it out give me that little little footing down there at the bottom yep all right so this is this one's still not right this is this is bugging me i'm going to get rid of this oops get rid of this you're this take this scale it out again just a little bit more just a just a bit more and it looks like i have a little bit of a just a little bit of that happening i'm sculpting right now i'm sculpting a monument all right all right there we go get rid of that that gives me kind of more what i'm this this kind of this footing shape i think is what we're what we're working on right here everybody cool i'm going to flatten or smooth these smoothing i'm going to erase get softened and smooth soften and smoothening these ones i'm just shift so i'm hiding these edges these are ones they're going to all look in plane and then oh well i'm going to come back by my there we go so that's that's what i'm looking for my scale is not perfect on there i could definitely go back and the nice thing is once i have that geometry in there this is what i was talking about sculpting is i can grab any of this now at this point and i can start stretching it so you start pulling it down making it bigger that sort of thing what i want to do now is come in here and start getting these columns in because it does look like actually what i think is happening i lost my my this i'm gonna grab that and bring that back down and put it right here so what i got going on here is it looks like it does step in a little bit from this up at the top not a lot uh it comes back just a little bit so what i'm going to do is i'm going to grab this line these lines right here i'm going to offset them back just a touch we'll say like 0.15 for lack of a better number and when you offset in i'll end up with these edges here that i want to come in and make sure i get rid of that little little guy right there and it'll be one on the opposite side too just a little tiny just a little thing and then what i can do is take that push that down i'm going to hit option to make a new face and pull that all the way down to here then i can come in here and erase erase erase there we go all right so there's my my set in geometry so on that it looks like we have our post and our uh vault built um i somewhere had a picture but uh i did not save wherever that picture was of the lower section only that was the the forum that would be in a great place it would have been that would have been nice that would have been good that would have been good so i'm gonna come in here i'm gonna i'm just gonna make this fairly fairly uh speedily you know what i'm trying to think you know what i think i'll do i think i'll come in and i'm going to model my column out here and i'm going to so i'm searching google trying to find pictures and i feel like uh everybody that took a picture of the tower is trying to accomplish like the dutch the dutch angle i can't decide if it's everybody needs just tilting their camera or if it's just that it's tilted image but i can't find any good pictures of the bass i don't know what your picture look like no i'm just i'm clicking i can't click and talk at the same time multi-task oh that's tough all right so i'm going to grab just the edges and i'm going to scale this shift option to bring that in like this all right i'm gonna take that bring that up i however tall that has to be it's significantly taller than than the other pieces and then same thing up top draw a rectangle from the center of the circle option key will bring up the middle let me bring that out to 0.5 by 0.5 oops 0.5 common point five there we go and then i will pull that up scale that out and that's that is the geometry on which we will build our arch so i'm going to grab that and make it a group i'm not really concerned about a component because i'm not going to copy this piece of geometry around it's going to be part of the larger component so i'm just making it a group i'm going to peggy's added a couple images at the bottom oh sweet if you want awesome thank you sir okay sure i think i i should not say sir thank you keggie sir or ma'am whatever you you are cool nice it is hard to tell what's going on with some of that um because they've adapted some of it to make it work for the the slant so some of the geometry the basics looks a little weird um so what i got to do is i need to align this column to basically a line going from here to here so i'm going to do is i'm going to grab it i'm going to take it by a point i'm going to put that point right here and now to align it to this line i could actually draw this line this line is like that oh i have a line to it sweet let me just grab this point stick it right here and then i can push it along the red axis axis into the building all right to that point i like that that's good i'm gonna come in here this comes down into the stairs like this it might push it back a little bit more we got the right look going we got the right look i think i made them i think i made this a little a little anemic though they do look kind of puny yeah let's uh fortunately easy enough to to fix i'm just gonna bring the whole column up until i think it looks good all right and then i can come in here and i can grab this geometry shove it down to about where i think that's going to go we'll say there i know we're playing this kind of fast and loose but uh i got no other butts but yeah so that's what we're doing most people only have one button that i think that's fair yeah sounds right sounds right i think that checks out too scientifically speaking all right now let's get that taking it just a little bit there we go i like i like that that's uh yeah it needs to be shorter okay awesome now we'll throw in a couple of quick arches and you know what i'm going to do is i'm going to take i'm just a little bit different from the way it did last time i'm going to take my inside further in and build my arches out i think that's going to be a little bit easier than what i did before so again i'll grab these two lines offset them to where i want that arch the inside of the wall to be coming that far and then again option push pull to pull that up to here so now i have two faces one is the outside that i can carve onto the other is the inside which is what i want to maintain so as i look at these arches it looks like they're just two levels so here's what i'm going to do i'm going to come in and i'm going to draw a line one line from here to here i just want to do half so i'm only gonna do one of those uh i got something like this going straight up something like that here i'll just take that i'll start with the line there and take that all the way up same thing i did before we'll take this line right here we'll rotate it on this surface that way we can figure out where that arc is supposed to be give me tangent give me tangent yeah so that'll stay on the outside then i'll have so that goes all the way through oh there is so there is two steps no yes no yes i i like how firm and committed you are to that decision i don't know what i'm doing no i mean i do i just i don't know i haven't decided what i'm but this is how this is happening i know what i'm doing but i don't think i know what i'm doing here basically all right so we'll take that to here so this will go all the way through this will be halfway through so i can take this right here and say offset this nope f offset that not offset push pull come on man push pull that halfway through so to right there and then this one of course is just gonna go away right i start to bring it through like this all the way back like that i think this is going to be easier to clean up than the last one because all the faces should be there no they're not because i didn't i never i deleted my face here so i need to put some more lines in just to keep this closed up that should give me all the faces that i need to intersect same thing i did before i come back out here grab everything that's up top here intersect face with selection and now again i should be able to just come through here start deleting much easier than last time see i'm learning that's what's happening right now that got that got easier because i learned something that's exciting to see learning you know the quirks churning like that me specifically learning you specifically okay cool i'll take it awesome so now to get that over here how do i do this without making a huge mess i think we can delete that and now i can grab the faces that i need to hold on to here let's let's do this now to clean up clean up select select reverse and now i should be able to grab this face this face this face this face this face this face that's all i should need i'm gonna say cv i'm going to scale to negative one to invert it and if i know i need it from a different point from this point right here wow that was surprisingly easy not bragging i'm legitimately surprised how easy that was cool all right so i'm going to move this guy back further because as i did that i subtracted this imperative didn't appear that anybody has mapped out the floor level the levels yeah we're just going to leave them right where they are then you bunch of mathers non-mathers i respect that i'm wondering right now if it was to grab this and make it into a group would that group be solid it would appear not is this solid also not oh this is why i got some i got some holes i wonder if i can use solid tools to join let's run through here i might have some line segments from cleanup that i left behind too that might be why i won't be able to get a nice clean solid but let's see if i can do it still not solid i don't have solid inspector installed so duh hey hey hey there there are some extensions worth always having there seriously that that really does fall into the you should probably just have that category i'll probably will do that later on today okay not a big deal here's what i'm going to do to get these two pieces merged i'm going to take this piece right here i'm going to right click it from the outside i'm going to say intersect face with model then when i come in and click into it oops oh i squished that i scaled it i scaled that totally wrong um sorry that's bothering me how squished my my column is all right there that's better all right so i'm going to try it again i'm going to click right here and i'm going to say intersect bases with model but if i come in here you notice that there's nothing there's no intersection there's no lines or anything if i come out here and grab that what intersected was it went around and it made all these lines where those intersections happen so what i'm going to do is i'm going to grab i have those lines selected these are the lines that aren't part of the group that's the main column and they aren't part of the group that's the column so i'm going to grab them and make them into another group i'm going to copy that i'm going to go into the column i'm going to edit paste in place and there's those lines go ahead explode it now i put in a group just for handling so when i do that now i can come in here just delete this back chunk off and now i have just the i don't know where this intersection came from i have just the geometry that sits on the outside so if i click out of this group now see that oh that's where it came from like that now if i come into this one and i say the same thing i go edit paste and place it puts that those same lines in here which i can then right click and explode and now what i can do is i can just kind of come up here work my way up the model and make a column shaped hole in my model oh there's some extra lines extra lines so this is what you would do if you can't get a solid or don't want to spend the time cleaning up your model to make it solid i could do that and now if i grab both of these i can explode them and now i have those two pieces properly intersecting cool all right so once again let's run through here get rid of some edges hold down shift get rid of any of my edges that i have here's one here's one here's one here's one i believe i have them all over the top yeah so hide all these edges good there are some all right let's click out and see how that looks all right okay should probably get rid of that too we don't need this line and i should be able to get rid of these all right there we go so there's our base now i can grab these guys right here bring them down vertically whoo baby that's looking pretty cool oh i didn't continue my hole down inside there did i um here's what i'll do here i'll come into this i will again steal a single line grab this command c click out click out come in here edit paste in place then grab that guy rotate it to turn on my hidden edges to use this as a snap point copy them actually we'll just i'll just push pull this down hide my edges again all right i think i have more geometry to hide i do because ah i'm not too worried about but those are the floors all right so the exterior is looking pretty solid last piece i got a model is the very top my favorite part of components is you like spend all this time making this one perfect little piece and you're just like oh it's going to take forever and then you get to re get to reuse that component and all sudden you're just like oh well i'm done that is the murder yes that is the best part okay so the top is is different in that uh in that it's different that's the weird like alternating arches there yeah so we got a big arch a column this bell arch but there's a bell on the big one too is there oh big bell big bell little bell so we got a big bell arch and a little bell arch um so i'm just trying to think of how to break this i think what i should do is break it into smaller pieces by this right here because i got one two three and that repeats see that's what i got this this is one arch two arch three arch and then below that is where we have and it kind of aligns too because you have column this column's interrupted by a full arch so one two three mid arch to mid arch between each of those making each of those three three chunks yeah and it kind of looks like you're not going to work out all the way around though well that's what i'm trying to think is this are there 15 of these all the way around is it half of what this is there's probably five of those oh or yeah yeah probably okay so that's good uh so i'm gonna grab this one last time i'll bring it in here i'm gonna line it to the center point because i know that's my center point i'm gonna pull that up drop it right on top and then like i did before to get 15 rather than 30 i'm going to take this option copy it to here group these two together open the group explode these two all right that's now my one piece i can take that now option rotated 14x 15 copies in total and i can start modeling this so first thing is i see that when i get to the top of one two three four five six uh i do have some like steps going on here and this comes in a significant amount so if i look this point if that if i look at that point right there it comes in about two meters so i'm gonna start by grabbing this grabbing these two lines offsetting them two meters wow really i guess so why didn't that copy to my other oh i grouped them oh come on man this is your first timer first time here jeez all right let me let me do some quick erase everybody forget what just happened all right so i'm gonna not group this whoo but make it a component my upper wedge there we go and it kind of looks like so if that's two meters back that's this is right here it looks like i have like maybe a step halfway in so i'm gonna go ahead and do that right now too and offset this one and then we'll go ahead and push this up a little bit push this up a little bit grab that offset that back something like that it gives us our this little piece here comes up to here push this back down something like that like that i don't know if these are steps too they might be steps it's kind of working off of a uh definitely a uh not real super detailed drawing you might even call it a silhouette i would i would i would personally call it that yes not everybody would think i was thinking you might some people would i mean i would other people might be opposed to that and that's cool that's their choice i'm not here to tell people what they can and can't call stuff that i don't know what it is all right so there's kind of our the base we're going to go off of i should probably grab that all and reverse faces all right so now that is what's going to go up and need some more we need some more dimensions here oops get rid of that 14x all right so that's the the base of our top and uh let's just let's just measure right quick the top arch so it looks like this is where that goes up to so we'll call it 15.8 with another one above that wait 15. what did i just say how to get 15. what's going on here 5.8 all right so we'll go up here 5.8 and then i want to create this little little cap thing so let me go ahead and grab these offset them a little bit and close that up and close that up give me that little give me a little lip awesome and then i'm going to take this so i want to go up one from here grab all of this and then take this all the way up there we go so rough geometry but i think that gets us kind of what we have what we're looking at here for a single a single section there now each of these sections will have the top arch as we're looking at this right here so they're all going to have this top arch that goes into a column so again same thing i can split the arch either way i could start the arch going across the whole side or i could go both ways because i have this break in the middle already right here i'll i'll pre or well you can't see it because it's softened this break here i'll probably start the middle and go either way i'll also include uh capital cap thingy i'll probably include that in it also i'll get that made up first and it'll just drop down to nothing and then i'll have to go in and make some pieces individual because they'll change obviously each of these is going to go a little bit different all right so let's do that let's see so as i look at my arches here grab one of these i don't want to be too arbitrary but i'm just going to pick a nice round number a meter down sounds great i always feel like whole numbers feel sort of squarish like 0.9 is round because it's all i don't know that might just be me that could be you you can be that all right so there we go i'm going to come over this way 0.5 and drop that back like that go this way 0.5 drop that straight back and i'm going to pull both of those down 0.3 because i can oops just peeking inside do a little bit of cleanup here all right there we go everybody's on the outside now all right i'm going to take this and i'm going to shoot pull this out a little bit that's going to build my arches off of and i believe i should save i believe i should save and i also believe oh i'm in a group so everything's hidden yeah i hit it all for myself um yeah so i'm just going to put two levels of offset here on these columns around these arches i should keep that on all right let's see how would i want to do this um let's here's what i'll do i'll grab this bring that line that way i can get a perfect quarter arc right here drop a line now can i get my perfect got some inferencing issues so i'm just going to drop i'm just going to put a circle oops have you saved lately because andy made a really good point it's a little and it's a little scary this is a scary time to not be saving oh of course i did sometime at some point there i saved you're absolutely probably right there we go boom all right so i'm gonna take that right there cool so this one will go in part way we'll go in point two on this one and this one we'll go in point one all right there's our stuff we're at the smart way cut down on the amount of uh intersecting or drawing geometry we need to and then i'll do the same thing i did before i'm just going to grab all that geometry and mass intersect face with selection it's gone now i come through here start erasing stuff yes yes and yes and yes yes and yes awesome there's my super sweet arch right click orient faces um do a little bit more work here before i copy this over because i want that to be maintained and then this i'll just push down all the way like that that gives me the arch i'm looking for i think we'll see what happens all right so i'm going to grab this face this face i turn off my hidden geometry because i want to grab this stuff twice which means i will have to break this break that face um go back to shift selecting this this this this this and this all right oh cv scale negative one and now i should be able to drop this right here everything should line up i should be able to do a quick erase here here here awesome all right so that's my upper arch again now this is going to change a lot because i have all these upper pieces but remember some of these are going to continue through but then this one's going to get a whole other arch underneath it but i have geometry i can start from with this and also those top arches two of the two of the three one of the three is just kind of goes in like a like a dome yeah and some of it all the way through yeah um so what i was thinking let me tell you what i was thinking i'm not saying this is the right thing but this is what i was thinking is to take three of these and make these into a component open that up do my big arch here bring this up run them through all that stuff yeah that's what i'm gonna do so i'm gonna take these three pieces i'm gonna make that into a new compo a component a new component and i'm gonna call this this is going to be this is the big this is the mega arch no mega wedge mega wedge uber wedge ooh i like that better but i already hit enter yeah well sorry it's not that personal you do nothing absolutely nothing okay so now i'm gonna come into mega wedge grab these explode them do some some quick cleanup because there's some stuff i don't want here i got to get my inside opening in here too um it's gonna oop that should be real really race actually no you know i'm not going to mess with those because some of those are going to help me find where to put the other arch so i'm going to leave those pieces in there for right now i do want to get my circle my inside cut out so i'm going to jump into the ring here grab this guy control c to copy come out all the way out double click into here edit paste in place grab that line rotate it from here to here what i should do that five times yeah and before i push pull this up to get my circle all the way through i'm gonna grab these pieces and weld them now i can push this up and that gives me a nice smooth line uh rather i'm cheating a little bit look look how smooth this is not that soft and not down below uh sorry sorry lower levels should have been an upper level if you that bothered you okay it's not like you're doing with a cast leveling system here i am i i i'm really kind of being a little bit unfair you're right that's what you gotta do okay now what i need to figure out so this is a full half circle column column and that where that half circle ends is about where this windowsill windowsill sits at so we'll call it robot here i guess so if i was to take a circle i'm use this face as i'm doing this out of context unintentionally too but if i was to come here and draw a circle no it has to be bigger than that so i'm going to take it out to about there oops something something did not break there so that's my arch yeah that gives me space to put my column all right so i'm gonna go with that as my arch size which wow that really that really that worked out pretty well all right and i'll take that straight up to the bottom of this capitol over here all right so i'm going to come in here now i can take this piece push this up to the bottom of this and same thing here get rid of that get that and now i need to take this piece push it through here same thing here grab all that once again intersect base with selection so this is a question that comes up a lot that i want to just talk about because we're messing with it right now people a lot of times want to use solid tools in situations that maybe it's unnecessary solid tools are great if you're working with components and pieces but if you're inside a single piece sometimes just intersect is all you need um we see it on the forum a lot where people get in there and they wanna they wanna use uh use that tool which is not a bad thing but it can be difficult so it's not always the perfect thing to use i feel like probably a lot of a lot of folks assume that solids tool replaced it or they never knew about the intersect with model stuff so yeah i mean it's good it's it's solid tools are awesome but uh you don't always need to use them all right so i'm thinking about grabbing this and intersecting but i'm worried because this arch is going to go over one two three four faces it's gonna get weird yeah but i'll just i'll do it i have not decided what i'm doing at this point oh but you know what i do i do know i want to do is get rid i get rid of it i feel like i don't want this geometry here in the middle all right so this this piece stops right here um carry that line out there i carry this line out here oops take a line from there vertically up to here i'll hide the rest of my real quick and then i'm going to bring all right so i'm just going to make make this a single face right now we'll do this clean up while it's nice and uninterrupted um and then i'll intersect that arc oops all right so that's that's nice and clean i could clean this up too right now actually while i'm here option erase all these lines give me give me a nice smooth couple of faces same thing up here this one gets erased this one gets smoothed oh we're so close i love i love this last few percent when we get to this point finishing i don't always finish things good what's that when the plan comes together that's right cool all right um oops get rid of that too erase erase all right so now i gotta get this so i'm gonna grab this this face and these two faces i'm going to say intersect base with model and that's going to give me that to cut out now i got to figure out what to do with it this is the part this is the part i haven't figured out yet so if i look over here so these arches arcs stop up high and then the wall comes back out it looks like so it actually looks like i jumped ahead there i should actually do this first take this that as few faces as possible involved in all this so now a column will go here a column will go here and my arch will i should really remember this detail but it will drop all the way down all right so something like that the reason this isn't so straightforward as i want it to be is because there's we're putting this arch on an arch or you know this compound shape i don't know what this is called so if i just come in here intersect face with model i'll get this right here i can't just take this and push it back in though because it breaks right here oops it breaks right i need a bigger mouse pad i'm getting caught caught on the edge fancy space mouse didn't help with that did it no it did not so if i grab one of these and i push it back in say 0.1 right and then i'll do the same thing here and here and here now what i got to do is i got to grab all that intersect face with selection and then i come in here and erase all this because that geometry lapped over itself to get that this is where honestly one of the one of my go-to first installations is uh however many fredo tools i can get my hands on uh fredo has of course fredo corner uh topo shaper and of course in this case what i'd want is joint push pull because this would be a single function oh see and here's where it's going to get funny because not funny haha either funny uh oh kind of funny because this is also this compound geometry we're making is not going to be pretty not terrible to clean up but a little ugly not not beautiful all right but we'll get it we'll get it check it out we got it cleanup is always the part that i i dread like i keep trying to make decisions while i'm modeling to avoid having to clean up later oh absolutely all right but yeah that's this is definitely a spot where a handful of the right extensions would have made that a one-step process um of course now the whole thing offsets and then goes in again oh so if i grab this i'm curious no i can't i can't do that because it's compound so i would have to come out here grab this guy grab everything except for the bottom offset that get rid of that then come into this again select this face intersect face with you know what i think i can cheat here i'm going to cheat i'm totally going to cheat oh yeah i like this all right i'm going to come in here grab this make it a group come into this group take that all the way through so it's going to come to the inside grab this base right here first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to realign my axes so i'm going to come into tools axes and put my axes for this group like this then i can grab this face scale it i like it and now i'm going to grab this whole thing reverse the faces cut it come in here paste in place explode and grab it all intersect intersect with selection and now i can again just come in here start erasing get rid of this stuff and i reversed it so that the the white faces would be on the inside so once i blew it all up like this i'm kind of done there we go i'm gonna grab that smooth that out oh yeah that's better all right so i know i still got to put columns up but i just i can't i'm not good at waiting so i'm going to do that for x that's kind of cool i like it all right let's throw a couple columns in here real quick all right i'm going to grab that line bring it over here whoa whoa whoa rotate that 90 degrees and put all right that's the most complicated possible way to draw a square right there [Music] you did a great job all right now i'm going to take that and i'm going to put it on axes just to make this whole drawing process a lot easier i'm going to grab it and make it into a group i'm going to make sure it's at the right height vertically okay there we go and then i'll grab another one of these option drop it down to where i want this post to be that height right there and i'm just going to kind of i'm going to make some i'm going to make some quick oops i did not mean to make those into separate groups actually doesn't even matter if it's a group right now and bring it up a little bit i'm just pretty much do the same thing i did before grab these two i'm inferencing the weird stuff oops scale to 0.6 scale this way 0.6 coming here with the circle in the middle all right so it's a quick column but it works these guys here don't need them i don't like this it's too it's too sticky outy that's a designer term you guys may not have heard it before all right let's kill that about the middle we'll go to like point eight point eight all right that's better all right so i'm going to grab that now now i'm going to make it into a group i'm going to grab it and let's see where is this going to go this is going to go right here i can rotate that so it gets in line with his face and then we'll slide it back i'll slide i'll grab it by the center point i'll slide that out just a touch all right perfect i like that i'm going to take that now and i want to rotate it to make it easier to place i'm just going to rotate it i'm going to create a couple lines real quick to give me a line to something to rotate off of so i'm just going to grab this line trace it back like that there we go and then i can rotate it from this point to that point right there and just get rid of this all right a little bit of cleanup tap in here get rid of my extra faces that i don't need the reason i do get rid of the faces also i know i'm just i'm hiding these lines uh shift erasing these lines that overlap the reason i get rid of the actual faces is because they will show up so even if these lines are hidden you'll get that little flickering of the inside the front back faces at those seams by getting rid of those faces altogether you prevent that so it is an important step when you're doing that clean up shift so just keep hiding hiding hiding hide hide hide hide and unfortunately got to do that again it's too bad you can't copy the status of a line you know what i mean sort of like in excel whenever you copy a cell and replace only the formatting right to be able to say grab these lines and then copy them around to the other side and have them make everything on that side disappear also that would be cool i mean you're kind of doing that because you're working with a component that's true so actually yeah i mean i could have theoretically i could have modeled only half of this and that would that would have been the answer to that whoops i over i over erased too much all right seems like we got one step left which is we're going to make this all into one big group and we got it tip it and then i push it over 3.99 degrees right now apparently that changes i'm confused i thought it was supposed to be stabilized so i thought i thought there was no more tipping all right 3.9 huh seems like it should be more than that wait here we can use this to oh yeah it looks yeah nailed it nice where am i just tipping it with my mouse i kind of figured i can make it perfect no matter what right but uh yeah well here let's go camera uh my little marker did just is covering up part of my screen that i actually need here i guess i am covering that up there's even a big touch screen you can just push buttons um uh let's go to standard views front okay yeah i'd buy that oh here here's what i was gonna let's go let's go to camera standard views go to back so i can get all touristy on this thing bring it in oh there it is all right now i can get my my tourist photo oh there we go push it back up perfect perfect hope somebody snapped that one for me um yeah okay cool well that's that's the lean tower pisa we did it mostly we didn't do doorways i know we skipped a couple things but uh that is technically no no bells in the belfries anymore they take them out tell me oh no bells are for for suckers that's going to be my new thing anytime i don't model something i'd be like yeah yeah i don't want yeah why would i do that yeah that's that's not that's not the thing all right there we go get in here oh yeah that's the stuff that's cool that that turned out kind of cool i like it i do like that that's a lot of repetitive gel yeah it looks a lot better than it did 45 minutes ago yeah you're right i mean this is this is the visual proof of the power of components right you get one down you're like oh that was a lot of work to do that and then you copy it 15 times or 29 times in a circle and you're like oh that's cool then copy that three six times and that's even cooler that turned out pretty neat well there we go this is the uh the first live model of for first sketchup live of 2021 and i think it turned out pretty cool i think that turned out uh that was a pretty good one i i have to admit i chose this because i typed in famous buildings i think into google and i went across the top and the ones that we hadn't done yet this was the one that i got to and i was like that that could that's something we could do maybe maybe next we start doing wonders with the world that would work that sounds good and made winter to the world that would be fun so again i want to just throw us out there again forums.sketchup.com we have the schedule of what we're going to put here but that's also a great spot for you guys to give us kind of your ideas we're going to kind of go with themes each week so we're going to do like uh you know big buildings like this and then next week we're gonna go a little bit different because we're gonna kind of go with more of an entourage piece next week we're gonna model some ge appliances uh based off of the drawings they share on their website so that'll be fun make sure you come back we're gonna do i'm gonna do as many appliances i can fridge dishwasher range hood we'll do as much as we can but that'll be a lot of fun um the week after that's going to be really cool because we're going to dive into some live components live so we're going to have some live live components on sketchup live uh that'll be a good time uh it's it's so weird to hear you talking about what you plan to model on into the future like it's like it's like you're uh nostradamus or something hey i i just i just do my job i don't know what happens when it happens without you i won't claim that um i do want to throw something else we're doing new and this is just kind of more or less for more more of a fun thing but if you're available so tomorrow morning at nine o'clock we're going to do a live stream on instagram where we're gonna cover like the top points so this is what did aaron learn this week basically is how it's gonna go down so i'm gonna look back over this model and maybe it's the key points that should be called out as far as what got modeled or stuff that i learned or should have already known i don't know i'm not sure exactly what the message is going to be i got to go back and review what i did but we will be doing a short live stream on instagram because we can't unfortunately instagram won't let us actually take this live model and broadcast it on there so we're trying to show instagram some love so we'll be doing a short uh instagram live tomorrow of uh what we got out of this live model so hopefully you guys will join us for that it should be a lot of fun uh like i said just something to do if you have instagram it'll pop up and tell you when we're live but uh kind of a fun little way to like a what's the thing you eat after you're done with dessert not a dessert yeah an anti-appetizer no palate cleanser i don't know i think i started saying things that i didn't know where i was going with them again it just happened yeah no i was just kind of watching it it was like a train wreck yep okay i'm gonna write that down don't talk unless you know what you're gonna say cover that tomorrow thank you guys thanks for hanging out with us you made the uh the first sketchup live of 2021 a good time i hope you guys like that learn something i will get this model all buttoned up and put it up on the warehouse and i'll link to it in our forums section so if you guys want to come over there and grab a copy of it from that link it should be available so uh any parting words of wisdom jody you got anything uh see you next week that's a perfect way to end it all right that's as good as i got i like it see you guys next week bye guys you
