in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit peace be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what I have done and what I have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God may Almighty God have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray may your people exalt forever O God in renewed youthfulness of spirit so that rejoicing now in the restored glory of our adoption we may look forward in confident hope to the rejoicing of the Day of Resurrection through our Lord Jesus Christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever a reading from the Acts of the Apostles then Peter stood up with the eleven raised his voice and proclaimed you who are Jews indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem let this be known to you and listen to my words you who are Israelites hear these words Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds wonders and signs which God worked through him in your midst as you yourselves know this man delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God you killed using lawless men to crucify him but God raised him up releasing him from the throes of death because it was impossible for him to be held by it for David says of him I saw the Lord ever before me with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exalted my flesh to will dwell in hope because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld nor will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption you have made known to me the paths of life you will fill me with joy in your presence my brothers one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried and his tomb is in our midst to this day but since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption God raised this Jesus of of this we are all witnesses exalted at the right hand of God he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the father and poured forth him as you see and hear the word of the Lord [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] a reading from the first letter of Saint Peter beloved if you invoke as father him who judges impartially according to each one's works conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning realizing that you were ransomed from futile conduct handed on by our ancestors not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb he was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you who through him believed in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory so that your faith and hope are in God the word of the Lord thanks be to God [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke that very day the first day of the week two of Jesus disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred and it happened that while they were conversing and debating Jesus himself junior and walked with them but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him he asked them what are you discussing as you walk along they stopped looking down cast one of them named Cleopas as said to him in reply are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of these things that have taken place in these days and he replied to them what sort of things they said to him the things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him but we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel and besides all this it is now the third day since this took place some women from our group however have astounded us they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described but him they did not see and he said to them oh how foolish you are how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory then beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them were referred to him in all the scriptures as they approached the village to which they were going he gave the impression that he was going on farther but they urged him stay with us for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over so he went in to stay with them and it happened that while he was at table he took bread said the blessing broke it and gave it to them with that their eyes were opened and they recognized him but he vanished from their sight then they said to each other we're not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us so they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying the Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread the gospel of the Lord together with Monsignor Rossi and the staff of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception I want to greet all of you all of you who are joining us electronically for this celebration of the third Sunday of Easter for the past weeks the church has been over and over again recounting for us the glorious news jesus is risen from the dead and we are also reminded that we are not bystanders to this overwhelming reality that Christ is risen Christ is truly risen you and I all of us were invited into this magnificent mystery we're expected to become participants in a whole new way of living the gospel today is the familiar story of the disciples who set out on a journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus and it can be for us a parable a parable of our own life's journey and all the elements that should be a part of our encountering on that journey the risen Lord st. Luke's Gospel recounts that the two disciples were on a journey they were making their way is that not true of all of us each of us each of us is making our life's journey there are many many journeys in the course of that over riding journey journeys that take us to work journeys that take to friends journeys we can't take these days because of the virus but each of us each of us is making our life's journey and we make it through good times and bad times difficult times and in varying situations but the ultimate goal for you and for me the ultimate goal for all of us of the journey is heaven it says that the two disciples as they walked along or distressed they were downcast because of the bad news they were dealing with some very very troubling issues the very fact that this wondrous basilica is empty and that we're connecting electronically reminds us that we all live in troubled times these are particularly troubling the issues impact us in a way that reflects how difficult life can be that into every life there comes some sorrow loss disappointment this pandemic has said to all of us into life there also comes suffering separation isolation even death all of this is a part of life's journey the bigger journey that you and I are making but as the gospel unfolds what do we find in the midst of all this troubling upset Jesus approaches these people making the journey Jesus enters in to their life he enters in as one who wants to make the journey with them it's important to note that in the conversation it's Jesus who initiates this discussion they're bewildered lost and he begins to explain to them his word begins to open their hearts to the true meaning of all the things going on around them how how does this happen it happens because the disciples were open to this word of God Jesus Jesus begins to explain to them this is what it means but it says they were open to it each of us we read we listen to the Word of God mass begins the first part of Mass with the word of God being announced to you and to me and in this experience we encounter we encounter God we begin to become aware of God's love for us we begin to understand the meaning of those words we learn of Jesus and his love for us of his death his resurrection and our new life it falls to all of us to respond to that word it's one thing to hear it it's another thing to let it form us and that's what happened to those disciples their hearts were burning it says when when they heard Jesus explaining these words and so it is for us we listen to that word of God and then then we hear in that word Jesus and we we respond by inviting him into our lives into the rest of the journey stay with us so that we can draw closer to you and isn't that what happens when you and I come to Mass it says they invited Jesus into their home into their lives and in the breaking of the bread they realized who he is that he's risen and he's with them isn't that what this celebration is all about granted today we're doing this electronically but isn't the whole idea of listening to God's Word accepting the invitation and coming to mass so that in the breaking of the bread we can encounter him really and truly that's why we say Amen when when the host is presented to us and we hear the body of Christ my brothers and sisters what we celebrate what we celebrate is the reality of the risen Christ in our lives and his invitation his invitation to let him come in and fill us but there's even more once once they heard his word once they understood what the scripture said once they met him encountered him Rick recognized him in the breaking of the bread what did they do they immediately went to tell the others my brothers and sisters this gospel narrative is meant for you and for me it's a parable of our lives since we're truly disciples of the Lord since we're committed to experiencing his life and eventually arriving at our goal we simply understand what it means to say Christ is risen Christ is truly risen and we're his witnesses in all that we do we bear witness to that extraordinary and wondrous message and so as the church today lifts up for us one more time the image of the risen Lord this time it's the Lord who walks with us in our life's journey let us always be attentive to his word that has always opened our heart to his presence and may others see in the way we live our witness to the testimony Christ is risen Christ is truly risen and let us now profess our faith I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true God from True God begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the Dead and the life of the world to come and let us now turn to God in prayer and trust that he will hear our petitions for those who serve as missionaries but their dedication to the gospel will witness to the light and love of Christ and foster hope in the hearts of God's people let us pray to the Lord that leaders of business and government may be advocates for all those who lack the basic necessities of food shelter and clothing let us pray to the Lord for all those affected with the coronavirus and for those who care for them that God will heal the sick and strengthen them in this time of great trial let us pray to the Lord Lord that our prayers will encourage many to be open to God's call to serve the church and vocations to the priesthood diaconate and religious life let us pray to the Lord for the intentions entrusted to the national shrines prayer guild novena and for all the intentions we hold in our hearts let us pray to the Lord that all who have died from the effects of the coronavirus may now have eternal life in the glory of God's heavenly kingdom let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer let us now recite together the prayer to our lady health of the sick Oh Mary you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of Hope we entrust ourselves to you health of the sick who at the cross took part in Jesus's pain keeping your faith firm you salvation of the Roman people know what we need and we are sure you will provide so that as in Cana of Galilee we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of fire help us mother of divine love to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us through the cross to the joy of the resurrection amen under your protection we seek refuge Holy Mother of God do not disdain our entreaties of we who are in trial but deliver us from every danger Oh glorious and Blessed Virgin [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] and pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty thought receive O Lord we pray these offerings of your exultant Church and as you have given her cause for such great gladness grant also that the gifts we bring may be our fruit in perpetual happiness through Christ our Lord the Lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you O Lord but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for he is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world by dying he has destroyed our death and by rising restored our life therefore overcome with Paschal joy every land every people exalts in your praise and even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] you are indeed holy O Lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our Lord Jesus Christ by the power and working of the Holy Spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the Sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore O Lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our Lord Jesus Christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore O Lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in Thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body one spirit in Christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God with blessed Joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the Saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray O Lord advance the the Holy Spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy
