hey susie did you already set the book up the lectionary yes on a red ribbon and it should say prayer fast share or something like that because first grade will have their little sheets so i was just going to put it on them that's fine gospel for that's fine and it's john okay perfect so mr george is going to help you guys okay good morning and welcome to our ash wednesday mass during blind we use this time to blow closer to jesus we play and follow his example we thank god for his light love we celebrate god's forgiveness we help people who are sick humbly and lonely as we begin our lenten journey please take a silent moment to reflect upon your own personal sacrifice you will make during this holy time so francie huh hello you now oh my gosh you're here this is so awesome yeah just sit here good morning it's so exciting that we are all here together for the first time in almost two years and we are beginning the season of lent before we begin i want to go through a couple of the lenten music if you would quietly and quickly pull out your hymnals open to three zero eight b we're going to be singing the sanctus or the holy holy in latin and as you know the mass originated in the language of latin there was also some greek in the original mass so i'm going to just going to sing this through with you if you can just follow along and sing the best that you can the thing about latin is that for the most part it sounds like what it looks like in english it sounds like what it looks like there's a couple of words that will learn over lent but you're going to sing it how it looks so i'm going to sing it for you right now song twos [Music] song twos song to stone me news day [Music] shall see [Music] shall see [Music] it definitely sounds different than what we usually do and we're doing this to add to our season of lent now if you will quickly go to 313 b 313 b it's just a couple of pages away we're singing the lamb of god in latin it sounds like this on you stay quite holy spec [Music] misery reynolds [Music] on you stay if you know it sing it holy specia mundi [Music] and that translates lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace a couple of liturgical things for today that are definitely different than what we usually do today is ash wednesday and there will be the distribution of ashes this happens after father's homily so after father's homily the communion ministers who are scheduled today will come up here to where this black table is father will do a blessing over the ashes the communion ministers will sign each other with this formula turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel once that's finished the communion ministers will come down to the usual places where they stand for communion the procession will start with the front rows like we normally do so teachers if you could help that action happen you will come up right after the homily touch each other so the ashes were sprinkled on top of our heads this year since the pandemic has left up somewhat the communion ministers or ash ministers will be placing it a cross sign of the cross on the forehead all right take a moment put your hymnals back in their place take a moment to breathe and silence yourselves and now we begin good morning and welcome to our ash wednesday mass during the land we use this time to dwell closer to jesus we pray and follow his example we thank god for his great love we celebrate god's forgiveness we help people who are sick humbly and lonely as we begin our lenten journey please take a silent moment to reflect upon your own personal sacrifice you will make during this holy time please stand let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self restraints through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever be seated for our scripture readings a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord says this i'll tell you what it really means to worship the lord remove the chains who are prisoners who are chained unjustly free those who are abused share your food with everyone who is hungry share your home with the poor and homeless give close to those in need don't turn away your relatives then your light will shine like the downing sun and you will quickly be healed your honesty will protect you as you advance and the glory of the lord will offend you from behind then you will call for help and the lord will answer here i am don't oppress others or falsely accuse them or say cruel things the word of the lord be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i praise you who dwell in the shelter of the lord most high who abide in the shadow are god say to the lord my refuge and fortress the god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray no evil shall be for you no pain come near for the angel stand close by your side guarding you always and burying you gently watching over your life be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray cling to the lord live and secure in love god's love lifted i those who trust in god's name call on the lord who will never forsake you god will bring you salvation and joy be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord i pray [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Applause] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john jesus said to his disciples i tell you for certain that a grain of wheat that falls on the ground will never be more than one grain of wheat unless it dies but if it dies it will produce lots of wheats if you love your life you will lose it if you give it up in this world you will be given eternal life if you serve me you must go with me my servants will be with me wherever i am if you serve me my father will honor you the gospel of the lord jesus christ the toughest lenten resolution i ever made was to give up meat for all of lent i ate no meat one year the first couple of weeks i ate a lot of vegetarian burgers you can find them in the freezer section at the grocery store i had one almost every night for two weeks and i still don't ever want to see one again after that i moved on of cheese pizza which i also really love but if you think about it that isn't a very healthy diet and i realized at the end of lent that if i ever do that again i need to make a better plan to eat a balanced diet another year i gave up mumbling about other drivers and i added the challenge that if i did i find myself it was a quarter or 50 cents each time but in holy week i raised it to a dollar i gave the money to our saint vincent de paul the point of lent of course is to find our best selves by challenging ourselves we don't want it to be so difficult that we can't do it but we also don't want it to be so easy that it doesn't bring something forth from a suffering the point of it i think is to help us become who god really made us to be to get rid of all the things that get in the way of us being right with god and right with neighbor so lent really becomes an opportunity and an adventure and i'm really grateful because lent over the years has given me some of my greatest spiritual insights and some really good memories i remember sitting at the drive-thru in saint joseph at fazzoli's getting fettuccine alfredo for the tenth time and asking myself if it was really worth it i remember eating cheese pizza one night and thinking this might be the first time i haven't enjoyed pizza but the sacrifice teaches us something that there's a deeper strength in us than we realize something deeper god's grace always at work always available to us when we're hungry when we're tempted when we're longing for the things we've given up there's a strength more than our own available to us lent teaches us to recognize that strength and to lean on it dear friends in christ let us ask our father to bless these ashes which we will use as the mark of or repentance lord bless the sinner who asks for your forgiveness and bless all who receive these ashes may they keep this lenten season in preparation for the joy of easter we ask this through christ our lord amen um [Music] [Music] so so so [Music] [Music] every one of us needs god's help today and every day that follows on this lenten adventure and so we come to the lord with these petitions all response is lord he will appeal we pray for all god's people during lent we pray that we use this time for spiritual reflection and redemption we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the holy catholic church for you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me a mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and james our bishop and us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who just pass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] um [Music] chance behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb i'm not worthy
