[Music] the lord became my protector he brought me out to a place of freedom he saved me because he delighted in me the lord became my protector he brought me out to a place of freedom he saved me because he delighted in me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit may the grace and the peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with all of you as we gather today we take a moment and we acknowledge that we're in need of god's love and mercy to touch our hearts and to heal us of our sin you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you plead for us at god the father's right hand who intercedes for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting and let us pray grant us o lord that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice and troubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the first letter of saint peter beloved concerning the salvation of your souls the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and investigated it investigating the time and circumstances that the spirit of christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for christ and the glories to follow them it was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the good news to you through the holy spirit sent from heaven things into which angels longed to look therefore gird up the loins of your mind live soberly and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of jesus christ like obedient children do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but as he who called you is holy be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct for it is written be holy because i am holy the word of the lord the lord has shown his salvation to the nations the lord has shown his salvation to the nations sing a new song to the lord for he has worked wonders his right hand and his holy arm have brought salvation the lord has shown his salvation to the nations [Music] the lord has made known his salvation has shown his justice he has remembered his truth and love for the house of israel the lord has shown his salvation to the nations all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our god shout to the lord all the earth ring up your joy [Music] the lord has shown his salvation to the nations hallelujah [Music] hallelujah blessed are you father lord of heaven and earth you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom hallelujah [Music] hallelujah the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark peter began to say to jesus we have given up everything and followed you jesus said amen i say to you there is no one who has given up house or brother or sister or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age house and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and eternal life in the age to come but many that are first will be last and the last will be first the gospel of the lord this morning i hear a little frustration in peter's voice lord we've given up everything to follow you and what are we getting that's what i hear and what are we getting out of this and sometimes i think that's where we are that's why that last line is really important the first will be last and the last will be first so the lord says we are going to receive something he doesn't give us a time he doesn't give us an amount he doesn't tell us what it's going to look like or what it'll be but he tells us that we are going to get something and the reality of the matter is it always reminds me of people who say i don't get anything out of mass is that why we're here to get something out of mass or are we here to put something into mass so it's a perspective and it's a perspective that we have to evaluate and in fact it's a perfect perspective to evaluate as we go into lent we are giving up something we learn to fast we learn alms giving we learn extra time to pray so in lent there is a sense of giving up but it's meant for us to give up and to be without to really focus on what is the treasure that we're after isn't it jesus isn't it following in his footsteps and understanding him daily so in peter's frustration he's coming from that worldly side that well what do i get out of this if i'm giving it up and jesus is challenging him not from a worldly perspective but from a spiritual perspective what you're giving up is you're gaining eternal life you're gaining something deeper a deeper spiritual relationship with the lord a deeper spiritual understanding in your own life that's why we have fasting almsgiving and prayer but today what i want you to do is i want you to think is this where i come from sometimes gee i'm always giving i'm always doing something i'm always expected to do something or i'm always asked to do something and are we coming from the perspective and what do i get from it what am i getting out of this and if that's the spot that we are then i guess we're going to be last but if we're doing it simply because yes there is a deepening i can offer something i can go into my closets i can go into my house and offer lots of gifts that i don't use and i that i have that i can offer to someone yes i can take that extra time and bring to share sunday i can write out that check for the saint vincent de paul society or some other institution that offers charity and help to those who are in need and i guess if we're expecting something back then we're missing the whole idea of what we're doing it's not about what we're going to get back it's about doing for the sake of doing as about lifting up those crosses that we have and it's about following in the footsteps of jesus so today we can be challenged and maybe we find ourselves i know i do sometimes frustrated a little bit about all of the stuff that i'm doing and maybe not seeing any benefit coming from it maybe i'm not meant to see the benefit maybe the benefit is coming maybe i just have to surrender and do what i've been asked to do just simply for the sake of the kingdom of god and for jesus so today as we are the next where we're one day away from beginning that wonderful lenten journey maybe today we just pause and say how am i going to enter into this lenten season what type of attitude will i embrace and want to embrace let us stand and pray as we gather today and we have been called to do many things let us see that in doing and offering and giving that we do it on the on the behalf of jesus we pray to the lord let us pray for the sick and those who have asked for our prayers those who are in need of healing and anyone who has uh certainly suffered because of any type of sickness that the lord's healing hand will be upon them we pray to the lord and let us also pray for those who are poor and those who struggle to make ends meet we pray to the lord i'm very mindful of those who struggle with addictions and that the that they wrestle with those addictions but the lord will be there to strengthen them as they face their addictions we pray to the lord and i'd like to pray for a family friend barbara pickard um she's been diagnosed with cancer and that the lord will touch her life and be with her at this time we pray to the lord and for your prayers for whom or for what shall we pray we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer loving god you touch our lives in so many ways as we approach you jesus help us to always be mindful of offering ourselves and what we do to you as we lift these prayers today and always we ask this through christ our lord [Music] no blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this bread that we offer you which earth is given and human hands have made let it become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine that we offer you fruit of the vine the work of human hands let it become for us our spiritual drink praying on my brothers and sisters that my offering and yours will be acceptable to god the almighty father oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant us as a source of merit may also help us in obtaining merit's reward through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in goodness you created man and when he was justly condemned in mercy you redeemed him through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs and humble praise as we acclaim holy holy lord god of hosts have heaven and earth [Music] highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when the supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave the chalice to his disciples and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith claim your death and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking to the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jerome our archbishop with all the clergy and all of you god's holy people and we remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever so we gather our hearts this day as we pray together our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and say from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to all of your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance to your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with all of you so let us turn to one another and offer each other a sign of peace peace be with you peace thank you [Music] away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ bring us to life everlasting the body [Music] the father the body behold i am with you always even to the end of the age says the lord behold i am with you always even to the end of the age says the lord and let us pray nourished by your saving gifts we beseech your mercy lord that by the same sacrament with which you feed us in this present age you make us partakers of life eternal
