Homemade RIFLE RATED Armor for these troubled times

we will start our program immediately after the music sausages hey today we have a submission from a viewer who has his own channel his channel is called tech this out meow i don't know you fill in the comments here over at tech this out meow this guy has built some ballistic panels out of hdpe which is just melted milk carton material so the first one we're going to try out today is just the hdpe inside the melted melted milk jug material wrapped in fiberglass it's very light this could actually make in make a ballistic panel and be carried the second one gets a little bit heavier it's the hdpe wrapped in fiberglass but has a steel insert so offers more protection quite a bit more weight the third one quite a bit more weight hdpe a level of ceramic and a level of steel in the back also wrapped in fiberglass so we're going to give these all a try and see what the different uh you know their different strengths are we have all the way from a 22 caliber pistol 9 millimeter pistol 40 caliber 10 millimeter 45 caliber pistol and then we're gonna move up to a 556 rifle 6.5 creedmoor 308 rifle we have an sks to shoot a 762-39 i don't even know what else we have over there with all kinds of goodies okay first nine millimeter our 22 is not working batteries are dead okay what are you aiming at top left corner okay i'm ready okay 40 kel 40 caliber [Applause] okay 10 millimeter i'm ready 10 millimeter hollow point happened so this is the non-armored piece hdpe wrapped in fiberglass we hit it with a nine millimeter hard ball stopped at deadness tracks 40 caliber federal hst 180 grain stopped it dead in its tracks so hard ball hollow point done we shot it first with a 10 millimeter underwood extreme penetrator designed for you know bear hunting or whatever zips right out the back and doug has a hole in his t-shirt down there in the angry birds t-shirt which are now angrier because he took a 10 millimeter round to the gut so we backed it down a little bit and used a standard 10 millimeter 135 grain underwood hollow point it stopped it it landed right next to the underwood and even though the underwood some of you might say well it compromised that piece of hpve i think you can kind of you might be able to see in that little crack there that even if it was compromised it still stopped the hollow point so that tells me that a perfect piece of hdpe wrapped in fiberglass would have had no problem stopping that hollow point whatsoever and it did stop it right it did stop it yeah yeah so yeah you've only got we've only got one exit from a half inch away from it so you know that's yeah that says a lot right there you know so what we're going to do is we're going to forego the 22 caliber because we know what that's going to do we're also going to forgo the 45 because it's a slow fat round if this will stop nine millimeter and 40 even in hardball it's certainly going to stop a 45 caliber hard ball or hollow point so what's the point of that let's get to some rifle rounds and see what those will do we know that rifle rounds are going to zip right through this piece so we're going to move on to the armored ones that have ceramic and steel in them my off screen production assistant this uh hdp hdpe vc it's lined with a layer of uh of steel plate in there i think it's just mild steel or maybe stainless steel tastes like stainless okay so um yeah we're gonna try the armored ones and we're gonna start with the rifle rounds and see if we can build up no point in putting rifle rounds through this one because they're going to zip i know they'll go through everything you know you should know that yep all right but it did good it did really well it did 10 millimeter extreme penetrator oh good the the well is quieter than welding yeah okay upper left or so upper left quadrant hopefully okay i'm ready okay success success we found its threshold the 10 millimeter extreme penetrator stopped because it hit the very edge of that steel plate so it did not even make it into the plastic so that's the end of the pistol caliber test let's move on to rifles this one says made in china oh oh oh my cute little magazine everyone loves that man magazine with the one round in it that's california compliant um so we're gonna try a 762 by 39 out of an ak style rifle and see how uh see how it feels i don't think you got the magazine there and they're right look at that come on there you go let's give it a try i'm not even sure where this where this rifle uh prints i don't yeah yeah you've never shot that thing fired at once on the soft body armor video oh okay i'd like to point out the snazzy little east german uh polymer furniture on this isn't that cool it's so it's so dorky but i love it it was like super cheap too that's authentic stuff though yeah give it a try top center hopefully [Music] i think something went right on through look at that ak is not a super powerful round even though it portrayed it like that in hollywood but i'd prefer not to be shot with it no so it hit lower than i thought that doesn't really matter never shot that rifle we didn't sighted in so however it you can see it did kind of rock those little steel plates impacted here exited there you might have been able to see on the high speed but shot right through doug's angry birds t-shirt and into the dirt berm out back so the slower of the rifle rounds we have the weaker weakest of the rifle rounds we have made it right through this steel and hdpe so is it even worth going with it you want to try a 556 rounds yeah let's try a smaller caliber okay and then of course we've also got 308 and six five if you think those are gonna but those are let's try the five five six or two two three faster and pointier 556 is the british say 556 yes all right let's give it a try a high power weapon okay i'm ready did it stop it aka plunked right through ar-15 my prediction was it was going to zip right on through oh no it did not yeah that was that so ak wins baby it did best rifle in the world right the ar or the ak you mean punching yeah the ar this was a soft tip uh ammo so that might had something to do with it as a part as opposed to like military ball ammo but it hit in there and we can't really see yet but the steel plate did stop at some point did not exit the back i don't know how we could cut that apart to examine it to be honest you're gonna need a freaking i need a grinder or something so this tells us now that we can continue on with the test using 308 762 by 51 and also i've got 6.5 creedmoor out here with us so let's put a couple of those in here higher powered rounds faster rounds um you know pointy pointy distance rounds let's see let's see what they do okay three zed eight as our british friends might say three hot eight okay three oh eight whatever you're ready all right i'm gonna help you is your scope big enough dude okay i'm ready are you ready yikes i think that went through that happened all right 308 hit a little low like we predicted because it's a long range rifle and exited violently and took a lot of shards with it right into doug you can see a big gray uh mark on his t-shirt and then show that a little bit doug yeah let's let's look at all the holes in doug he's getting a lot of holes a lot more he has a lot of holes in it this is a fresh t-shirt when we started yeah so doug took a 10 millimeter round down here this was your 7 6 2 39 round this is your 308 round pay attention to this too as the round is exiting here it's bringing a lot of debris with it look at all that great yeah great jacketing you can see down here too some of that stuff that's flying through pieces of that steel plate probably pieces of the fiber hdpe it's all traveling through him yeah i see a lot of sparkly stuff on his shirt well he's just been at the klizob oh okay so this was our 10 millimeter 76239 and some of its shards and that is the 308 wow sorry dog we know that this thing uh a 7 6 2 39 round passed through it from an ak-47 an ar-15 did not pass through it with a soft point ammo but a 308 round with um that had a little bit of a hollow point that had a ballistic tip on it yeah that passed right through so we did find the threshold on this piece um no need to go with a 6'5 preedmore because that's going to zip right through we're going to move on to the most durable the up armored piece that has got a layer of ceramic layer of steel hdpe and is wrapped in kevlar sealed with what'd you call it fiberglass glue resin resin rosin as they say overseas i've made this boat from rosen and aluminium [Laughter] chip all right we love the british thing enough yeah we do there's quite a few british uh viewers yeah we we joke with them but we lost boys australians too ak with russian ammo all right i am ready here we go hard to tell what happened there so it definitely hit you could see in the camera in the in the slow-mo that ceramic went everywhere blew out the top you could probably see down in there it cracked all that ceramic like a dinner plate flew through the hdpe and hit that steel plate in the back it mostly penetrated the steel plate what we're trying to figure out though you can see the what we originally thought was an exit hole however i think it's an exit hole all of the little fibers are there so it's either an exit hole or that bullet is right underneath that skin but because this has been resined it's very very tough material and it's tough for us to get in there we can't really yeah it's it's it's really hard to tell yeah we went and looked at doug but the bullet holes are exact same spot as they were before so it's tough to tell if doug's got a new bullet hole or not so let's move it on up however we went to 7-6-2-39 let's move it over to a what do we do next uh the ar-15 yeah as well six see if it'll make it through we'll put that one right over here okay okay where are you aiming i'm gonna aim below that uh existing hole okay try to keep as much of the rest of it kind of intact yeah we'll try to keep it to that left quadrant there okay i'm ready okay i got [Music] [Applause] you 556 punched in there broke the um ceramic plowed through the hdpe hit the steel did not exit the back there's its little little tiny bulge right there okay just as i brought this thing forward to show jeff on camera this little tiny piece of very very hot uh round fell out the bottom so um i don't know if you'll be able to even see it on camera but that very back plate is bent but the round did not make it through the ceramic and hdpe were enough to slow it down to where it couldn't penetrate that uh little steel plate okay so 308 and six five creedmoor ah what do you think okay 308 again yep when you're ready i'm ready [Music] oh boy doug went to flying we kind of thought it made it all the way through because doug went flying and we saw ceramic everywhere it did obviously puncture the front it did go through the hdpe you could actually see the little ceramic tube that was there yeah the ceramic shattered all that however we found this steel plate on the ground this was down here at the bottom like this at the back so as it was flying through the steel plate actually caught it stopped the 308 round but the impact was enough to tear this heavy duty kevlar rosin but that plate was down in there and uh got punched out at such force uh toward that so oh my goodness that wouldn't want to be behind it but no no no no well let's give it a try since we know this piece at least will stop a 308 let's give it a try with a 6.5 creedmoor on is there any ceramic left in there there's ceramic over here okay mostly undamaged yes it's probably compromised but get over it and we've got another we got a pretty much intact steel plate here and over here and we'll put this guy back down in here upside down so hopefully that is a terrible test but what else can we do you had good tests on this channel what would you want you would have nothing to comment about yeah misspelled words what the trolls do [Laughter] all right let's try and put a 6'5 creedmoor over here i just mounted that scope on that rifle and i have never shot it once i don't even know where the damn bullet is going to go 6.5 creedmoor creedmoor with no e oh okay so i'm going to try and put it over in the right hand uh quadrant triangle the uh like three o'clock area yeah it it's so beat up at this point this isn't really a great test just for fun just to see what to do and give give him a chance to fire that gun for once let's see where it prints i'm hoping it's somewhere even on target yeah okay i'm ready all right three o'clock area oh oh poor doug's gun he's like a gymnastic today he's done more flips and nadia kaminichi is that right we don't need language like that on this show oh sorry so uh i tried to get it in here scope was a little off but i've never shot it before so 6'5 creedmoor down in here we had this big old giant exit and a lot of ceramic flying out the back so again just like the 308 we thought it made it all the way through but you remember the 308 plate caught that round yeah this thing fell out and i found this one in front of doug that six-five creedmoor round was actually kind of captured in here almost like a like a baseball glove yeah he used strips of steel instead of uh like a solid piece but i think it would have been better if he used a solid piece of steel but yeah so it's possible that this thing hit and squirted on past and ripped out the back there it's tough to tell but if there was one big giant plate of steel in there i don't think either one either the 308 or the 65 creedmoor would have made that through made it all the way through yeah maybe not even the ak or what you know yeah but poor doug and his angry birds t-shirt he's gonna have to take that back to hot topic and get his three dollars back anyway folks it's been an interesting test we wanted to see what these little what homemade armor would do that's always fun to test and uh you know these were fun to shoot they performed i guess better than we thought if you think about it i kind of expected the uh the 308 and the 6'5 creedmoor to zip right on through yeah and technically it stopped them so yeah handgun rounds it's good for most handgun rounds so we were pleasantly surprised doug was pleasantly
