[Music] i [Music] is the thanksgiving sacrifice i make i will call on the lord's name [Music] is [Music] is a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters i received from the lord what i also handed on to you that the lord jesus on the night he was handed over took bread and after he had given thanks broke it and said this is my body that is for you do this in remembrance of me in the same way also the cup after supper saying this cup is the new covenant in my blood do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup you proclaim the death of the lord until he comes the word of the lord jesus christ [Music] is [Music] give you [Music] yes [Music] grace to your lord jesus christ a reading from the holy gospel according to john before the feast of passover jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the father he loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end the devil had already induced judas son of simon the iscariot to hand him over so during supper fully aware that the father had put everything into his power and that he had come from god and was returning to god he rose from supper and took off his outer garments he took a towel and tied it around his waist then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and dry them with the towel around his waist he came to simon peter who said to him master are you going to wash my feet jesus answered and said to him what i am doing you do not understand now but you will understand later peter said to him you will never wash my feet jesus answered him unless i wash you you'll have no inheritance with me simon peter said to him master then not only my feet but my hands and head as well jesus said to him whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed for he is clean all over so you are clean but not all for he knew who would betray him for this reason he said not all of you are clean so when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again he said to them do you realize what i have done for you you call me teacher and master and rightfully so for so indeed i am if i therefore the master and teacher have washed your feet you ought to wash one another's feet i have given you a model to follow so that as i have done for you you should also do the gospel of the lord we are happy to be together tonight to be together to be with the lord to begin this important time of the passion the suffering and the death and the resurrection of jesus so i invite you not only you who are present in this church but all of us who are following this celebration all over the world to become aware that we are with him and we will accompany him we heard in the gospel today a few observations made by jesus to his disciples to peter and the others do you understand i will explain you but please try to understand we know that we do not always understand our own life what's going on in our world but maybe we do not even understand why the lord is calling us to live with him in our concrete situations and to accompany him we know that he will give us the understanding we need if we listen so before the feast of passover jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the father he loved his own and in the world and he loved them to the end now these the words of the gospel has to have to be understood and listened to he loved them to the end although judas and others plotted to kill him you know that it is not just the ideal situations immediately we are situated in the real world he loved them to the end and yet judas a disciple and others plotted to kill him is that not an image of our world and jesus knowing their intentions still loved them to the end still in spite of that on this evening we remember the gifts of his love the priesthood the holy eucharist which he instituted at the last supper of the eucharist sacrifice we remember a few words from saint john paul ii i quote the sacrifice this sacrifice is so decisive for the salvation of the human race that jesus christ offered it and returned to the father only only after he had left us a means of sharing in it as if we had been present there at times you know we forget about the eucharist we don't pay attention to it what could jesus have done for us more truly in the eucharist he shows us a love which goes to the end a love which knows no measure the lord desires to give himself to his people that they may share in his life this is what the eucharist is all about what motivated christ to do this love the eucharist is rightly called the sacraments of charity no one has ever decided anything more than god desires to share his life with us it was god's love for us that inspired his plan to save us through the birth the death and the resurrection of his son it was god's love that motivated the sending of the holy spirit to sanctify us we were created so that god could share his life with us we share his in his life in and through the priesthood of christ christ instituted the priesthood on the same night that he instituted the eucharist commanding his disciples to do this in memory of me he not only gave his apostles the command but he also left them a precious example of priestly service he loved his own to the in the world and he loved them to the end let's repeat this beautiful sentence he washed the feet of his disciples knowing their weakness and knowing that judas would betray him imagine jesus washed the feet of judas jesus washed their feet first offering them an example of how they were to act and then teaching them more specifically what they were to do he gave them an example of both humility and charity in washing their feet and encouraged them by his teaching if then i being your lord and master have washed your feet you also ought to wash one other's feet for i have given you an example that i have done you to you so that you also should do this very these are very straightforward words they don't need any explanation this is what we're supposed to do for the rest of our life why does jesus wash his disciples feet one obvious answer is that he wants to teach them that they are to serve their brothers and sisters but there is more to this act than a simple teaching he wants to give them the example of humility he who was their lord and god stripped himself of glory and washed their feet becoming a slave for them this is the meaning of the whole life and the passion of jesus he bends down to our to our dirty feet the dirt of humanity and washed us clean in his greater love historically the slave would wash his master's feet so that the master would be suitable prepared to sit at the table for a meal with his guests jesus christ prepares us for god's presence and for one another's company so that we can together partake of his body and blood and he does this for us who can scarcely stand one another at times look at the reality of our families of our communities of our country of our world for us who are unfit to be with god for us who are so weak in our faith through his service we are prepared to be with god this is a kind of reconciliation so simple so powerful we are able to have access to god if we are willing to yield to god's love do you love me do you love me he who was their master and teacher washed their feet in the savior we see what the ministers of christ should do and we are all ministers of christ here we understand that one uses authority for service whatever kind of authority we have in the church in the family in the city in the government it's for service in judas we learn that there are those who profess christ with their lips who partake of his precious food who allow him to wash their feet but who interiorly conspire against him loving the world more than christ it's a dramatic moment isn't it but the drama is not just on the day of the last supper the drama we live it ourselves every day at every moment in the other apostles we see those who although fragile and weak like ourselves present their their affections to christ to be washed and purified desiring truly to have a portion of his life they begin to understand you will understand take your time but you will they would stumble they will fall like ourselves but they already truly loved him do you love me christ offers an example not only to the clergy of course to us the priest but to all of us for he got up from the table took off his outer garments before tying your towel around his waist to wash his disciples feet we too must rise and take off our outer garments that is the old man or the old woman those lifestyles marked by sinfulness and put on the new transformed by the grace of conversion we rise for from mere knowledge of christ teaching to action from meal to labor from letter to spirit those impediments to virtue must be put aside in favor of the white garment symbolic of a life of integrity so that we may be witnesses to christ's love as his disciples each of us here is a disciple that's a vocation disciple because we accept god's love we are loved so much by him that he willingly allowed himself to be handed over for us this evening we are invited to respond to his love to commit ourselves to deepening our friendship with the lord jesus and with all those whom he loves indeed we as catholics called to share in the divine life are called also to model this sacrificial love with gratitude for the love the lord has shown us we offer ourselves in love for others the gift of the holy eucharist which we receive came at a price he gave he gave up his body and blood for us the eucharist is a living reminder that christ lived and lives for others and has this his disciples we should do the same i conclude with a few words which i find very beautiful from a cardinal rainer cantalamesa you know this you know him he's the preacher of the pope during the time of lent every week he invited the holy father and his collaborator to listen his sermons and you can find it very easily on the social media they are beautiful so it's just a little bit it's a about the eucharist our sanctification with the washing of the food feed it's as if jesus where summarizing the meaning of his life to impress it on the disciples minds so that when the time came for them to understand they would do so it's interesting when the time comes to understand then they will understand at times we take it takes time but we need to be patient like jesus placed as the conclusion of the gospels this action tells us that the whole of the life of jesus from beginning to end was a washing of feet and that is to say a service to humanity it was a pre-existence or a life lived for others inspired by the wondrous love of the redeemer may we be granted the grace to live our life for others amen uh our lord fulfilled the new commandment of love by laying down his life for our salvation confident in his goodness we now offer our needs and those of the whole world for our holy father pope francis all bishops and priests that through the grace of their ordination they will be encouraged in faithful service to god's people let us pray to the lord [Music] that leaders of nations will work
