[Music] i invite you to stand when he calls on me i will answer him i will deliver him and give him glory i will grant him length of days psalm 91 verses 15 and 16. in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you as we begin to celebrate these this first sunday of lent you know we just had ash wednesday just a couple days ago and we have the opportunity to enter into the enter into the wilderness with the lord and i don't know how the last four days of your life have been since last wednesday but one of the great reminders we have right at the beginning is however those last four days have been every day is a new beginning that that scripture says that god's mercies are new every single morning and so again if you maybe had a good ash wednesday maybe a horror blast wednesday or the last days between ash wednesday and now this sunday have been horrible god's mercies are new every morning and so this morning we call upon the lord and we ask him to not only have give us new mercy but also to make us new by his mercy and so we pray lord jesus you came to call sinners lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to seek and to save the lost christ have mercy christ have mercy you live to intercede for us at the right hand of the father lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct to pursue their effects we ask this through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen invite you to be seated as we hear from god's word a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] you dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and my fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] upon their hands they shall bear you up unless you dash your foot against the stone you shall tread upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am in trouble because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory chapter 4 verses 1-13 filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to be this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then satan took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord jesus christ so last week we talked about uh last words and but not last we talk about words and um and how words disclose like words reveal what's in our hearts and so i've been thinking about this you know i mentioned it last week last sunday that what we're gonna do for the next seven masses together so starting this first sunday of lent and ending on uh holy thursday is we're gonna be looking at last words and it just it's so interesting because you know as words disclose our heart um there's something about last words that are really unique they're really special um i think a lot of times our last words are the ones that are remembered uh so and you have last words that are powerful so i think every american kid knows about nathan hale nathan hale was only 21 years old and on september 22nd uh 1776 when he uh was part of the revolution and he died for his country and as he was being killed before he was hung he said this 21 years old he said i only regret is that i have one life to lose for my country then one of those like dramatic powerful last words another cicero who's you know roman senator back in like 43 bc at one point he was being assassinated and he had this like this boldness as he's being assassinated and he said to his assassin there is nothing proper about what you are doing soldier but do and try to kill me do try to kill me properly it's like that sense nothing proper what you're doing but dude try and kill me properly um you also have william wallace from braveheart was one word i really i love the movie it goes it throws back i know it's fiction based off a true story but pretty fictionalized that word freedom just he cries out as he's dying and it just is emblazoned in every man my ages uh heart in their mind because that last word sums up everything that those three men cicero nathan hale and william wallace were passionate about what's in their hearts or sometimes last words are funny uh there's a woman her name is she her name is dominique borjos she was a french grammarian very interested in words and at one point her last words were um i'm about to or i am going to die either expression is used i just think that's the last thing she said it's just very proper um another frenchman uh uh marie antoinette uh the french queen as she was being led to the guillotine she stepped on the uh the executioner's foot and her last words were predone mom was here and they should basically pardon me mr she said i didn't mean to step on your foot um which is basically french for op in minnesota wisconsin like if you get in someone's way like oh you know you get you they run into you just oop basically the same thing as marie antoinette pardon poor name um my siblings and i loved this movie back in the day starring val kilmer and valkimer said this he said in the immortal words of socrates i drank what which i thought was hilarious because socrates he died because he drank hemlock poison and he didn't really say that but bill kilmer said that he said that and i loved it um the last uh kind of somewhat funny is karl marx um his housekeeper came into his his bedroom as he was dying and asked for his last words like for posterity and he yelled at her and chased her out and he said last words are for fools who believe that they have not yet said enough um which is just adds to the list of the many things that i disagree with karl marx about because i believe that last words are incredibly important why because they reveal what's in our hearts at the extreme they reveal what's in our hearts about what we know is our last moment and that's crazy thing is obviously sometimes we don't get the chance we don't know we didn't know this was going to be a last moment and so sometimes those last words aren't uttered or sometimes the last words aren't there because we didn't realize this was my chance to say the last thing i could to this world or even the last thing to say to the people who mean the most you know i know a lot of us have people we've lost and we lost that chance to say those last words to each other again because we didn't know we didn't know this was the end a lot of cases those words were there but we didn't realize that um this was the one opportunity we had to say them because sometimes people say their words for posterity other times people have their last words and they say them to someone that their last words are not for the general public their words are for someone in particular so um at one point percy granger he was an australian composer and as he was dying he turned to his his wife ella and he said you're the only one that i like i thought that was great michael landon michael landon was little housekeeping his paw in the house on the prairie um also uh a highway to heaven is he was an angel he was like he was a deep man of christian faith and at one point as he was dying he was surrounded by his family and his his son said to him dad you can go now it's okay and michael landon looked into me said you're right it's time i love you all sarah the conan doyle you know who wrote the sherlock holmes stories he was in his garden behind his home with his wife and he just turned to her and he simply said you are wonderful and then he put his hand over his heart and died i like there's a man named oh mcintyre he was a he was a reporter he was only 53 when he died but as he was dying he turned to his wife maybelle and he said he all their snooks and he said snooks will you please turn this way i like to look at your face like these words as these people are dying a couple last ones um john wayne um he died at 72 years old and he turned to his wife she had asked him john you you know who i am you know and he looked at her and he said of course i know who you are you're my girl i love you to these moments these these this extreme moment the words that we say these last words that we say they capture or they can capture what's in the depths of our hearts even if we don't even know that they're coming like so humphrey bogart uh that he would he was married to lauren mccall and he didn't know he was gonna die but she was going she left the house to pick up their kids and his parting words his last words to her was uh goodbye kid hurry back and he didn't he didn't know she didn't know that those were her his last words now they still mean something right why because um they weren't words given for posterity's sake they were words that were spoken to someone for a reason and they reveal something um our hope of course is that our last words don't contradict our lives our hope is that our lack last words actually confirm the things that we've said earlier on in our lives could be why because our last words often just expose our deepest concern and so what we're doing again these next seven weeks or seven masses that we're gonna be together is we're gonna look at the seven last words of jesus particularly on the cross jesus uttered seven phrases he said what are typically historically called traditionally called the seven last words of jesus and today we start with his first words actually in the gospel we actually start with jesus's first words of his public ministry because if we're i think we're if we're going to understand jesus's last words we first have to understand his first words so what happens in the gospel today luke's gospel it says after jesus was baptized in the jordan he was led by the holy spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by satan and get we ask the question what's he doing in the wilderness well he's fasting and he's praying and he's being tempted but why what is he doing in the wilderness what he's doing in the wilderness is he's fighting he's in battle this is absolutely critical for us to understand what jesus is doing in the wilderness is he is fighting why how do we know this because when jesus was baptized in the jordan what happened the holy spirit came upon him in the form of a dove he was anointed right in that moment god the father says you're my beloved son with whom i'm well pleased and jesus is anointed now that anointing doesn't just mean that he's approved of doesn't just mean he has the holy spirit because he's god himself that throughout scripture the one who gets anointed is a king so king saul was anointed the king david was anointed the king jesus was anointed a king and so immediately after being anointed a king what does he go to do he goes out to fast and to pray and be tempted what is he doing he's fighting for his people this is what a king does now sometimes we think of kings these days and we think well fingers the king is someone who sits on their throne has their scepter leads eats olives or not olives eats grapes the grapes the people personally peel for them but back in the day kings wouldn't be served kings were anointed to serve kings were anointed to go fight so here is jesus who's anointed in the jordan river and immediately that's exactly what he does he gets up and he's led by the holy spirit into the wilderness to fight to do battle why because the whole point of jesus's life the whole point of jesus's life from the beginning is to rescue the point of jesus's life from the beginning is to fight for those who need to be fought for the most and from the beginning this is crazy what happens from the beginning jesus is being tempted to abandon the fight why say sir the devil comes up and says he listen pay attention to your hunger pay attention to your glory pay attention to your security to your comfort from the very beginning jesus is being attempted to abandon his mission he's being attempted to abandon his fight because we know this it's one thing to start it is a whole nother thing to stay it's one thing to begin the fight it's another thing to end the fight and that's why jesus came he came to fight for you he came to fight for us he came to seek and to save the lost right jesus came to be a ransom for sinners jesus came to take away sin and so here and his last words on the cross he's revealing that that's still his mission i mean think about this here is jesus he's been betrayed by everyone he's ever loved and trusted he's been abandoned by everyone he's ever loved and trusted he has been mocked he has been scourged he's been stripped naked he's crowned with thorns and he's now been crucified on the cross and in that moment in in the last round of his fighting that thing that was jesus's number one preoccupation at the beginning of his ministry is still his number one focus at the end of his ministry because jesus's first last words are father forgive them for they do not know what they're doing his first last words at the extreme moment of his life when when most of us would be attempted to resentment right most of us be tempted to feel sorry for ourselves was to be tempted to to just kind of turn in jesus is not thinking of himself what's he thinking of and this is the crazy thing jesus is thinking of the his two main preoccupations the two main preoccupations of jesus during his whole life were the father and you where the father and every sinner who ever needed mercy jesus said i came not to do my own well i came through my father's will by this is my father glorified that i'm lifted up like jesus's preoccupation his whole life is the only reason i'm here is for my father and the other reason i'm here is for you and then in this moment jesus reveals the depth of his heart his first last words father forgive them because jesus we know this he didn't come to call the righteous he came to call sinners that that with his last breaths he is still calling jesus christ came to save sinners so his last his first last words disclose that there is no greater mission there's no greater point in his life and i think it's really remarkable to realize that this is a mission that he was tempted to abandon from the beginning and in the same way what is the what does the evil one say in the in the wilderness leave one says well if you are the son of god then satisfy your hunger if you are the son of god then let yourself be glorified if you're the son of god then find security and on the cross what happens on the cross the crowd is saying well if you are the christ come down from there one of the thieves on the cross is saying well if you are the king of the jews save uh save yourself and us and that's the same battle that we face right the same battle that we face is the same battle that jesus faced basically like with that battle is well if god really loved you then this won't be happening to you in the wilderness if you really are the son of god if he really is your father this won't be happening to you on the cross if you really are the christ this won't be happening to you and how many of us in the midst of our hunger in the midst of our loss in the midst of our grief we have that same temptation the same temptation to abandon the father well if god really loves you then this wouldn't be happening to you and so we're tempted to doubt god's goodness we're tempted to doubt god's love we're tempted to shrink back from the fight and this is incredible because jesus's first last word cuts through all of that jesus's first last word is simply father abba i think that just if we just stopped here it would be enough because jesus from the very beginning has been tempted to abandon his mission he's been attempted to abandon who he ultimately is and with one word he cuts through all of that by saying father again abba and as you know this you know that abba is not it's not overly formal i'll say it like that that abba is an expression of jesus's intimate relationship with his father and in other words i've said this a thousand times but years ago i finally realized what it is when jesus said when you pray say abba because when i was a kid it was like well i was like daddy and i'm like i'm not saying daddy or there's this nun in louisiana she's like well she says papa i'm like i tried it and it didn't work didn't fit i realized what jesus was saying when he says abba is he saying what i say when i say abba which is dad so here's jesus from the cross begging his dad but also jesus from the cross his first last word being dad and that word cutting through any kind of temptation to doubt in god's love or to attempt to tempt him to doubt in god's goodness because that relationship cuts through all of it and this is what we're called to do too for us in the battle when we say well why would god let you do this if you really cared about you he wouldn't put you through this grief if he really loved you then you wouldn't be here that we get to do the same thing that we get to use jesus's first last word because because of jesus we actually have god as our dad and so my invitation for all of us is that we get to say in the midst of the temptation and when we're fighting to be able to say dad to actually use jesus first last word for ourselves and then to realize what jesus says after this dad forgive them because why what what's most important comes out most clearly in the extreme moments for jesus it wasn't himself for jesus it was his father for jesus it was abba for jesus the reality is he's doing all of this for a reason i mean just think about this is the last thing for jesus he's doing all of this for a reason what's the reason because sin is the worst thing in the world for all the grief and all the sorrow all the suffering all the death in this world sin is still the worst thing in this world and jesus knew what he was doing he knew why he was doing it and he knew for whom he was doing it he knew for whom he was dying he knew the kind of people that he was fighting for he knew the kind of people that he was dying for he knew the kind of people that he was begging for and he said dad forgive them jesus's first last words dad forgive them i mean how if you think about this just pause for a second how important must this have been to jesus does jesus jesus didn't just come to give us an example he didn't just come to show us the way that jesus came to save us so at the end of his life with his first last word what is jesus revealing without these words without this prayer without this heart of jesus we would be lost absolutely lost if it wasn't for what he was doing on the cross imagine even now even now he wants you even now he he fights for even now he begs for you because it'd be really easy for him to say well i'm done yeah that's that's like i'm done thinking of you i am done fighting for you i'm done taking you back i'm done begging for you but he doesn't say that he says dad forgive them he's not done it's not over and he's not saying these words for posterity his first last words disclose the price of my sin his first last words disclose the price of my soul the question is can you accept that can you accept this love and on the cross again his words weren't for posterity on the cross his first last words were about you that when he begged his father dad forgive them his first last words were about you that these words reveal that you you were the one who was on his heart i invite you to stand as we profess our faith in this god who loves us i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son and with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen confident in our father's love for us his undying love for us we now approach him with all of our needs that through the ministry of the church people of all nations will believe and profess that jesus is lord we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that governments may foster justice by acknowledging god as supreme over every human law and activity we especially pray for the people of ukraine we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for the strength to resist the temptation to discriminate against the poor the immigrant the elderly and the unborn we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who are ill that god's love and our care may bring them healing and strength we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all who have died may be purified by sin purified of sin and blessed with eternal in the eternal vision of god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we continue our prayer by offering our diocese of duluth forever vocations and you can pray for vocations and your diocese as well almighty father we beg you for an increase in religious vocations and holy marriages in our diocese help us to be generous in our response to your call choose from our homes those who are needed for your work and strengthen us with the courage to say yes and to follow you help us as a diocese as a parish as families to encourage and foster vocations to the priesthood permanent diaconate and consecrated life we commend our prayers to our patroness mary queen of the rosary and ask this through jesus christ our lord amen at this point in mass one of the great graces we have is the ability to uh refocus ourselves and refocus what we're doing knowing that from the cross jesus prayed on our behalf that he begged the father for mercy for us this is an opportunity at the first sunday of lent to be able to say okay what if i what am i offering to the lord for all the good things he's given to me what is the last four what have the last four days look like these first four days of lent and to bring them to the altar whatever those sacrifices have been because our sacrifice on their own that's great that's wonderful but our sacrifices united with jesus that's what changes the world our sufferings on their own are just painful but our sufferings united with jesus that is what changes the world so my invitation right now as we bring our gifts to the altar also bring your sacrifices bring your sufferings bring your griefs to the altar because it's here that they get transformed blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right in jesus name it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food jesus consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent he taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting of your sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victimize death by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with this holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all your saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help this made this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope daniel our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion or merciful father gathered to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom we bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever may the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer one another a sign of christ peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed hmm goodbye my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you never permit me to be separated from you amen one does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of god matthew 4 verse 4 let us pray renew now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord um i don't think there's any announcements so we're just going to keep praying st michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into house satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of
