Drawing PRETTY and UGLY Character Mashups...

g'day everyone i'm jazza and i like to experiment so i asked you on twitter uh what are some gorgeous characters and what are some hideous ugly characters i'm gonna collect all of the appropriate or worthwhile prompts put them in a big list and randomly pluck out two and smush them into a single character we're gonna do that a couple of times in this video but of course i'd encourage you and welcome you to give that a go yourself it'll be a fun exercise share your creations on twitter and instagram using pretty ugly challenge or of course uh on the jazza community subreddit let's start off with this challenge with some pretty and ugly characters gorgeous uh uh from lord of the rings will turner from pirates of the caribbean all right ugly character jar jabbing char jumpings quasimodo poor lara croft godzilla jessica rabbit belle well belle does mean beautiful voldemort nice original sonic movie design i love it let's put squidward in the ugly one we'll put handsome squidward and the pretty one elsa the grinch tinkerbell rapunzel shrek ariel at ursula all right wonder woman freddy let's take one more in each chunley why not stretchy jazz effect all right we got a full list of pretty and ugly characters there's only one thing left to do three times one thing left but to do it through it we'll do it three times i have my pretty and ugly custom generator prompts of course quick shout out to the jazzers arty games app if you haven't checked it out it's well worth checking out because it's full of art games and prompts but the custom generator is certainly my favorite thing because you can put in whatever the hell you want like this and you can just hit go and you'll get the prompt i always need to take a deep breath first chun li and ja jab we want to take the most recognizable features of each of these characters and put them in together and i would argue that chun chumley's most recognizable features are gonna be her costume her legs and her hair but with jar jar it's gonna be his eyes his mouth and his ears and he's probably his posture so let's just start by putting some of those things down so for example at the moment i've got a bit of a jar jar face going but i need to make sure i'm getting enough of the chun-li face in to have a an equal mix of both parts so let's add the the chun-li hair style lovely long eyelashes is this pose that chunley does a lot so we'll do we'll have that happen so we've got the bare bones here so now we're going to just amplify the costume so we've got these big puffy chunnily sleeves i think if we uh accentuate the hands big long alien hand things with long nails and all of that let's uh go to this lower neckline thing that jar jar has going on while chun li does have this sort of loin cloth jar jar does have the uh the vest go into these flaps on the side so let's just do both and i think that's a pretty pretty good mix i think we just sort of need to see how effective it is by putting in some line work starting for the face by the way if you're ever drawing a character and you just want a way for them to look a little uncanny drawing every individual tooth is one of the best ways to do that when you draw the appeal sort of comes from the simplification of the visuals and there's just something about seeing every tooth in a hand-drawn mouth that always looks off channely has these little embellishments on our outfit just these like these line shape things so i want to keep some of those in again trying to adapt to the jar jar costume but mainly through the reshaping so just sort of then fitting these lines and shapes to uh to the new costume shape and with the line work done we get rid of our construction lines so we can at last fully appreciate our uh chun chun bink's artwork this is this is something special but it's gonna be even more special after add some color [Music] all right time to move on to prompt number two that first one was pretty unique let's see what uh what's in store for us now and ariel and squidward i think we need to do the classic ariel on the rock with the waves behind her moment that's like the real like this beautiful disney princesses singing first things first i'm i'm heavily referencing obviously the image itself so i'm just gonna lightly sketch in the uh very like rough construction of what ariel in that scene looks like in this reference image i'm looking at ariel has this like beautiful flowing hair that's like flying about in the ocean wind but squidward has a big bald potato head we'll figure out how that works later let's put down the rest of this aerial construction first so i've got my aerial construction it's looking pretty good now let's get up i need to find the things that stand out most about each of them and bring them together and obviously squidward is well the nose and the head shape so i'm going to rework this head shape we're getting a bit broader at the top i'll do like the bottom eyelids up in enthusiasm but they can be like squidward eyelids otherwise the eyes themselves can be like you know classic beautiful disney eyes and then we'll do the squidward brow but the nose i mean it's the squidward nose and that is gonna have to be pretty much unchanged because it is the most beautiful and squidward thing about squidward and of course the other thing about squidward that stands out is his squiddy tentacles so let's reshape these arms to be thin at the top they can taper down to be thicker at the bottom and then we just have these big goofy like tentacle arm things hanging over the rock here squidward has like a little pot belly bottom like sort of poking over his legs so let's keep keep a bit of that and for some reason i feel like these little shells should be like little goofy shells just stuck on top rather than a proper bra i think we've pretty much got a design so let's put on some line work [Music] oh my god i think it's going to be all the more majestic with some color and last but not least we have one final prompt oh my god we're gonna have to use wonder woman cartoon character as the bass because stretchy jazzer avatar hit but by the way i should clarify for those of you who don't know it's been about i'd say a year and a half since i used the animated intro that i made years ago for draw with jazz when the channel was called draw with jazza and in that animated intro there is one specific frame that actually there's a couple that have been retweeted a number of times but the best one is this one frame of animation this is what's called an animation smear it's a very very important thing in animation it adds dynamism to the motion it's like a motion blur but if it were one physical object which is why they look goofy and stretched i made a whole video on animation smears by the way they're really fun to look at and i've reacted to them so i'll link to that in the card in the description but this is me getting way too defensive about a really dumb looking face of the jazz avatar so that's what that's where it comes from uh and that apparently is what we're gonna spend another hour turning into something i blame you but really i mean i put it in the app and i press the button and here we are so let's do it so this time i'm gonna i'm gonna use the smeary jazzer avatar face as the base so i'll start my construction around that and then we'll mix in wonder woman and see where it gets us hey this is pretty much the squidward nose i mean i'm like carefully trying to capture the essence of my terrible in-between it's not terrible it's a good in-between it's a good smear there's this uh wonderful awkwardness about the hand pose here we have this thumb jutting out into a weird like claw and then these fingers are just i mean they're lazy fingers i'm going to be honest it's an animation smear so it's only going to show up for like 1 30th of a second and it's meant to just accentuate the motion it's an afterthought they're not the animation frames you really focus on until you just see them again and again guys all right that's that's my foundation now let's wonder warming it up baby let's do this oh boy the stars from wonder woman's costume in this context feel like patronizing like star for effort good job let's mix in wonder woman's boots with my character's shoe design and i'm gonna have a hand mid animation smear to keep in the spirit of this illustration so the hand is stretching down in a really contorted way mid lasso of truth whip people this is so tough all right let's put some line work on this thing there is something very wrong with me that this is the sort of thing i've spent the last few hours of my life on all very right with me i'm interested in your feedback let me know in the comments but i i partially blame you for a lot of these which is the great thing about uh involving the community in these drawing prompt ideas because i get to make horrific things like this and and and it's your fault really so as punishment you're going to sit there and you're going to watch me colour this monstrosity let's go [Music] so now we get to the most gratifying thing for an artist to experience which is after hours of work to look at the finished result and just soak it in and really appreciate it let's start off with chun chun bings i mean yeah i think that's a pretty amazing merger there's there's equal amounts of both chun-li and jar jar binks therefore equal amounts of beautiful and ugly and i guess the result i'm gonna leave that up to you that's our first one then we [Music] look i think it's a net positive if you count laughter it's really fun and funny to see all this stuff put together but again i'm interested in your thoughts so ariel squidward again an amazing combination thematically and actually visually pretty seamless too definitely equal amounts of both and i think the mix of colors and and visual design features of both has come together quite organically and last but not least i mean that's pretty special that we did that together this video has been a whole load of weird and wonderful and they're the best combination of things at times and i had a lot of fun i really hope you guys have enjoyed this video too if you want to give this a go yourself i highly encourage you to you don't have to be a professional to before the pandemic also i want to quickly touch on the uh the recent character design uh session relaunch i am overwhelmed uh with the response that that has gotten now from a youtube perspective algorithmically speaking it has decent views but not like amazing views when it comes to like viral videos or even well-performing videos on this channel but it performed better than i expected and way more importantly than that i had so much fun and to see your enthusiasm and excitement about a bit of a return to form but in a new format and with a new level of polish and experience and and just a new outlook and ambition moving forward has really invigorated me and excited me and i want to thank you so much like every comment counts both in this video and that video all those things that essentially you know these aren't the most clickbaity videos in the world but they really are fun and i am having a lot of fun rediscovering that and focusing on that as well of course i'm going to be doing some fun clickable and ambitious videos as well but it's it's really exciting to me to be able to bring a lot of this stuff back into the mix and find ways to bring it all together and i
