today's video is sponsored by keeps about 11 years ago on august 31st 2009 the original creator of minecraft notch implemented one of the most famous mobs ever known to this blocky game the creeper and they've changed a whole lot over the last 11 years and so today we're going to be covering 40 changes to the creepers that have come and gone through minecraft so august 31st 2009 the first appearance of creepers now originally creepers were based on a failed pig model notch ended up swapping the axis and made the pigs accidentally vertical and so they ended up looking a little something like this here's an example of a moving version of the mob in question that would change minecraft forever now while the first appearance of them was on august 31st they were given their first official texture number two on september 1st the very next day creepers were changed into an actual mob instead of a glitched mob they would turn to a lighter shade of green when hit instead of going red as they do today so here's an example of kind of what that was looking like when you would attack these creatures in question a lot darker a lot more mischievous number three gave us a glimpse of the creepers first game mechanic the fact that they could explode back also the same day on september 1st 2009 back then creepers would make a four by four by four spherical explosion when killed and so we're going to show you a little bit about what that looked like right here so originally they would bounce towards you melee attack you and then the moment they actually died well then they would sit on the ground for a few seconds and then blow up showing off some leaf particles when they did so which begs the question are creepers easy does it dude i'm not looking for trouble here oh yeah yeah they were a lot easier to escape from because you had some time before when they died and when they blew up so be nice if they still had that and that was part of another change on the very same day september 1st as you saw in the last point instead of attacking like straight up other mobs they would actually begin to bounce towards you first so now we've got some spawn eggs to show you what an inactive creeper in theory would look like here so right now they're just kind of hanging out yes yes yes easy does it slowly chasing you down until they ended up getting a little bit closer but their first official introduction came in the 0.24 survival test version of minecraft this is the first time creepers were officially added into game and they were also given a new texture a much lighter one more similar to the one that we know and love or hate today again here's a look at the old texture compared to the new one right off the bat you can see a huge difference in the color scheme between the new one and the original old one in addition to that the old ignited versus the new ignited one again the flashing differences here are very evident with respect to brightness yeah back in the day they weren't too bright on point two for survival test zero three there were less broken explosions associated with the creepers back then creeper explosions would cause water and lava to drop as tile items this update removed that so this is how it used to work creeper would blow up and it would literally blow up the water around it as well and you would have actual water tiles and lava tiles that you could pick up and use to place water and lava down wherever you pleased ah minecraft's original buckets extra danger was added in the 0.25 survival test while it was a small but important change this affected more than just creepers they were given the ability to respawn and despawn once second you can be here and the next a creeper is here as you can see they had different spawn mechanics you could literally have mobs just kind of appear right in front of you so imagine if creepers would just show up right next to your face it would not be good for builds before we jump to the next update guys a quick word from today's sponsor keeps you could say i love my hair a lot i've had some serious adventures we'll call them over the years with various different hair styles now most of these hairstyles won't be coming back thankfully but you could say the same thing about your hair not coming back now keeps is a product all about hair loss prevention and even if you don't need it someone you know might two out of three guys will experience male pattern baldness by the time they hit age 35 and when my barber told me that the hair on the back of my head was starting to thin out hate that guy i figured it was time to call on keeps to help me protect my luscious locks while i still have them with keeps you can even meet with the doctor online to get keeps delivered right to your door so you can save on gas money and get to work on that dad bod so if you're noticing you're losing hair it's time to act for a limited time head to keeps.com log.zip or use the link in my description to get fifty percent off your first order you'll thank me later numbered skeleton aggression also added in in the 0.25 survival test this is the update where creepers would attack skeletons that would shoot at them so what we're gonna do right now is set up a structure to show that off skeleton in here and a creeper right in here so now check it out what you can see here is that the skeleton will go and try and attack me hit the creeper instead and what you'll notice is with enough patience you'll actually have the creeper hopefully head towards the skeleton and begin yes do it oh he's embarrassing me there it is yeah take out that skeleton nasty nasty boy so yes now creepers would respond in turn to any mobs that attacked them now on october 20th 2009 creepers were given weaker explosions at this time notch mentioned that creepers would no longer blow up rock type blocks so as you can see right here the stone will be destroyed yes nasty now while not to mention this is when this change was going to happen it wasn't actually implemented until 26 survival tests point 26 to be specific and that's number 10 right now so this is what notch what he said was actually implemented but now they would no longer destroy rock type blocks stone will still be destroyed but not as much so they were not as effective in blowing up all of the stone around them but they also were given creeper explosion particles as well also adding the 0.26 survival test was a slight texture change in this update the creeper texture was changed they made a little bit leaf here so here's what it looked like before and now here's what it looks like so again this looks similar to the creeper we know but this one is the actual creeper texture as far as i'm aware that still stands for about 11 years now this is the one we're used to this one not as much he got a little bit darker with time he's been on the sun too much explosions were changed once again for in dev20100204-2 aka .31 before this update creepers would only explode on death they were changed to explode when they got close to you instead i jeez they were also given new drops for in dev20100219 this is the update when creepers were given gunpowder except it was not originally known as gunpowder in game instead you get a different item well when you were lucky enough to get it as an actual drop now this item gun powder was originally known as sulfur now it wasn't given the official gunfighter name until much later at some point during in-dev what we saw was that there were less leaves involved in the creeper explosion as well back then creepers gave off leaf explosion particles on explosion so again here's a simulation of what that looked like let's actually blow him up instead this is what it looked like before lots of leaves all over the place so once again it makes the question does this mean creepers were originally made out of leaves it wasn't until alpha 1.2.0 that new damage sounds were added to creepers in this update creepers were given that sound likely the one we have today whenever we hit a creeper listen in music to my ears and by music to my ears i mean one of the scariest sounds i've ever heard in this game it is terrifying when you hear a creeper nearby now number 16 here was the official logo update for minecraft in beta 1.4 this was the update where the minecraft logo changed and as you can see right here the creeper was officially recognized literally etched in stone as one of the main mascots of minecraft ah such a lovely home there charge creepers were added in beta 1.5 this is the update where they were implemented and they had bigger explosions than we were used to so red is the regular form of a creeper explosion in this example here and green or blue excuse me is going to be the charge creepers as you can see a regular creeper explosion not terribly large still dangerous but nothing compared to the charged creeper which has a very big blast rays in fact oh gosh you guys are the worst i mean look at this the damage is insane literally comparing these two next to each other is night and day creepers were made even deadlier during beta 1.8 this update made them more dangerous because they now have the potential to kill unarmored people within a four to five block radius so we're gonna go ahead and give this a shot we've got a creeper that we're gonna spawn in in here now again a lot of this was dependent on difficulty mode so having a creeper nearby you within this three to four block range was guaranteed to deal a lot more damage during the sound update they were given a new explosion sound this is the update where it that was implemented now again this is the sound that we've been hearing a lot of recently okay this is what you're used to hearing not a fan especially when it's near all my goodies number 20 they were changed to have less aggression this was in beta 1.9 pre-release five aka the 1.0.0 update of minecraft essentially the official release of the game before this update creepers were so aggressive that they would attack players even in creative mode so check this out look oh gosh no no please do not blow up the showcase here we're in creative mode right now and this boy is still trying to get us yo come on guy you got something better to do with your time doesn't look to be particularly in the 1.1 snapshot 11w50a disc drops were added to the creepers but in a very unique way creepers now drop music this went killed by a skeleton and so once again we've got a little bit of a farm right here with a proper setup you can get a skeleton to attack a creeper it only needs to deal the final blow but the moment it does as you can see right there it managed to drop uh the fabled cat disc one of 13 discs found in game today or i guess 14 with the pig step but anyways reigning creepers were added in the 1.4.2 snapshot 12w 38b it kind of in this update when a creeper fell on you from a certain height they would automatically explode so if you've ever had one falling you from atop a ravine well that's exactly why it happened see it was very dangerous but they were updated once again to be less explosive in the 1.6.1 snapshot before this update hitting creepers in creative mode would cause them to explode but what we're going to do right now is simulate this effect by doing something a little bit different so now that we're going to go ahead and spawn in a creeper while they would no longer attack us in this creative mode per se if you attacked them they would explode even while you were in creative mode you could see this before in a lot of creative mode versions where mobs would come for you even though you were technically invincible number 26 was flint ignition in the 1.7.2 snapshot 13w 36a prior to this you could not blow up creepers manually but now you could use flint and steel to do the deed boom what's good oh no the showcase area well i guess i showed you everything and as you move on to number 27 where creeper vision was added in the 1.8 snapshot 14w058 when spectator mode was implemented in the game we were given the ability to expect it from a mob's point of view and creepers have a special shader that displays when you spectate them so we're gonna go ahead and test this out right now as you can see we are in creeper vision right now now if i were to switch into f5 mode you'd see that we lose that vision but going back into first person this is what creepers actually see it's very pixelated and it is a total hue of green the entire way through at some point another mob avoidance was added in the 1.8 snapshot for 14w 11a in this update certain mobs would now avoid creepers that were about to explode this was later removed and we'll cover that in just a second but what we have here is an example of kind of what it looked like so when a creeper was nearby ready to explode the mobs would instantly disappear so check this out look just like that they all try and leave the area they're stuck in the doorway hopefully the creeper doesn't explode on it looks like it's kind of stuck in limbo right now but again we'll get to that removal soon for now dropping heads number 29 in the 1.8 snapshot 14 w38 this update had an official way to obtain non-wither mob heads such as creeper heads and so we've got a farm down here to show you exactly that we're gonna go to creative mode to demonstrate using charged creepers you could actually cause nearby mobs not all of them but i think four of them to drop their own heads and so let's show you what that looked like right here come on do you think baby yeah oh and some glowstone to boot we managed to get a zombie at here now again you could even use a charge creeper to oh did not need to do that to cause another creeper to drop its head from time to time as well yo that's funny can we just we just had a whole mess of portals in here hilarious no time for the nether we've got more updates to cover such as number 30 less heads in the 1.8 snapshot as well a small change but in this update mob head's dropping feature was balanced a little bit charged creeper explosions would now only drop one head but as you can see here there were a plethora of other options i'll spare you you're just gonna have to believe me skeletons zombies withers and creepers could drop heads before they drop a lot now it's just one which makes sense now mob avoidance was removed for number 31 in 1.8.1 pre-release the first pre-release now it doesn't work anymore mobs will no longer run away from exploding creepers they just kind of sit there and and take the explosion for the most part so go and do the thing yeah well i mean oh gosh no i don't want to go the nether this change had everything to do with graphical performance and computer performance where having the mobs move too quickly when a creeper was about to explode would cause lag on a lot of lower end computers now speaking of smarter creepers was number 32 here in the 1.8.1 pre-release as well creepers got smarter in this update unlike other mobs they realize it's not a good idea to attack iron golems because you know iron golems are you know pretty smart if we were to spawn in a creeper and actually oh gosh no no not me the idea here is that we are simulating a creeper being attacked by an iron golem using these snowballs and as you can see right here the creepers have no business oh gosh with the iron golem they may try and attack each other but oh no the showcase it's okay i know what it was going to be it's number 33 it's follow range creepers were actually changed depending on what items you were wearing in game when you summon in this creeper red is the current detection range blue is when you wear a creeper head so yes depending on if you wore a creeper head as a sort of disguise you'd actually note that creepers would follow you a little less frequently so what we have right here is an example of that follow range the red and the blue are the difference in follow range now normally a creeper can spot you from whenever these red particles are in terms of distance it's a 16 block distance now with the blue faller range that is the range that creepers will be able to see you once you have this creeper head so if i were to take off this creeper head the creeper would be able to see me now again putting it on would modify that once we left the original follow range now once again you can see here that now that we have this creeper head on he's not going to come for me even though we are remarkably close to him practically looking directly at him but the moment we pass by this blue follow range we will once again be close enough for the creeper to know we exist they would change once again with respect to their detection range modification i don't remember what the sign said on the date sorry about that you all just have to check the wiki i guess oh don't give me any trouble okay man but they were modified once again to actually increase the range from eight blocks i believe to or reduced from eight to six so now they had even less ability to see you if you had a creeper head so before it used to be eight then it was reduced to a six block follower range so these guys can still not see me but getting a little too close well as you can see it does in fact work but it was changed again in 1.9 15 w 36 8 snapshot there's another small change wearing creeper head now reduces their detection range by half instead of by 37.5 percent so once again it is in a sense buffed which i believe put it at about a seven seven block range so somewhere right in the middle there now 36 were shorter creepers in 1.9 snapshot 15w 39a yes creepers were made a little bit taller beforehand and then with this update they were made a little bit shorter so we've got examples of this right here so you can see here the height difference is very minimal in nature but it allowed them to sneak into more areas as a result going through snow layer entrances things of that nature this is 1.8 and this is 1.7 slight difference and these aren't update versions these are actual block heights here 37 had game rule fixes added in 15w 51as 1.9 snapshot the do mob loot game rule stops mobs from dropping items however until this update creepers could still drop music discs so we're going to try this with the music farm we're going to turn mob loot off definitely didn't just mess with explosion you got to be joking me it keeps messing up just take my word for it we got to move on they would drop discs when they weren't supposed to okay that was the change they fixed it for the 1.11 snapshot 16w 32a potion cloud ability were added to creepers when affected with a potion creepers now leave a potion cloud behind a lingering potion effect on explosion so if we were to impact a creeper with a strength potion a weakness potion things of that nature upon explosion they would actually leave an area of particle effects that upon walking through would actually give you that effect in question we've placed it up here so the creeper doesn't mess with us but the idea is if you were to go right up there you'd be hit with that effect okay or we can do it by hand i suppose so why don't we try and do some of that we'll spawn on the creeper hit him with this water breathing this and that yes yes yes oh gosh so as you can see if we were to enter this we'd be hit with water breathing invisibility and a little bit of poison as well 39 is a save game id change added in the 1.11 snapshot 16w 32a there's a very very small change but worth noting in this update the save game id which is more of an internal thing was changed from capital creeper to lowercase creeper there's no visual representation of that because again it was mostly internal 40 were stray discs in the 1.14 snapshot before this creepers only dropped music from skeletons that killed them strays were introduced and if you don't know what a stray looks like this is what they look like they are the frozen skeleton variant oh yes get them golem please oh what a guy what a guy yeah i recognize you dude i'm not gonna do all the mob disc farm just know that when strays would kill creepers they were updated to also drop music discs and finally bonus the rendering update the 1.15 snapshot a very recent one 19w 39a creepers were changed with the rendering engine change which as you know may have affected creeper explosions by may i mean it did anyways it's hard to notice but creepers pre 1.15 had a brighter flash when they were about to explode this is old creepers as you can see here these are the new creepers and we'll show off what that looks like right here a little bit brighter of an explosion that was shown off there so that is 41 changes that were all done to creepers and an exciting note so the 11 year anniversary of creepers
