your benefit namely that the mystery was made known to me by revelation it was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit that the gentiles are co-heirs members of the same body and co-partners in the promise in christ jesus through the gospel the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] god [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew [Music] when jesus was born in bethlehem of judea in the days of king herod behold magi from the east arrived in jerusalem saying where is the newborn king of the jews we saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage when king herod heard this he was greatly troubled in all jerusalem with him assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people he inquired of them where the christ was to be born they said to him in bethlehem of judea for thus it has been written through the prophet and you bethlehem land of judah are by no means least among the rulers of judah since from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people israel then herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance he sent them to bethlehem and said go and search diligently for the child when you have found him bring me word that i too may go and do him homage after their audience with the king they set out and behold the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was they were overjoyed at seeing the star and on entering the house they saw the child with his mother mary they prostrated themselves and did him homage then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh and having been warned in a dream not to return to herod they departed for their country by another way the gospel of the lord [Music] no dear brothers and sisters that as we have rejoiced at the nativity of our lord jesus christ so by leave of god's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his resurrection who is our savior on the second day of march we'll fall at wednesday and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred lantern season on the 70th day of april you will celebrate with joy yesterday the paschal feast of our lord jesus christ on the 29th day of may will be the ascension of our lord jesus christ on the fifth day of june the feast of pentecost [Music] on the 90th day of june the feast of the most holy body and blood of christ on the 27th day of november the first sunday of the advent of our lord jesus christ to whom is honor and glory forever dear brothers and sisters in christ last sunday i stood in the vast brand new cathedral of our lady of arabia in bahrain the emir donated this land for this important structure while the country is largely muslim some 15 percent of the population is christian and there is evidence of a christian presence already in the 12th century certainly most of the catholics to there today are immigrants who have come to work in bahrain as i prayed in that cathedral i knew that god willing i would be in our basilica a week later and equally large and certainly more magnificent structure it would be to celebrate the epiphany of our lord our commemoration of the arrival of non-jewish wise men from the east who wanted to worship the newborn king from the poetry of isaiah to the declaration of saint paul and the narrative of the gospel we are being urged to recognize the revelation to the whole world of the goodness of almighty god there is a clear notion of movement and oneness in this unique solemnity a catalyst for our mission to evangelize when we think about the son of god taking on our human condition in fulfillment of the divine plan we are struck by his manifestations in an ever-widening revelation of his presence first in response to our blessed mother's ascent to her role in that plan the word becomes flesh we celebrate that moment on the 25th of march the annunciation and we recognize how precious is that child in the womb of his mother our enthusiasm for the defense of human life stems from the knowledge that mary bore the son of god for nine months not a mass of cells but a precious child the savior of the world that manifestation although recognized by elizabeth and hailed by her son john in her womb was private hidden necessarily the first public manifestation was to the shepherds at the moment of jesus birth in bethlehem sometimes that is considered his manifestation to the chosen people today we celebrate his manifestation to the non-jewish world and we think about the role of the chosen people in the history of humanity the savior of the world was jewish the chosen people are chosen not in the sense of closed or as an exclusion of outsiders but chosen for their role in service to all humanity to quote pope pius xii all of us are spiritually semites think about it for a moment almost 50 percent of the world's population [Music] christians muslims and jews believe in and worship the one true god the god first revealed to abraham the god who established a relationship with the hebrews and in his son revealed his saving will to all nations perhaps if we recognized our ancestry there would be less tension in today's world among the believers in one god in his letter for the world day of peace yesterday the bishop of rome heightened the importance of dialogue he was speaking about the dialogue of generations but it can easily be called can easily be applied to inter-religious dialogue as well and i quote dialogue entails listening to one another sharing different views coming to agreement and walking together promoting such dialogue involves breaking up the hard and barren soil of conflict and indifference in order to sow the seeds of a lasting and shared peace end of the citation solemnity certainly urges us to move we see the magi leave home and begin a long arduous journey to reach the holy child those journeys are long and complicated today let me assure you imagine what they must have been more than 2 000 years ago however they decided that the goal the visit the encounter with the lord jesus was worth the effort oppressed and shut in as we have been by the restrictions of the pandemic let us not forget how to go out our faith urges us to be active in sharing what we have experienced mary taught us to see the need and to make haste to the hill country to attend to elizabeth we also look out and see the pressing need of those who have not met christ or who have inadvertently slipped away they are also our responsibility opening the door to salvation is a part of the mission of all of the baptized the pilgrimage of life began at conception but the mission has its beginning in the waters of rebirth in baptism it continues as we grow in our love and knowledge of christ and the mission he has entrusted to us we gather at the table of the lord because we know that we need his body and blood to nourish us as we the bishops of the united states wrote in our recent pastoral letter on the eucharist the person who shares worthily in the eucharist is enabled more and more to live the new law of love given by christ precisely because christ communicates himself in the sacrament of the altar the foundation of our personal and moral transformation is the communion with himself that christ establishes in baptism and deepens in the eucharist in the celebration of the mass we are shown what love truly is and we receive grace that enables us to imitate the love that christ shows us the personal and moral transformation that is sustained by the eucharist reaches out to every sphere of human life it can also reshape the life of our society as a whole we all need to be consistent in bringing the love of christ not only to our personal lives but also to every dimension of our public lives that reality continues the revelation of the presence of christ when each one of us radiates his presence in our world then the mystery of his love is made concrete and can be experienced by others shepherds wise men apostles disciples and saints all made christ manifest the task is now ours and the world needs to experience this light now more than ever before to paraphrase the message for the world day of peace again the practice of dialogue can firmly root us in the present and from here revisit the past and look to the future to revisit the past in order to learn from history and heal old wounds that sometimes still trouble us the lord jesus does not destroy our natural differences the beauty of diversity which makes the world so wonderful rather there is equality but not sameness we sing in harmony not but not not unison as the choir teaches us so well our natural differences are not destroyed by our supernatural life in christ because in him everyone fulfills his or her true identity we know that good light brightens colors makes shapes more distinct perfects perspective and sharpens contrast so almighty god fulfills and brings to perfection every race class age occupation nation and region the wise men were open to the light and allowed it to draw them to the fullness of light and life like the cathedral in bahrain we can do no less because we have been reborn in him nourished by him and missioned by his church our lady of arabia even without an exterior cross stands out in testimony of care to the care of a catholic minority our baptismal task is to reflect the light of christ so as to stand out as beacons who lead others to life in him i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen in the hope of the lord's presence of salvation we now raise our prayers to heaven that pope francis and all pastors of the church may be strengthened to bring the light of christ to all nations and to instill hope in the unconditional mercy of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for world leaders that their laws and policies will help to ensure religious liberty for all people let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for married couples that they will bear witness to the sanctity of marriage through their faithfulness perseverance and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god will touch the hearts of those he is calling to the priesthood diaconate and consecrated religious life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the special intentions that we hold in our hearts and for the intentions that have been entrusted to the national shrine by that it may become for us the body and blood of your most beloved son our lord jesus christ the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands and with eyes raised to heaven to you o god his almighty father giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness have been privileged to participate in the perfect prayer and our presence in the one sacrifice of calvary allow me allow my expression of heartfelt gratitude be manifest to monsignor rossi whose kind invitation has made this gathering an annual tradition for me father ayala is probably wondering why he accepted the mission to direct the liturgy at this national shrine as we move toward the end of the christmas season but i'm very grateful for his capable direction maestro latona the choir and the organist have helped us pray and made our worship more fitting monsignor bonano the great attention of the sister servants of the mary immaculate and the other staff members of the shrine all contribute to our prayer in a special way i thank all of those who make possible the transmission of our celebration especially the generous donors who make the live streaming possible and ewtn and the other networks if we cannot gather for worship in the shrine we can at least participate virtually i never cease to be amazed at how many throughout the world follow these broadcasts we go forth nourished by the savior so that we might make manifest his goodness and proclaim his saving message to a hungry and wounded world let us reflect the light of that star for all to see and follow to all a blessed and fruitful 2020 the lord be with you and with your spirit bow down for the blessing may god who has called you out of darkness into his wonderful light pour out in kindness of his blessing upon you and make your hearts firm in faith hope and charity amen and since in all confidence you follow christ who appeared today in the world as a light shining in darkness may god make you too a light for your brothers and sisters amen and so when your pilgrimage has ended may you come to him whom the magi sought as they followed the star and whom they found with great joy the light from light who is christ the lord amen and may the blessing of almighty god the father and
