the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit my dear sisters and brothers we on this first sunday of lent are invited into the desert with jesus so to prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries let us humbly acknowledge our sin and cry out for the lord's mercy lord jesus you came to reconcile us to one another and to the father lord have mercy lord understand christ jesus you heal the wounds of sin in the division christ have mercy christ and lord jesus your intercede for us with your father lord have mercy on the lord have mercy on may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray grant almighty god through the early observance of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then he shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord so be with me lord when i am in trouble we me lord when i am in trouble you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble no evil shall be for you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i am in trouble upon their hands they shall bury you up lest you dash your foot against the stone you shall trot upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me [Music] because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and his soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] praise and honor honor and glory glory to you lord jesus christ [Music] we do not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from god [Music] the lord be with you [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command these stones to become bread and jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instance the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the prevalent of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you unless you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord the desert a privileged place of encounter with god again and again in sacred scripture we find god encountering those whom god chooses in the desert in a place of utter dependence though it's a place of privileged encounter with god it's also a dangerous place a place where what is normal is not available water food companionship others around oftentimes the desert is a scary place every first sunday of lent we encounter jesus in the desert today in luke's account it is the holy spirit who leads jesus into the desert from the jordan jesus after having encountered his heavenly father and hearing this is my beloved son and whom i favor rests is now sent into the desert to confront evil to confront satan to confront hell itself symbolized in the desert as i was praying this morning i knew that the homily that i had prepared that's before me on the ambo was not what god wanted me to preach the lord led me into the desert this morning and said you've got to go there i know you want to be next week because the second sunday of lent is always about the transfiguration and i want to be on the mountain and i want to be there where everything is wonderful and i want to build a tent there for jesus moses and elijah and i want to just kind of glory in the lord and and the lord said uh-uh you've got to be in the desert that's where i'm leading the people that's where the church is and you need to be there my sisters and brothers the desert is a vulnerable place lent is a vulnerable time if we take it seriously a time when we truly are invited to examine our deepest selves if we allow ourselves to enter truly into lent and into the desert we've got to allow the lord to strip away whatever it is that we cling to that we think is going to make everything just fine to be stripped away from those assurances where we think we're right those assurances that if we just do the best we can everything will turn out and be like we hope the desert wants to take all that away and invite us as jesus did to not trust on our own strength our own power our own abilities our own accomplishments our own plans our own control but surrender everything and to trust in the father that all those illusions those temptations which are so real in our lives will not bring us the gift of eternal life and so my sisters and brothers the responsorial psalm i think speaks to us so truly in our day be with me lord when i am in trouble our world is in grave trouble the news that keeps coming forth from ukraine gets worse and worse refugees not only from ukraine but from so many countries in our world continue to increase people are so in trouble and we are so blessed and so we as a people of faith we need to increase our prayer our fasting our almsgiving on behalf of those who are in need i don't want to be in the desert i don't want to be in a place of vulnerability i don't want to be having to confront evil not just across the world but right next door and most frightening in my own heart the good news about being in the desert though is that jesus is there with us jesus entered into the desert to assure us that jesus is there in every temptation that we face in every desire to run away in every addiction that we want to dive into because life is so difficult jesus says i am with you be not afraid my sisters and brothers who are watching this on live stream i have a challenge for you if you are already out going shopping visiting friends going out for dinner lunch whatever and you are not here physically at mass i challenge you to be here virtual reality is not what we celebrate as a catholic church i challenge you to get off the couch and get into the pew my sisters and brothers we are not a people that are called to be afraid we are a people called to be faithful to follow jesus follow jesus into the desert onto the mountain into the marketplace and even to the cross and so on this first sunday of our lenten journey i want to offer myself to you to say that i will be with you on this lenten journey that i will walk with you support you pray for you fast for you as feebly as it might be and i want to invite you to walk together with each other to not be afraid to enter into this time to come to the retreat on saturday to be nourished and strengthened so that we as the people of faith can truly shine forth on behalf of others my sisters and brothers let us not be afraid let us look to the lord jesus let us follow him into the desert onto the mountain to the cross and to the resurrection and the gift and the promise of eternal life forever amen throughout lent we'll be praying the apostles creed and the words will be on the screen i believe in the father father under pontius pilate was crucified he descended to death on the third day he rose again he ascended into heaven and received right hand about the father almighty and thereof come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the devil the life of the world amen we cry out to the lord asking for our needs for the church that we may recognize the glory of christ's face in the least of our brothers and sisters we pray lord hear our prayer for peace that god will bring an end to the violence in ukraine protect the innocent and help us care for the refugees of the war we pray and for all who are celebrating the right of election this wednesday that they may grow in their knowledge of god's love for them and into greater unity with the church we pray for the people of western washington that they may be united with us here in the holy sacrifice of the mass the source and the summit of all that is good we pray and for all who have died especially maria reed may they now share in the eternal reward in heaven we pray heavenly father your son teaches us that we do not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from your mouth hear us as we seek to listen to you and answer us according to your loving will and plan through christ our lord [Music] to us in pity for thine [Music] is [Music] who seek thy name [Music] our sins are many this we know thy mercy show and for the order of thy name our fainting souls to life replay give us a self-control that springs from discipline of unworthies that fasting inward secretly the soul may purely dwell with me we praise the holy trinity one god unchanging unity that we promise our absence may read the fruit of the penitents [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual with all the spirit drink contrary hardly accepted by you their sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you lord wash away my nuclear cleanse me from all my sins pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father may the lord amen give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord turn the page the lord be with you [Music] lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ your beloved son by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] gloria [Music] me [Music] you therefore almighty father we bless through jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend to sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us we ourselves have turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled oh lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another through your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your son whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined at supper he himself took bread into his hands and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands and confessing your mercy he gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of men the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord [Music] until you come again [Music] and professors [Music] celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us also together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously to endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from you and from one another may your spirit make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people and may your spirit keep us in communion with francis our pope with paul our bishop with all the bishops and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and all the saints with our brothers and sisters and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity in a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ jesus our lord through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art [Music] thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it [Music] as is forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom [Music] lord
