hello there ladies and gentlemen this is part two of a three-part series of videos called a critique of Star Wars the last Jedi I don't waste your time so make sure you've seen part one and then we can get right back into it after the destruction of Luke Skywalker's character ray says to Luke that she will not fail him as kylo did and we transitioned back to the fleet the medical frigate runs out of fuel and slows to a basic stop compared to the Radice Ryan this is space this is not Earth momentum the first order is then in range to destroy the frigate we've been over why this doesn't make sense you know the whole chasing thing and the reason all of this is happening right now in this scene is to remind the audience that there is danger here because many viewers would be forgiven for thinking that nothing is actually happening in this chase an additional note here is that everyone was so convinced that tracking through hyperspace was strictly impossible the thing is we already went through Finn's memory being a plot hole but what about everyone else the movies have shown that you can track through hyperspace you just need to have a tracker onboard layer' knows this as it literally happened to her in Episode four easy you call that easy they're tracking us and at the same time she has a device on her wrist that will allow Rey to track her through any distance created by gold I don't know hyperspace this is information that everyone is fully aware of the possibility is always there but nobody wants to scan the ship for any devices no one assumes that maybe the first order captured Rey and is using her device to chase them there's no discussion they simply assume correctly the first order have a tracker that once it's in range of a visual on another ship can be used no matter where the enemy goes such incredible writing Admiral holder bids farewell to the pilot of the frigate who says that everyone has been evacuated before going up in flames why did he stay onboard why couldn't he be evacuated if there was piloting work needed to be done why not a droid why not an autopilot we never have answers for this Admiral holder then says to stay the course despite being six hours from fuel loss and causing massive amounts of stress for his subordinates / witnesses this destruction and at this point the audience is probably safe to assume that whole dough is actually performing sabotage on top of this the Radice is being chased by more than ten star destroyers the things release huge squadrons of TIE fighters send about 100 against the hangar lists defenseless ship and you will destroy it in fact please do that I actually want the first order to win at this point and they hobble themselves all the time to prevent that of course the fact that they have that many Thai fighters is never going to be addressed in this film the only argument I've heard of is that Hux wants to sadistically run them out until they lose fuel and any other option wouldn't interest him but the people making this argument forget that Huck said what is the point of all this if we can't blow up three tiny cruisers in response his subordinate explains why this is the case and then accepting of the compromise Huck says well keep up the barrage they won't last long Huck's wants them dead at all costs as soon as possible for his own satisfaction as well as the appeasement of Snoke there are so many additional methods many viewers have thought of that slipped the mind of the entire first order to destroy the Radice at this point it's simply humiliating for a lead writer on a multi-million dollar project to have missed every single one of these back at canto bite Finn and Rose are placed in their cell desperately wondering how they're going to reach a code breaker as well as how they're going to break out of prison only to discover that there is a competent code breaker in the cell with them he opens their cell door and walks out leaving the escape option for Finn and Rose I'm going to run through this set of scenes before talking about them the code breaker bumps into bb-8 as the droid takes down several guards with his coin machine gun the film makes a point to not be violent with this machine gun just damaging so all the guards fall over and go to sleep or they're tied up either way the point is that the guards have been taken out of the equation so do not ask questions about them we then see Finn and Rose have ended up in the pen for the horse like creatures and the film makes a point to show their wounds from the jockeys we saw them sustained earlier Rose releases them and convinces the child-labor to let them leave without incident by saying they fight for the resistance we then cut to a truly chaotic scene where Finn and Rose ride the horse animals to freedom while crashing through many structures all over Kanto bite it bears mentioning that these animals really do seem like ripoffs of The Last Guardian and that's unfortunate considering how recently that game was released then sentry helicopters chased them and say they're not going anywhere despite that Finn and Rose evade them successfully by splitting off from the main group unfortunately they both reached the cliff's edge and why is that they are trapped this is where Finn says it was worth it though to tear up that town make him hurt Rose responds by releasing the animal and saying now it's worth it moments later the codebreaker flies his ship to the cliff's edge and offers to rescue both of our heroes supply them a transport back to the fleet and help them break into the first order ship and take down the breaker in the breaker room for the tracker now let's rewind and break this down by character and then by plot Rose upon being released goes through a great width in to avoid the guards that came after the codebreaker met up with bb-8 so I guess these new guards just didn't see the code breaker nor were they alerted to bb-8 taking down the other four guards that's fine it's just interesting logistics I guess Rose then releases all of the animals and hopes to free them and comments on this being what makes the whole thing worth it whether or not they escaped this is so silly for a grown adult to say those creatures because of how cute and helpless they are are placed higher than human life by Rose she doesn't care to free the slave labor and provide them a better life with the resistance even though they are sympathetic to the cause and helped them with their plan not to mention that as we learn they are force sensitive meaning they could be a huge help once they've grown up though I suppose I don't know what force sensitive people even means anymore considering this how Ray has the force everyone has a force even Hux is that true I thought some people could have the force and some people I need to watch the movies again so everyone has the force now it isn't special by definition and with everyone super no one will be so yeah Rose doesn't have a second thought about the child slaves but this is even sillier due to the fact that Kanto bite is a planet filled with massive over-the-top security likely because the place makes a massive amount of money this means that all those animals that her infinite released will be captured and put back to work this is obvious as what else would happen when that many centuries are all chasing the targets when they've been shown to have weaponry they aren't shooting because they're trying to catch the animals and it's only a matter of time before they do which is dumb in itself by the way as they cause more damage to the world and grief to the guests that I'm sure they're worth but whatever what Rosa said here is akin to a child's outlook on animal cruelty just free them all let them return to their homes it is very likely that they can't even survive in the wild that they've been born and raised in captivity none of this is handled with a lick of realism and considering this series is being looked at as children's content despite the incredibly deep themes and the violence what is it that you think this teaches children exactly free animals no matter what stop mean things from happening if anything this will simply give children the wrong ideas moving on to Finn he is mostly along for Rosa's ride but he does comment on the destruction of the casino as a sort of revenge against the people who run the planet the rich war profiteers now this is actually childlike writing again a glossed view of the world with the bad guy losses because we broke his toys Finn accomplished the destruction of many areas of Kanto bite scaring and injuring citizens or tourists while labeling them all as evils he trampled through without any specific information on any of them only to claim the revenge she apparently sought what a great character an easy comparison for this is the sad realization that by destroying the Death Star Luke may have killed many innocent stormtroopers conscripted for the sole reason that they were unlucky and didn't believe in the empire at all who knows this is inevitably going to happen in order to stop this planet killer from completing its goals here though he's just rampaging through a random city on a planet under the justification that he doesn't like the people who live here what about the good people who are here what about the slave labor that may be saving these people as you trample through what about characters just like you and rose who are here to find something it is so interesting that a character who's established as unable to stomach humans suffering is so blunder ously carving through a complex filled with humans causing suffering it is almost like there is no care taken with the characters in this film but that's ridiculous right the carnage is apparently justified by some of these people having profited from war do you understand what that means they didn't cause the war they simply profited from it they aren't even strictly evil on the scale they're just opportunists besides that as a disgruntled sanitation worker for the first-order Finn should know well and good that when something is damaged in the Starkiller base or the supremacy the mess is not cleaned up by Snoke or Huck's or kylo Ren it would be sanitation engineering plumbing or a specific section of people that work perhaps a slave group real people like Finn clean up the messes that he's making right now and he should know this not to mention this may have no real effect on the rich horrible people of the world because they have insurance but what does that matter we know they have slave labor so they're just gonna use them thanks to Finn there's gonna be months and months of whipping and ridicule all so that he could feel better about these evil men who rule this world people feel like this whole sequence is a moment for Finn to grow and learn in relation to the evils in the world while in reality it was an embarrassing cavalcade of virtues being sprayed across a disconnected and clumsily constructed plotline Finn's new and idiotic attitude is the similar kind of attitude that many misguided activists have in our world today freeing animals only to scare or hurt them or ultimately return them to where they were found or they will destroy property in the name of hurting the one who's at the top of the chain when in reality they only heard the workers who fix it all this whole mess on Kanto bite is the foreground to the theme of wall property as getting richer and richer while the young defenseless children of the world are used as free labor for the planet the rich enjoy this is so unbelievably on-the-nose it's embarrassing why in Star Wars would they be using child labor instead of droids when the droids would be cheaper stronger faster and far more subservient this isn't Tatooine a distant desert planet filled with those who multiply out of poverty and engage in slavery from birth as a form of shelter and living but at least Tatooine did have droids - they were just low-quality this is a luxury casino planet filled - the galaxy's richest men and monsters why would they bother with anything but the finest most efficient technology I know why Ryan Johnson wanted you to know that these were very evil people and we should feel for the animals and the children the heart coming before the mind over all canto bites screams of a child's view of the world and it's injustice is the simplistic look at everything wrong with the world and why we should all change our behavior if canto byte were written correctly or at least with some sense of logic then the goal of the message still would have been animals children and the poor are all innocent and downtrodden while the rich men cleave their way through society with ease benefiting from the suffering of these demographics why might I ask is any of this in my Star Wars film many people say things like this film doesn't feel like Star Wars and this set of scenes would be where I point to when saying something similar what a disappointment of rushed and forced themes presented to the audience in the most ham-handed a naive way imaginable let's move on the Code Breaker as I said pops up to save them on the cliffs edge and somehow nobody on the security forces the entire planet thinks this is worth checking out like how do you miss this ship it pops up right next to the area that a bunch of dog horse racing animals escaped and whatever pogs the most accurate way to summarize this series of events is to say this the Code Breaker was apparently waiting in prison to free Finn and rose after they got jailed for a parking violation they didn't even know existed to then meet up with bb-8 and steal a hyperdrive enabled craft and then rescue them all from the cliff side only to then escort them back to the resistance fleet to break through the supremacy shields to crack through the security surrounding the breaker to disable the breaker to disable the tracker to allow the resistance fleet to escape all the while having bb-8 with him so the droid is still in the story there are so many conveniences in this entire thing that I am not actually going to break all of these things apart for you I'm just gonna say that little section that paragraph that I just read out made me genuinely wonder whether or not the writer was trolling us rabid fans have tried desperately to make sense of this one such argument is that the guy is clearly a drunk and he regularly ends up in prison but continuously escapes when there is a call to adventure it makes complete sense this is a kind of Stockholm Syndrome you deal with when people love something unconditionally they will simply spin the situation to make it about how the film has us think for ourselves it makes authors out of us and nothing else offers such an experience this is not true take anything with gaps in the plot and it can be done any mediocre or downright poorly written content has plenty of room for you to become its author and when you do it should be clear that when your own headcanon is the only thing preventing the film from falling apart entirely that you may be a little bit brainwashed I have absolutely done this in the past with things that I love and I've come to a similar realization when you scrape the bottom of the barrel for convenience to make your movie work and you have people invent backstories for your characters in order to have the actions on screen makes sense your writing is in dire need of help oh and I almost forgot there is an attempt to make the audience feel good outside of the reality of the situation they show a child who is muddied up and still engaged in slavery celebrating the release of the animals despite the fact that he'll likely get whippings for it but it made us feel good to see it right he even says no that was air escaping from the folds of his fat hmm you also get to see the animals roam free that's nice isn't it honestly I tend to block out canto bite when thinking of this film not because it's boring but because it's so horribly written on so many levels there's nothing that can save how rushed and childlike it all is I would in future beg Ryan Johnson to not only re scripts his work a few times but to hire a co-writer that shares his goals I understand that it was to be a soul project but some people are simply unprepared or incapable of handling that sort of scope or that pressure and canto bite is strong evidence of that because the problem isn't simply that the story is bad that what the characters are doing or what the plot is is awful it's that it's also being told in a very incompetent way though if you're at this point in my series I'm sure you've probably agree to that by now we then see Luke using the force to try and contact and he sees that she's in a coma this I would imagine is meant to act as a drive for decisions he will make in the future as well as letting us know that Luke is now connected with the force once again we then see Rey contacting kylo and she demands to know why he hated his father this very dramatic and serious scene is then undercut by the comedic outlook of kylo shirtless than Rey feels awkward looking at his half-naked body just another example of how difficult the script can be demanding answers for the death of han solo and then blushing at kylos abs how do you want us to feel Rian Rey then attempts to ask the question again while breaking up and getting very emotional and kylo shifts the conversation by telling Rey that she is made weak by a desperation for parents she made a surrogate out of han Solo and she is now attempting the same with Luke Skywalker kyla then asks her if Luke told it what happened in the past there is a reveal that Luke almost psychopathically tried to murder Ben in his sleep and he was stopped as Luke's character has been thoroughly assassinated already this wasn't a shock to see coming Luke Skywalker fails in an attempt to backstab and murder in cold blood his nephew while he slept what a misguided fanfiction that is on top of all this you know we've destroyed Luke Skywalker okay fine you hated the originals I understand that but you also ruined Finn's consistency a consistency that acted as a fundamental part of his character which was an interesting choice but it served a very emotionally charged view on society so I know why you did that at least but now you've provided the past of kylo Ren that tells us why he's a merciless bloodthirsty monster turns out Luke tried to kill him in his sleep is that it you're going to develop this at all did anything else happen as much as it can be very impactful as a moment in life to have your mentor try and kill you we hung on the moment for less than five seconds were there any additional events that turned him into the character we know from the character that Luke began to train could we get a few scenes showing the progression maybe a flashback to rescue this botched history or about Snoke where did he fit in is everything to do with kylo down to this alone perhaps I'm being too nosy and there will be more of this as we move through the film kylo speech there moves to talking about killing the past in order to discover who you are which is now referenced as a great ovation in our culture across the internet being echoed by many including boogie2988 as a life lesson and I can't for the life of me understand why kill the past is being looked at as forget the past or remove the past when kill means something very different people getting over things or cutting off that which hinders them is a fine concept but kylo Ren is a literal mass murdering blood lusting dog used by Snoke to cut down anyone and anything that opposes the regime yet people look deeply into what he is saying and come to the conclusion that murdering those who prevent your own growth is totally fair and interesting for him and it's genuinely good advice there is only one past I can see getting murdered in these movies and I suppose anyone who's welcome to make of the content what they will to mold it to their own lives to treat the word kill as something completely different but what I find hilarious is to see strict wisdom in an angsty sociopath desperate justification for cold-blooded murder it makes sense because something bad happened in my life and I want to move past it yes this is the kind of reassuring philosophy you get from fortune cookies to clarify this does not explain why he killed Han Solo as Han simply wanted to help and support him it just makes him seem as though he is attempting to justify his own monstrous activity his uncle tried to kill him therefore he kills half of his uncle's students and thousands of people across the galaxy including his own father all of this while failing to kill the uncle despite him being obsessed with just that this is bizarre as well as quick and boring in terms of a history for such a well portrayed character as kylo Ren what is appreciated however is kylo pointing out how weak of a character Rey is her only flaw is wanting to meet her parents and so she gets attached to fathering figures in her life other than that she barely has a fault to speak of the most unrelatable perfect amorphous blob of a character in the long history of film anyway she decides to check out the dark hole in the island that has been shown to potentially represent the dark side she is sucked down the hole by some kind of force that we assume is the force I mean they adds something new and ridiculous in every scene of this film so attempting to break it down and almost you know understand it is just embarrassing for myself Rey ends up deep in the water she swims to the top and to allege to climb up this is very disappointing in continuity again because as we saw earlier she has barely any experience with water rain or pools of any kind yet she's able to swim comfortably it looks like Ryan forgot that as well the sad fact is that it could have made for an interesting struggle a trial but she makes it through easily as she often does with any adversity she then enters a sort of Hall of Mirrors until she is able to ask the mirrors a question show me my parents please I don't know why ray thought she was able to talk to the wall of mirrors but it actually worked sort of the mirrors eventually show ray to herself and many speculate on what this means to me I assumed it meant that she won't find her identity through her parents only herself but you can make of that what you will we then jarringly cut back to her telling Kyla that she couldn't find answers to anything on this island it isn't explained how she escaped that cave she fell into through a small hole in the ceiling but why bother then after a very fast conversation with Kyllo she decides to reach out and tell him it's not too late there is a strong issue here the writer has decided that in the saga there is a simple idea that good people can become evil and evil people can become good stripped of the context and the meaningful details Luke wasn't trying to convince Darth Vader to leave the dark side until he found out he was his father Luke had an emotional investment in him as well as knowing that he was once a respected and powerful Jedi now we have Rey who has every reason to hate kylo trying to convince him to join the light for no other reason than Luke is a horrible man in all fairness to Daisy Ridley she actually emoted in a scene demanding to know why Han Solo died she cared about the man and kylo murdered him but now she doesn't care we've rushed through a seriously large amount of scenes in order to have Rey almost fall for kylo despite murdering countless amounts of innocents injuring the only people who protect her and killing her father figure this is so poorly constructed Luke then breaks her time with kylo by force pulling the entire roof off Rey's head she asks him if he tried to murder kylo and Luke demands that she leaves then Rey attacks Luke with his staff and he defends himself with a stick he rips off a nearby stick holder he disarms her but she counters with a lightsaber and Rey defeats Luke Skywalker in combat but Luke then reveals that he saw kylo causing insufferable amounts of pain to everyone he loves and so for a second thought he should kill kylo and then he decided not to out of shame Luke wasn't a psychopath he was simply old confused and pathetic and out from his shell erupted a confused and monstrous new and interesting character kylo Ren Rey then says kylo can still be good and Luke responds that this won't turn out the way she thinks it will but Rey is certain that if she goes to kylo she can turn him to the light Luke then says she shouldn't go and so Rey offers Luke his lightsaber and as he has written Luke turns away from it in shame and fear only to lie in the mud wet and alone with race standing above him victorious confident and ready to save the galaxy I used to be the orphan discovering hidden powers now we've got this one I used to be the hotshot impulsive x-wing fighter now we've got Oscar I used to be the one sneaking around enemy territory in disguise now we've got rose and thin the heroic Rey stands firm breaking out of the husk that is luke skywalker with all of his traits now poached and utilized for his self with no sense of it being something she earned there is something important to understand here people keep saying that these sorts of things are fine because the story is about Rey and not Luke the story is about kylo and not Luke I have something incredibly surprising to explain to you this film is a sequel the story is still running from all the way back in the Phantom Menace many people feel it should have ended with Episode six yet here we are so when you change Luke Skywalker you change his story too but more to the point this side steps the issue why can't you make strong characters without killing the old ones both literally and figuratively why can't these new people stand on their own without having to strike down the icons we all love first can you even remotely picture why people get so passionate about this nonsense regardless Rey immediately leaves for the first order fleet and Luke decides to burn down the Jedi Temple this is such a strange decision for him to make after the conversation he just had but before we have time to understand it the force ghost of Yoda makes an appearance Yoda performs Luke's test for him and burns down the tree with a lightning strike from above this one action creates a solid foundational argument for the difference in how people value rules within a story being told why does it matter that a ghost of a puppet is summoning lightning and laughing about it can't you simply enjoy the film why do you have to take this seriously well Star Wars the original trilogy explained force ghosts very sparingly we didn't even understand what they really were we don't even know if they're being seen only by the people viewing them we assumed that they couldn't do anything but talk to the person they were watching over the force ghosts would provide insight encouragement and advice for the journey of the character in reality I think they were just invented so that Alec Guinness could actually have a part in the second and third of the trilogy ultimately though they were very reserved in terms of power they didn't really have any but now they have power real power they have real influence on the world Yoda and obi-wan when speaking to each other in the originals had goals in mind they wanted to defeat the Empire they wanted to defeat the Sith so now that this power has been added to the Canon why don't they summon lightning to protect their loved ones and destroy their enemies why haven't they defeated the first order or the empire previously with these abilities why don't they hit people Yoda is shown to be able to do it why is this the first time we're seeing it in 8 episodes why does it come across like this is a child writing the script again the idea that a puppet ghost making lightning exploding a tree and making Luke shout no is a wonderful little idea but you need the voice in your head that says this is not going to play well on screen this is going to cause issues like I said co-writer script doctor law specialists they would have prevented this nonsense from happening Yoda then brings some much-needed levity to the film he talks about the more written and focused side of the Jedi and the fact that it's something that is okay to be forgotten or at the very least devalued as it does not contain anything that raid has not already possess I find this line hard to swallow if he's talking about the understanding of the force or the Jedi and the balance since she's only received half a singular lesson a lesson that was supposed to convince her not to be a Jedi but we realized that Yoda is actually referring to something else with this line Yoda then points out a flaw in Luke Skywalker he always looks to the horizon the future the possibilities instead of what's in front of him at the present this helps inform his mistakes with kylo but there is no saving the character at this point Luke says another clunk early written line very much like a defeated husk I was weak I was unwise as if one sentence from Yoda has completely changed Luke's hard set perspective that he developed over 30 years another example of how weak willed and shallow his character is this also raises the question of where's Yoda been while Luke has been spiraling into this new and interesting character over thirty years especially if it took one sentence to bring him back from his perspective where was Yoda when Kyla was created where were any of the force ghosts Yoda then says Luke needs to pass on what he is to Rey not just skill and mastery but failure too as failure is the best teacher this is a wonderful line that would have been so much more endearing in a well-written film unfortunately this is all people need to think about when discussing whether or not this film is well-written as a whole this is referenced everywhere and it hits my brain not to mention that Yoda says that he won't just need to pass on skill and mastery when the irony is that Rey is already well ahead of Luke in terms of skill with hand to hand and mastery of the force but whatever it sounded cool we then see the Code Breaker demanding that he negotiate a payment with Finn and rose finally when he wants roses necklace that linked with her sister obviously a very touching item but the codebreaker wanted the Haitian smelt material that it's apparently made from so he asked for it and Rose gives it to him despite Finn's protests Finn then discovers that the codebreakers stole the ship he is currently using finished shock despite having met this man in prison Finn says it's okay though because you stole from the bad to give to the good like Robin Hood they both then discover that the person who owned the ship they are currently in sold weaponry to both the resistance and the first order the Code Breaker explains that good and bad just words and all of this is just a machine this is probably one of the only moments where I am reminded that I'm watching a film written for children as this is such a basic concept for Finn to learn and change from the idea that morality is not binary that there is not one side and the other this concept is explored thoroughly in the original films as well as the pre without being is on the nose as this scene is at least when Palpatine says something similar to this it's because he's an evil person trying to groom Anakin which is a large portion of the prequels in terms of development if you wish to become a complete why is leader you must embrace a larger force a consistent theme is that of people who are good turning bad and vice versa making controversial decisions or enacting a principle or policy that has repercussions that echo far further than they could imagine placing a blurry line between the preconceived notions of good versus bad the point is that the other films left it as a theme while this film literally has a character spell it out for you good evil just words this method is rushed and it's some super lazy writing as opposed to showing the audience why a statement like this would be true if they were to think about it which I imagine is the purpose of a theme not to just say it out loud which is terrible like I said that it's far more akin to writing a children's story with a moral that has to be clear as for the rest of the themes of this film we shall cover them at the end so in full the Code Breaker says of the war between the perceived good and bad is all a machine just for the others to profit off which again is neat in sentiment but are you seriously trying to recontextualize the entire conflict over the eight films into a constant war machine that others maintain in order to make money are you just going to ignore that Palpatine was the orchestrator of war in the prequels and in the OT the Empire were trying to crush a small rebellion that got extremely lucky and killed Palpatine which meant the Empire lost their head and thus lost their direction it's not like war profiteers were keeping it going it ran regardless of them the machine as he refers to it was a consistent battle between two sides that had their pros and cons and end games neither side cared if someone on the outside wanted it to continue because it didn't not to mention that the Trade Federation created their own armies and the Republic ordered clones from Kamino on top of that if continuing the machine to profit was their only purpose then they didn't do a good job of it when the Republic or the Empire rained for their respective amounts of time but not only that their scene is played as though it's a reveal that the resistance isn't truly good and the first order isn't truly bad it's more of a conflict of two different perspectives of the same reality this is non since the empire back in the original trilogy ruled with an iron fist the work that the rebellion did managed to free the galaxy from their stranglehold and created a rule of peace for however long that lasted they even say that the Imperial Senate has been dissolved in Episode four now that there is no Council the regional governors control their own systems under fear the Empire has the death star and no one will dare oppose them while it's functional there are clear teams of villains and heroes in terms of morality with individuals crossing the blurred line it's not confusing or murky in the grand scheme you save a theme like that for the individual characters and their respective conflicts trying to convince me that the resistance has an element of evil within them when they're being chased all over the galaxy for the crime of being alive is not going to work cassian Andals opening blast to an ally said more than any line about morality could war is causing good people to do desperate and bad things hell why not have a trilogy with the Empire was doing the opposite of casseon vaguely good things in aid of bringing the Empire back talk about the reason why the Empire was actually good for the stability of the galaxy besides do you actually think the Empire thought of themselves as morally good when they nuked a planet that was peaceful just to torture somebody you're far too trusting on top of that do you think the first order thinks of themselves as morally good when they mow down innocent villages or nuke several planets at once themes are so great because they sit comfortably in your head and when people try to pry at them you can throw up the shield of subjectivity but when we explore these things they fall apart the theme is being thrown out haphazardly in order to muster some deep thought about film itself which will hide the otherwise mediocre writing we are then shown the resistance fleet and now the last of the support ships is destroyed to remind the audience again that this is a heavily stressful environment with extremely dramatic events taking place though the reality is that these ships have basically one person on them and we're told that the people are moved to the Radice so this destruction is par for the course also it is interesting to note that this ship is all the remains of the resistance funded and supported by the Republic what a pathetic organization the first order then comment that the Radice is now on critical fuel so time is running out we then see Poe demanding answers from Admiral Hall dough as nothing has changed this entire time she has stood at the bridge watching her fleet be destroyed without sharing a plan of action to anyone a very interesting plan considering her criticisms of Poe's earlier Poe then says we had a fleet and now we're down to one ship and you've told us nothing tell us that we have a plan that there's hope this is probably one of the most desperate pleas for direction that an Admiral could receive from her fleet commander and instead of now sharing her plan with him and her despondent crew she tells a story about how hope is something you should try and have regardless of whether there is reason to the quote goes like this hope is like the Sun if you only believe in it when you can see it you'll never make it through the night what utter nonsense as if people who didn't believe in the Sun died at night or something as if the Sun wasn't something that people didn't believe in at night you're gonna see the Sun rise and fall several times before you're able to conceive of reality anyway what is this analogy it honestly sounds like something someone invented on the spot and hopes desperately that people will just absorb it and think about it on their own personal level instead of really going through the woods themselves her analogy practically translates to her saying oh you need to listen to me and follow orders even if it looks like I am completely incompetent or that I'm causing the deaths of the entire fleet or another way to put it he's a hothead and he takes risks and he needs to learn to work with others to learn to blindly follow Authority yes oh then seize that hold oh is fuelling the transports and rightly declares we're abandoning ship that's what you got that's what you've brought us to I actually love this line because Poe is saying what the audience feels the Admiral has brought them to desperation there are no shields no protection there no weapons on the transport ships Poe says that if they abandon the raddest there is no hope and they will die he then rightfully calls Admiral holder a coward and a traitor while she stares back at him a face filled with guilt this is clearly a setup for Poe to take leadership as the Admiral is not prepared for the job whatsoever she is clearly in way over her head and Poe will become the leader as he was meant to be likely moving on to the third film as Admiral Poe who fights the battles rather than ordering others to do so there's a lot of potential for storytelling you Poe then tells Finn about holder's planner that they need to hurry up before it's too late we then get a scene upon the Millennium Falcon with Rey closing a draw that now contains the Jedi books we saw earlier in the tree this now changes the context of Yoda saying that Rey has everything she needs with these books we can likely expect more training from here in episode 9 not sure what the point would be though she essentially is unstoppable anyway maybe the subversion in episode 9 will be that she gets killed and you know that would be interesting anyway ray tells Chewie that she's going to see kylo Ren and that shoe he needs to jump out of the range of the fleet and then back in when she needs him to pick her up first of all Chewbacca once again being reduced to an uber driver is extremely sad he actually had purpose in the other films he had relevance here he's just being used by the modern trilogy characters like everyone else from the OT I suppose secondly let me recount the plot here Rey is going to visit the first-order Huck's Snoke and kylo Ren and she will let Chewie know when she wants to come back as if you can just walk in out of the first orders supremacy what a ridiculous notion why does she feel this is possible well aside from the terrible writing the movies reasoning at this point is that she completely believes kylo Ren can turn to the light side to the point where she is now risking her life risking her life for the man that she hated moments ago this is incredibly weak development however it is difficult to criticize her actions here since I too would assume that I was invincible if I was here Rey that arrives at the ship and is surprised to be captured immediately we then see the codebreakers slice right into the supremacy and Ferries finn and rose to their destination back at the raddest we see the admiral hold oh is in the transport section of the ship and she is arguing with poe this is such a strange moment in editing or at least continuity considering that the last time we saw them hold Oh had banished poe from the bridge why would hold oh now be in the transport Bay discussing something with Poe was there a deleted scene here to explain why these characters are now here and why hold oh is listening to Poe regardless of that Poe explains the plan with Finn providing the only feasible way for the resistance to survive as the transport plan turns them into sitting ducks holder replies by saying that Poe has bet the survival of the resistance on bad odds and put them all at risk this prompts her to load the transports faster than anticipated she doesn't explain what's wrong with Poe's plan she doesn't explain what her plan even is she just gets mad and ignores Poe and so since she's not only been extremely incompetent traitorous and downright reckless in her command she is now snuffing out the only plan that can save everyone's lives in favor of one that is a complete guess in terms of survivability on top of that she's saying that Poe is the one who's endangered them all and so Poe is left with no choice he performs a mutiny and relieves holder of her command for the sake of the lives and survival of the resistance to which holder responds I hope you realize what you are doing she almost says this in a victorious tone as though she's proven right by posing competence despite her leadership being pathetic at best and causing this mutiny at the very least the film could give us something in terms of a motivation for holder or understanding of her character but we get none yet Poe then heads to the bridge but he leaves his mutineers to stun the Admiral and her subordinates if they move he doesn't cuff them or place her in the Brig he simply has her stance till this is a bizarre choice as PO is very few allies against this known and respected Admiral especially since he's committed a mutiny but yeah he just leaves her there in the open I'm sure this won't be used for holders advantage in the future then we receive a visual joke showing what looks to be a transport but then we realized it is actually an iron that looked like a transport which is something but it comes right after a scene in which a mutiny takes place to save the lives of the resistance again tone but Ryan thought it works so Who am I to judge whether a scene that should be in Spaceballs fits into Star Wars we then see Finn Rose bb-8 in the codebreaker heading through the supremacy in disguise and they are detected by the first-order controlled BB unit see we then see rey telling kylo that she can feel the good the conflict within him I don't know if you guys are getting deja vu but this scene is from another film but yeah lines scenes and dynamics are straight up being lifted without earning it from better films with stronger developments and payoffs this is why people are criticizing the movie for plagiarism despite being in the same series they are made many decades apart by different people with different visions and different Talent so it doesn't feel like a reference to some it feels like they are poaching it feels as though they have repurposed it to make their own film better kylo then tells Rey that she'll be the one to turn and that he knows who her parents are Rey then realizes that she may be in trouble as this situation is not as she thought though I still do not for the life of me understand why she's so invested in kylo ren's redemption you know what it would make sense if Luke was this invested but we don't like that old grump anymore get off my island when you realize how inappropriate this is you naturally add in the fact that they are trying to ape the original trilogy the angle that Luke was trying to save his father in his legacy because he had strong feelings for the man himself my own father I feel the conflict within you let go of your hate it is too late for me now we have two people who are definitively placed opposite each other in the previous film one that was virtuous in every single conceivable way and developed a relationship with the character from the OT the other a villainous snake who kills defenseless innocents and engages in temper tantrums when the heroes have any kind of success topped off with him destroying the OT character that the former character connected with now it feels as though we've skipped a film in-between and these two are almost in love with each other after one conversation almost like somebody wanted that in their fanfiction and they have now shoehorned it into the story while referencing the OT as a smoke screen Luke and Vader had reasons they had history they had a story Rey and kylo do not regardless of all that the story must go on we catch back up with a code breaker who uses the haitian smelt that he demanded as payment to break into the breaker room and then he returns it the music swells to signify that this is a sweet moment in which the code breaker is to be trusted he has a heart does anyone care that Rose had a necklace in relation to the rebellion that she shared with his sister that also happened to be the key material to slice into the breaker room and thus free the resistance I mean I'm sure he could have used something else and apparently this necklace was just perfect for the job but I just okay whatever fine this move from the code breaker once again raises all the questions we had before why is this man helping them sabotage the greatest enemy in the galaxy with no promise of payment or success in the plan why if he was willing to do it for free would he tell them he's accepting the smelt as payment only to give it back as it was important to cracking the lock does he still want payment why create that pointless drama is the only explanation available for this man in his ridiculous behavior that he is quicky are people gonna write his entire backstory for Ryan in order to explain all of this the answer to that one is yes this man represents everything a writer can do in order to escape from situations they write themselves into he's like a writer's Swiss Army knife he has it all you'll never have to put effort into your story again with him around though I must say there is a line I do like in this scene Rose asks Finn how are they going to make it back to the fleet and Finn replies I know where the nearest escape pods are to which Rose responds of course you do this is a callback to how they met and it's a neat little character moment Phin shows signs of contempt at a response implying that he might want to get away from the character he's made her think that he is just a small sparkle within a heap of horrible writing in this film then we have a quick shuffling of scenes and it's a lot to get through first of all we have c-3po asking poe what happened with admiral holder then a short version of the conversation is the post says instinct Threepio let's go with that this is probably something the film is saying is bad like don't go with your instinct in moments of great peril I'm not sure Poe then presumably shuts down the transports preventing them from leaving but simultaneously turns off the lights in the hangar bay this allows Admiral hold Otis stun Poe's mutineers and approach the bridge and way way whoa she had a gun the whole time they didn't take her gun from here you gotta keep a gun when she was essentially a prisoner where was she hiding it in her ball gown the point of this scene is to put Poe on a time limit now everything is down to Finn and the success of his plan I just can't get over how stupid so much of this is like even aside from the gun what about the fact that Poe turned off all the lights for no reason what about the fact that Poe left the Admiral in the open for no reason or if you secured her with more mutineers under the banner that their current Admiral is trying to kill them all but hey what are you gonna do Ryan clearly wanted her to escape the code breaker then breaks into the breaker room and Finn is now able to access the breaker to have ROS disable it and thus temporarily disable the tracker in order to allow the raddest to make a jump to hyperspace without being tracked I am glad we're all keeping up with that but they're caught by the BB unit and they have an extremely unfortunate shot for the film to make it very clear to the audience that this droids that you saw before this one is responsible for the capture in case you didn't know it just slowly zooms on him while he makes this spinning entrance I couldn't help but laugh at this see besides that though are you telling me that Finn knew this place back to front and yet he surmised that they needed to chop into the front door with hacking at several men and the bb-8 droid are already in there how do they get ahead of them assuming they didn't get ahead of them since that would be ridiculous is there a secret entrance that Finn simply didn't know about oh and Captain phasma is reintroduced we're led to believe that she died in episode 7 do with her sir a garbage chute trash compactor yeah there is but she's back now great one hour and 36 minutes into the film fantastic not like the trailers implied something different or anything the bridge is then broken into and lair is leading the charge Poe is obviously shocked by this and she hits him with a stun after he calls out her name Leia doesn't even try to talk to Poe apparently she just knows exactly what's happening and charged into a room filled with smoke just hoping she wouldn't immediately get shot by mutineers it's worth mentioning that the most basic sort of continuity and logic is now too rich for this script and this only gets worse as time goes on we then make a cut to the transports lifting off and lair is laughing withhold Oh about how much they like Poe let me say that again we cut to layer and hold Oh overseeing the transports being released and laughing about how silly yet awesome Poe is when watching this movie things keep moving so you can't think about what you're feeling in the moment but in my script I can pause whenever I want and talk to you guys about anything this is a very neat power this very moment in the movie this exact spot for anyone watching is possibly one of the worst told stories in history because of the confusion the B plot relied on Poe's actions and now those actions have been recontextualized as not only wrong but potentially a joke throughout the film making the a plot with Poe in the B plot with Finn worthless making the film almost pointless except for Ray's plot when you see the two most powerful plan making forms of authority in the resistance laughing and releasing the transports at this point in the film everything is thrown out the window what is at stake right now what is being done about this at this very moment the transport thing is a terrible idea isn't it if you could have plucked every person who thinks this movie is well-written from the cinema at this very point and asked them what is actually happening they would have no coherent answer nobody knows or can guess because the answer is so ridiculous that not even the greatest fan fiction writers would try and pull it we were waiting for the climax of the plot only to be completely subverted with no reason or understanding of any of it like the only purpose of all of this is to absolve hold oh and to attempt to humiliate PO but I'm getting ahead of myself again hold o says that she cannot board the transport of the rest of the survivors as someone has to stay back and pilot the ship it apparently cannot be piloted by a droid with instructions it also cannot be auto piloted there is no explanation for this again I wonder if there's gonna be a reason why the right is a forcing holder to stay behind in this wonderfully constructed film the random subordinate lady then says I hope this works implying there is some kind of plan here but the audience has not yet been made aware of it so we can't even be invested in the events at hand then we cut back to Ray and in a shot-for-shot steal of episode 6 again she has her cuffs taken off by Snoke just like the Emperor did with Luke and we come to the exact same problem again the Emperor wanted Luke to be free in order to fight Vader and fall to the dark side Snoke only wants to torture and kill ray so why release her I can tell you why because it provides the audience with one hollow and predictable reaction Snoke explains that he was worried about who would rise to match kylo as the balance must always exist he assumed it was Luke and yet he was wrong Rey then says all the things that she's been saying up to this point basically that she's good kylo is going to be good and Luke is not useless all of these statements are laughed off by Snoke as he basically tells her that he orchestrated all of it he created the bridge with kylo and he allowed her to see into his conflicted mind because he knew it would be easy for her to become manipulated by it we don't really get to dwell on this but what Snoke is alluded to would be raised second floor the first being that she's desperate to find parents and the second being that she is too kind and sees a light in people when it isn't there or it's difficult to nurture so to review her literal floors are she wants to find people to love and give her guidance she believes in the good of people even if they are evil there is nothing wrong with this heavenly creature no hardship or cross she has to bear she's not greedy prideful self-centered emotionally stunted emotionally unstable selfish reckless overconfident naive blinded by love womanizing Stu psychopathic self-righteous narcissistic inexperienced overly ambitious narrow-minded morally ambiguous or arrogant she has no vendetta addiction superiority complex bloodlust jealousy all lust for power she is a person with no flaw that could be considered something to work on personally while being incredible at every activity she engages in this in common analysis is known as a Mary Sue as much as people fight the tide on this it is exactly what Rhea is she is a classic example it has nothing to do with her being a girl a Mary Sue character isn't good for a story because there's no room to grow to learn to change she's already made it there she's already better than Luke Poe kylo finn and the rest of the characters as they have a semblance of a flaw that is utilized in the film arguably but not here she is perfection while going through no hardships or tough lessons in fact she imparts lessons to other far more experienced individuals regularly I bypassed the compressor [Music] you will never be strong as Darth Vader you might need this I think I can handle myself and I find myself watching her story unfold and thinking how can I relate to this I am NOT nor have I met perfection I didn't know it existed so I don't believe in her or root for here as I am reassured that the writing will take good care of here and I am just here for the ride people have argued that this is because the force is attempting to counterbalance kylo Ren and this explains her abilities to which all I can say is that is a choice for the writers to make a cop-out to make your character incredible it is not a rule from the universe besides if I accepted it as a reason for this godlike monolith of a role model to exist then she would still exist even if this idea makes sense it's still there it's the same issue with Luke even if 30 years of development explains why he is sheepishly sipping milk from away lished giraffe he is still doing it and that is the problem Rey may have the flawless character with incredible abilities that she earned fair and square which she didn't but the problem is that she would still be that at base who connects to that Snoke then says that she will first give him Skywalker's location then he will kill her as his motivation is to destroy the Jedi the reason many have been disappointed with this reveal is that Snoke was implied to have some strong ulterior motives in the force awakens kylo tells him that the girl is strong with the force but untrained and Snoke wants to see her as soon as he knows this what you say about this girl is true bring according to the last Jedi Snoke simply wanted Rey to find the location of Luke and then kill her but she didn't have the location of Luke Skywalker in the force awakens so does that mean Snoke simply wanted her dead of course not this is simply the result of Rian taking another setup from JJ and doing the most shallow outcome we could imagine yes it is a subversion because none of us expected it but we didn't expect it because it leads nowhere it stops besides you can tell his motive comes down to more than just killing Rey in the force awakens because killing her would be easy he would just have kylo do it she was trapped at the time but he wanted to see her it was implied that there would be some sort of a confrontation perhaps a temptation but now it has become hi tell me where Luke is and then I'm going to kill you Poe then wakes up to the horror of seeing the transport ships leaving the Radice and this means what he fears has come true this is the end for the resistance then Leia points out the window of the transported crate an old uncharted rebellion base planet that's just right next to all this craziness apparently it is somehow hidden from the first order despite them flying right next to it and we're able to see it with our eyes I guess the resistance gets some sort of eye implant that allows them to see past resistance hiding technology anyway the place is abandoned but heavily armored with enough resources to get the word out to allies in the outer rim nice and convenient the only regret about this miracles they have to slowly slog through space for a few hours to get there otherwise this would be beyond unforgivable as a writing tactic because that is pretty great as a resource for them to find right about now isn't it almost like the writer cornered himself and then invented a mystical planet for our heroes to spill on to randomly but no no no this is an established planet in an established part of the galaxy that they were on it's all plotted out from the beginning it's all planned it all makes sense Leia then says that hold on knew that the first order were tracking the Radice but they wouldn't be tracking the transports remember the first order very cleverly only uses one tracker tracking one target at any time because reasons also this planet manages to slip the first-order scanners somehow not to mention their eyes like I said before Poe and Leia are literally looking at this planet from out a window how does any of this work so Poe then realizes that every single survivor can slip down to the plan and hide until well after the first order passes them meaning that Admiral holder did the very best move possible saving everyone's lives in addition here staying behind on the Radice is an example of his sacrificing her life in order to save everyone Admiral Hall dough is a hero through and through now all of her actions make sense as they are recontextualized into a heroic act meant to save the people she loves right well there are characters in literature who engage in perceived evil deeds in order to perform a greater good let's work with one to keep it simple I am now going to spoil Harry Potter I will give anyone who is listening to this as a podcast a few seconds before I begin please skip to this timecode in case you haven't seen the film's or read the books Severus Snape spends a large portion of his time in Hogwarts being harry's perceived antagonist this is in minor and then significant ways saying and doing things that imply a strong hatred as well as obstructing Harry's goals as the series progresses his actions become much much worse he assists in the partial destruction and overtaking of Hogwarts as well as the murder of Albus Dumbledore with only a few moments in between of assisting people in a way that can be shaken off as his duty as a teacher once we reached the end of his story however we are provided a reveal that explains his actions thoroughly as steps taken to defend and protect those he loves as well as bring down the Dark Lord he then ends up dying for it and because of this story Snape is one of the most beloved characters of modern literature now let's look at holder in closer detail and compare she had the plan from the get-go that involved fuelling up the transports and sending out every last survivor to evacuate to the planet below and slip under the radar of the first order so whole dough has been spending the film getting as close to this planet as she can before releasing the transport siphon off survivors from support ships in preparation this is perceived as an evil act because she wasn't actually doing anything on the surface she looked as if she was very apathetic about the situation so if you don't think about any of this it makes sense however what was her motivation for keeping this away from Poe since it's safe to say that about the entire movie rests on her not telling him this well since this is the foundation of the movie fan theorists have been working extremely hard to explain it the first excuse we have is old Oh believed that there was a mole on board and didn't want to reveal the plan to anyone in case this would give the first order information well first of all this isn't mentioned whatsoever in the film but regardless of that this is highly inaccurate because of the moment she has seen fueling and boarding the transports at this point in time everyone on the ship will be aware of the plan including a potential mole and it would be no different if the first thought it was to find out about this when the chase began or from the moment before the transports leave they will still open fire okay so that's out what else we got hold Oh found PO to be incompetent and hot-headed therefore telling him the plan would only make the situation worse he's meant to stay put and follow orders this is inaccurate because the moment PO is given the actual plan he says this might actually work in a very positive manner he believed in the plan from the moment someone told him throughout the film he is simply asking for hope so at the most this explanation now functions as hold oh did not understand her crew and cost the resistance many lives over a petty judgment of character that's still awful writing howl doe didn't like PO and as a superior she has no reason to tell her officers water plan is this is inaccurate because whole dough is actually quoted in saying that she likes PO a lot even after he mutant need and on top of that her crew was noticeably stressed and shaken in their confidence of her PO made this very clear very loudly by labeling her a coward and a traitor in front of the entire bridge and then providing her a plan that he has come up with instead of giving up and she still didn't tell him the superior plan a commanding officer is of course welcome to control the needs a no basis but to allow your entire crew to mistrust you to the point of a mutiny does not mean you're doing your job well whatsoever is she allowed to keep the information to herself absolutely but that's not what's being discussed we are trying to figure out why she would keep it to herself hold O didn't tell PO because he was demoted what this is a terrible excuse who cares if PO was demoted nobody has been promoted in the meantime and he is still the most talented pilot they have the resistance has become so scarce that it's almost a joke to both promote and demote at this point the hierarchy has people jumping from post to post anyway this is not like a fully functioning we bent on protecting a country of millions this is about 400 people in one ship and most of them can't even pilot next wing the only remaining excuses that whole dough is unintelligent or incompetent or a combo of both and that ladies and gentlemen is an admission of a horrendously bad piece of writing it's like inventing a child or a mentally deficient person in your movie to do something horribly bad and set the plot in motion this works for comedies with purposefully dim plots but that sort of writing tool should be expunged from stories of this caliber ultimately in comparison with Harry Potter I will remain spoiler free here we had a very strongly plotted path for a character that appeared one way but as the story unfolded the events changed dramatically in this character was not only absolved they were made a hero with their actions being explained as perfect choices in the moments they were made with star walls the last jet either provided one key fact for a character to keep to themselves for no other reason than incompetence and it caused massive issues only for this characters planned to be revealed right before it would have been catastrophic only for the film to tell us that she is now a hero get over it the audience in Harry Potter is left to complete the puzzle and redefine their perception of every event involving the character up to this point while the audience in star wars is left to wonder why the writers made this happen as it caused so much unnecessary conflict it was done in order to have our plot without this nonsense we have nothing Rian Johnson is far too inexperienced if he thought this is a good screenplay idea to have everything in the movie fall apart because the Admiral is unintelligent had she told Poe the truth from the get-go we would have had plenty of time to explore training with Luke and Rey time for Poe to come to terms with the inability to affect the world while his x-wing is not an option hell we could have had characters and meet each other and learn from each other about their lives did anybody want to hear more about the life of a stormtrooper did anyone want to hear more about the history of the will'd and its players did anyone want to know about these people and how they grew and respected one another there is a potentially great Star Wars film in here and this weird holder choice has effectively wasted upwards of 40 minutes for no reason do you guys remember the scenes in the OT when things would just get quiet and we would just discuss things we would explore characters do you remember your mother your real mother just a little bit she died when I was very young haven't gone by the name of mobi lands in Seoul before you were born what are you remember just images really feelings much anger in him like his father why are you asking me this even the prequels did this in time you will learn to trust your feelings then you will be invincible this is a happy moment happiest moment of my life I have said it many times you other must gifted Jedi I have ever met thank you your excellency I don't think so no one can kill a Jedi I wish that were so I see you were becoming the greatest of all Jedi Anakin even more powerful than Master Yoda why are the new films so obsessed with throwing anything and everything on screen just in case anyone stops paying attention the irony is by trying to rely on the drama to try and rely on the conflict it has become so hollow everything in rows and fins story line as well as pose drama is all for nothing this could have been avoided if holder was honest about it plan from the beginning instead we are told over and over again by the film that she is now a hero and she is sacrificing herself for the greater good this is the worst aspect to the movie for many people and I do not blame them for feeling that way anyway Leia says that holder was more invested in protecting the light than seeming like a hero and we cut to hold oh alone on a dying ship feuless as she looks out the window of the bridge and says Godspeed rebels I can't be sure whether or not this is a mistake in the new narrative these people of the resistance and the first order not the Empire and the rebels the film makes a lot of effort to say that this is a completely different conflict and that they have been referred to in that manner for a while but then she refers to them as rebels so like I said before that is either a clunky reference or a genuine mistake but check out the few times this flip flops as we go also layers lying about seeming like a hero was in reference to Poe as if he has spent his time destroying the most powerful destructive weapons in the galaxy simply because he wants to be a hero and his realization is that he should back out of fights when he really won't win them despite winning the opening battle and saving everyone's lives for which he was chewed out for and demoted for makes sense this is his character arc for the film by the way and because of how badly written this plot has been so far it is hard to be invested in this idea for his character whatsoever besides that Poe Dameron does not strike me as a character that needs an arc but since Ryan wants to throw them out for everyone except Rey he had to have one whether or not it makes a lick of sense I would also like to draw attention to the fact that not a single character at this point or in the future of this film thinks to ask Leia how she managed to pull off this most impressive use of the force none of them would have seen any use of the force whatsoever since it's actually fallen into myth at this point so why is it that when they see something so absolutely dumbfounding none of them feel the need to actually ask her about it I'm not kidding about the myth thing by the way this happened in the force awakens the force it's all true so nobody is curious about his stint as Mary Poppins or Superman or floating CGI monster there you go guys I said it everyone in the comment so it's like why didn't you mention how she was like Mary Poppins or Superman me me me me me yeah well I've done it now there you go anyway the point is that people behave like nothing has happened or that it's normal or something does she do this regularly does Leia get blown out of his ship regularly considering her week that bridge defenses where I wouldn't be surprised we then cut to the supremacy and Huck's thanks phasma for catching Finn and Rose and then slaps Finn pathetically reminding us of how useless this new Huck's is it is then revealed that the codebreaker has made a deal with the first-order revealing the transport plan from Hall Doh in exchange for payment and a ship many people believe this is a plot hole in the essence that the codebreaker could not have known about this information but the plan is explained by Poe to Finn when in front of the Code Breaker this happens sort of vaguely while they're in the ship heading towards the fleet as well as far more in depth when they're actually outside the breaker room so it does make sense that he knows about this the actual problem is that an officer says they ran ad cloaking scan and they can now see the ships on the scanners keep that in mind the transports then start getting destroyed by some kind of mortar cannon that fires blasts as if they have weight to them they arc like World War 2 mortar strikes on earth but in space Ryan please we're then back to Stokes throne room in which he has already stopped torturing Rey as he has the info he wants but of course this happened anyway because for Rey to go through a single hardship is something the writers couldn't possibly allow but how is it that Snoke didn't have this info anyway when he connected Rey to kylo could he not see where Ray was kylo ends up on the island at one point and Snoke gists can't tell let me explain my theory for this the force awakens told us that Snoke wanted Rey but we didn't know why when Snoke finally has here and would likely know everything about the island thanks to the intergalactic connection he still needs a reason to want Rey beyond killing her but Snoke doesn't have motivation for anything as Rian Johnson does not intend to provide him development whatsoever therefore Rian backtracked snoke's power and wrote that he simply doesn't know about the island and that it's the reason he wants Rey and so that's how it plays out easy you don't have to answer any of the setups that Abrams created you can just cut them right off and then when people complain you can simply shout subversion anyway Snoke has the information he needs now promising to destroy Luke and his Island after destroying the rebels against Snoke is now referring to the resistance as the rebels did they forget the names halfway through the film because they always refer to them as a resistance but now it's like a switch has been flipped and everyone's referring to them as the rebels instead Rey is infuriated that Snoke is threatening all the people she loves and so she pulls her lightsaber from Snoke and attempts to kill him but Snoke uses the Force to run a circle around her and bonker on the head with the handle this is almost played for laughs again the tone of these scenes baffled me does it want me on the edge of my seat caring for the safety of the characters or does it want me laughing anyway Snoke then force pushes rey to his spyglass in his room and it's pointed directly at the resistance ships as they're being destroyed aping directly from Return of the Jedi again in Return of the Jedi the Emperor knew about the rebels plans and so he was prepared for everything he simply didn't account for the Ewoks nor did he count on Luke's unwillingness to turn so he had this setup prepared to show Luke the downfall of the fleet as they couldn't penetrate the shields and was sitting ducks thanks to the Star Destroyer trap comparatively Snoke had no idea that they were releasing transports general Hux found out about 30 seconds ago and ordered them to fire Snoke hasn't spoken to anyone so how does he know about all of this may the fourth told ya I'm sure the Force did tell him this film loves to poach from its foundational content but it does nothing to earn it rather than being in reverence of the past it diminishes it by parading the dried corpse extinguished by a constant bleed for more and more money not that any of you didn't know that already anyway these ships are cloaked right now and you can only see them through ad cloaking scan according to the officer from earlier so despite what is apparently very effective cloaking Snoke is watching these transports many miles away from his bedroom with a magnifying glass I do not believe they had someone working on continuity whatsoever there was no guy for it or if he was he would have been fired long ago in order to allow Ryan to reference the original trilogy like Serie C you can see these cloaked ships from other transports as well as just other ships with your own an i/o and by the way the supremacy apparently detected them after doing a scan why in the world weren't they running this scan already at all times this is the last of the resistance they're apparently all that is stopping you from whatever your goal is maybe you could run some scans here and there cuz you know you're not exactly short on electricity Wray then attempts to kill Snoke again but she's flung across the room by a small movement of his finger in response Snoke then tells kylo Ren to kill ray and complete his training which now answers that cliffhanger in force awakens as well apparently complete your training just meant that he wanted kylo to kill ray which he couldn't do until ray decided on her own volition to actually come to Snoke look I know it seems unlikely that this film could have this many tiny and massive problems running throughout it but it really does not to mention that I simply cannot cover everything I've been reading through many of the comments you guys have left and I've actually missed several plot holes already in the first and second videos there are several inconsistencies within inconsistencies there are problems everywhere it's just a hemorrhage it is practically impossible but I'm doing the best I can ray tried to convince kylo not to kill her and then Snoke says several lines in a row I cannot be betrayed I cannot be beaten I see his mind I see his every intent I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true and now he ignites it and kills his true enemy then kylo ignites the lightsaber but it was the one that Snoke had on his arm rest and chops Snoke in half Snoke is dead they even have a reaction shot of his body much later with his tongue hanging out they have killed this extremely powerful creature without providing any context to who he is where he came from or what his motivation was Snoke is simply gone let's review for all intents and purposes Snoke is omniscient and omnipotent this is proven with the mind-reading and the transport info and the connections of two force sensitive people across the galaxy in conjunction with spouting lightning and slamming people across rooms with little to no effort well sometimes being only a hologram he knows everything that is going to happen and he has existed for potentially countless years and yet kylo killed him that easily practically humiliating this monster without setting it up whatsoever I want to immediately get it out of the way that some people think that he's not actually dead this review or analysis is going to assume that he is I'm not gonna entertain the idea that Snoke is not dead until episode 9 because as far as this film alone is concerned Snoke is dead however the overall positive response to this whole thing goes like this I like that they did this with Snoke as the story is not about him the story is about kylo and Rey we didn't need to know anything about Snoke he's just some guy who was powerful and he overstepped his confidence with kylo and now he's dead for it this is a subversion of your expectation and that's why you do not like it let's tackle the subversion part first is it subversive to invent an all-powerful leader to have them die very quickly and easily to introduce a different main villain I suppose it is I won't take that away from anyone but can it be done badly Snoke was given small amounts of screen time in the first film implying that he is safely secured and puppeteering events while staying hidden it is this setup that is provided for Rian Johnson and he could do whatever he wanted with the material he decided to make Snoke extremely intelligent as well as extremely powerful more powerful than anything we've seen in the main series before including Vader this character rose to power and commands the new and arguably improved Empire now I've already gone over the world building and its issues but this would be another opportunity to explain it did snow rise to power once Palpatine was defeated was he trained by Palpatine was Palpatine trained by him is he even a Sith was he afraid of Palpatine does he hate the Jedi does he simply want to take over the world how did he manipulate his way to the top did he always have this army why do the first-order army look just like the Empire's army if it's a separate thing is it separate I know that a lot of people have already established that the Sith are not actually a thing in this new trilogy the kylo and Snoke are not them they simply use the dark side of the force but to be honest are there any guidelines for this it seems to be that if you have the force and you use it to save people you're a Jedi and if use it to kill people you're pretty much a Sith let's not quibble too much over the title anyway we have absolutely no information about the history of Snoke the motivation of Snoke and the relation Snoke has to the universe or characters then we are left to assume that he is an invention a simple invention to behave as an antagonist of course everything is an invention in fiction but we're not supposed to think that from the story being told can you say the same about Palpatine no you can't not only did Palpatine have so much more flesh in the originals than Snoke in terms of goals and presence but thanks to the prequels it is a fully realized character the story of his rise to power and subsequent fall maybe clunk early written and it has plenty of flaws but it's not nothing Snoke is now nothing just the most powerful being in the universe that was previously unmentioned and now is gone is it a subversion to kill a powerful character made to be the villain early and for it to be at the hands of kylo Ren yes is it horribly executed in this movie absolutely Snoke can barely be considered writing just a lazy springboard for kylo and that is fundamentally disappointing for such a rich world with interesting characters there are theories like I said saying that Snoke is not dead and that this was training he had talked about completing with kylo it is a clone or an apparition and that he will return despite the shot of his tongue hanging out as per usual people trying to make a good story out of this awful one doing the writing for the writer please stop though I could really assume that JJ Abrams might actually use that idea since he was the one who made snow can probably actually had some interesting ideas for him whether or not he made them public anyway how about another nitpick it is now established that Snoke can read everyone's minds with ease apparently yet in the opening scene kylo says he didn't hesitate when killing han Solo and Snoke has no problem with this despite that we know that kylo had huge reservations about doing it why didn't Snoke see that Snoke should know that kylo was absolutely veering to the light side during that scene I'm being torn apart I want to be free of this pain apparently snoke just couldn't see this writing is hard isn't it the sad reality when thinking about this as well is that kylo is not getting any more history we had an extremely lackluster recounting of events from Luke that shoved 30 years into one minute and it was a nonsensical minute - but now we have the exact same from the other half of kylos teachers Snoke has told us nothing about Kyla's past and what helped him turn over why did kylo so aggressively follow the dark side what did kylo stand to gain from the dark side did Snoke ever confront any of the characters in kylos life did Luke even try to get kylo back what was Han and Leia's involvement with this what does dark side training look like what does it teach what happened to the Knights of Ren what happened to the students that left with kylo we get nothing nothing meaningful nothing in terms of storytelling just flashy lights and cute animals with Snoke being dead his guards attack kylo and Rey and to be honest this next bit is not specific to writing but I would like to personally discuss it there is a criticism that I first heard with Plunkett's review of Star Wars The Phantom Menace that battles in the prequel trilogy are awful because they are too fast to surgical and come across like a dance with no emotion comparing that to the OT where the battles are rough and strongly emotional between well-developed and conflicting characters the fight itself is about the conflict rather than the choreography I enjoyed this perspective and I definitely see its merits but there is another idea in that same video that the criticism of the OT battles being slow and awkward is invalid because there's such great characters and it doesn't matter I personally stand in the middle I think and I would argue the two greatest battles in all of the Star Wars saga is Luke vs. Vader in Episode six and the battle with Darth Maul in Episode one this is for reasons of investment and choreography do I think the fight in the Phantom Menace acts like a dance well for the most part no it felt as though it ran like a fight between three trained sword users at the same time which I suppose I have a soft spot for ultimately I've always looked at Jedi battles as a little bit different to those with people and swords in real life Jedi and Sith tend to get to use the Force and they also have amazing jump abilities and they get to throw things around they have heightened senses so the way they run tends to sort of give me the impression that be our Jedi fights and to be honest I was invested in the characters fighting liam neeson and Neil MacGregor were the good guys and they only wanted to help so seeing them in peril was getting to me a little bit and mall mall was such an intimidating bad guy that I was invested in the fight regardless of the good guys it could have been built far better but I wanted to see who was gonna win and how the choreography on top of that was pure gold as for episode 6 I was heavily invested in the entirety of the fight Luke and Vader was everything I felt the three films built two wards and their choreography is mostly great there are still a couple of stick clacking moments that seem a bit off but when you get a wide shot of Luke maniacally taking his father down it was incredible [Music] when the force awakens' arrived it was presumed that they took the best of both worlds fantastic choreography and investment all in one but Ray was never going to lose her fights due to her writing which meant investment was kind of out the window for me anyway more to the point for the people complaining about the surgical dancing of the prequels look closely at the fight scene with Ray in Kyllo versus the guards the next time you watch the film look closely there are several moments where the enemy guards are waiting for their cue or stop for a while before attacking again because they're slightly out of place the whole thing is quite a spectacle there's no doubt and the wide shot with ray and kylo back-to-back is wonderful and aesthetically satisfying but this fight has a handful of awkward moments on Ray's side there is this moment where all of the opponents for some reason attack her top down at the same time and then she blocks them all with one move only to kick and then all three of them get pushed back how why what in the world made these guys think to attack you're all the same time in the exact same spot not to mention that there's a distinct lack of force in this fight where the force moves remember when Darth Maul opened the door or when he force pushed Obi one off the ledge remember how Vader would rip things off the wall and throw them at Luke I guess what I'm saying is from a layman's perspective that needed to be a few tweaks in the quality of the fights but let's go back to the writing we have Rey a person who lives on a desert and learn to fight people with a staff who had an hour or so slashing with a lightsaber and even when pitted against a rock she made mistakes she's fighting a team of saber wielding Knights at the same time who are hired to protect supreme leader snoke and she's winning she even performs better than kylo Ren at his prime despite him having formal training from Luke Skywalker and Supreme Leader Snoke people will legitimately compare this to Luke slashing Vader in Episode five because Luke totally managed to stand up against the Dark Lord so it stands to reason that Rey should be able to do this too but Luke received training Luke was being toyed with by Vader though I think I need to remind some people of the most important detail lost he lost the fight this fight is hard to watch because Ray's never gonna fail she will save other characters and she'll come out superior so over all the criticisms applied to the fights in both the OT and the prequel trilogy are right in here it is the worst of both worlds in this fight the newest and most professionally paid fight in the series there is strange choreography akin to a poor direction or a dance in which you are forced to assume that all of this is pre-planned on top of that there is a distinct lack of investment for the characters as they are essentially immune to death nobody's gonna see kailua ray died two random guards come to think of it why aren't these random guards now subservient to kylo what is the point in attacking the new leader exactly this is par for the course with Sith right even if they aren't Sith kylo will be paying your wages now guys there's no need to kill him look the fact is that it's not the worst fight in the series by any stretch of the imagination the visuals are neat it's it's flashy it's cool I really rate it as a bit of eye candy I suppose but on closer inspection it's not as good as everyone seems to believe it is not to mention that like I said it lacks force powers entirely which really added spice to these sorts of things I guess the writers forgot it was a thing Oh No kylo is being strangled if only he had the force to do something about this if only he had the ability to nevermind Rey saved him it then ends with Rey complaining that there is little time to save the fleet and they have to act fast but kylo says he wants it all to die thus if the Jedi Luke Snoke the first order and the rebels again I really think that halfway through the script Ryan forgot to refer to them as the resistance kyla wasn't even born by the time the rebels became the status quo thus making their name unusable so where was he getting that name why is everyone started referring to them as the rebels at this point in the script despite not knowing each other like if you remember we got hold o Snoke and kylo who are now doing it maybe hold on and Snoke who have dated in the past anyway kylo then gives Rey the same speech that Vader gave Luke asking her to rule the galaxy with him and Rey responds almost as the audience would respond to the writers don't do this please don't kylo then reveals to Rey that her parentage doesn't have relevance that she is the child of filthy junk traders who sold her for drinking money she has no place in their story and she comes from nothing she is nothing but not to him I actually really like this line as it indeed me to kylo for a moment how much he's willing to break from his facade in order to prove to Ray that something is happening here something potentially new he may very well be the only character that I wanted to see in the film in terms of development Adam driver is arguably the best thing that came out of the new trilogy and he will likely be the reason I watch episode 9 however let's discuss a different character Ray was speculated to be the child of Luke Skywalker obi-wan Kenobi or even the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine the reason people speculate these sorts of things is to see how the ripple effect pans out let's take the Palpatine theory if she was related to Palpatine then would that incline it to the dark side what would Rey think if she knew she was a blood relative to a mass murdering monster that held a horrifying grip across the galaxy how would this inform her powers and her abilities will the first order respond to Rey as a leader will there be people in the universe who want her to take the throne that Palpatine lost what will her friends do if they find out her lineage this is interesting not because it references the old films but it asks so many story building questions that are ripe for not only exploring but connecting to Trials tribulation oppression pain this small section of dialogue could have revealed so much while being a simple line about appearance I understand that many people will say well that's just typical that's almost annoyingly bad that it's just gonna turn out to be a character from the OT but it could have been anything instead it was nothing raised power is her own and we will likely know nothing about her parents now or how they inform her character which is all we had because of how much of a blank slate she was the defense for this is that it's subversive content as you are also readily aware of so let's do this what is the purpose of subversive content exactly I am now going to provide a huge spoiler for the film that departed so please skip to this point in the video if you've not seen it as it is fantastic seriously skip it seriously skip it the departed follows two characters that are mirrors of each other a cop who doubles as a mole for a crime family he's a part of and a crook who is actually an undercover police officer trying to bring the crime family down the film ramps up its tension and stakes throughout until our undercover cop catches the mole and decides to bring him in they have a conversation in an elevator and everything seems to work out fine for our hero until the doors open and he's shot dead gone from the film why does this work why is this sub vision well-written because by killing our hero the villain is now the main character and we will follow him as he tries to fix his life and recover from all of these events until we reach the climax of the film stories don't tend to do this inherently as it is unwise to bind us to one character and then switch us over to someone else but the departed made sure to develop both characters before making the switch with plenty of room for an invested ending to the story Star Wars the last Jedi employs this same method of subversive storytelling but it is always so lackluster every choice that is made to surprise the audiences are let down it doesn't lead anywhere there is nothing to think about nothing to draw from it is a definitive dead end of course many will argue that that is something to think about the fact that all of these theories are now gone isn't that fascinating well I suppose I can't tell you what you're going to be interested by but the answers are just so simple it turns out Snoke is no one it turns out Rey is no one it turns out Luke hates the Jedi it turns out holder was right all along these subversions are often poorly written but even those adds something to the storyline the ones that are well written the dead end storylines tend to just cut off what could have been fascinating lineages for characters Rey could have had parents who weren't from the original trilogy that could have made her story that much more endearing perhaps a bounty hunter called Janos Fang and he has his own interests in the galaxy which could make for a conflict with his now daughter where he needs to decide if he's going to get involved the bounty hunter could offer her some insight to morality oh how about a drunken miner on some distant moon who did indeed sell her on a different planet as a baby for money and she was sold around but he now regrets his decision and has been searching for her only to get far more than he bargained for the drunk could be the lesson about the folly of trying to identify through her parents how about a high-ranking officer in the first order that made a mistake and got rid of his child but now has to decide whether he will defect to protect her at the very least perform covert levels of sabotage to save their life this could help explain the incompetence of the first order and provides scenes of conflicting ideology even if it is a little bit too similar to rogue one you can make a whole new story or one that has nothing to do with the original films but to do nothing to cut things off to shunt these stories down to put in dead ends it's just so casual and lazy it means you have to do no characterization no connections no continuity no will building around the characters you don't actually have to do anything in fact all I can say is that I can do nothing but be disappointed in the writer next time Ryan please do anything something so as I said what is the purpose of subversive content to surprise your audience with a thread they didn't see coming yet one that is equally as effective compared to what they expected or perhaps even better ray her completely blank slate perfect in every way was waiting for her parents to define her origins and now ray a completely blank slate perfect in every way has no origin of interest thank you for submitting my expectation kylo then says join me please and this will give you an idea of just how much he wants to pursue his own interests in Rey rather than someone else's the fact that he is begging Rey to come with him Admiral holder then prepares a jump to hyperspace and the first order things she is simply trying to escape as a distraction Rey attempts to grab her lightsaber back with the force from kylo and kylo jams it in midair attempting to pull it back with the force we then see Captain phasma and she says execution by blaster is too good for them let's make this hurt captain phasma has now become a James Bond villain she is requesting death by decapitation with an axe but not just any axe why does stormtroopers have laser visions of medieval weaponry available guns makes sense but axes I guess it looks sci-fi style of a substance rearing its ugly head again Admiral holder than an axe her plan to jump to hyperspace through the supremacy in order to protect the transport ships why Admiral Hall doe took so long to do this as a mystery as she only intended for the ship to blow up anyway she watched countless amounts of men and women die before having the thought despite being the Admiral maybe Ryan was trying to tell us that she really is just massively incompetent and that is her role the first order realized what she is doing just moments before and they looked if I'd at the prospect using the hyperdrive hold those slices right through the wing of the supremacy and knocks out a huge portion of Star Destroyers along with it and that brings us to a major plot hole why in all seven of the mainline episodes of Star Wars and rogue one up to this point have we not seen this kind of maneuver why is this something that everyone is clearly aware of and yet is never used why didn't the first order consider that this was her plan until she had turned the ship enough they should have been terrified of that Cruiser from the entire battle if it could suddenly do something like this shielding isn't even relevant it could have chopped the supremacy in half if Admiral Hall dough could actually aim properly yet we've never seen anyone do this previously this is such a major issue it brings up a billion conversations in so many little details because they've done this for example if this is an option for the fleet then why haven't they made large dense ships specifically designed for this with a hyperdrive so they can knock down super star destroyers and death stars I mean wouldn't the Empire prefer to make ships designed for that as they could wipe out planets rather than spend massive amounts of resources trying to create a slow-moving planet cannon this is a hugely unfortunate moment of style of a substance and it's a gut shot to the lore of the saga this ignores all of the space battle storytelling previously established as well as already doing it with the new bombers and the missiles and the TIE fighters though there are counter arguments so let's go through them I'd first like to point out that apparently Rian Johnson did ask his story writing team if this maneuver would actually conflict with anything in the series and they told him no keep that in mind when we go through this because apparently they didn't watch the original trilogy I don't blame them but they do exist you do reference them please have some respect okay the first one is this move did not cause that much damage make no mistake this move obliterates several Star Destroyers and it tears an entire wing of the supremacy off had whole dough shot it right through the middle the entire ship would have been decimated this was obviously done so that our characters on the ship wouldn't have been killed writing once again showing its strings unless like I said before Ryan really wants us to believe that Admiral Hall dough is just terrible at everything regardless this caused a completely unbalanced amount of damage the Radice is practically the equivalent of a Star Destroyer for the good guys in the universe of Star Wars so this is a highly profitable move in terms of a resource exchange so let's move on this move doesn't get performed because you don't want to sacrifice an entire Cruiser every time if you can sacrifice a cruiser for the Death Star or the supremacy plus more than ten Star Destroyers then it's absolutely worth it besides there's no telling how much damage an x-wing hyper speeding into the core of the Death Star could cause considering a coin is a demolition to any structure on earth if it's put to a high enough speed one of the involved writers has actually said that you could not do this with an x-wing but this is obviously just an example of him trying to plug up the holes if you're traveling at an extremely high speed you will puncture something like the supremacy with an x-wing with ease however if hyperdrive involves traveling like they explain an event horizon where you fold two parts of space together and then Pierce right through then it really has nothing to do with the size and it's more about the actual operation which means anything that travels with hyperdrive would actually be able to pull this off besides the resistance could have constructed ships designed for this like I said large cheaply made dense empty ships with steering and hyperdrives enabled this move does not get performed because people do not want to commit suicide I am certain you could find many fighters who would gladly give their lives to take down a Death Star or the supremacy in order to save their friends and family considering how bad the death rates are in space battles anyway but regardless of that you can use droids to pilot that ship or you can set the autopilot as this is science fiction a universe filled with incredible technology it doesn't matter it was only a movie it was visually marvelous and that is where the argument is over because we're talking about writing not visuals this was a horribly written set piece that copped out in order to have something cool and neat happen it plays out like a fanfiction idea one that comes from a young person with interest in creativity but no sense of rules or reality another thought is that if you had to do this then why not have whole dough survive the film and have Ackbar die in a blaze of sacrificial glory another person commented on my previous video and suggested that he pilot the ship as it gets blown pieces into their bridge causing a huge amount of damage enough to disrupt the bombardment and you have a great send-off for a fan-favorite character instead of the pathetic death he actually received an actual argument people make is that the writers decided they couldn't have Akbar do this as it would have been offensive to the current political climate assuming this is true have him be boarded and die in a blaze of glory on one of the support ships considering that these ships are pretty much defenseless when they run out of fuel so the Empire could board and then he could be killed there are methods to utilize rather than giving up on the script and sending Akbar out in an airlock after giving him a singular line just because you don't know what to do with him people say that Akbar died that way because the seriousness of the situation had to be made clear you mean the seriousness of the bridge being blown out and Leia being flung into space did you think the audience didn't realize how serious that was actually I guess you're right we didn't realize it wasn't serious because Leia came right back in any way this whole hyperspace scene is an utter mess but that fits directly into everything we've been going through so far so I guess that would be considered consistency anyway we cut back to Finn and Rose who are just waking up from the explosion the hangar and every last stormtrooper that was lined up there is now gone not a single trooper in sight this move from Admiral hole doe has served them perfectly like they did everything Finn and Rose could possibly have wanted what a convenience they then see Captain phasma moving towards them from the other side of the hangar with a series of troopers she was right next to them there was an explosion and now she's across the other side of the hangar without a scratch marching towards them with a small army this is probably the most blatantly bad piece of continuity in the entire film I can say thankfully that nobody actually has a counter-argument for this other than please just enjoy the film anyway phasma and his stormtroopers then begin to take fire from an 80s T and it's revealed that bb-8 is driving it he's hacked into it and murders every single stormtrooper that accompanies phasma this is to the disbelief of Rose Finn and the audience for some reason there is a set of connecting wires that pull the head of the 80s T off and that just adds questions are you saying that bb-8 removed the top of the ATF's t got inside and then placed the top back on only to have it be pulled off we know that the reason it happened was reveal bb-8 and so it's all nonsense anyway but they really don't want you to think about this sort of thing not to mention that when the stormtroopers are getting wiped out in front of the a TST can you see this handful of stormtroopers in the back they just die to some flames apparently it was probably some guy who spent a good week or more CG eyeing all of that in I wonder how he felt doing that like just wondering how convenient all of this is regardless bb-8 used to have a purpose he was far better utilized in the force awakens as the MacGuffin as well as the r2d2 of the new trilogy he had endearing jokes alongside actual relevance in the conversations between us would you tell us where the base is I'll get you there first deal so where's your base on bb-8 oh but here it's more of a box that needed to be ticked as well as a guardian angel apparently like we last saw him in the box managing to stay hidden from the other bb-8 unit Z despite that very box being the reason that bb-8 unit found him in the first place the movie forgot that and somehow teleported bb-8 to an 80s t this is just so awfully written Finn then realizes for a second time that phasma is infront of him as ROS shouts his name while shooting at phasma but the shot bounces off her armor phasma has functioning stormtrooper armor while every other stormtrooper and clone soldier in the history of the saga does not why is it that she can even be held at gunpoint in the force awakens if she's immune to blasters anyway was the threat going to be Chewie ripping her arms off or something somebody explained in a thread that this material is limited and that's why she's the only one who has it apparently phasma scavenged it from Emperor Palpatine s personal yacht once it was broken down and used it as the plating since it made for perfect deflecting armor but there was no more left after that Emperor Palpatine broken personal yacht armor they still keep adding to the mythos so since this film wants to have Finn and phasma you know to engage in a confrontation phasma has now lost her rifle for no reason they may have been a shot to explain this and if it was cut then you know so be it but we do not judge things by what could have the continuity takes yet another hit and nobody in the editing room or more likely the set kid Rose is also here so the writers need a way for her to be trapped until Finn finishes his fight with phasma so they place a gun turret in the distance that has a stormtrooper on it this means that when Rose rises from behind some convenient wreckage she takes fire and so she has to sit back down this removes her from the fight why is there a gun turret placed in the middle of an exploded hangar bay that only became active once Rose needed to be out of the fight where was this thing throughout the scene why is it the ones phasma and finn finished their fight this turret is gone why doesn't this turret fire at Finn all of these questions and more will not be answered in order to allow the confrontation that has been building up for many incredible back-and-forth scenes or more accurately trailers to take place Finn and phasma an incredibly well developed conflict phasma hates him because he defected and Finn hates phasma because she is a cruel storm trooper that's it we could have history development conflict emotional investment but we prefer to do nothing she's just there and Finn is just there and so they fight because as I said phasma lost her gun but it's okay because she has some kind of spear thing the both of them clash and phasma refers to finn as a cog in the system adding once again to the theme of capitalism being bad I suppose finn then responds let's go chrome-dome it is difficult to say when a line is definitively cringe but I know many feel the same way about this line as I do when I heard it I had to look away in disappointment the only level of investment I had in their conflict was now gone Finn then not only holds his own but manages to pull off some highly choreographed moves with the stun baton despite being a janitor for most of his life combined with training for blasters this was fine with the whole swinging the sword thing because there was no grace or skill but he was actually using skilled moves to counter phasma here phasma pushes Finn off into what looks to be a pit and immediately turns to shoot Rose with a pistol she suddenly has phasma had a pistol the whole time she was using her rifle it disappeared for no reason and so she used her stick despite having a pistol what is happening here as phasma goes to turn around she sees Finny's risen right up to her and smashes her in the head with his stun baton as phasma struggles to get up she calls Finn scum and he replies rebel scum this line once again not making sense as most characters have now willingly given up calling it the resistance opting for rebels despite the fact that most of them weren't even alive when that war ended and I'm not really sure whether this was just a mistake and they ran with it but I think at this point we should just assume that they are trading names not to mention the utter wince worthiness of this line again soon after that phasma drops through the floor into a huge Infini pit and it's safe to assume that phasma is now deader than her death in the first film and irrelevance to the story is completed she acted as Finn superior officer she insulted him he eventually had to fight her and she died Finn fell off and landed on a platform that saved his life phasma fell off and landed into a bottomless pit of fiery death karma really does have its ways or I guess convenience does sorry phasma is a controversial character now not because she's a woman despite what interviews and press conferences would have you believe what does that like for you to be able to play the first Star Wars female villain it's so exciting it really is she is Star Wars first on-screen female villain and that is really really exciting not just because it's great to have a female villain in Star Wars but what I think that JJ and Kathleen the whole creative team have done is truly remarkable and truly modern as you know we love strong women around here and you are known for playing two of them captain phasma in Star Wars and Brienne of Tarth I'm game [Applause] they both challenge these stereotypical roles of women I think they have taken a female character and how we relate to her is due to her actions and her character rather than the way that she looks in flesh and the idea of this character being in the force awakens and that's how we first relate to her is due to her character and her actions is exciting to me she wouldn't be scared you are her you're not scared but they have a character in it that I feel is truly progressive we relate to Captain phasma not to that random group of elements that causes us to look a certain way in flesh we relate to her due to her actions and her character and that I think is truly modern oh phasma is now controversial because she falls into a category of forced strong female characters that want to be cultural icons by virtue of the organs they were born with rather than the complexity of the characters the relatability phasma was just an overgrown toy meant solely for the flashy imagery and the marketability and all chrome stormtrooper did you know that Amazon's top-selling Star Wars figurine was actually Captain phasma um I think I've just seen the Captain phasma car and talked to me last week you had a Captain phasma flag and now you're looking at the captain phasma car you are you are really into being Captain phasma and I love this I'm heavily into the March and I don't know what it is I had to do to get that car but I would really like the car they make a point to plaster her in the trailers all the time taking up dramatically disproportionate amounts of time compared to her actual screen time for some reason the filmmakers bait this character as if they know we want to see more of them but then they don't provide it overall the fans wanted the character to be fleshed out just a little bit give us something to work with some history some motivation since the movies were making her out to be so unique and interesting and yet she ended up being so stylish without any substance it's a very strong pattern now so tell the fans what they want to hear because I think everyone agrees that you were criminally underused in the force awakens so are we gonna see more Captain phasma the sad fact is that she has incredibly small amounts of screen time with barely any lines of dialogue this then serves as an obstacle for Finn yet Gwendoline Christie bless her heart tries to sell the characters something completely different and we have a woman that people have seemed to love and we relate to her character and her actions rather than the way she's been made flesh then again she's a little bit strange in interviews and if you have the power of honest armor and this weapons for one day in Hollywood what would you do with all this stuff I probably put a couple of casseroles inside the armor and then just lie in the sunshine in in Hollywood and cook them for friends what am i doing the point is the captain phasma is to be placed into the big book of modern strong female characters that have nothing valuable or meaningful about them as characters we are told they are important and interesting solely by being a woman and that is a step back for us in terms of writing and culture if you tell generations of children that phasma is good solely because she's a woman then you are saying there is nothing valuable about being a woman beyond the virtue of being a woman what is her motivation what is her history what is her struggle how does she rise in the ranks is any of this remotely valuable as content before her simply being a woman modern media would have you believe that it is not I hope in the future we can still muster some independent free thinking strong women motivated by their own perception of the world and willing to risk everything to help themselves or their loved one or he'll just be interesting characters rather than the cinematic equivalent of being beige flavored oatmeal regardless finn rose and bb-8 ride the 80's t2a transport and escape the supremacy we then cut to a corpse of Snoke and general Hux is looking around the throne room he spots an unconscious kylo Ren and prepares to execute him but kylo wakes up Hux then says Ray took snoke's escape craft and that they have no ruler now that the army belongs to him but kylo strangles Hux and demands that he is now the supreme leader and so kylo has taken snoke's place they shouldn't surprise anybody that Hux doesn't get in the way of anything and that he is now just a complete subordinate to kylo such a shame why didn't we see what happened when Rey woke up to an unconscious kylo they just have this strange line to tell us that she's gone it's all so strange that kylo was knocked out but Rey wasn't I guess it makes sense when you think about how ray needs to get back to the resistance and kylo needs to get ready to attack them because you know it's more convenient if that's how it all happens regardless considering how rushed the ending to this film is I do not think they filmed a scene explaining how she got out and then cut it I think they genuinely forgot to do it in general and they figured they could just make it a throwaway line funnily enough this is an attitude that actually does help the film sometimes it's lazy but it works and yet they didn't do it for all the other plot holes in this film like throwaway lines could fix so much of this mess you have no idea but cutting the scene is so weird since it would've been a great character moment for Rey to spare kylo and then to realize that she's cost the lives of more and more people the longer he lives but now she's just gone I suppose she called Chewie as well as that's all useful for and that brings us to crate the planet that all of our characters good and evil get rushed to for the second third act of the film it also brings us to the end of part two as my regulars will know my video series is are usually created in advance this means that all three parts were created before release and so I can't really change them as we go along but I'm sure you've all made some useful suggestions and they're probably going to be imported into the next you know series though I do appreciate the support and well thank you so much for watching folks I shall see you in a week's time
