here's a little fun fact about me i do not cook breakfast on trail i would much rather sleep in and eat something quick on the go than get out of my tent in the morning and cook breakfast and yet breakfast is my most favorite meal to enjoy off trail so today i'm going to share with you some cheap and easy backpacking meal breakfast ideas that are all under three dollars per serving and can be found at the grocery store spoiler alert only one of these options requires cooking but even then you could still cold soak this option if you wanted to skip the cooking altogether before we get hiker and the hungry hiker here on youtube looking for some cheap and easy food options for your next backpacking trip well guess what there are plenty of backpacking meal options available at your local grocery store in this video i'm going to focus on breakfast which is the most important meal of the day and i'll feature eight different options that are under three dollars per serving and can be found at any grocery store by the way i am not sponsored by any of the food brands mentioned in this video these are all personal food choices i've made myself based on my own experiences of backpacking and through hiking the pacific crest trail over the last few years let's go [Music] oatmeal is a food option a lot of hikers get sick of but it's incredibly cheap and versatile you can add pretty much anything to it to give it a different flavor profile another nice thing about oatmeal is that you can either cook it by boiling water or cold soak it in water overnight and then eat it the next morning cold i like to add peanut butter powder to my oatmeal to change up the consistency and enhance the taste i also like to throw in a few almonds to give it some crunch this combination of instant oatmeal peanut butter powder and almonds makes this option 2.19 per serving and 110 calories and it's surprisingly filling [Music] who doesn't love a bowl of cereal in the morning this option provides a great milk alternative that is super convenient to use on trail i like using a packet of breakfast essentials with a cup of water to make my on trail milk alternative then add a cup of your favorite cereal and enjoy no cooking required this option comes out to 1.25 per serving and 120 calories you can easily double this serving and still keep this option under three dollars and larry's the complete cookie is a vegan plant-based protein cookie with 16 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber the complete cookie is free from dairy egg soy high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners each cookie is 420 calories and is considered two servings making this 2.49 per two servings [Music] bagels even if they aren't toasted and croissants from the bakery are both super easy breakfast options to eat on the go they can also be squished in your food bag and still taste delicious each serving will cost between a dollar to a dollar thirty per croissant or bagel and be a total of 230 to 260 calories per serving bars are always a quick and easy breakfast and also make an excellent second breakfast option the nice thing about bars is that there are so many choices there's everything from the soft fruit-filled nutrigrain bars to crunchy kind bars granola bars and clif bars depending on the bar these can cost anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar seventy per bar which equals one serving and can be a total of 130 to 250 calories depending on the bar pop-tarts are another great quick easy and cheap breakfast option there are several different flavors to choose from i personally prefer the unfrosted strawberry flavor don't worry about not being able to toast them they are still delicious right out of the package and even if they get squished in your food bag these come out to be 87 cents per serving with a serving bean one package that has two pastries inside for a total of 370 calories per serving holy moly breakfast bars are the only option on this list that needs to be made ahead of time before heading out on trail they're super easy to make and all the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store [Music] this was what i had for breakfast every recipe each bar comes out to 2.50 per serving and a total of 406 calories per bar [Music] bobo's oat bars are gluten-free vegan and extremely filling they come in a few different flavors and can be found in the same aisle where the protein and granola bars are located each bar comes out to 2.99 per bar and each bar is considered two servings for a total of 360 calories per bar pro tip if you want to get in more calories in the morning introduce the second breakfast concept to your hiking meal plan start off the day with one of these breakfast options and in a couple hours when you stop
