in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you i welcome you to this ash wednesday mass the beginning of lent the beginning of god's grace reaching out to us we have days where we can search the lord seek the lord 40 days in the desert 40 days to prepare ourselves for the coming of not the coming of jesus for the crucifixion of jesus jesus died for us today i'm wearing purple this is a sign of repentance it's ash wednesday but i don't have ashes to distribute for you unfortunately it is not yet virtually possible but it is also it is possible to prepare ourselves it's possible to repent it's possible to turn our hearts to the lord so as we begin this time of repentance as we approach the foot of the cross this ash wednesday this beginning of lent let us call to mind our sins lord we lay ourselves down at the foot of the cross lord have mercy we ask for forgiveness for all of the sins of our life christ have mercy and lord teach us to reach out to others in love and in in sorrow lord have mercy and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up the battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever reading from the prophet joel now now it is the lord who speaks come back to me with all your heart fasting weeping and mourning let your hearts be broken not your garments torn turn to the lord your god again for he is all tenderness and compassion slow to anger rich in graciousness and ready to relent who knows if he will not turn again will not relent will not leave a blessing as he passes oblation and levation for the lord your god sound the trumpet in zion order a fast proclaim a solemn assembly call the people together summon the community assemble the elders gather the children even the infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his bedroom and the bride her alcove between vestibule and altar let the priests the ministers of the lord lament let them say spare your people lord do not make your heritage a thing of shame a byword for the nations why should it be said amongst the nations where is their god then the lord jealous on behalf of his land took pity on his people this is the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense awash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin be merciful o lord for we have sinned have sinned my offenses truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done be merciful oh lord for we have sinned a pure heart create for me oh god put a steadfast spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence nor deprive me of your holy spirit be merciful oh lord for we have seen have sinned give me again the joy of your help with a spirit of favor sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise be merciful o lord for we have sinned second reading a reading from the letter a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ it is esta it is as though god were appealing through us and the appeal that we make in christ's name is be reconciled to god for our sake god made the sinless one into sin so that in him we might become the goodness of god as his fellow workers we beg you once again to not neglect the grace of god that you have received for he says at the favorable time i have listened to you on the day of salvation i came to your help well now is the favorable time this is a day of salvation this is the word of the lord thanks be to god praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory if today you hear his voice hearted not your hearts praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before people to attract their notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win people's admiration i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing your arms giving must be in secret and your father who sees all things that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in synagogues at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut the door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces and to let people know that they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you fast put gel on your hair and wash your face and so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who is in heaven and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord it seems like the year has just begun i can't believe we're already at the beginning of lent but i do remember always the beginning of the year i train i like to go to the gym and when i'm training january is always a very curious time because we get a lot of people who are walking to the gym who have never walked into the gym before you see people there who all different shapes and different sizes come in and they actually don't know what to do how to do things they think they know because they've watched a couple of youtube videos but you could see them struggling you could see them like you could tell that they don't really belong or maybe they haven't been there for a while well i often think of these people and you see the other people who who are sort of um who have been going to the gym for a while they flex their muscles they're showing off they're wearing their short sleeves they're lifting even heavier weights to show off in front of these new people almost to make these people feel uncomfortable to the point where it confirms in them who have struggled to enter into this gym for the first time feel like hey hold on i really don't know anything now this is how we feel sometimes when we enter into a church this is how we feel many people feel when they walk into the doors of our churches that we're praying we're standing sitting kneeling doing our prayers and people walk into the church and they don't really know what to do or even ourselves sometimes we see other people who are holy and people who have their life together but we are in a mess and we feel like we don't belong well this is i think advent this holy week this whole holy time beginning with ash wednesday this is an opportunity for us to do our boot camp to get ourselves ready 40 days to make sure that we do fit in now fitting in is not about doing exercises right it's not about doing things right but it's about knowing god's mercy and love knowing that god has called us to love him but in order to for us to recognize this we need to consciously be aware of god's presence in god's pursuit of us we need to be aware and we need to act on that by stopping praying making time extra effort over these 40 days to love jesus and we do this in three ways we do this through prayer we do this through repentance asking for forgiveness for our sins but also we do it through and that includes fasting but another thing is also through arms giving through to giving to the poor this is a time where we are called to become holier we're called to do this spiritual boot camp things that we haven't done for a while or maybe never did before this is our opportunity to work hard so that we can fit in but knowing god's mercy knowing god's love knowing how difficult it is to fit in we won't be like those who are flexing their muscles and trying to make people feel uncomfortable but when we're in the gym we we are there we're in in the church and we're with god we are there in humility because we realize how god has called us from a mess to become his beautiful message god loves you this is your opportunity today to begin these next 40 days do something special also frg ministry is offering an a a retreat on holy week that's another opportunity for us to to deepen our faith do a retreat reach out to god cry out to a god of mercy to make you the saint that you're called to be we serve a god who loves us a god who gave us life a god who calls us to repentance a god who calls us to respond to his love and we respond by bringing our prayers to the lord i'm not going to pray anything now is your time to bring your prayers to the lord ask the lord for whatever you need and trust that he's going to answer so it's just in a moment of silence if you want to pray out loud if you want to even pray in your heart you can do that or you can just be still open your hands and say god you know all of my needs i place them at your cross and so lord we ask you to receive these prayers as we pray through the intercession of mary who also brings our petitions to the lord hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou amongst women and blessed the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness who have received the wine we are for you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink so pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church regard with favor oh lord we pray the offering we set up on this sacred altar that bestowing on us your pardon our oblations may give honor to your name through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you have given your children a sacred time for the renewing and the purifying of their hearts that freed from the disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world as to hold rather to the things that endure and so with all the angels we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks he broke it then he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope with shane our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever and lord jesus christ who set your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sin but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other a sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i'm not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed the body blood of christ bring me to everlasting let us pray an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to
