is good evening welcome to the community of blessed sacrament as we begin our lenten journey with this ash wednesday liturgy please join us in singing our processional hymn we rise again from ashes [Music] so [Music] is [Music] me [Music] is [Music] [Music] me is [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] god [Music] from the holy spirit [Music] we begin with actions as christian serves so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with him a reading a reading from the book of prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libertations for the lord your god blow the trumpets in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is our god then the lord was stirred and concerned for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful lord for we have sinned [Music] [Music] lord for we have sinned have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion o wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow and cleanse me from all of my sins [Music] [Music] lord for [Music] and my sins are always before me against you lord have i sinned oh lord what is evil in your sight i have done be blessed be merciful [Music] your clean heart oh god put your sad fast spirit in my soul cast me night away from your present soul lord and take not your spirit from me be blessed [Music] [Music] give back to me the joy of your salvation let your willing spirit bear me up and i shall teach your way to the ones who have wondered and bring them all home to your side be merciful be merciful lord for we have seen [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord free school savior of the world [Music] yes if today you hear his horse [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your arms giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go into your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord r as we begin this wonderful lenten season we're given an opportunity to really improve our relationship with the lord in three different ways prayer which i want to begin with and then fasting and almsgiving prayer is that communication that we develop and that relationship that we have with the lord but now what i want to really do is say as much as we like to speak our prayers and we have our favorite prayers in our prayer book sometimes the best type of prayer is just to be quiet quieting ourselves because there is going to be plenty of opportunity to have those prayer books that we're offering you or the opportunity to pray the stations which is important but it's equally important to even quiet yourself we're not used to quiet we usually are doers and we're usually involved in all kinds of activities to quiet ourselves is something that we're not used to and that may be even turning off the television a lot of us like white noise that noise that whether having some music in the background or the television on i'm asking now just silence all of that now for some of us that can be a challenge i know sometimes we're in the car and we like to listen to the no news and sometimes they're our favorite songs our favorite station and now i'm asking you during this season turn that all off see what that's like don't have any noise any type of distraction and just be quiet sometimes that can be really difficult for us because we are so used to listening to the news or listening to some type of music that's the whole purpose of lent is to take you out of your zone that you usually are in and place you in a place now that you become vulnerable something new and a new experience for all of us to really enter into that can be a little unnerving so i'm going to ask you in your own prayer time to really take some time and make sure that there's quiet a part of our prayer time fasting fasting can come in many different ways we always think of food but fasting really gets at the fact that we always want something we always are seeking something we want to fill ourselves and that may be with a game that we have it may be uh we we may be the type of people that like to go out and spend money shopping we may be uh a gamblers we may we like to fill our time and ourselves with all of this stimulus outside stimulus and i always i always say this and this is the truth even for me i can have a list that i'm going into the store and it seems like that basket just fills up because there's a sale everyone loves a sale oh that's on sale and we fill up the basket but you know something we don't always need it and so i'm inviting us to really ask what do we fill our lives with what are we always seeking after and even taking some time from fa with fasting to go into our closets and i i love this take the hangers and turn them around take the hangers and turn them around because now use the clothes that you're that you're used to using and find out how many hangers are still in the same spot and take them out and take them to goodwill or to saint vincent de paul empty those full closets and look at what we really use and what we really have because sometimes what happens is we have we fill our closets full full full but we don't empty them and this is a great way of fasting we are now taking what we don't use and offering it to someone who could use it it's a wonderful wonderful exercise it really is and quite honestly you'll feel better because now you're going through and you're finding oh now i have a little more space in my closet but that doesn't mean you go fill it up but it gives you the feeling of you know something i haven't worn those shirts in a long time you know and and for some of us including myself it's like that goes back to college days that should have been gone a long time ago but you know we do that so this is a great opportunity for fasting besides our food is to look at other areas that we can refrain from and a lot of it is sacrifice that's we're not used to that word but we sacrifice a bit of really letting go and saying i don't really need this and and even with our food note how often we crave and we're ready to sit in front of the television with the popcorn and the doritos and it's not just half the bag it's the whole bag and so you say to yourself wait a minute maybe i would be far better off not doing that so we're going to be challenged a bit to look at fasting during this time of uh lent and then almsgiving what can we give because we have this tendency again to fill our lives what can we offer others what uh different agencies or what different opportunities are there we have share sunday here we have baking for the saint vincent de paul society we have also the prayer shawls and the prayer angels knitting so now what we're doing is almsgiving becomes a moment what can we give or offer to others you know that that we can give and and and come from this sense of you know what i have plenty now i can offer something to other folks so this is a great opportunity to really look through embrace the silence look at fasting for ourselves and what can we fast from because we all have cravings and then alms giving what can we offer what can we do to help others whether it's something that we create or something that we have that we can give to others so that they too will receive something and it's a very powerful season to really look at ourselves and say what changes do i have to make and now we're going to receive ashes and so let's give a moment [Music] and so we pray dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads as a sign of penance o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing upon all of your servants gathered here and mark them with these ashes as they follow the lenten observances that they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son and we ask this through christ our lord [Music] so [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] ruling is [Music] [Music] is [Music] oh peace [Music] us with my heart [Music] ashes [Music] um [Music] us [Music] right [Music] children our blessings [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] me [Music] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] foreign [Music] so [Music] and so we present the lord with our needs that they may guide the faithful around the world closer to god during this season of lent we pray to the lord for government leaders may they recognize the value of mercy and compassion in their work and may they strive for peace and not war love and not hate we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for our local community may they work to meet the needs of those they serve especially the less fortunate we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our return to the sacrament of absolution and reconciliation we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who are signed with ashes today may they turn back to god during this season of lent we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us gathered here today may we be faithful to prayer fasting and almsgiving so that we may experience the grace and love of god in our daily lives we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the petitions in the prayer box for the candles that we light for those who have died and those who mourn their loss and for the petitions held in the hearts of all of us gathered here and of our online viewers we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for tonight's mass intention which is for chuck salerno we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving god as you guide us through this lenten season help us to honor you by prayer almsgiving and fasting as we lift these prayers tonight and always we ask this through christ our lord [Music] so [Music] me [Music] is [Music] me [Music] is [Music] is oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] faithfulness [Music] me [Music] pray now my brothers and sisters that my offering and yours will be acceptable to god the almighty father as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures being cleansed from our sins and may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of mind made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with the angels and the archangels we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim oh [Music] yes [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when the supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave the chalice to his disciples and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope jerome our archbishop with all the clergy and all of you god's holy people and we remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life i may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] oh [Music] and so we pray together our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to all of your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance to your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with all of you [Music] thank you [Music] so [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ bring us to life everlasting uh [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] with jesus [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] something we talked [Music] is [Music] deep in our hearts [Music] jesus he is [Music] okay [Music] is [Music] [Applause] me [Music] is [Music] my [Music] oh [Music] jesus [Music] so [Music] so [Music] just two reminders this friday we will have our fish fry but we also have stations of the cross and they're offered twice at 2 p.m with the children and at 6 00 pm with deacon paul and deacon matthew so please take advantage of that moment of prayer with the stations of the cross and finally we have our prayer wall and the prayer wall is an opportunity for you to write a prayer or something that you'd like to change or something that you need and you stick it between the rocks or the crevices of the wall and then you are remembered throughout the lenten season and then concluding the lenten season we're going to have a ritual in which we'll take all of those prayers and we'll burn them and then that way all of that goes up to the father so take advantage of these moments in which you may want to pray for someone or a change in your life or something that's going on and just place it between the crevices of the rocks let us stand and pray may the sacrament that we have received sustain us o lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy and we ask this through christ our lord we turn to the blessed mother and we pray for her intercession as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord thou among is and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen our lady of justice and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen the mass has ended go in peace to love and serve the lord
