lord be with you and with your spirit let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with the weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] lord for we have [Music] lord for me [Music] according to your mercy for love [Music] according to your great great passion blot out my transgressions wash me completely from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin [Music] lord for we have seen my transgressions truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you are lord have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done [Music] create up your heart for me o god green you are steadfast within me [Applause] do not cast me away from your prizes [Music] take note your holy spirit from me [Music] [Music] restore me the joy of your salvation sustain in me a willing spirit o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise [Music] us [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ king of handless glory [Music] jesus [Applause] is [Music] [Music] praise to your lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord [Music] as we gather together today on this holy day of ash wednesday a solemn observance in the church throughout the world i also want to invite you to pray and be in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are across the world now in the ukraine and at this very moment are struggling and suffering the the tragic consequences of war let us be with them lift them up to the lord put them in god's hands as we pray today in this holy place today is ash wednesday of course it's a day in which we face our own sinfulness and move towards repentance we're very keenly aware of what we have done and what we have failed to do it is a day in which we are conscious of sin it's also a day in which we face starkly our own mortality our own death with the ashes remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return it's also a day when we embrace the holy disciplines of lent that we heard about in today's gospel fasting giving up things prayer [Music] almsgiving and works of compassion for those who are in need this is a solemn day that begins a very special season of our lives we face our sin face our mortality embrace the disciplines of lent but realize too that this is also a day of promise and possibility it really is for when we acknowledge our sins and go before the lord honestly and sincerely we will hear the promise of his mercy and we have the possibility of his forgiveness when we face our mortality in faith we know that our death has been swallowed up in the power of the risen christ that is promise and possibility when we embrace the disciplines of lent of fasting prayer or almsgiving works of compassion we also find the promise and possibility of reorienting our lives realigning our priorities living in a new way so this day ash wednesday is certainly a serious day in the life of the church in our lives as well but in its own way as some of the prayers that we'll hear today suggest it's also a joyful day because embedded in all of this is promise and possibility and hope and so we move forward with our celebration in a spirit of deep gratitude dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will place on our heads in penitence oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord so so [Music] sorry [Music] [Music] your own [Music] reaching [Music] [Music] [Music] make us [Music] you give us [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] with [Music] make us [Music] yours is [Applause] [Music] revision [Music] and make us your own [Music] right [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] and make us yours [Music] so [Music] so so in faith and with trust we bring our needs to the lord for catholic parishes throughout the world may they be welcoming communities of repentance prayer and service in this lenten season we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for elected officials and policy makers may god form their work to uphold the dignity and sanctity of human life from conception through natural death let us pray to the lord r for peace in the world especially in ukraine may christ uphold and comfort all those who suffer from war and violence we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those in our parish preparing to be received into the church at easter may they come ever closer to christ during their lenten journey we pray to the lord [Music] for the sick the hospitalized and for all in need of our prayers may they be touched by the healing mercy and tenderness of christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have died in faith may they rejoice forever in their new life with god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our own intentions which we offer in the silence of our hearts in your great mercy lord hear and answer the prayers of your people who come before you in their need and with confidence in your love through christ our lord [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] faithfulness [Music] everyone is the time of grace has come the day of salvation faithfulness faithfulness [Music] pray my sisters and my brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat your lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you do not cease to spur us on to possess a more abundant life and being rich in mercy you constantly offer pardon and call on sinners to trust in your forgiveness alone never did you turn away from us and though time and time again we have broken your covenant you have bound to the human family to yourself through jesus christ your son our redeemer with a new bond of love so tight that it can never be undone even now you set before your people a time of grace and reconciliation and as they turn back to you in spirit you grant them hope in christ jesus and a desire to be of service to all while while they entrust themselves more fully to the holy spirit and so filled with wonder we extol the power of your love and proclaiming our joy at the salvation that comes from you we join in the heavenly hymn of countless hosts as without end we acclaim the is you are indeed holy oh lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself our holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out on them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your beloved son jesus christ in whom we too are your daughters and sons indeed though we were lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greater love for your son who alone is just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the paschal feast with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving thanks said the blessing broke the bread gave it to his disciple saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended and knowing he was about to reconcile all things in himself through the blood of his cross he took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving thanks gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our surest peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful and merciful god this sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father on those you unite to yourself by the sacrifice of your son and grant that by the power of the holy spirit as they partake of this one bread and one chalice they may be gathered into one body of christ who heals every division be pleased to keep us always in communion of mind and heart together with francis our pope and blaze our bishop help us to work together for the coming of your kingdom until the hour when we stand before you saints among the saints in the halls of heaven with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles and all the saints and with our deceased brothers and sisters whom we humbly commend to your mercy then freed at last from the wound of corruption and made fully into a new creation we shall sing to you with gladness the thanksgiving of christ who lives for all eternity through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever oh at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father [Music] uh deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the
