classes this week including reading uh tomorrow and then task one more speaking q a and more speaking later in the week okay so a lot of students wonder you know how do i get a good band score on the speaking interview the simplest way to tell you how to get a good score is basically answer explain example and use quantitative information i'm not too worried about qualitative information because i think students do that naturally anyways so give an answer give an explanation that's clear give an example that's clear and quantify and we're going to practice that today hi marvito from philippines we have lots of students from philippines these days it's great to see all right um so uh let's practice this today let's warm up with the introduction so you get to the speaking part of the exam it's an interview make sure to arrive early try to find some other students to practice speaking with that will help your fluency and your confidence so go to the exam center about 30 to 45 minutes before one hour before hey great okay find another student and then practice speaking with them if they're shy they refuse you that's okay find another student all right take some speaking scripts with you then finally you get called for your interview and uh you go into a nice private room and there will be an examiner and the examiner will say welcome to the speaking portion of the ielts exam my name is adrian i will be your examiner for this part of the test it has three parts we'll give you instructions for each firstly uh what is your full name okay no matter how often you hear this feel comfortable confident answering it sound excited okay muhammad izzat says my given name is muhammad and my surname is omran please call me momo which is my nickname muhammad great i love that nickname momo lydia says my full name is lydia your guess while lydia is my first name your guess is my family name you can call me lydia as well if it's okay with you uh you don't need the if it's okay with you that's a little bit awkward lydia but i like the way you said the first part so saying while lydia is my first name gregas is my family name that's natural sure um just say you can call me lydia it's my first name okay or you can call me by my first name lydia all right carolina sanyo says my full name's carolina sanyo please just call me carolina it's a pleasure to meet you very nice introduction carolina and i like how you said it's a pleasure to meet you that will also give you some confidence and should calm you down to say that and it's very polite okay very nice tan we see says my full name is tan with c nandi uh please just call me by my given name tan we see don't forget the word my tan was see in there okay all right samuel sadir says my given name is samuel sadir and my last name is vara please just call me samuel yeah samuel when you say the two given names first and middle my given names are okay show that you are clear on that grammar samuel so my given names are samuel sedir and my last name is vara we never talked about that i always give two name examples so i'll do a three name example this time okay just so you can see that all right i know many people have more than one given name so uh my given names are richard thomas and my surname is uh wellington uh please just call me tom and it's a pleasure to meet you sure why not that's nice carolina thanks for sharing that one with us today um so repeat after me what is your full name my given names are richard thomas and my surname is wellington please just call me tom and it's a pleasure to meet you okay all right so again importantly here students i do see this often where students give two first name or two given names when you have two given names it's names are okay my given names are all right we sometimes say first name middle name but you don't have to get that technical okay all right and then the next question always is may i see your identification if you say no then it's the end of the exam so uh you have to show the same id that you uh took with you uh to um register for the test okay so the same idea that you registered okay uh just paul says yes please uh here's my passport which i used for the ielts exam um just paul you should say yes please take a look here it is okay when you use please make sure you use it in a phrase otherwise you're asking the examiner for something and they'll be like what are you asking me for okay uh malik show a bit more fluency so malik says yes sure sir um that would be awkward english for a native exchange okay so yes sure here it is sir okay a native speaker would not say yes sure sir it's kind of awkward it's awkward um sounding as well so malik minimally you need to say yes sure here it is sir please take a look okay show fluency all right show fluency it's not a casual conversation okay danilo says yes sure here's my passport that i used to register for the ielts exam please have a look yes certainly here is my passport that i used to register for this exam please have a look okay this is polite fluent complete go with me here may i see your identification yes certainly here's my passport that i used to register for this exam please have a look great okay so then the examiner will say all right they'll look at your passport they'll look at you they'll just make sure that you are who you say you are and your passport is yours and then they will say okay here is your passport back now i will ask you some more questions on a general topic and a couple questions to get to know you better this is for part one okay so the examiner will say what is your hobby it's a very common kind of icebreaker question what is your hobby again focus on answer explain example and quantify i want you to focus on this for every single question this is our target today for every single question i want you to do this okay all right chaby says even though i love collecting rare objects from different places my favorite activity is swimming which i genuinely enjoy and can spend an unlimited amount of time doing okay chubby quantify it i go swimming at my local pool at least three to four times a week for a couple of hours okay so i want you to throw that quantitative information in there to really push that high band score all right uh beck john says my pastime activity is reading different types of literature in english thereby improving my language and knowledge uh the book i'm reading now is called the life of pi and i spent about two hours a day reading okay very good back john i know that it's hard to fit all of that into one chat it's nice beck john good job uh using the thereby okay i know that's something you have been practicing and you've used it well in this case so great all right lots of students in class today good to see marasa says one of my hobbies is reading science books this activity not only enhances my knowledge but also helps me unwind just last week i've read the book science and technology and came to know about new methodologies sure uh marasa that's good okay again quantifying students pay attention to quantifying um marasa red as like in the past tense is still r-e-a-d the spelling read red red it's all spelt r-e-a-d okay spelling of the word read does not change for past tense it's interesting but it's the way it is okay there's the rest of it becca and i see it that's great the sixth extinction for at least 30 minutes daily fantastic okay there's that quantitative detailed information very nice all right for dave says my hobby is collecting coins from all over the globe i adore traveling minimum four times a year and the more new countries i visit the more coins i have my probably have at least a thousand in my collection right for duff so get that quantification in there okay one of my favorite pastime activities is collecting coins from not only different parts of the world but also from [Music] different eras i have coins that date back to the early roman era about 200 bc and of course modern coins from us australia and zimbabwe to name a few okay my collection is at least a couple thousand coins strong all right so there is uh your answer okay uh and maybe give an explanation too here i love the story that these currencies tell all right here we go so nice full complete answer focus on answer explain example and quantification okay if you can do all of that for your answers stay on topic show some good grammar you will do a fantastic job on the exam and you will get a high band score so here we go what is your hobby one of my favorite pastime activities is collecting coins from not only different parts of the world but also from different eras i have coins that date back to the early roman era about 200 bc and of course modern coins from us australia and zimbabwe to name a few my collection is at least a couple thousand coins strong i love the story that these currencies tell all right fantastic so uh again for the next questions answer explain example quantify okay and stop okay all right so here we go uh the examiner says okay uh let's talk a little bit about singing sure why not i think most people sing every now and then um here we go first question do you like to sing why or why not okay so do you like to sing why or why not why are why not is in brackets because of course the examiner is hoping that you will include that in your answers here we go lots of answers coming up seems like we probably have some songbirds in our crew today villa gala vamsi says my hobby is doing exercise to stay fit in order to do this i will spend an hour a day along with listening to my favorite music yeah vela gala that's for the previous good for you okay lydia gergis says actually i feel free when i sing in a group or choir for me it's necessary i often experience a release of endorphins which makes me feel better and my mood is lifted especially in the evening whether among family members or childhood friends yesterday i uh used to sing they don't care about us for my for michael jackson in front of my mother and she was happy to hear my voice all right lydia nice nice example so uh you love to sing right make sure you emphasize that so yeah actually i love to sing i feel free when i sing okay so right away lydia emphasize that you love to sing okay just ball sing of course that's just paul's family name spelt differently jaspal singh says definitely i like to sing a song on different occasions like on weddings birthday parties i like to sing pop rock classical songs because it helps me relax reduce stress and worries very nice just paul a couple of corrections there when i correct your responses make sure to say them if it's too fast don't worry about it i'm speaking at a natural speed of course just check the time in the video it's 21 minutes so just paul you can come back and listen to my review and revisions after and then repeat a couple of times just so you figure out the differences in what you wrote and what i said okay carolina sanyo says yes i do i love singing since i was little uh i've loved singing present perfect carolina so yes i do i've loved singing since i was little although i'm not a talented singer i sing lots of songs when i'm cooking because it makes me feel relaxed and happy very nice carolina i'm glad to hear it all right simran cover says yes i love to sing but to be honest i'm not a very talented singer if i have the opportunity i will definitely take some voice lessons simran good answer i made a few corrections check that out okay so just turning your responses into a more natural kind of higher level english all right okay twinkle shahoo says yes i just love singing different types of songs because it lightens my mood whenever i'm stressed very good reet whirring says i don't like to sing aloud because i think my voice is not that good but sometimes when i'm alone at home i sing a lot because there's no one to listen to me all right reid again answer explain example uh saying says yes definitely i usually sing in my spare time acting like i'm lady gaga on stage when i'm bathing but i know my sound is a disaster so i only sing when nobody's at home aha we have a lot of closet singers um yes i definitely love to sing even though i do not sound like a nightingale i'll have to check the spelling on that one nightingale is a song bird i sound more like a crow nevertheless it helps me to relax and also helps me to put my baby daughter to sleep at night when she is restless i would say i sing at least a couple of times each week last night i sang can't help falling in love by elvis presley to my daughter all right so there's my answer that's more or less the truth um there we go uh so uh repeat after me do you like to sing yes i definitely love to sing even though i do not sound like a nightingale i sound more like a crow nevertheless it helps me to relax and also helps me to put my baby daughter to sleep at night when she is restless i would say i sing at least a couple of times each week last night i sang can't help falling in love by elvis presley to my daughter and she seems to like that song and falls asleep all right so again notice there's an answer there explanation okay and an example and i'm using quantitative language so how often at least a couple of times uh each week okay that's what you want to do nightingale is a songbird it has a very nice song of course a crow the crow is that kind of black colored bird um which goes crack and does not really have a nice song so there what i'm doing are i'm giving metaphors in my speech to give clarity using visual language okay all right okay so let's keep going fantastic job everyone i can't get of course to everybody's comment but that doesn't mean you should stop keep going and make sure that you speak and say your response is nice and loud i will try to catch different students at different times okay so here's the next question how often uh do you sing so next question is how often do you sing give me a nice full sentence answer definitely use quantitative information here all right for dave says i sing twice a day first during my morning bath second during my children's bedtime however i'd like to sing more unfortunately i can i have to go to work and it will probably anger or frustrate my co-workers very good for dobbs nice answer okay um i like it it's good explanation nice and visual all right uh roshni kunte says well i frequently sing songs twice a week um which is my favorite uh tears don't fall since i know the lyrics as well as it makes me more enthusiastic to do my studies all right roshni very good uh violet says i'm not very good at singing so i only sing about twice a week but sometimes i sing most of the week if i just discover a new song and sometimes i just want to annoy my older sister with my singing all right violet interesting using singing to annoy others i think a lot of us do that at times very good maybe very good okay um all right vishal vengar lakar says a lot of times during the day in fact it's difficult to count the number of times that i sing as it sometimes happens spontaneously while i'm doing my chores vishal not involuntarily and voluntarily is okay native speaker would likely choose the word spontaneously spontaneous singing like in a musical right where we're just talking and suddenly we start singing about what we're doing and i'm teaching okay so uh yeah spontaneous singing all right yahara says i don't sing every day now but i used to do so when i was a child now i sing on the weekends when i'm alone and nobody's listening to me so just a few times maybe once or twice okay yahara still give numbers still quantify that for me okay you want to always work towards quantifying information we're practicing that today because i know that as all of you practice quantifying and giving numbers you will improve by at least half a band score okay all right so divas karki says i sing at least twice a day once in the early morning while i'm bathing and the second time is when my baby nephew is visiting uh which makes me really happy to watch him listen to my songs okay uh divas a couple of corrections there okay so as i had just mentioned uh i believe that i sing roughly three to four times each week when i'm putting my child to sleep or when i feel really positive and i'm doing dishes or cooking however it could be more than that because sometimes i just burst into song when i hear a good tune on the radio or tv all right so uh sharing some natural language with you here as well uh repeat after me how often do you sing as i had just mentioned i believe that i sing roughly three to four times each week when i'm putting my child to sleep or when i feel really positive and i'm doing the dishes or cooking however it could be more than that because sometimes i just burst into song when i hear a good tune on the radio or tv okay so that's your spontaneous singing you can burst into song all right uh when do you sing so if you mention that you like to sing during bath time or as i mentioned while i'm putting my baby to sleep don't just repeat that information but really try to elaborate okay give more details all right visualize the information always give more details when you feel like you've answered that question and they're just asking you the same uh idea over again think about more details all right nyaish iman says i usually love to sing whenever i get together with my friends on the weekends and sometimes uh for school parties last night i got together with friends and we sang what did you sing the ice okay give me some details stella says i love to sing and listen to music every day it's like oxygen for me i can't be without music it's cathart cathartic effect makes uh takes away my stress okay yeah that's good catharsis sure back john says i usually sing when i go to the store near by my house using my headphones and i think it's around 6 p.m in the evening like yesterday i sang a song named okay very good beck john so that's details so you're singing a song when you go to the store near your home and you're listening to music i do that too while listening to music and you believe it's roughly around 6 p.m in the evening fantastic it's nice details very visual you get high band scores for that nuen huang says to be honest i don't have a good voice to sing but i try to practice english by singing some simple and short songs twice a week as my teachers advised me i think two times a week is enough for me okay huang that's good um when do you sing during the week mondays and tuesdays on the weekend at 5 p.m 2 p.m what time do you study okay anatoly switlaccini says i often sing in the car because no one hears me there and i feel solitude um it happens at high speeds which is kind of dangerous okay anatoly so that's good when are you in your car usually like in the morning when you're going to work or in the evenings or whenever so if you can give me even more details be even more precise that's fantastic all right muhammad azad says most of the time i'm singing in my spare time with my sister in a nice garden opposite to my home called aryam specifically in the uh at around midnight because uh at this time there's no one there okay don't use you mohammed in your response all right abhishek says frankly i'm a hilarious singer but i sing whenever i feel good i also sing when i'm doing something which i enjoy like writing and sketching okay very nice right yeah so when can be a context when you're doing some activity it can also be a time and what you can do is you can put those two together so well to be specific i usually put my daughter to bed around 9 00 p.m so that's when i'm singing and and also i often do the dishes after dinner uh around 1 p.m so that's another time when others can catch me humming a tune all right so uh there's that more specific more detailed answer okay so remember here i'm kind of talking over and over again about um i like singing uh when i'm uh putting my daughter to bed or uh when i'm doing the dishes or cooking and so for this question i don't just simply say well i already said when i'm cooking and doing the dishes but i elaborate more okay the arts examiners love good elaboration for the answers so when students get into deeper thoughts they give more detailed information visual information using paraphrasing as well meaning different words for expressing the ideas then you will get higher band scores okay this will get you lexical resource marks this will get you grammatical marks that will also get you coherence marks okay all right so uh here we go follow with me when do you sing well to be specific i usually put my daughter to bed around 9 p.m so that's when i'm singing also i often do the dishes after dinner around 1 p.m so that's another time when others can catch me humming a tune humming a tune is a nice way to paraphrase singing okay all right here we go next question and you might hear both of these questions right after each other so there might not be a follow-up here you might actually hear kind of a double question this happens in the alts exam as well these double questions so who is your favorite singer and why do you like this person okay so the examiner might ask you just like that who is your favorite singer and can you tell me why you like this person okay all right lots of answers coming up beck john says my favorite singer is dimash kudai bergenov which is who is sorry good who is famous for his great voice in both kazakhstan and china in fact he's won three times the asian voice tournament which is held each year which is held annually okay very good beck john all right says i often sing when i'm alone or in my home doing something right that's for the previous okay all right favorite singer students means one person choose one person and explain about them it doesn't matter if you've never thought about it then just pick one michael jackson shakira whoever you like okay there are a lot of great singers out there for sure all right alex joseph says my favorite singer would be adele an australian singer whose voice is incomparable and amazing her music influences uh many people and is on a whole another level um besides singing uh she has done a lot of charity as well so i love her for her voice and generous personality okay very good all right let's see who else [Music] habib ceylon says i would like to ask you if i'm not interested in the topic of the question which the examiner asking me would it be a disadvantage for marking what method i should use habib it's a good question um students if you're not interested in the topic like singing pretend like you're interested this is not the avengers movie that you just went and paid a ticket to be entertained okay this is an exam to test your english and there's a good chance that there will be some questions that you might not find completely interesting or relevant however your goal is to get a high band score so you can go to university of your choice or to emigrate to a country it's a stepping stone okay remember that this is a step towards your goal it's not for you to be excited about it or interested or even knowledgeable about it so whatever the question is become interested make up information and show your english that's what you're there to do it's only 15 minutes of your life make it count okay make it count that's my answer habib all right uh samuel sadir vara says my favorite singer is definitely michael bublier because of his deep voice and his british accent it's great to listen to apart from his accent his songs like silent night remind me of the of happy times okay nice michael buble all right carolina says my favorite singer is adele not only because of her voice it's very unique and melodic but i also like the lyrics of her songs which are very romantic i listen to her songs at least once a day i'll have to listen to a little bit of a doll it sounds like a few of you are into this singer okay shiman my favorite singer is an is an english man by the name of alan walker because his voice is very enjoyable and he often gives an idea of peace in his songs and sends love to people around them very nice answers students this one it looks like a lot of you have in the bag which means that you are very clear on your answer all right anura don't get too philosophical careful just answer the question and move on that's of course the opposite of what i said too so some questions students might get really passionate about it might be very close to home it might be very personal and they get really excited about it again be careful don't get too excited about a question either don't be like ooh ooh i love michael jackson he's just he's the king of pop he's like the greatest singer of all time i mean if you listen to his songs anything from billie jean to bad i mean it's like it's crazy he's just out of this world and then his dance moves they're super fantastic um so yeah don't get nuts uh for the examiner either okay that's not good uh you want to find the happy middle ground so be interested in the questions be confident in your answers but always stay focused on your goal giving a good answer explanation example quantifying and getting a high band score okay that's your target that's what you want to do all right so um my favorite singer is shakira i just love the way that she mixes english and spanish and she has an amazing voice not only that but i think she is a very charismatic person and an excellent answer all right um so i probably listen to her songs once a month or so all right i just picked someone i have lots of favorite singers i don't think i have one particular singer who i like above all others so here i just picked shakira and i'm focusing on answer explain example who is your favorite singer why do you like this person my favorite singer is shakira i just love the way that she mixes english and spanish and she has an amazing voice not only that but i think she's a very charismatic person and an excellent dancer i probably listen to her song once a month uh shakira is she even singing spanish it might be portuguese if i'm not mistaken but anyway it works doesn't have to be the truth okay all right um next question where's the best place to sing here we go yes celine dion yahara absolutely a fantastic voice okay next question where is the best place to sing again doesn't have to be the truth just come up with one i'm sure uh in the shower is one of the most popular answers out there all right uh janil says well my favorite singer is and i love the arabic language he has both worked very deeply in every music album and writes his own lyrics for his songs all right gineal that's good for the previous one okay let's see some answers for this question roshni says hmm that's an interesting question in my mind the best place to sing are bars or any competitive stage since a contestant can earn money just by winning a competition or even to build a career so pubs are a good place all right roshni i like your answer it's true you can win money it could also be a great source of embarrassment but hey who cares just be confident put yourself out there all right lydia says well i believe that being in an auditorium is the best place to sing specifically designed with the right acoustical qualities for projecting the human voice without the use of electronic equipment it has a major impact on people especially those who have powerful vocals as well as singing affectionately and with sentiment very nice lydia yeah acoustics nice use of that word acoustics is of course the uh way that sound moves in a certain space okay so uh auditoriums concert halls are often designed with acoustics in mind absolutely opera houses yeah lots of acoustic acoustics goes into building these places okay let's see carolina says from my view the best place for singing is my flat because no matter if i'm singing like a crow i feel confident and enthusiastic i bet carolina that you sound much sweeter than a crow that's just me alright alex says well having a soundproof room will help people avoid annoying uh noises and it will not only help them obtain the exact observation of their voice but also give greater feedback for improving and fine tuning yeah recording studios have sound proof rooms yeah absolutely that don't bounce back sound nice answers i was just thinking something more simple but some of you are coming up with some really nice complex answers for this all right shivangi says for me the best place to sing is the bathroom or where i'm alone so nobody can interfere uh by the way i'm not a great singer okay yeah and we would have got that answer uh earlier shivangi so the bathroom yeah bathroom or the shower that's probably one of the most popular places where many songs are sang around the world billions of bathroom songs every day okay smith patel says the best place for me to sing is definitely my terrace as i can see the whole area from that specific place in addition to the cold evening breeze which makes my singing more soulful schmidt nicely done on the terrace why not let the world hear you victor vikinov says actually the best place is namangan region northern kasance because when you sing music there your voice will be wonderful it is not unreal i'm guessing that might be like some kind of a valley victor or a mountain range maybe where's the best place to sing i think the best place to project my vocals to the world is on top of a high hill or mountain so that the whole world can hear me in fact there is a great lookout on top of elizabeth hill and budapest and when i sing from there everyone in the city can hear me or so i like to imagine all right i'm just getting creative here for this question b there we go repeat after me where is the best place to sing i think the best place to project my vocals to the world is on top of a high hill or mountain so that the whole world can hear me in fact there is a great lookout on top of elizabeth hill in budapest and when i sing from there everyone in the city can hear or so i like to imagine all right confidence yeah i think singing by the way students and singing in english when you have some time is a great way to not only practice your english your intonation but also to build your confidence as well okay singing is a great way to build confidence all right everyone i will leave this last question for you to try on your own if you could learn to sing a song perfectly which one would you choose and why okay all right that's it for me for today students i really want you to practice this strategy answer explain example quantify get that high band score remember you can practice your speaking on our websites for free with other
