[Music] hello everyone welcome back and shut my name's Kevin today we're going to be building a copper rose I recently did one for my mother at Christmastime and a friend's wife has demanded one of her hosts so we're gonna go down a family visit I'll go ahead and put together another one this time I figured I would record it and I don't you guys know how I built the previous one and you know how it went it's really not all that difficult takes a little bit of time but it's really not too bad now Jim Bollinger over a do write fab he recently did one and that really kind of inspired me to look into it a little bit he actually drew it out kind of free and and very simple designs I'm not an artist I couldn't draw a circle if I had to so I was looking for a little input and I found a really cool article on instructables.com and it had a nifty little file with pretty little flowers that you can cut out all on your own and save me from having to doodle up something and make it look really scary so one of them just kind of combined some of the techniques that Jim had over on the right fan and combined what I found on the instructables and Wow so I've put a link to both of those pages down in the thingy below and well you know take a look at their stuff take a look at this and see what fits you best so it's kind of what it's all about on these things the first step in this process is to get this this pattern we printed off Instructables cut out all the bits but to save you a little bit of time and to keep from going into doing what we need to do next is clear off the flammable stuff because now we get to play with fire and we're going to be poor to these things to get them hot and drop them in the water to quench it so let's get that one started [Music] there we are once you've chopped up an eel ugly I don't worry about it we'll get this stuff cleaned up here in a little bit didn't forget to mention that I like my gray scotch-brite pads for this but before we get into making a little pretty we'll clean this thing up but we are going to go through one more annealing process so I get anything seated we're down sides of the pipe so makes a pretty good pretty good cut cutting lines so this stuff cuts so much easier once it's an eel [Music] now with one-inch pipe for the largest of the flowers it's a little tight it doesn't quite fit but on a rose the largest outside petals tend to curl way down we're gonna be folding the edges of these down anyway so the deficiency of that we've got here isn't we're going to make a difference when you cut these out go ahead and cut down the lines to the center don't cut the center obviously but that way when you're holding it in place you can lift it up and trace the trace down the sides of the individual petals so we're going to go ahead and get started on that just get in here lift one up and just trace it out [Music] okay folks get you in here around on this side so you sit a little bit better what's going on we've got all of the hull shapes cutouts and more or less deep bird kind of cleaned up here and again it's not gonna be a soft cuddly teddy bear nobody's gonna be hugging this thing it's still made out of metal but you know it's not it's not gonna bite you either now you'll notice that all of them all four of these have the same twist to them you've got to separate these petals to be able to get in here to clean these edges out and you need to kind of twist it in this manner toward there all look like little blue propellers because when you go to mash it flat chances are some of these petals are going to start overlapping when they lay down and you need to remember that we're going to be twisting them up and in when we stand it up and kind of a kind of a rotation here so if this pedals on top of this one you're gonna have trouble getting this one to twist up and go into form it's it's a real pain to let's try to deal with when it's all when you're actually putting the flower together and bending them with them and the last step so taking a take heed pay attention to that and now when you mash them flat again watch watch how they're laying down to make sure that that they are not going to overlap the wrong way now some folks have been wondering [Music] this thing is here and that's because the the folks that that put together that the template that we used for those petals suggested using just a little Jimmy little pry bar to go in and make the texture on the petals and I was kind of braid out a couple of different ideas here and show you a couple different ways of doing this this one you just keep whacking away it ends up making just a series of lines across there and that's that's great you can do kind of the same thing with no wacky wacky the fingers here little cleaner then then what the the primer goes personally I prefer the cross beam of the body hammer [Music] start whacking this thing it gives a little bit different pattern to it unlike that a little bit more than these it's not as harsh it's a little more it looks you know these sharp sharp hard creases are not normally found in plants in nature it looks a little out of place it could look really nice when it's done but it looks a little out of place to me you know do what you like me I'm gonna stick with the body hammer and that's the way I'm gonna run it so we'll grab one and just start in get a little guy here we can get in there about all it takes just try to get them to where they're line coming out a way to the center and it'll work out pretty good and that just gives it a little bit of texture and doesn't have to be perfect but if you look at roses well they're not perfect so we'll grab another one and just mash it flat again pay attention to to the way that petals are land down and see here they're overlapping pretty heavily that'll be alright the way that we're doing it so now what I was showing earlier if you had if this was reversed you'd have a real hard time getting this one to fold over the top of that one it's it's not worth the hassle so I just watched the way they lay down in there so this one will get done in the same way we'll just sorry about blowing out speakers like that but it doesn't need to be real deep in here I do like the texture on the inside some like on the outside but put it on the inside it'll work out pretty well so we're gonna do the rest of them like that but to save a little bit of time what we do with this with the sepal it's just kind of line up right down the center punch and you can find that Center again with with a big chisel you can see there's a line right down the center of that now that the chisels formed that's gonna be the little little seam right down the middle of the leave and we'll make a little angle one here we'll do it this way so you can see what's going on and I'm not blocking with my hand here and then there that's about all we really need to do with the sepal now when we clean it up a little bit of scotch brite will come out it'll look real nice so that's what we're gonna do let me get the rest of this done and I'll bring you back okay you see we got all the Wacken done just random textures put in there there's no real rhyme or reason to it it's just I tried to get them all going out away from Center towards the edge the they're all gonna be folded around a little differently so Bri now the sepal what's good as is I did go over the lines I drew the rest of them out with a black sharpie and then when you whack it with the chisel you'll notice you'll actually catch a little bit of ink in there and it kind of highlights the lines the veins and the rose petals are a little more subtle so I'm not going to try to bring them out if anything I want them to blend in and be just subtle texture now the sepal is good which upsets that little guy outside but the rest of these they've all been work hardened with this with all the Wacken going on here and it's gonna be a real pain about to try to get the tight little bends that we need such now this little guy and this was going to be been up pretty tight too so there were there work hardened so at this point I'm going to go ahead and I nail them again and it'll go pretty quickly because well there's a lot less less copper now and we'll just cook them once more drop them in the never to be used in the kitchen again pot without guns floating on it and will be will be good to go so let's get this nasty grammars again and start the process [Music] alright here we are after quenching those things again it really ugly them up but that's nothing that can't be fixed up with a little bit of scotch brite it just the nasties just wipe away in a few strokes a little of it will get caught down in the in the texture but for the most part there we go make sure you get the backs of them so the so the parts it does get singing will still look pretty good too alright we're back and I've got everything cleaned up you can see that the texture has caught so the tarnish basically from the from the cooking of this stuff and it'll add a little bit to it I couldn't I kind of liked that they live any friends live in kind of a we call it a rustic area they kind of live out a little bit used to be some horse properties or whatnot and you've got kind of a country vibe going on so I think this will work out really well and they're in their place now just gonna look at is the seat full is okay as far as the center of it goes what the rest of these are kind of up a little bit and would do here to take care of that bring in the master and the punch I take this just scrap avoiding see it's the one I used to to set the to punch the holes in them and I just line it up and I said see pool looks okay you use the big punch and it's down my necks wound up on top of it you can see I had done that once but I decided to come back do it all over again after taking all the texture out so here we it lines that up nicely now when you stack everything else up on top you can see it dished so when you start stacking there's gonna be a big gap but don't line up the petals go ahead and offset them a little bit because again there's not a whole heck of a lot of symmetry in the roses again it's starting to kind of look like a flower but they put a lot of stem and to do that well you're in my way so they move the camera and get reset for that there we go [Music] there we go I think we did all right with that for a hack like me it's a little bulging up but it'll be okay once we stack everything on there so I'll clean this up with a little bit of the scotch brite once it cools down and it'll go away and look just fine so let's give this thing a moment to cool get it flipped around I just gotta wiped it off with the with the scotch brite just to kind of clean it up a little bit okay at this point we lost the audio to the recording stack your pedals up but make sure that they're gonna be blended weld where you don't have the fat pedals hanging out over the little shorter pedals on the down below and if they're not all going to be in perfect alignment you'll want that overlap in there so they've got some a little more coverage and it looks a little more appropriate when you wrapping it up then just pean the end of it in and if it gets a little off-center just kind of whack it back the other way and you'll be just fine with the deal okay now you got to start on the inner most set of pedals and bend them pull up and out a little bit but make sure you get that twist to where the leading edge of it is really wrapped in tight and then kind of spirals out from there and they'll just kind of form a little spiral there in the middle and it'll look pretty good [Music] and sometimes you will need a little help getting them up some so I just use a little file to kind of pry it up a little bit try to get my pliers in here you can get a straight back you might need little help tighten it at all upsets but we'll use a larger flowers for just to kind of squeeze it in a little bit and get them all nice and tight now when you start working on the second row of petals you're gonna bring them up and keep a little bit of that spiral drawing but it obviously won't be nearly as tight as the first row that you did and each successive row of petals that you do will get a little bit easier to bend because they're very larger you can get a hold of them [Music] as I'm bringing them in I'll make sure that they're not too tight and they do kind of flare out a little towards the sides and aren't really crowding the center of it too much [Music] it's really starting to look like Andros at this point now and start working on the third row of petals bring them up kind of like you did the second ones and this is where you start to run into a little bit of problems if the pedals aren't twisted properly if they didn't lay down right and you have to kind of dig one petal out from underneath the one beside it now on these you you want the tops of them to start to flare out a little the rows are starting to open up and getting a little bit more volume in there it's getting bigger so start to curl just the tips just a little bit and it begins to look like the petals as they've relaxed as they go outwards on a rose now if you start the fourth layer they will be fairly easy to bend up and you can see the roses got a little bit of movement to it that's fine it just lets your position and wherever you want now as you're bringing those up the spiral is going to be getting a little looser but you need to start bending the tops of the petals out a little bit as you get the the curl on the top where you like it take the edges of the petals the sides of them and roll them back a little bit to redo get that nice almost squared off shape to the petals [Music] okay I lost the audio as well as the video here towards the very end of this as you get to the largest set of pedals you need to kind of put a bend in them and curve the pedal up instead of just bending it straight out and then you'll get the sides of it folded back and the very tip of it folded back and make it into pretty much a triangular shape when it comes time to do the sepal let it come out from the Rose a little bit and they give it a gradual bend down and just let the tips face straight down and that'll look great okay good enough call it a wrap sorry I was running out of camera battery when I was betting the last of the petals up they'd get the sepal bent down I kind of gradual bends and comes up with them kinda like a rose before leaving in the natural state I don't want to put any kind of clear coat on or anything like that for a living like this and should it when it does begin to tarnish she can take it dip it in some and some tarnex or something like that will remove it but trying to get down inside all these tiny little crevices and there would be pretty tough so there you go one copper rose give it a shot it's takes no time but it's really not that difficult to do so thanks so much we'll see you next time [Music]
