I followed my dreams and open an antique store to have adventures and spend time as a family sometimes you have to climb a mountain and open some new doors to find the treasures inside this is our life this is our adventure and this is curiosity Inc hello again everybody and welcome back to another adventure I'm Alex with curiosity Inc and today I am headed out there is a fellow who has an estate that he's looking to clear I hear that it's packed full of antiques we're gonna go and check it out I am trying to bring a whole bunch of furniture to the antique auction that's happening in about a week or two so the goal was not to bring it to the shop but really just to kind of transfer from this place to another so I've rented a moving van and I've got my wife with me special guests today so my wife and helpers so yeah not only did she put up with me buying this stuff but she's helping me like furniture today all right honey Hey yeah so lucky me that I ever heard of help me today so we're gonna head over to this house check it out and make our way through the fog gets really foggy this morning and see what there is let's go check it out and we are starting in the garage this morning there is a lot to go through even in this one space and as I pan around I can see all kinds of old furniture and even what looks to be a motorcycle so I'm gonna have to spend a little bit more time trying to see if we can dig that out and see what kind of condition it's in but I have a feeling that my wife might have to be patient this morning is it's gonna take a while to dig through this stuff so let's have a look around and see if we can get access to that bike it's a quite the variety of stuff in here well this is a from Rainbow Bridge it doesn't look so sparkly fresh anymore [Music] I should take this couple these covers out of here first washed and these I'll make sure we put this up well after a lot of work we finally got the bike free the wheels moved and it's time to go inside the house to see what's in there is this a print that's the real painting yeah it's a real painting this is the original frames that they had with them that's awesome very nice so yeah nice little whirligig and when it spins she does her washing her hands go up and down it's pretty neat [Music] as you can see the truck is really starting to fill up we've got everything from stacking lawyers bookcases to antique cabinets desks and even cathedral windows out of an old Catholic Church there's a few of those so lots more to load it's a lot of work as usual you never expect you open up an antique store you're gonna be basically a mover but there is a lot of neat stuff and lots more to go and they also had a really cool old Volkswagen van it's a bay window van but it is the Westphalia so it's got the pop top on it and the kitchen cabinets interior is not too bad it's got a little bit of rust on it but nothing that can't be fixed and its original paint so at least you know what you're looking at with the van like this so that's coming home in a few days started off really cold this morning so I wore my leather jacket now it's boiling hot so I'm kind of regretting this decision but uh you know no time to go home and change now so we're gonna load up the last of it here and get on our way we also got some interesting prints here as well these are called Samson Matthew prints there's Syria graphs like silk screens this one is by an artist named Emily Carr who of course is very closely associated with the group of seven and Melissa is finding room for everything in the van thank you sweetie for work in the van so we can fit everything in I've dropped Melissa off at the house because it's just after lunch and the kids are getting hungry so she wanted to be there for the kids so thanks Melissa if you're watching for your help this morning I have to drop a couple things off in my store and then the rest of its going straight to the auction house so a lot more work for me to do um and I miss having my wife with me it was nice to have company so I guess I'll be riding solo for the rest of this so we have a lot of stuff here at the auction now including this cylinder roll-top desk just have to leave them the keys for it so we don't lose those stained glass windows out of a Cathedral antique filing cabinets so an awful lot of furniture and I had to bring in another piece to this little piece of wood here is the corner off of this lawyers bookcase goes right up there so I want to make sure it's complete for when it goes through often but by far I think the thing I like the most are these grates area grafts or silk screens done just after World War two of some very famous Canadian artists like I said including Emily our who's Fred Haynes jwg McDonald and these are all 40s and 50s fantastic pieces and just iconic images they're not small either they're about three feet by four feet so they're a good size they're definitely poster sized so I'm loving them uh there's a 70 total here so just going through them and kind of getting an idea about what different types of art we have in here but I feel almost like a gallery some of these I know this is uh those are ships there's some beautiful beautiful silk screens so it's gonna take me a while to go through all this but I can see already there's just some lovely art so very glad that I pulled these out of the basement today - there was so much stuff in fact I had to make a second trip to get everything back home the couple was absolutely fantastic and if you're watching I appreciate that you watch our videos they actually are subscribers on our YouTube channel and that's how they found found us so you never know sometimes you watch one of these shows and then a guy shows up but you're hosted by your stop but I really am happy with the Samsun Matthew prints the AJ castings in group of seven items and if you're unfamiliar with your group of seven all you'd be a little history with the group of seven or sometimes known as the Algonquin School was a group of Canadian landscape artists who painted mainly from 1920 to 33 some famous artists include Lauren Harris a.y Jackson jeh McDonald AJ Caston and of course Emily Carr and Tom Thompson who are associated as well original oil paintings such as this 1926 piece by Lauren Harris called mountain forms can be worth substantial money this one sold at auction few years ago for 9.5 million dollars so even finding early original silk screens in some original drawings that are signed can potentially have good value as well and I'm excited to find out what's really important to know about these pieces if they were an offering from Sampson Mathews really to the people of Canada during the war time to get some important Canadian images and an important Canadian artists out there are many artists in here that were part of the group of seven this one here that I have is an a why Jackson I'll see if I can get the reflection off there we go so you can see the striking color is the the use of color the the landscape the perspective is just stunning these were really the first time that some artists became very well-known now some had been known before and we're gaining in popularity but this really put them on the map and these images are not just a regular print or a poster they are a serie graph which is hand applied layers of oil through silkscreen process in many different layers and they are just remarkable now it would be very expensive to reproduce these today you know you'd have to get the rights you'd have to pay somebody to stand there and AJ Qasim was part of the group of seven he was also one of the the fellows that worked with Sampson Matthews to make these prints in the first place so important piece of Canadian history they would have been in important buildings like banks government offices and they only ran you know let's say 50 to 100 of each one so they were a fairly limited run there was no real great record-keeping done at that time but they don't surface all that off and if you look online you'll find done you know one or two here or there I have 80 so I've got a pretty big collection here and it's really difficult to assess the value of something like this I was able to purchase these in a lot and I'm hoping by sending these off to auction which is the plan that we'll be able to recoup some money and hopefully make a little bit of profit on it as well and there were some originals in the slot as well like these sketches by Gautier this one is by Harold Beaumont it's entitled to make a 1933 that's a watercolor original piece another original sketch by walking in Gautier I believe that time you would say his first name this is 1932 and we have an AJ casting here on original Sampson Matthew frame and madding and that would have been probably 1930s or 40s as well and I'm so thrilled that I had a chance to acquire these pieces and to own them and now to get them off to a new home with people who will love them frame them and put them up in their house we don't get a chance like this very often especially to get original group of seven pieces here in Canada they're very important artists and very well known and internationally known as well as you can see the artwork on them is phenomenal and there's many reasons why somebody would want these in their home I hope we do okay at auction right now it's a guessing game but it would sure be nice to take a dent out of our alignment credit that we have open from opening up the shop but I'm optimistic as I always am and my glass is forever half-full so thank you so much for tuning in again on another episode again I'm Alex with curiosity
