Casting a silver necklace from a Victorian dolls head. Making unique jewellery from our finds!

so I was about to film a video of me making something but like who's gone missing and I've been looking for and I noticed her up here I think she's gone broody [Music] we have no man shrews so the eggs that she's sitting on are not fertile hello white room look this is one of her eggs but she's obviously not interested in it there's mom of now white room you're gonna have to get off those edges will gonna have to get off the Yankees that's one eggy one lovely eggy I'm sorry I'm sorry this one - eggy [Music] come on [Music] no clunking no she just does she's broke she refuses to get up [Music] come on you can't sit up here because the father needs these mails true [Music] oh she will she wants to be a mom but she can't be I've got to get her down though it's dangerous [Music] you'll brown Schwing [Music] she is [Music] I know come on and you come on so I thought today and I would make something because I haven't actually made anything yet on our channel so I thought I'd do some and sand casting which is a really ancient technique for casting metal so I thought that I might cast one of our recent finds and it's either gonna be that little doll I think it's a frozen Charlotte ahead and oh and all that little leg but I've already cast a leg before this is the leg we found on our first and one of our first trips to the field of dreams so I don't know I might do the head but only half the head cuz the full head in solid silver might be a bit chunky nice you can see I'm actually wearing a dress I don't usually wear dresses I felt like wearing a dress today so I put on a dress and it's it's raining and but you know I'm British and we're pretty much used to the rain so I'm going to continue despite the rain yeah this is a bit strange never done this before but let so if it goes to plan so I've got my hair up because I don't want that dangling in any molten silver and I've liked - I'm wearing I'm wearing leggings and I've tied my dress up because yeah I don't want like a loose dress flapping around molten metal either so yeah I've taken precautions beforehand don't worry and I have cast metal many hundreds of times so yeah so yeah let's let's do it I'm excited okay so um I think I'm gonna do the little frozen Charlotte dolls head for a chain because I've already done a leg this is my aluminium casting ring the smallest one I have and as you can see I've used it quite a lot it's perfect size for small pendants and rings and things so I'm gonna fill that with sandy clay this is Petra bond clay because it's cheaper than Delft clay so some of this I'm gonna make a black mold because I only want to make half of the doll's head I don't wanna make the full thing because in solid silver that'll be quite chunky and I just want a quite a dainty necklace [Music] okay so I had to go and get a shirt because the midges are out and they're biting so I went and got a shirt and my rule because I forgot the rule and I just leveled off the bottom of the mold and compact it down as you saw the sound and I put a bit of talcum powder on baby powder and so the first mold it doesn't stick to the second mold didn't stick to the first and I've dusted away the excess sand from inside the thread because if you don't the to hobbs will stick together and you'll not be able to get them apart [Music] there we go now um it's time for putting in the dolls head and I was gonna fix up the little cracks and the chips on her nose but I thought I'm just gonna leave them because it's gonna add the the final casting a bit of character and it will actually look like it's actually casting a porcelain doll rather than not [Music] bad channels for the air to escape when the Moulton matters there are different ways of doing this business best way [Music] all right so got four decent-sized channels in laughs the air to escape of now I'm gonna try and take the head out hopefully without damaging anything Oh came out really well actually fancy a little impression so you can see that I'll zoom in she is not looking too bad so and now I am gonna make the channel or the sprue for the molten metal to be poured into the earth [Music] miggy's so I think I am ready to pull that now I'm going to put both sides together and then just pour the molten metal and now but we've got to melt it first so I'm gonna bring out my sand dish and this just means if any metal is spilt it lands in the sand and doesn't land on here and run all over the place so it's just for safety okay so I'm gonna melt this my crucible it's seen a lot of castings so I'm gonna melt some metal and here's a failed casting that I did I actually fail more than I succeed in my castings because they are a little bit complicated sometimes so they're all failed castings and I'm gonna re melt down this silver which is a scrap jewelry which is eco-friendly better from the environment so I'm gonna melt it back down I'm gonna pour into a mold but yeah I've got my butane torch yeah well actually I think it's butane it's quite a big chunk of silver so it should take several minutes to become molten [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm gonna do this which it's not hot well not it is very warm but not too hot not to touch let the crew spill cool down and their shares it's a success yep longer you wait the hotter it gets so I'm gonna flip this upside down and then I press from this brew side oh it's too hot I wasn't quick enough just and warms up and gets too hot so I'm gonna have to wait for a second for that to cool down like a strange virus you can see why I did it the way I did cuz it's got see you there the back of this brew is flat unlike the doll which is not flat it's a full head which is gonna work much better for a necklace okay so I've packed everything away and now I'm gonna go and saw the sprue of the back of the dolls head most of the works still left to do to be honest but I'm happy with that so far okay well I'll see you upstairs okay so I'm gonna start Saul right now and we use these wax to lubricate the blade before cutting just protects your blade and to make things easier as well [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm gonna stop for dinner now because it's getting quite late so that's why I've done so far I've polished the back and the sides and she's just about ready to have the jump ring like this jump ring and bail sold it to be made into a necklace so I'll see you tomorrow so it's been a few days since I was working on the little frozen Charlotte head and because I was waiting for some supplies through the post and some veils and some new jump rings as well and look got some new standing / polishing pads and we really like these they're really great the jewelry polishing jewelry and yeah old ones new ones so let's get started okay so the Sun is quite bright and shiny today so there's a lot of contrast and sorry about her but all right now I'm gonna use Briony polishing pads and I'm gonna start off the hiya grit how about the back of the pendant nice and smooth [Music] there we go [Music] googe's and shiny perfect for now as the final part will be at the end in the tumbler I put the mail on the top of the head there so I'm just gonna sand the Sun file just a little a little spot on the top of the head there just so the solder can be used to the silver properly [Music] okaythat's there [Music] the bail okay I think that's just about where I want it so I'm gonna start using the mediums all that just apply a tiny it [Music] pretty much [Music] need to get the head nice and hot first [Music] [Music] [Applause] once you quenched it you can touch it straight away despite it being red-hot second [Music] so now I'm gonna solder on one of these little bails [Music] [Music] [Music] easy [Music] [Music] so I think she is pretty much done picking these are pickling salts and they are used to remove all the oxidization so white [Music] I'm pretty much free so what I'm going to do with it now is give her a scrub with a word [Music] I'm gonna give her a scrub with a brass brush [Music] mouth filling [Music] we don't [Music] is he--oh shiny shoes now [Music] [Music] ok so now we're going to oxidize her [Music] that is it oxidized [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so there she is you can kind of see why I designed to put the oxidase Asian on my cuz it really does bring out the details in her hair and her eyes just details Jen already he's dumped out really well [Music] so I've got some enamel here I'm cold and resin enamel so what I'm gonna try and do have this Bora idea of trying to put some little red lips on her or maybe some little red cheeks or something because and what these dolls actually have little rosy cheeks and pink lips [Music] okay I'm gonna heat up and melt that Hummel okay so I'm gonna heat er up [Music] got no rosy cheeks Oh kids that oh wow that's cute have to admit okay I'm gonna give her the last little polish with the polishing cloth I'm really happy with her so far well she's pretty much finished now but I'm gonna give her a quick little polish with this and then um we'll take her outside and do a little mini photo shoot which will be really cute so you can see her in better detail well here it is the finished thing little Charlotte and her rosy cheeks me and my rosy cheeks [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] my goodness yes this is our laptop by wait I actually can't wait to edit on the other laptop Alex couldn't play back what she just edited without it just juddering yeah stopping actually it was it's and it was a nightmare to use that hideous thing down there look at it oh look at the size of them I know it's gonna hurt Wow thank you so much thank you thank you I don't know what to say we just don't know what's wrong and just don't
