[Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] we are fond of logos schools businesses sports teams clubs all use logos to help the greater community recognize who they are these logos also let members know they belong to this group or organization today ash wednesday we will receive a very special logo from the church during mass a cross of ashes will be placed upon our foreheads this cross reminds us we are united in our faith it reminds us that we are human and we sometimes fail it reminds us that we are beginning our lenten journey and that for the next 40 days we can prepare ourselves for easter through prayer fasting and almsgiving it reminds us that we belong to the catholic church as we begin our mass this morning i invite you to stand and join in singing our opening hymn found on the cover of the order of worship [Music] we rise again from ashes from the good we fail to do please rise again [Music] is [Music] the dreams [Music] an offering [Music] again [Music] turn [Music] takes me through the father who made us like himself [Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning everyone lord father we gather in the lord's name in the name of the father and to the son and of the holy spirit may the grace and the peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with all of you we begin our lenten journey we start with ashes and as we heard in our introduction the logo is that we are christ and we sign ourselves with the sign of the cross that mark us as the lord jesus christ marks each and every one of us to follow in his footsteps and so as we prepare our hearts we pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up the battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with the weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have seen [Music] have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense o wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow and cleanse me from all of my seed be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned my offenses truly i know them and my sins are always before me against you alone have i sinned o lord what is evil in your sight i have done [Music] [Music] lord for we have sinned [Music] create in me a clean heart oh god put your steadfast spirit in my soul cast me not away from your presence o lord and take not your spirit [Music] [Music] give back to me the joy of your salvation let your willing spirit bear me up and i shall teach your way to the ones who have wandered and bring them all home to your side be merciful oh lord [Music] lord for we have seen a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord [Music] [Music] praise to you lord jesus king of endless glory savior of the world savior of the world [Music] race to you lord jesus king of endless glory savior of the world save of the world eve today you hear his voice [Music] lord jesus the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your arms giving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners and so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ as we begin this wonderful season of lent i want to focus on those three areas i'm going to start with prayer prayer is essential for our relationship with god that's how we talk to god we talk to god through prayer and i know for the students here we're going to be having a special prayer on friday what is that prayer that we're going to celebrate at 2 o'clock in the afternoon go ahead the stations of the cross and the stations are on that wall over there you get to journey with jesus and jesus wants us to journey with him but he we also experience the sadness that he feels and also the difficulty along that journey because he falls a number of times he's bleeding and he's suffering and so we see that suffering because that suffering is for us he's suffering for us so we enter into that prayer so that we get closer to jesus and really understand his life and what he did for each and every one of us and ultimately he dies for us but it's always good to have that moment of prayer so that we continue to journey every single friday we're going to do that and every single friday we pray a little more and we get a little closer to jesus and it helps us to grow i'm going to also invite you and and the adults with us pick a favorite prayer what's your favorite prayer do you have a favorite prayer maybe you want to find a favorite prayer and during this season pray it daily what would it be maybe a prayer to saint joseph or maybe a prayer to the blessed mother but it's we add a nice prayer and then we think of god and we want to be closer to jesus every single day so that single prayer that you may recite every day that you get up or before you go to bed helps us along our journey of lent to get closer to jesus so that's prayer and there are many other opportunities i know for the adults here we have these wonderful reflection books and i believe there are also reflection books for the kids as well but that helps us it focuses us along the journey to get closer and understand the great gift that jesus gave us his life now let's take a look at fasting why do we fast well i'm going to tell you fasting means that we're going to be aware of what we like and what we eat what we do some of us like watching a certain program well guess what during this period of lent we may fast from that program we may say well i'm not going to watch that program i'm going to do it so that i'm mindful of jesus and what he did for us so fasting besides food we can fast from certain things that maybe we like to do because we like to fill ourselves up we like to satisfy ourselves oh i have just one big mac when i can have two big macs but the reality of the matter is during this season we want to refrain from eating so much and you know why we make room then for jesus what how is jesus going to feed us what is jesus going to provide for us maybe through the stations of the cross through your prayer you'll come to understand jesus even more and that fills us up so we may take some time and fast from something to be mindful that during the season we can do without we don't always have to get what we want then there's alms giving and that's always thinking of the others and here at blessed sacrament we have share sunday we always try to be mindful of others and that is going to be important during the season of lent what can we do for others now what can you do for some of your classmates or for your teacher what can you do for the greater community maybe in your classrooms you'll say you know what we're going to think about the people of ukraine all of those people who are displaced from their homes and we want to pray for them maybe we want to think about those who are homeless here in the city of milwaukee and what can we do and maybe uh your teachers will have some idea of almsgiving is giving something to the other what can we do for someone else so i'm going to plant some seeds today and ask some of you to think about how can i be mindful of the others who are in need in fact today our collection is going to go for the refugees and those who have been displaced in ukraine and we want to be mindful of them and and their their terrible situation so whether we pray for them whether we can offer some assistance to them that's what we want to do that's what this season is about thinking about how we can grow closer to jesus and how we can grow closer to one another now each of you are going to be signed with ashes and so that's going to be the next i'm going to say the prayer and then we will distribute ashes my dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penance oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out your grace and your blessing upon these your servants and upon the marks of the ashes that they will receive as they follow the lenten observance then they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son and we ask this through christ our lord amen do you need a card [Music] sign us with ashes merciful god children of justice to [Music] sign us with ashes merciful god mark us and make us your [Music] children of justice [Music] and make us your own [Music] surely you alone can save us you pay our price with precious blood reaching through your great compassion up your people with love sign us with ashes mercy for god children of just us to dust we returned side us with ashes mercy forgot [Music] make us yours [Music] you give us [Music] you bless sign us with merciful god mark us and make us [Music] you break the bonds [Music] racing till we walk uprightly [Music] you bolster our hope once again sign us with ashes mercy for god children of dust has [Music] make us [Music] so [Music] us with ashes [Music] the shame merciful god mark us and make us [Music] refine us [Music] you give us grace [Music] a sacrifice [Music] us and make us you fill our dust with holy breath [Music] you rise from the ashes of death [Music] return sign us with ashes merciful god mark us and make us [Music] sign us with ashes merciful lord children [Music] does not make us yours [Music] let us stand and let us present our needs to the lord and ask the lord to hear us please respond lord hear our prayer for church leaders especially our holy father pope francis may they guide the faithful around the world closer to god during the season of lent we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for government leaders may they recognize the value of mercy and compassion in their work and may they strive for peace not war love not hate we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our local community leaders may they work to meet the needs of those that they our prayer for the petitions in the parish prayer box for the candles that we light for those who have died and those who mourn their loss and for the petitions held in the hearts of those gathered here and of our online viewers we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for today's mass intention gil reinhardt we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving god we have started our lenten journey help us to be faithful to almsgiving prayer and fasting as we lift these prayers today and always we ask this through christ our lord [Music] come back to me [Music] with all your heart [Music] trees [Music] long have i waited for your coming home [Music] the wilderness will lead you [Music] integrity and just with tenderness you shall go long have i waited for your coming o [Music] to life [Music] you shall sleep secure with please [Music] deeply [Music] this pray now my brothers and sisters that my offering and yours will be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns for ever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your grace your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with the angels and the archangels we sing to him of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] oh [Music] [Music] are full of your glory [Music] [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his fashion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when the supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave the chalice to his disciples and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jerome our archbishop with all the clergy and all of you god's holy people and we remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] and so we gather our hearts this day as we pray together our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to all of your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance to your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with all of you let us turn to each other and offer a sign of peace peace with you thank you trying peace be with you peace be with you god bless both of you [Music] love you take away the sins of the world [Music] you take away the sins of the world mercy on us [Music] the sins of the world [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ bring us to life everlasting [Music] we hold for the death of the lord [Music] with jesus [Music] what we were people afraid lost [Music] life [Music] we hold the death of the lord [Music] with jesus [Music] something which we have known something we've what we have seen with our eyes this we have heard life [Music] of the lord [Music] now we remain with jesus [Music] we are the presence of god [Music] for to live with our lord we must die with the lord [Music] with jesus [Music] he chose to give up himself he came our bread broken that we might leave me [Music] he holds the death of the lord [Music] we are the presence of god [Music] [Music] for to live with the lord we must die we hold the death of the lord [Music] with jesus [Music] so [Music] and let us pray may the sacrament that we have received sustain us oh lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord amen let us bow down our heads and pray for god's blessing pour out a spirit of compulsion o god on those who bow before your majesty and by your mercy may their merit and the reward that they will receive do you promise as we do penance through christ our lord amen and so we turn to the blessed mother and we pray for her intercession as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb
