[Music] [Applause] [Music] good afternoon and welcome to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for the celebration of mass on this fifth Sunday of Easter because coronavirus precautions are still being observed the doors of Mary's shrine remain closed to the faithful for the celebration of mass but thanks to the generous support of Knights of Columbus were able to bring the mass to you since you aren't able to receive our Lord and Holy Communion this day we invite you during communion to make a spiritual community asking the Lord to fill you with his presence at the conclusion of Mass this afternoon we will livestream exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament pray throes you with you at 2:30 and the chapel Divine Mercy at 3:00 we will then conclude our live stream broadcast with benediction of the most pleasant sacrament I hope that you can join us for this afternoon of prayer today we also celebrate Mother's Day here at Mary's shrine on Mother's Day we present flowers at the end of mass to all mothers and those who serve as mother as a sign of our appreciation for their selfless devotion since we are able to resent flowers today we present all mothers living and deceased as a beautiful flower to Our Lady Our Blessed Mother asking her intercession at this mess to keep all mothers in her care as they have cared for us happy Mother's Day and God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit the Lord be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what I have done and what I have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God may Almighty God have mercy on us ever living God constantly accomplished the Paschal mystery within us that those who are pleased to make new in Holy Baptism may under your protective care bear much fruit and come to the joys of life eternal through our Lord Jesus Christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever amen a reading from the Acts of the Apostles as the number of disciples continued to grow the Helenus complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution so the twelve called together the community of the disciples and said it is not right for us to neglect the Word of God to serve a table brothers select from among you seven reputable men filled with the spirit and wisdom whom we shall appoint to this task whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the Ministry of the word the proposal was acceptable to the whole community so they chose stephen a man filled with faith and the holy spirit also philip pre-chorus nicanor timon parmenas and nicolas of antioch a convert to judaism they presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them the Word of God continued to spread and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith the word of the Lord [Music] Lord let your mercy be on as we place our trust in you [Music] place our trust [Music] exhort you just in the Lord praise from the upright [Music] upright is the word of the Lord and all his works are trustworthy [Music] see the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear Him a part of those who hope for his kindness [Music] a reading from the first letter of Saint Peter beloved come to him a living stone rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God and like living stones let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ for it says in Scripture behold I am laying a stone in Zion a cornerstone chosen and precious and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame therefore its value is for you who have faith but for those without faith the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone and a stone that will make people stumble and a rock that will make them fall they stumble by disobeying the word as is their destiny you are a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people of his own so that you may announce the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his wonderful light the word of the Lord thanks be to God [Music] No [Music] [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to John glory to you O Lord jesus said to his disciples do not let your hearts be troubled you have faith in God have faith also in me in my father's house there are many dwelling places if there were not what I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come back again and take you to myself so that where I am you also may be where I am going you know the way Thomas said to him master we do not know where you are going how can we know the way jesus said to him I am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me if you know me then you will also know my father from now on you do know him and have seen him Philip said to him master show us the father and that will be enough for us jesus said to him have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me Philip whoever has seen me has seen the father how can you say show us the father do you not believe that I am in the father and the father is in me the words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own the father who dwells in me is doing his works believe me that I am in the father and the father is in me or else believe because of the works themselves amen amen I say to you whoever believes in me will do the works that I do and we'll do greater ones than these because I am going to the Father the gospel of the Lord do not let your hearts be troubled have faith in God and faith in me my friends these words of Jesus from our gospel passage today are among the most comforting and consoling words throughout the Sacred Scripture throughout our lives there are many times when we need to hear them sometimes even every day and certainly during this coronavirus pandemic we want to hear them again and again do not let your hearts be troubled have faith in God and faith in me Jesus tells us if we open our hearts our lives to the Lord on a regular basis he will always allow those words to help us at the right moment only God can say them and then truly back them up with actions that are effective in our lives as we celebrate Mass on this fifth Sunday of Easter we are encouraged to reflect not so much on God's ability to make his words effective we already know that but rather on our ability to open our hearts to him every day this is one of the basic characteristics of the spiritual life and probably the one that is the most challenging the Apostles were beginning to experience that challenge in our gospel today and our Lord's words were intended to encourage them that day and in the many challenges that they would encounter in the days ahead of them for our reflection on this Sunday and throughout this week let us ask ourselves what must we do to keep the eyes of our souls fixed on the Lord what are we to do that is not an easy question for us to answer ourselves but Jesus gave us the answer in today's passage from Saint John's Gospel he tells us that we must place our faith in Him and have a radical trust in him and in the church who is the guardian of that faith and is easy to say but can be difficult at times to make a reality in our lives and yet the Lord gives us the ability to do it and to increase our faith even in the midst of this current pandemic when sometimes we are challenged greatly in the gift of faith the second half of all of this is that there is more that we must do within ourselves an increase in faith is not something that is passive in other words we don't just sit back and let it happen to us as if it were some magical thing faith is certainly a gift only from God and we are called to be proactive in our quest for a stronger and a deeper faith through our daily prayers and devotions coming to Mass every Sunday even in these days through this broadcast and coming to Mass when we return to some normalcy and can reopen our doors once again by coming to mass during the week if possible we can grow in our faith by studying what our faith teaches us we encourage the gift of our faith within ourselves by growing each day to live out the virtues to say it simply we must put our faith into action as we are witnessing in the lives the Apostles in our first reading each day during this Easter season when we do that in a genuine way our faith will grow ever deeper and never stronger and isn't that what the ultimate goal is in the spiritual life my friends those words that Jesus spoke in the gospel today would have a new meaning for the Apostles and would be a source of encouragement for them to persevere that too is what Jesus hopes for for each of us let us begin today to truly strive for the deeper faith in our thoughts in our desires in our actions to all of our mothers living and dead who we wish a very happy Mother's Day today your called to and can be an example to your children to your husband dear friends and neighbors and to all of us when you persevere in your own faith the rest of us young and old are grateful for the example that you already give do not let your hearts be troubled have faith in God and faith in me together with our Blessed Mother under her title pillar of faith and during this month of May when we honor her in a special way let us ask our Blessed Mother to pray for us and you help us along the way along the book image of faith amen you I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true God from True God begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins I look forward to the resurrection of the Dead and the life of the world to come amen and now United in prayer let us turn to the Lord and offer him our needs and petitions for all members of the church but the gospel may be the light that shines forth in their daily words and actions let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for our country that we may be united in building a society in which all people have the opportunity to live with dignity and hope let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for all those who receive ordination and profess sacred vows may the Holy Spirit grant them divine hope and strength let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for those afflicted by the corona virus pandemic but God may grant health to the sick strength to those who care for them comfort to families and salvation to all those who have died let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer that many will hear God's call to lives a faithful service has priests deacons and in consecrated life let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for the special intentions that we bring to this mass for the shrine prayer guild members and for all mothers living and dead who have been enrolled in the national shrines mother's day novena let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer that all those who have died and gone before us in faith may now enjoy the fullness of life with the saints in heaven let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer and let us now recite together our prayer to our lady health of the sick Oh Mary you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of Hope we entrust ourselves to you health of the sick who at the cross took part in Jesus's pain keeping your faith firm you salvation of the Roman people know what we need and we are sure you will provide so that is in Cana of Galilee we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial help us mother of divine love to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us through the cross to the joy of the resurrection amen under your protection we seek refuge Holy Mother of God do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial but deliver us from every danger Oh glorious and less adverse [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] great rather not my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty father Oh God who by the wonderful exchange affected in this sacrifice have made us partakers of the one supreme Godhead grant we pray that as we have come to know your truth we may make it ours by a worthy Way of life through Christ our Lord amen the Lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you O Lord but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed by the oblation of his body he brought the sacrifices of all to fulfillment in the reality of the cross and by commending himself to you for our salvation showed himself the priest the altar and the Lamb of sacrifice therefore overcome with Paschal joy every land every people exalts in your praise and even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] you are indeed holy O Lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our Lord Jesus Christ by the power and working of the Holy Spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the Sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore O Lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our Lord Jesus Christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore O Lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in Thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body one spirit in Christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God blessed Joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the Saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray O Lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant Francis our Pope Wilton our bishop and his assistant bishops the order of Bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your home listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful Father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him O God Almighty father in the unity of the Holy Spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and [Music] at the in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the Blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ Lord Jesus Christ who said to your apostles peace I leave you my peace I give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for
