oh thank you good afternoon good afternoon welcome to the community of blessed sacrament as we gather for the first sunday of lent our guest presider for this weekend is father leon martin please join in singing our processional hymn again we keep this solemn fast [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] foreign oh [Music] is good afternoon to this is mentioned everyone name is father leon with the palatine fathers we begin in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the fellowship of the holy spirit be with you all with your spirit we begin officially the season of lent today and we have for our reflection of jesus who has been in the desert and he has been praying for many days and he's coming back and he meets our quotes friend the devil and so we'll go from there when we get to that part of the readings and so the readings are always reminding us to think of our lives again as journeying with jesus to calvary and the share in the paschal mystery the easter mysteries let us prepare our hearts now to celebrate these sacred mysteries and so we say together i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive our sins and bring us all to everlasting life amen [Music] [Music] christian his own let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observance of holy lent that we may grow an understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord our god the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] okay with me as lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray [Music] i [Music] you dwell in the shelter of the lord most high who abide in the shadow of our god say to the lord my refuge and fortress the god to [Music] be [Music] come near [Music] he will never forsake you he will watching over your life [Music] [Music] [Music] to the lord live secure in his lawn lifting those who trust on the lord he will never forsake you he will bring you salvation and joy me [Music] [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters why does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord right praise to you lord jesus king of endless glory savior of the world savior of the world [Music] [Music] but we live by the words oh [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for his written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord uh as we begin our lenten season with words of fasting and prayer and of charity right away we have this gospel passage of jesus being confronted with himself his uh own temptations he's a human being like us in all things but sin and so this uh gospel tends to uh say to us that the grace of god is hope for us to move beyond our temptations to uh the light and the life of the lord and we certainly pray for each one of us during this lenten season that the lord may help us to be open to the grace and the friendship of god when we begin with fasting in our day we don't have many times when we are fasting so it's a little hard to know some of the ramifications of it at least for me the times i have known it in recent years has been when i needed to have some kind of a test at the hospital and things like that and then i know what it is well i'm hungry but i'm not supposed to eat and well that water is pretty i'm not supposed to have water either you know things like that so you you get a little idea of what it is that goes on in our temptations just as in a sense like jesus it is said that the devil really kept after him and and finally it says well he kept after him uh but only a while he'll be back for him you know and that's like our lives we may be uh very good on one day about things that happen and to turn around things but the next day all of a sudden there's something that happens and we we feel bad after a while because we know that's not something we should have said as an example and so this uh lantern season reminds us that our fasting and our prayer and our charity go along with all of the things that we do during this time and we do them according to our age and circumstances uh just to mention that so people know the sense of the gospel is about this uh fasting i ran into a prayer that is given by pope francis and he entitles it do you want to fast this lent and he uses the image of fasting but he kind of says it in a different way he says fast from hurting words and say kind words fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude fast from anger and be filled with patience fast from pessimism and be filled with hope fast from worries and have trust in god fast from complaints contemplate simplicity fast from pressures and be prayerful fast from bitterness find your hearts filled with joy fast from selfishness and be compassionate fast from grudges and be reconciled fast from words be silent and listen so uh we know we have to do these kind of bodily and uh mental kind of logical and illogical things in life beyond our fasting but we can also see that fasting that is refraining from doing some of the things that we don't like doing that we are hurting ourselves or others that we want to fast from that we want to change that we want to find a new way of dealing with it we want to find a way that is most helpful for my life and for someone else's so yes we are called in our prayer in our fasting in our charity to make sure that the lord's likeness becomes fuller during these days so that during the holy week and the paschal mystery we may rejoice with the lord in the completion of his human venture let us rise and profess our faith i believe he came down from heaven by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and contained for our savior was crucified and rose at the end of the third day in accordance with the scripture he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the fathers who with of the father who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one old catholic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come opening our hearts to the needs of our brothers and sisters we pray now to our heavenly father that the church may be a beacon of hope as we embark on our lenten journey we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all who struggle and live with addictions may they know the presence of god and the support of others we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we might commit ourselves to our baptismal call this lenten season we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all men and women with moral weakness may they receive the grace to resist evil tactics we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we will face our own temptations with courage and never put god to the test we pray to the lord for the petitions on the parish prayer wall as we remember in a special way during this lent we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the petitions in the parish prayer box for the candles that we light for those who have died and those who mourn their loss and for the petitions held in the hearts of those gathered here and of our online viewers we pray to the lord r and for today's mass intentions for a special intention of sister test angle we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for rob doherty we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and let us remember the peoples of ukraine and the area as they struggle to respond to the terrible circumstances of war there and may all be blessed one day to live in peace we pray to the lord we pray to our loving mother hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art among women and blessed is the fruit of the bible jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen [Music] lead us not into oh is [Music] jesus christ [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh my gosh [Music] my brothers and sisters let us pray together that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept a sacrifice for the praise and glory of the god's name for our good and the good of all this holy church give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through jesus christ by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we join in the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is [Applause] [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and jerome our archbishop and all the clergy consecrated life and all the faithful remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god her husband saint joseph with the blessed apostles and all the saints saint vincent pilate who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] ah [Music] we pray with jesus who brings us to our loving father our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen and may the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] [Music] is [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed may the body and blood of christ keep us safe for
