you can draw this in procreate you can draw this wintry landscape in procreate because I will guide you through every step of the way we will only be using the brushes that are already in procreate plus two free brushes that you can download through a link in the description during this video tutorial you will be learning by doing exploring the features of procreate like layer clipping masks Gaussian blur motion blur and more and before we get started I want to thank you all for sending in your artwork through Instagram I really enjoy seeing all of your artworks if you want to have a chance seeing your artwork in the next you can draw this video then be sure to share it on Instagram and tag me in the image so I will be able to find it but let's get started with this wintry scene first of all our canvas it is 3000 by 2000 and as always I have made a color palette so you can use the exact same colors I am using in this video you can download it for free through the link in the description let's get started first thing we'll do is make a gradient for our background and we'll start with this dark blue color now let's set our brush to 40% and we'll place this dark blue at the top and at the bottom then switch to this lighter blue and make a stroke here and finally go to that lighter blue will make our brush a bit smaller let's say 25% and lights and up that center here like this and now we will go to the magic wand here in the menu and go to gauzy and blur now if you slide your pen or finger over your screen to the right you will be blurring this layer let's go to 30% and click the brush again to go back next we are going to make a new layer so go to these two squares and then click the plus to make a new layer and we will also switch our brush we will go to calligraphy and then select the mono line brush and we are going to paint some ice or snow a snowy plain and we will do that by using this blue the fourth color in the palette we will start drawing a bit below halfway the painting the canvas let's set our brush let's do 10% and we'll start like I said about a little bit below halfway and make a horizontal line now hold your pen in place and then put one finger on your screen to make it perfectly horizontal and now we will make a second line we'll start just below that first line and we will make kind of a wobbly line and we will make this area a bit broader as we go to the right like this and now we can drag in this color by just dragging the circle into our shape and fill it now let's paint or draw some mountains we'll do that on a layer below this icy snowy plain layer so click on your first layer and then click the plus to make a new layer between these and we will select this fifth color for this and we will start by drawing some mountains let's start a bit below the top of our canvas here and make some random Mountain shapes down here bit diagonal then all the way down and then to the left to the left side of your canvas to close the shape we'll do the same thing on the right side of our canvas let's just start here on that snowy plain and go up diagonally up even more to make a random mountainy shape and again make sure that you close the shape right here and if you're not sure if your shape is closed then you can always just turn off that snowy playing layer to check it and then we can fill these shapes by dragging in the color let's add some texture to these mountains we'll do that on a new layer so be sure that you have selected that mountain layer and then click the plus and now click this new layer and select clipping mask this way whatever we paint will only be visible on that mountain shape we will use another brush we will use the carbon stick which you can find under charcoals right here the carbon stick and let's add some light texture will pick this gray for that and I have my brush set to 8% and let's just glaze over these mountains to add a little bit of stony texture to make these look more like well mountains made out of stone don't have to give this too much thought just make a nice base of texture because we'll also use another brush which you can find under artistic under artistic you will find hearts now we use this brush as well to add some more stony texture let's go for 9% and gently glaze over some areas to add a little bit of stony texture rock like texture on this side as well just create some random texture here make it a bit bigger let's see 20% or some more random texture here to create even more interesting contrast in our mountains we'll make another layer on top of this one so click the plus again and this layer we will also clip so quick clipping mask and we will also change the layer blending mode of this layer we will set it to add just click the end and then go to add this way whatever we paint will lighten the area below we will also switch our brush we will go to drawing and then use the Oberon and now let's add a little bit of snow to our mountains we have our brush set to 3 percent and let's start with these mountains on the right I'm going to add a little bit of snow on the right sides of the mountain just a little bit and I'm focusing on just one side of the mountain because that is more natural because maybe the wind has swept all the snow on that right side or if the light is hitting the other side of the mountain then there will be less snow on that side so usually when well when the mountain is not covered entirely in snow then you will find more snow on one side than on the other so stick to one side we're sticking to the right side right now to paint the snow there just draw in some random snowy shapes and of course you can check some reference photos to see well to get inspired on how to draw that snow and let's go to this left Mountain to add some snow there as well some snow on top here and I'll be making some vertical lines right here that looks good now it's time to add some pine trees and I've made two special brushes for that we've used them in previous videos and you can still download them for free through the link in the description got them right here I'll use the pine tree broad and we'll make a new layer we'll make a new layer that is beneath the ice and in front of the mountains so we are in the right place here we can just click the plus to make a new layer will select this dark blue color the seventh color in our palette we will start by adding some pine trees in front of these mountains this is clearly very big let's make our brush a bit smaller I'll go to 40% and just add some random trees both on the right side and on the left side and don't worry about any trees sticking out here make the brush a bit smaller even 33% and I'm going to switch to the pine tree a lot as well set that to 30% to add some more trees and to give it a bit of variety [Music] now I want to play some trees in the center as well and I'll use this lighter color for that color number five I make the brush a bit smaller 38% and again I'll switch it up with the pine tree broad so we can vary the shapes of these trees now let's get rid of all these under sides of our trees and there's an easy way to do that we can go to the s-shaped ribbon and use the rectangle tool and now we can just make a selection and if we swipe with three fingers we can clear anything that's in the selection now I want to blur this layer just a little bit because these trees are in the distance and when something is in the distance it'll look a bit more blurry especially when you have glasses like I do and you don't have them on okay we use Gaussian blur which is under that magic wand and slide to the right just slightly let's say three percent now we are going to add even more pine trees but this time we will add them above our icy plain layer so we'll click that layer first that's layer two click the plus to make a new layer and again we will draw in some pine trees make my brush 38 percent I'm going to use this very dark color here and drop in some trees to have full control over these pine trees you can add them all on separate layers this way you can move them around play around with the size and place them exactly where you want them so make sure that whenever you place a new pine tree you make a new layer so I'm going to place each pine tree on another layer and if you click freeform when you have selected that arrow you can even make your tree bit thinner to vary it up and of course we will also use the pine trees long again make a new layer so you can move your tree around and again we won't really worried about things sticking out on the underside we will get rid of that later and another tree so we'll make another layer move it around like to have it there may be one more pine tree brought on a new layer again let's put that one here you know let's just add one more I want a small one right there now we have all our trees in place so now we can merge these layers just squeeze all these trees together and of course we want to get rid of these tree trunks and we'll do that by using a layer mask just click your layer and select mask now by using black just double click here by using pure black we can mask anything on this layer so it's kind of like erasing but then it's not permanent because if you mask something and you want to get it back you just switch to white by double tapping here and then you can paint it back in let's use a bit of a textured brush on our mask so we'll go to drawing again and use that over on brush just go over the trunk to mask it and if you make these small little dabs it's like there's some snow on those tree trunks [Music] for our next step we will move to that icy snowy plain well click that layer layer 2 and select alpha lock this way we can only paint on the pixels that are already on this layer now we will add some light to this layer by using a luminance brush the light brush and we will just pick this light blue and we are going to paint some light on this layer and we'll make horizontal strokes to do this let's make our brush 7% and just make these horizontal lines and use very very little pressure because if you use a lot of pressure this will happen and we don't want that we want some really very subtle light on that snow so be gentle perhaps some light here on this side and make sure that you keep your lines horizontal don't go crisscross over that plane that won't look very realistic something like this and how do we have our light we are going to add some dark details to this snowy plain we'll do that on a new layer I'll click the plus and use a clipping mask to be sure that everything ends up on that snowy plane now of course you could also just use that alpha locked layer but this way we have a little bit more control if you don't like what you're doing in this next step you can easily erase it we are going to use a charcoal brush go to the charcoals and we'll use the six be compressed to add some darker details to this snowy plane and we'll use this very dark color again let's make our brush very small 1% and we are just going to add well it's like a bit of dirt some well the the underground we're gonna paint that dirt that is underneath that's snow you can see it shining through well not really shining it's not it's not meeting any light but you can see that the snow has melted a little bit along that edge and you will see parts of that dirt below just make some random little shapes along that edge near the water near the ice and with this brush if you use the tip of this brush then your lines will be very thin but if you use the side of the brush your stroke will be very thick so keep an eye on the angle of your brush if you want to get into painting in procreate more and if you are enjoying these tutorials then you might like my patreon page as well because there I have a lot of fully narrated video tutorials which involve a lot of painting in which I tell you about my painting techniques and you'll see exactly how I build up my paintings talking about textures lighting so if you want to learn more they might want to check that out you can always find a link in the description [Music] just add keep adding some random shapes [Music] along that edge now I would like to add some bushes some twigs sticking out of that snow and we'll do that on a new layer again and we won't well we won't be using clipping masks this time because I also want those bushes to be in front of the mountains and the trees if we would use clipping masks here then they won't get any higher than the top of the snowy plain to draw these little bushes we will use the procreate pencil which you can find under sketching I have the brush size set to seven percent and how we will just randomly draw some twigs sticking out of that snow Fareeda angles a little bit make some a bit longer so I'm a bit shorter just some random shapes along the edge near the water will make a bit of a bigger bush here so give it some branches and let's also add some leaves to these bushes not too many because it's really cold of course and the bush won't have many many leaves let's go to organic and pick the snow gum brush I have 2 size set to 3% and just place some random leaves around these branches I'm not pressing too hard if you press really hard the lease will become bigger try to vary that up a little bit I think our snowy plain looks nice right now we are coming back to the lair all the way at the bottom and we will make a new layer on top because we are going to paint some clouds not willy clouds it's like it's a sunny day and the snow is evaporating and there's this mist around the mountains we will use this white almost white color and we will use the clouds brush which you can find under elements our brush is at 15% and let's just add some of these mop some of these clouds behind these mountains right along that edge because that's where that water is evaporating causing these mist like clouds to appear now let's blur this layer a little bit so go to the magic wand and thick gauzy and blur and slightly move your pen to the right to let's say four percent and next we will also add some of these clouds in front of our mountains so we need to go to this layer that's the layer with the texture on it click the plus to make a new layer you don't have to clip this or anything now let's start by adding some clouds right here I'm gonna make the brush a little bit smaller I'll go to 10% and add some of these clouds right here and I also want to add some in front of this mountain and I'll grab this blue for that I make the brush bigger again 15% just add some here and again let's blur these so go to the magic wand use gauzy and blur and go to 3% to give these mountains a bit more depth I would like to add another mountain in front of this one and to do that we will go below this mist layer that we just created and click the plus again to create another layer and we will go back to the mono line brush under calligraphy and select this fifth color now let's draw a mountain right in front here again make sure that you close your shape and fill it now it's time to make some magic happen we are going to make the reflection on the ice and to do that we need to group all these layers so first we need to select them all you can do it up by swiping to the right on your layer every single layer and then click group to group them now we will have to duplicate this group now if you are having trouble duplicating this group because perhaps procreated saying hey you can only have this many layers then that's because of your device you might have to decrease your canvas size to be able to duplicate this all now we are going to merge all these layers and my hand is it big enough no we're gonna have to do it in two steps merge everything like this and now we need to flip this layer because the reflection is of course upside down so we'll go to this arrow here and select flip vertical and click the arrow again let's decrease the opacity of this layer so we can see right through it and let's see we can move it down just a little bit like this and go back of course we only want to see the reflection on the ice so we are going to fix that now so let's turn the opacity back up and switch off this layer and we will do that by using the selection tool that's the s-shaped ribbon and we use the freehand tool and I will just follow along this edge of the water to make a selection of that water or ice you don't have to be really tidy about it because we can adjust things later all the way here and then go down and click on that circle to make your selection complete I'll turn on this layer that we just made click it and then select mask now automatically it has masked anything that's outside of the selection that we just made and by using a brush we can easily adjust this mask a little bit let's go to drawing and use that over our brush and while using black you can block some of that reflection am i using white you can paint some back in let's use white to just mess up this edge a little bit I'm not really messing it up giving it a slight texture we don't want that really smooth look you don't want a very sharp edge because that's not the way that actual look in real life so we're just gonna block little parts to make it look more natural to make this reflection look like real ice we are going to use the blur tool I'll make sure that you have this layer selected and that you don't have any other layer selected just this one and then go to the magic wand and we'll use motion blur now if we slide to the right we get this nice blur that makes it look like real ice let's go for fourteen point one or two percent all we need now are some details on the ice to make it look like real ice because of course ice wouldn't be this perfectly smooth surface you would see some scratches on it some parts that are damaged so we'll do that on a new layer by clicking the plus and we will set this layer to add so click the end and then go to add and we will use a brush under painting you will use the dry brush and we will set it to this white almost white color now let's add some scratches to this ice our brush is set to four percent and this is a great brush to add some random stuff on our ice just some parts that are a bit damaged because like I said the surface of this ice it wouldn't be perfectly smooth can make the brush a bit bigger see ten percent for some parts in the foreground here and we'll also use the procreate pencil which you could find under sketching now let's make it five percent and how we can really make those final little details some small scratches let's pick this light blue for some final details on the ice just some lines some scratchy lines to add some realism to this ice you can see this blurry line on the left side because of that motion blur that we use not to fix them to get rid of that you could just make your painting a little bit bigger by selecting everything I swiping to the right and then go to that arrow and be sure to click uniform and you could just drag this handle and make it slightly bigger so you won't see that little edge anymore that's it our wintry landscape I hope you enjoyed the tutorial if you did then you might like these two videos as well I will see you next time for the next digital art tutorial
