what's up guys welcome back to another episode of outdoor chef life I'm taco and today we're on this beautiful lake up in the mountains in northern california and i just bought a fly rod we're gonna try to catch a fish on the fly rod I also have my spinning rod as well whom I swim in here later on see if we can find any crawfish Joss and I are just doing some camping we got here yesterday and we didn't film yesterday we were just kind of walking around the lake taking a little hike ice cast das sourdough bread from kami shout-out to kami awesome maybe an egg while I was getting the fly rod warmed up no breakfast so we go up here yesterday beautiful place never been here before but this place is pretty nice I'm just gonna try to find a river that I can fish on because I really want to test the fly rod in a river nothing what try fishing here a little bit longer because I do see some fish jumping on the surface this Lake here is so clear the visibility is insane later on we'll dive in and show you how clear it is this is my third time fly-fishing but actually first time doing it by myself without somebody there kind of coaching me the first time was with Johnny up in the Sierras that was a fun trip I caught my personal best it's really technical you gotta like pay attention to every single cast or else you get tangled alright this one wasn't bad hopefully later on with a final river to fly fishing I don't know I don't really know how to fly fish in the lake if I'm just supposed to leave it there or what I guess so yeah we came to this little spot now and Jocelyn's fishing a worm and I'm gonna try my fly fishing still go my little box of flies let me show you my little sit up here so I have my five weight fly rod rod and reel got this dry fly on top it's actually you can see it's actually I tied on to the hook another leader with this little black one and this one's gonna sink down whereas the other one will flow so this is gonna dip this one will act like a little indicator actually I think this is a dry fly to you shoot no no no alright guys why didn't catch any fish today this is our campground right here at the bear box it's our water it's our tent right here from REI we've had this tent for like four years it's been pretty good passage - got a nice Rock right here - chill on ya so that's our campsite now you just got back from fishing but I think we're gonna go for swim in the lake I didn't see any signs of crawfish but hopefully we can find some crawfish but we're gonna go swimming in the lake right now ready yeah let's go beautiful this water the waters really nice but there's no crawfish nothing oh man well we decided we're just gonna hang out on the lake and have a beer and some snacks lucky day IPA Central Coast brewing shout out to Mack from Central Coast send me a couple beers yeah cheers bro thank you so if you're wondering what Lake wrap this lake is called Loon Lake up near Tahoe and it's a really beautiful lake it's like kind of like a mini version of Tahoe so the clarity of the water just like Tahoe really nice but the fishing isn't so great here but we're just gonna kick back enjoy the beers and enjoy the view [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well we're out of beer time to head back well guys we didn't catch anything today but good thing I still have some of my salmon from the other day so we're gonna smoke that salmon today joseline loves starting the fire so I always let her do it she only starts the fire right oh here we go fires going now alright let's go over here prep my salmon you just got some of the tail pieces when you smoked the salmon it's you it's better to use the the leaner cuts to make a little salt and sugar here you add one one handful of salt one handful of sugar mix that up you just put it all over the salmon there you go yeah we go from both sides this one has a skin on it's all good this one doesn't have a skin on you leave that for 30 minutes to an hour I'm just gonna put it in this bowl just leave it like that every time Jocelin I go camping we make these potatoes that are so good so easy it's delicious I'll show you how we do that and you can do any kind of potatoes you can use the big ones you can use small ones we've got these little guys today I guess I'll just do one big batch I'll just do like that and I do like to poke a few holes in the potatoes you can just use a fork to you know I've use a knife safer that way three garlic cloves just rough chop it doesn't have to be small you can just keep it nice and chunky and just put that in the potatoes and we'll put that on there as well boom salt and I have butter here go any kind of seasoning with like chili peppers and garlic and basil or time anything like that I have this right here it's a mixture who knows what's in there there's chili flakes I think there's time in there there's garlic in there yeah generous generous amount that's a generous amount of seasoning Dan we're just gonna wrap this whole thing up now you see the moisture escaping so we're gonna wash that off now and then we'll smoke it everyone just gonna do a short smoke cuz we can eat this completely raw it's perfectly safe since it's been frozen and this is how it looks after a little darker orange I'm gonna create a little makeshift smoker again this sides gonna do my smoker and this side will be my grill yeah that'll work fine I think you know we're camping right now it doesn't have to be perfect either soy sauce sesame oil 1 2 seasoning whatever you like chili place the garlic basil thyme just be generous with the seasoning extra chili flakes looks like my spicy one two tablespoons of brown sugar and mix this up right here and you have the best either marinade or sauce that you can put on the whatever you grill so we have some Cornish hen last night and this is the sauce I put on there and it was so delicious and I put this on this pear juice to it and it was amazing well the whole leg came off that's hot so tender mm-hmm slow right amount of spice to it so good I need to try this Kindle crispy mmm that's so good so whatever you like put this on anything it will turn out amazing this is Applewood right here I'm gonna just throw it on just create some smoke there and I can smoke the salmon at the same time just like though leave it on half half on the heat half off the heat there you go yeah there's smoke coming out and we'll smoke this mmm only for like 15 minutes I think I don't want it to cook much I just wanted to have a little bit of smoky flavor Cheers okay guys getting this is from oh yeah that's bright this from their bottle we're always drinking beer bottle so if you guys want to support small breweries look for this label right here right see that label right there it says independent craft all the small breweries have that label so if you want to support your local breweries or the small breweries in general make sure it has that label if it doesn't have that label it's probably owned by one of the bigger companies like Budweiser or something like that the wind changed directions so now all the smoke is going the other way there you go yeah with my potatoes alright let's take it off I don't want oh it feels good though very nice oily skin we're gonna grill it just gonna place them right on alright cool is dancing dancing salmon skin this salmon skin doesn't need to be grill for too long just like a few minutes salmon skin this done I'm just kind of put it back in this bag and I'm gonna put seasoning in it yeah we're gonna season this up I don't think he needs to much sees me smoked paprika yeah let's go some basil in there look at that oh that looks good this piece in particular looks a little salty but take a little bit of that salt ah that's alright tastes like chips we're gonna sauce up this corner here just using a rosemary as my brush yeah so we decided to bring our own girl just to avoid the Camino Grill you know there's a rustic plate of camp food potatoes corn and smoked salmon wasn't really going for anything fancy I was just like all right let me just put this on a plate and this is it ah that's all I have more potatoes I have more potatoes that didn't fit on the plate yeah well we didn't catch any fish but I have my salmon still in the salmon it's so good to know I'm just gonna use my fingers the potato mm-hmm perfect I'm telling you these potatoes we do it every time when we go camping and it's always amazing so if you go camping make these potatoes and make that sauce to that sauce is good on everything oh yeah these ones might be a little bit cooked what I tried this one the rest yeah these are good this one's a mocha potato it's funny you can make camp who's so good and that's one of our favorite things about camping is the food we make because you can just focus you know on the food and you can just make it delicious that fire-roasted everything just makes everything taste better so right mm-hmm the whole day even the corn that's cooked perfectly mm-hmm guys the salmon guys lightly smoked salmon and yet again I'm so glad I caught that salmon well so wouldn't have dinner tonight so this camera that I'm running right now it's new Sony camera it's called the VZ one I believe there's a VZ one something like that but it has this product focus feature where I hold anything up to it and I focus so fast it's so cool beer beer it's so fast their focus is so fast I love you you do well I think that's gonna wrap it up for tonight and we're just gonna enjoy the rest of these yeah salamander not gecko look at him so cool huh I never seen one this big and there he goes it goes [Music] I got one first first cast look at that let's check them out yeah I so small look at that beautiful wild rainbow trout whoa Mia what my hands here sorry buddy I'm gonna let you go I'm gonna let you go I'm gonna just take that hook out of you know look at that guy's look at how beautiful that is Wow gorgeous rainbow trout there you go no skunk on the fly rod mm-hmm so I was just fishing down here this pocket now let me try the shallower part over there little upstream I'm gonna hide behind this rock I think let's see if this will land it right on here we go here we go here we go I seem coming to it coming to it oh-ho he just I send it right back to him I got spooked by the line don't 1.1 tiny tiny guy but the same size there years all right click I get big ok see you later there he goes beautiful fish oh yeah got another one
