hi i'm kathleen former pct through hiker avid pacific northwest stay hiker and the hungry hiker here on youtube recently i went to section hike part of the pacific crest chill here in washington for eight days i hiked 122 miles on section l along the pct leaving from the rainy pass trail head off of highway 20 and heading north towards the northern terminus at the canadian border once i reached the terminus i turned around and headed south on the pct heading back towards the rainy pass trail head if you haven't already be sure to check out the video series of my pct section l hike i get questions all the time about the gear i use on trail for those of you wanting to know all the details on the gear i brought with me and use on this trip this video is for you in this video i'm going to cover every single piece of gear i brought with me along my hike i'll break down each piece of gear by the system including my pack shelter system sleeping system clothes i hiked in packed clothing electronics cooking system water filtration system repair tool toiletry bag poop kit and my first aid kit in this video i will not be talking about the food i carry it on trail i'll be creating a whole separate video talking about the food i brought with me on this trip this video will only cover gear if there's a certain piece of gear or system you're interested check the description below for the links for all the gear i brought with me and mentioned in this video i also have a lighterpak.com account which has a complete list of all my gear and broken down by system and weight check the description below for the link to my gear list on lighterpack.com before we get started be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel and hit the bell icon to get notified any time i add a new video alright let's get started my pack it's what i carry all my gear in for this trip i used the osprey asia 48 and i loved it the asia 48 is considered one of osprey's more ultralight packs this pack is designed to carry up to 40 pounds in an effort to shed some weight and prevent over packing i removed the floating lid or what i like to call the pack spraying and instead use the built-in flap jacket to close my pack and protect all of my gear inside [Music] some features i love about this pack the front stretch mesh pocket which is where i stored my bug repellent rain gear including my osprey ultralight rain cover food kit and my trash dual access stretch mesh side pockets for easy external storage this is where i kept my tent poles and footprint on one side and my tool repair toiletry bag on the other with my gatorade bottle air speed suspension the tension back panel not only helps keep the weight of my pack off of my back but it's also a ventilation system making wearing this pack for a much more comfortable experience for super sweaty hikers like me my only hesitation with using the asia 48 at first was that there were no hip belt pockets where would i store my snacks phone headphones chapstick and anything else i wanted easy access to without having to take off my pack luckily i found a quick and simple solution a fanny pack i love my summit bum classic fanny pack by through pack and not because it's purple using a fanny pack has been a game changer for me on trail i can't imagine hiking without it it's where i carry my tripod camera phone headphones chapsticks sunglasses and anything else i need easy access to when i'm hiking and don't want to take off my pack total weight for my pack system is 2.74 pounds [Music] my shelter system of choice is the big agnes copper spur two person freestanding ultralight backpacking tent even though it's just me i do like having the extra room in a two-person tent versus trying to squeeze and confine myself into a one-person tent this tent is easy to set up spacious enough inside for me and all of my gear does a nice job of keeping me warm and protected from weather and other outdoor factors and is fairly light i use the matching footprint for my tent to help extend the life of my tent floor and give my inflatable sleeping pad a little bit more protection from what might be underneath my tent total weight for my shelter system is 3.38 pounds [Music] i made the big switch from using a sleeping bag to investing in a quilt the difference between a sleeping bag and a quilt is that a quilt does not close underneath you like a sleeping bag does quilts will typically have a closed foot box to keep the feet warm there are elastic straps and clips on each side of the quilt to help keep it attached to a sleeping pad and lock out drafts i have the enlightened equipment enigma custom down quilt my color of choice for my new quilt purple on the inside and purple on the outside cocoon camp inflatable pillow a pillow is a luxury item to some but it's essential to me if i can't get a good night's sleep on trail i won't be able to hike the next day and if i can't hike well that's a problem cocoon mummy silk sleeping liner sleeping liners can add up to an additional 10 degrees of warmth to your sleeping system which is great if you're a cold sleeper like me i use this waterproof dry sac to store my quilt liner pillow and down booties in and help keep all of these things dry at all times therm-a-rest neoair extherm inflatable sleeping pad this sleeping pad has an r-value of 6.9 the higher the r value the more insulated the pad for a cold sleeper like me this r value is music to my ears total weight for my sleeping system is 3.07 pounds when hiking in warm weather i prefer to wear shorts and a short sleeve shirt because i sweat so much when it's hot outside for this trip it was quite sunny and hot on most days my daily hiking outfit consisted of a pair of solomon scent shorts these are super lightweight dry fast and are extremely comfortable athleta foothill tee this is the same shirt i wore hiking on the pct at the end of my 2018 through hike i like this tee because it's made out of a wicking material that dries fairly quickly really nice for a sweater like me a sports bra i only brought and wore one underwear i only brought and wore one pair darn tough hiker quarter cushion socks i prefer a lower cut sock when wearing my trail runners with darn tough i never get blisters and you gotta love that lifetime guarantee choose mountain's trucker hat i love the wide brim on this hat because it helps keep the sun out of my eyes choose mountains is a local company and i love their mission which is to inspire people to choose mountains every day a buff this is a super important piece of gear when hiking during kova 19. it's also a great multi-use piece of gear i can use my buff as a mask a headband a snot rag and on a really hot day dunk it in cold water and put it around my neck and i have natural instant air conditioning on the back of my neck knock around premium sunglasses in black and smoke these are the best pair of 20 sunglasses i've ever had i buy them in multiples because i scratch them on trail give them to friends who might not have a pair of glasses lose them in the water sit on them or whatever else i do to sunglasses solomon odyssey triple crown magic trail runners full disclosure i'm a solomon hiking ambassador who receives clothing from salomon to try out throughout the year on trail i'm a firm believer in only using and promoting the gear i love i love these shoes they're comfortable they dry quick they have a wide toe box there's a sturdy protective toe tap there's super grippy traction on the bottom of the shoe and the colors are so much fun check out my video to see my full review on these shoes and why i love hiking in them so much black diamond alpine carbon cork trekking poles this is one piece of gear i used to poo-poo on now after having used them every day on both of my pct thru hikes i can't imagine hiking without them arterix norvan women's jacket this jacket is designed for trail running but works perfectly for hiking in the rain it's super light very waterproof and very expensive but for how dry and warm it's kept me on trail it's been worth every penny i thought about not bringing this jacket with me on my recent pct section hike because the weather had been so nice and there's plenty more sunshine in the forecast and no sign of rain but guess what the night of day two and the morning of day three it rained glad i packed my jacket patagonia r1 fleece i love that i can hike and sleep in this mid layer it's super warm and comfortable enough to wear as a layer underneath my rain jacket and or puffy my favorite feature is the zipper chest pocket which is great for carrying my wallet and chapstick while i'm in town and also great for carrying my sunglasses when on trail mountain hardwear ghost whisper down jacket or what i like to call my puffy again another pretty pricey piece of gear but necessary to have it camp when your body is cooling down from a warm day of hiking this puffy is super lightweight and can be slept in easily and comfortably on those really chilly nights and it packs down pretty small pro tip if you shop for last season's colors you can probably find this one for nearly half off the normal retail price smart wool merino 250 base layer top i use this to sleep in at night instead of sleeping in my wet and sweaty shirt that i hiked in all day glad i packed it hiking leggings i always pack a pair of leggings in case it's a cold day on trail or a cold night at camp or if i need an additional layer of bug protection i've had these leggings for years and got them online through victoria's secret several years ago they're the perfect amount of thickness to keep my legs warm when hiking in colder weather enlightened equipment sidekicks these are a luxury item i never knew i needed until i went winter camping at the beginning of this year and slept on snow these ultralight down booties only weigh two ounces and are stored with the rest of my sleeping system one pair of darn tough stalks these socks are slightly thicker and taller than my hiking socks two extra pairs of darn tough hiker quarter cushion socks i use each of these pairs of socks i brought with me on this trip outdoor research melody sensor liner gloves i always carry a pair of liner gloves with me on any hiking and backpacking trip because my hands do tend to get cold total weight for pack clothing is 3.45 pounds [Music] rav power battery pack charger and cord this has three usb ports which means i can charge my camera phone and garmin all at the same time pretty convenient canon g7x camera and cord this was either in my hand or in my fanny pack for quick and easy access on trail in addition to my camera i also brought four extra batteries manfrotto tripod i kept my tripod stored in my fanny pack since i used it on trail all the time garmin inreach and cord i wear my garmin inreach on the outside of my pack it's always on whenever i'm on trail hiking and it tracks my whereabouts every 10 minutes whenever i stop for a break lunch to filter water or set up camp for the evening i create a specific waypoint so friends and family at home can know what i'm doing i turn off the tracking once we get to camp for the evening black diamond storm headlamp with extra batteries illumination is one of the 10 essentials so i never hike without a headlamp iphone 7 in a lifeproof case with charging cord headphones and the gut hook app even though it was in airplane mode i used my phone primarily to pull up the gut hook app to check mileage and check waypoints and read the comments on upcoming tense sites and water sources total weight for electronics is three pounds point five one brs 3000t ultralight titanium backcountry stove i decided to shed some weight and made the switch to a smaller and lighter stove not only was the stove cheap coming in at 15 but it also boils water just as fast as a jetboil snow peak trek 900 titanium cook set what i like about this pot besides it being lightweight is that it fits a medium sized fuel canister perfectly making storing my cooking system in my pack so much easier the lid can also be used as a mini frying pan diy stove koozie perfect for rehydrating all of the diy dehydrated meals i made at home and brought with me on trail i'll include a link below to a video made by a fellow backpacker who walks you through how to make one of these yourself it's super easy 3 liter osprey ultralight bag this is what i use to store my cooking system in minus my long-handled spoon for those of you who already watched my pct section hike videos you'll remember the spoon drama i had on trail somewhere on day two i lost my spoon and didn't realize it until day three i never did find the spoon anyone who has spent a significant time hiking a long distance trail knows that the trail provides and by day four the trail provided me with a new spoon thanks to a fellow hiker heading in the opposite direction now instead of a long spoon i have a bright green spoon slash sport combination to add to my cooking system one 8.11 ounce fuel canister or as i like to call the medium-sized one rei multi-towel light in size small i use this to grab my pot when it's hot and to clean out my pot after i'm done eating two big lighters total weight for my cooking system is 1.42 pounds i carry the 3 liter osprey hydration reservoir i like how it carries a fair amount of water fits easily in my pack along my spine and it makes drinking water and trails so easy and convenient with my sawyer fast fill hydration pack adapter kit that's hooked up to the hose of my hydration reservoir i can easily add in filtered water to my reservoir without having to take everything out of my pack my water filter of choice is the sawyer squeeze water filter it filters out a fair amount of water with a sturdy stream and filters two liters of water fairly quickly i used the knock outdoors two liter vecto bag for capturing dirty water to filter i love the wide opening at the top of the bag which allows for a quick and easy gathering of water the opposite end of the bag is compatible with my sawyer squeeze allowing me to screw on my water filter and push the dirty water through the filter by applying light pressure to the vecto bag i always carry a reusable gatorade bottle and trail for whenever i want to make a batch of blue powdered gatorade my electrolytes of choice went out on trail total weight for my water filtration system is 1.09 pounds [Music] this bag is a catch-all for any repair tools or toiletries i might need on trail during the day i carry my battery pack charger charging cords and headlamp in a 3 liter osprey ultralite bag along with the following other items 2 packs of hand warmers which i didn't use on this trip repair kit for a sleeping pad thank goodness i didn't have to use that on this trip toothbrush and toothpaste definitely use that on this trip sunscreen chapstick baby wipes two zip ties which i didn't use on this trip my swiss army knife which i always use to slice my cheese outdoor research bug bucket hat which i actually didn't use on this trip and bin's 100 max formula tick and insect repellent total weight of my repair tool toiletry bag is one pound [Music] pretty self-explanatory this is the kit i use for whenever mother nature calls on trail my poop kit is kept in a ziploc bag and is stored in the front stretch mesh pocket of my pack and contains the deuce trowel baby wipes a pixie cup which i ended up needing to use on day six hand sanitizer and doggie bags and extra ziploc bags to pack out the baby wipes total weight for my poop kit is .79 pounds this is the one piece of gear i hope i never have to use on trail but if i do it contains things like blister repair medications for common ailments leukotape body glide for chafing bandages in a variety of sizes and a lightweight ankle brace since i'm prone to spraining my ankle on trail total weight of my first aid kit is 1.2 pounds [Applause] my total base weight for this trip was 21.63 pounds my base weight does not include the clothes and shoes that i wore my trekking poles or my food bag got questions about any of the gear i mentioned in this video post your question in the comments below if you enjoyed this video and found it useful make sure to hit that thumbs
