return with all your heart faithful in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit we begin this season of lent an opportunity for us to be challenged by the very temptations that are part of human life that jesus faces so let us be attentive to the word of god today with an open heart to have conversion in our own lives about how we go forward in the future and ask forgiveness of our sins you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you plead for us at the right hand of the father lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us all of our sins and bring us to life everlasting amen let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observance of this holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priests shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord our god our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand in outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord i am [Music] you would [Music] i me [Music] [Applause] approach foreign your ways [Music] true a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for you if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord r [Music] is [Music] that comes from the mouth of god [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during these days and when they were over he was hungry so the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself from here for it is written he will command the angels concerning concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said in reply it is also written you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord we hear in the first reading today that the people of israel are thrown into crisis they've left the comforts of egypt even though they lived in slavery and now find themselves in a desert they don't like the food they're afraid of the future they have no home or shelter and they don't believe in their leaders anymore with regard to the direction they're taking it's a crisis for them a crisis that like the word itself means they need to take a decision and moses helps them take that decision by reminding them who they are that they were a people saved by god's hand who led them through the sea who conquered those who were oppressors it is in that memory that they can have hope for the future jesus too is in a moment of crisis as he sent into the desert by the spirit it's the same christ as decision making that each one of us face about how we view our use of power how we pursue possessions in life and the value that we give to prestige in our ego building jesus is first tempted to use his power to turn a stone into bread to feed himself and what jesus does is gives an example of how we should use power or view our power from the night before he died he did not take stone and turn it into bread but he took bread and turned it into his body to nourish others that's the example for us of how we use our power to nourish others defeat others and then he's tempted by the lie that all the possessions of the world had been given over to satan it is a lie because jesus tells us elsewhere in the scriptures that everything has been given over to him and he gives everything over to us it's when we believe that we're going to come up short in life that god is stingy with his gifts or maybe even that the devil holds all power in the world that we begin then to grab after things in this world the possessions in order to save ourselves it is that example of that young boy the multiplication of the loaves and fishes who comes forward with his few loaves and fishes that allows jesus to multiply it it's important for us as well to see that the gifts that we have are not just to enhance our lives but rather they're to be shared with one another and finally jesus is brought to the parapet of the temple and told to throw himself down and the real temptation is for jesus to think that he can stun people into paying attention to him after all if angels come and rescue you who can doubt that he is the son of god but jesus doesn't give in to that temptation because he believes that the greatest thing about him is not the reputation he has by stunning people into belief but the greatest thing about him is that god loves him a message that he heard at his baptism you are my beloved son in whom i'm well pleased and so too with us we should not pursue building our ego and our reputation at the expense of everything else if it in fact ends up having us have spiritual amnesia about how much god loves us each time we come to the eucharist jesus tells us do this in memory of me do everything that we hear in the gospel to have the kind of power that gives our lives away as jesus did for us and the cross to see the possessions we have as something that's given by god and he will never disappointment disappoint us and that the greatest thing about our lives is as the eucharist reminds us god loves us so much that he gave us his only son that's what this season of lent is about it's about remembering and that's why it's so important for us to come back to mass to celebrate the eucharist where jesus says do all of this in memory of me so that we don't have spiritual amnesia when it comes to how we view our power possessions or prestige we do all of this in order to remember who we are i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting today instead of the general intercessions we're going to use the prayer of peace authored by pope francis hoping that peace will reign once again in our world lord god of peace hear our prayer we have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms how many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced how much blood has been shed how many lives have been shattered how many hopes have been buried but our efforts have been in vain now lord come to our aid grant us peace teach us peace guide our steps in the way of peace open our heart our eyes and our hearts and give us the courage to say never again war with war everything is lost and still in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace lord god of abraham god of the prophets god of love you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother and sister make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace our tribulation into confident trust and our quarreling into forgiveness keep alive within us the flame of hope so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation in this way may peace triumph at last and may the words division hatred and war be banished from the heart of every man and woman lord diffuse the violence of our tongues and our hands renew our hearts and minds so that the word which always brings us together will be brother and sister and our way of life will always be that of shalom peace salam amen [Music] pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to god the father almighty [Applause] give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food jesus consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worldly the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Applause] [Music] even [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is a chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] lord therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me your unworthy sermon all the clergy and all your people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] we pray as jesus taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other a sign of peace and pray for peace in our world lamb of god take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away this into the world have mercy on us lamb of god take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy you things a desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot receive you sacramentally come spiritually into my heart i embrace you deny myself holy to you never allow me to be separated from you amen let us pray renew now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope is increased in charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live for by every word which proceeds through your mouth through christ our lord amen as i mentioned in the homily it is by remembering remembering that we come out of our crisis and today it's an opportunity for us to remember who we are as a democratic society and join especially with the people of ukraine the archdiocese and the catholic church in the united states is doing that by that we be generous to that you will see now across the screen here today a website of artschicago.org ukraine in order to make your gift or you can send it to your parish or to the archdiocese through the mail in order for that to be added to the collection we asked everyone to be generous also at the end of mass we're going to join with people in berlin who gathered at the brandenburn gate the famous brandon brigade in berlin to sing in latin dona nobus pachim give us peace i hope that you will sing along with that and allow your voice and your heart to be raised in solidarity with the
