page there i don't just share a whole bunch of brushes but also a lot more procreate video tutorials you can actually find an overview of them on my website these are all my beginner level tutorials for instance but now let's get started with this tutorial it has been requested many times so here we go first of all the canvas is 2 300 pixels by 3 000 pixels and for the color profile i'm using srgb as always i have created a color palette for you in case you want to use the same colors as i'm using during the tutorial you can find the link to download the color palette in the description now the first thing we'll do is change our background color we'll go to these two little squares that's the layer menu and click background color and we will pick this first color over here it's a very light blue and now we are going to grab the monoline brush which you can find under calligraphy and for our color we are going to use this color over here that third color in the color palette the opacity of the brush is set to 100 and the size is at 15 percent and now let's draw a circle hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape and then hold one finger on your screen to make it snap to a perfectly round circle now let's fill the shape by dragging in the color and you might need to adjust your color drop threshold in case your paint is spilling all over or when you get a slight edge around your shape now let's make sure that our circle is centered let's go to the arrow up here and make sure you have snapping turned on over here and now you can see that orange line and it'll it'll tell you that we are in the vertical center of the canvas and let's place the head around here and then just click the arrow again now we are going to turn on the symmetry tool you can do that by going to the wrench then to canvas and then turn on drawing guide over here then click edit drawing guide and go to symmetry over here now you see this vertical line that's the symmetry line we can make it slightly lighter let's go for a little pink you can just pick any color you like and you can also adjust the opacity of the line over here i'll go for 18 and then just click done now whatever we paint or do on the left side will also show up on the right side of the painting and the other way around you can see that symmetry is active for this layer by going to the layer menu and checking that layer you can see assisted so symmetry is turned on for this layer now we are going to use the liquify tool we'll go to the magic wand here the adjustments menu and go to liquify make sure you have it set to push pressure is set to max and distortion and momentum are turned off you can play around with the size of your brush here and now we are going to push and pull the face we are going to give it a slightly more straight underside work on these cheeks and slightly adjust the shape so it's not a circle anymore it's more like a very rounded box and now let's give eyes to our character we'll do that on a new layer so we'll go to the layer menu and click the plus for a new layer and i want symmetry to be turned on on this layer as well so we'll click the layer and then turn on drawing assist and now you can see that this layer is assisted as well so symmetry is turned on for our color we are going to use this color over here and now let's create a circle again to create two eyes at the same time hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape and then you can use edit shaper at the top when you let go and you can move these eyes around we'll place them relatively low so the top side of the eye is about halfway of the face what we'll do now is drag in the color into the circle and it'll fill both circles at the same time now i want to remove the lower part of the eye and i want to use the same brush i'm using now i want to use that as an eraser so that's the monoline brush i can do that by clicking and holding the eraser and it'll switch to the monoline brush the opacity of this eraser is set to 100 and the size is at 40 percent and let's erase a little part of the bottom to give our character two little cheeks now we are going to blur these eyes just slightly we'll go to the magic wand the adjustments menu pick gaussian blur set it to layer and now you can drag your finger or your pen to the right to increase the blur we'll go for three and a half percent and then just click the magic wand again now let's give our character two ears we'll go back to layer one and we'll switch back to the skin color and we will draw an ear over here and we want that bottom of the ear to line up with the underside of the eye to about halfway of the eye and then just drop in the color to fill these ears next we'll make a neck for our character let's make a new layer by clicking the plus in the layer menu and drag that layer underneath the head for the color we will pick this color over here which is slightly darker than the head and also make sure that you turn on drawing assist so we can use symmetry so click the layer turn on drawing assist and then draw a neck we'll start at the middle line here a little bit high and then just draw a neck like this and let the lines meet in the middle so when you remove the head when you turn it off you can see that we have a closed shape because only that way you can drag in the color to fill it now my character is a little bit big i want to make it just slightly smaller so let's go to the layer menu and select all of these layers by sliding to the right then going to the arrow tool here and making sure that it's set to uniform now you can drag one of these handles to make it slightly smaller and then make sure that you place it in the center again and then click the arrow again now let's make a shirt for our character let's make a new layer again first click layer 3 then click the plus and place this layer underneath layer 3 for the color we will pick this pink color over here and for the brush we are going to the inking brushes and use the dry ink brush the opacity of the brush is set to a hundred percent and the size is at ten percent and we can actually use drawing assist again let's turn it on let's go to layer four click drawing assist so we can use the symmetry tool again let's start about here behind the neck and then go down to make shoulders and then close it here you can just adjust it a little bit so it's like a dome shape then you can drag in a color to fill the shape make sure you drag the color drop threshold far to the right so you don't get a big white edge around and you can just fill it in a bit more if you have a light edge now i'm going to drag the shirt on top of the neck drag the layer to here and now you see that it's covering the neck we don't want that we want to remove that part of the neck let's click layer three then use select now there's a selection of the neck and i will go back to layer four and you can swipe with three fingers to remove that part on this layer and of course while we are on this layer we can paint over the neck a little bit again creating that color next we are going to start with the hair for our character we want the hair to be behind the head and behind the shirt and behind the neck so let's make a new layer and then drag it underneath those layers and let's turn on drawing assist again so we can use symmetry for the color we are going to use this color over here that's second blue for the brush let's go back to the monoline brush we'll start in the center here just below the shoulders and we'll go up and meet at the top now this really doesn't have to be perfect just as long as you have a shape that looks a bit similar to this then you're fine let's drag in a color to fill the shape and now let's go to the liquify tool let's go to the magic wand click liquify and now you can just adjust the hair you can push and pull it around you can play with the size of the brush and you can adjust it until you have something that you like of course it all still looks a bit silly but believe me it'll all work out now let's go back to the brush i want it to be a little bit more rounded here so let's just go over now we are going to make more hair on top of the head so we'll make a layer on top of all the others let's click the plus and we're making this hair in front of the face i don't want to go outside of that first shape that we made of the hair so let's go to layer five click it and then pick select now we have a selection active and when you have an active selection you're only able to paint inside of that selection so that's great let's go back to layer six and pick this color over here that lighter blue and for the brush we are going to use the script brush the opacity of the brush is at a hundred percent and let's set the size to eight percent now let's start on this side and make a pointy part here you don't have to make a closed shape we're just going to work our way from the left to the right then we'll make a pointy shape here and another one right next to it and then we'll make one over here slightly in front of the eye now we'll make a big one over here make sure that it's closed and we'll make a pointy one going down here and you can make these lines all overlap and don't worry you can just undo anything if you're not liking it make a point you want going down here along the ear and one over here and now we can start filling this hair shape drag in the color you might need to drag your threshold to the left and then click continue filling with recolor you'll get this little crosshair drag it onto an area which you would like to fill and then you can just click the other areas and fill those as well and then let's go back to the brush now you can if you like adjust the hair a little bit you can add some parts make some parts a little bit bigger until you have hair that you like there's no need to get it right straight away and if you want the ends to be a little bit more pointy then you can just click and hold the eraser to make it switch to the current brush you can go over the tips to make them look a little bit more pointy i feel like overall the hair is a little bit too square so we can we can easily adjust that by selecting both of the hair layers so layer six and layer five drag to the right and then go to liquify now you can just push and pull the hair and adjust it a little bit i want it to look a bit more rounded at the top [Music] and that way you can easily adjust the hair now let's work on the eyes first let's make a new layer on top of layer 2 click layer 2 then click the plus for a new layer and let's use symmetry again let's click the layer turn on drawing assist and for the brush let's use the dry ink brush again which you can find under inking and for the color we are going to use this color over here the opacity is still at a hundred percent and the size is still at ten percent and now let's give our character some eyelashes let's start about here and make a swooping motion towards here you can hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape you can also use edit shape in case you need to adjust the arch like that then click the brush again and add some of these eyelashes i'll just make three of them keep it relatively simple and let's also add eyebrows we'll start here a little bit to the right from the beginning of that eyelash and just make an eyebrow like that now we'll switch to this color over here and let's add a little bean shape to the ears just like this a little bean will add a little nose to the center a little bit above the bottom of the eyes and then let's switch to this color the fifth color over here to draw a mouth i want to turn off drawing assist now let's click layer seven and click drawing assist to turn it off and now let's draw a mouth over here a little bit broader than the nose with rounded corners we'll make the top part a little bit thicker [Music] like that now let's continue working on the eyes again we'll make a layer on top of layer two and underneath layer seven so first click layer two then click the plus for a new layer and turn on drawing assist again i want the shape that we are going to make to be inside of that white of the eye so first let's make a selection click layer 2 turn on select and then go back to layer 8. for the color we are going to use this color over here that third color and for the brush we are going to use the monoline brush and now let's draw an oval hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape then use edit shape to change the circle a bit until it looks a bit like this and then drag in the color to fill your shape you might need to adjust the color drop threshold so move your pen to the left if needed and then let's turn off the selection by clicking the s-shape ribbon again now we are going to add pupils so let's make a new layer on top by clicking the plus and we will use this color now that second color over here oh and also make sure that you have layer assist drawing assist turned on of course so we will only have to make one pupil draw an oval hold your pen in place and again use edit shape to adjust it if needed make sure that it's in the center of your iris i'm gonna make it too big i think this is looking nice and then just drag in the color to fill it and our character looks super creepy let's work on that let's go back to layer 8 and let's set it to alpha lock so we won't be able to paint outside of the shape we'll go to the inking brushes again and use the dry ink brush and let's draw an oval hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape and then use edit shape to make a thin line around our iris something like this then you can just click the brush again to get out of that menu now let's merge layer 9 and layer 8 you can do that by pinching them together now we are going to make a new layer on top by clicking the plus and we are going to turn on clipping mask now when you use clipping mask whatever we paint on this layer that is clipped to layer 8 will only show up on layer 8 on these well on this iris and pupil we are going to change the layer blending mode we'll click the n and we'll go up to multiply to add a darker area to the eye we're going to use the soft brush under airbrushing for that i have the opacity set to 50 and the size is at 15 now let's make sure that on this clip layer that we also have strong assist turned on and now let's glaze over the top area of the eye making that slightly darker let's glaze multiple times like that now we are going to make another layer let's click the plus for a new layer set this to clipping mask as well and also turn on drawing assist but this time we won't be using multiply but we will set this layer to color dodge and for the color we are going to use this fourth color over here and glaze over the bottom area of the eye making it nice bright blue now we'll make a new layer again click the plus set it to clipping mask we won't be setting it to drawing assist this time but we will change the layer blending mode this time we'll go for screen now we are going to make a selection let's go to the s-shaped ribbon and set it to freehand and i will make a swooping motion going over the lower half of the eye like this and now let's go to color fill and we'll switch the color to this blue over here and then turn off the selection by clicking the s shape ribbon you can decrease this effect by going to the layer clicking the s and using that slider let's go for 65 now let's make a new layer on top let's click the plus and let's go and use the monoline brush again and for the color we will use pure white so double tap here in this corner which isn't really a corner since it's a circle but double tap over there to select pure white and let's create an oval shape here hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape use edit shape and drag the handles around place it right near the edge and then drag in the color to fill the shape i can duplicate the shape by swiping down with three fingers and then using duplicate now you can move this one to the other eye and then when you go to the layer menu you can merge these two layers by pinching them together now let's merge all of these eye layers together for some final effects you can see that alpha lock is automatically turned on if it's not turned on and you can just click the layer and turn on alpha lock let's turn off drawing assist we don't want symmetry anymore and for the brush let's go to the luminance brushes and use the light pen now the opacity of the brush is at a hundred percent and the size is at fifteen percent and for the color we will use this color over here now let's make a semi-circle here hold your pen in place to make it snap to a quick shape and then you can just adjust it by using edit shape then click the brush to go back and do the same thing on this side hold your pen in place use edit shape and make this nice semi-circle then click the brush again and let's add some extra sparkles the harder you press the bigger the sparkle will become let's do it on this side as well and let's also make a bigger sparkle over here i'm making this cross shape let's do it on both sides just a little cross making it look more sparkly now let's add some shading to the face we'll do that by creating a layer on top of layer one but underneath the eyes let's click the plus for a new layer and let's set it to clipping mask so we won't be painting outside of that face shape for the brush let's go to the soft brush under airbrushing and for the color let's first pick this pinkish color over here to add some blush to her cheeks to do that let's turn on drawing assist first click layer 9 turn on drawing assist then for the brush size let's go for eight percent and go over the cheek area giving her some nice blush next let's add some shadow to the face first let's pick this color over here which we also used for the neck and let's make the brush a little bit bigger 13 and let's go over the top half of the face just above the eyes and now we'll go even darker we'll use this color over here the fifth one we'll go to the layer menu and turn off drawing assist click the layer turn off drawing assist and we'll make the brush a bit smaller let's go for four percent and we'll go along the edges of the hair adding some drop shadow there because the hair it's blocking the light so we'll get some shadow on the face there also around the ears there will be some shadow and just go along the hair over here as well [Music] this is immediately giving more depth to our illustration [Music] you can make the brush smaller three percent for some more precision and now let's add some color to the mouth i'll make a selection first by going to the s-shaped ribbon and then make a free hand selection of that mouth area turn off color fill we don't want a brown looking mouth then for the color let's use this color over here and let's glaze over this area making the top area a little bit darker like that and then turn off the selection by clicking the s-shaped ribbon again now let's do the same thing for the neck let's just go to the neck layer layer three turn off drawing assist but turn on alpha lock so we will only be able to paint on the shape our paint won't be showing up outside of it first let's pick the light color that we use for the face we'll glaze over the lower area lightening that up a little bit and then we'll add a shadow to the top area so we'll use this fifth color and then add a tiny shadow underneath here now the face is already looking super cute let's work on the hair first i want to work on the bottom here let's turn off drawing assist here we don't want symmetry anymore you know what let's also turn off that line you can barely see it but it's there let's go to the wrench then to canvas and then turn off drawing guide drawing guide can still be active but we won't be seeing that vertical line anymore now first let's use the eraser it's set to script that's fine and let's erase a part of the hair over here making it look a bit more playful let's make the brush a bit bigger seven percent i'll erase a little bit of this area and we can add a little indent here and now i want to add some lines on top of the hair let's create a layer on top of the others for that on top of layer six let's go and use the inking brush that dry ink brush and let's use this color that second color for this top area of the hair let's just go along the edges adding some of these lines we'll follow the edge and go up a little bit more making this really look like strands of hair now you don't have to be super tidy you can look a bit playful you might need a couple of tries that's okay you can just undo your brush stroke and start over just follow the lines you see now i need to undo my stroke follow the lines like that we can actually make this one a little bit longer and i will do the same thing for the bottom area i'll use this darker blue and let's add some lines here [Music] get some curved curved lines for a playful look next we are going to add some shading and some lighting to the hair we will start with layer five that's the hair in the background behind the head let's just turn on alpha lock so we won't be able to paint outside of that shape and let's go and use the soft brush under airbrushing we will use this dark blue let's make the brush a little bit bigger let's go for eight percent and let's add a dark area just behind the head where there would be more shadow just go over like this and now we are going to blend it a little bit by using the smudge tool go to the smudge tool then go to the abstract brushes over here and use the membrane brush it is set to 100 opacity and the size is at 55 and then just drag up from the bottom up to the top a bit so we'll get this subtle hair like texture you can also go from the top to the bottom just follow the flow of the hair adding this texture as if you are combing the hair over here we are going to do the same thing for the top part of the hair let's go to layer six let's turn on alpha lock over here as well and for the color let's use this one and we'll go back to the soft brush and we are going to make a stroke over here just make a little bit of a rounded stroke make multiple ones to make it lighter as if she has this headband and i will use the smudge tool again and let's pretend we're combing the hair again following that flow of the hair gently combing it and you can go upwards but also downwards blending that hair in giving that a nice texture so you can either drag that light onto the darker area or that darker color onto that light area and just follow the shape of the hair so we are making rounded motions here going up and down following the hair until you have a nice hairy texture now for some extra touches we are going to make a new layer on top here set that to color dodge so click the end then go to color dodge just to be sure let's turn on clipping mask so our paint won't show up outside of the hair and we'll still be using the soft brush let's make it a bit smaller let's go for three percent and let's create some highlights on the hair making multiple strokes just add a few make these little dabs and some over here just don't overdo it and let's go back to the smudge tool and just gently smudge these only a little bit because these bright highlights they just look really cool so you don't want to smudge them out that's looking great now let's go for some final touches on the shirt let's go to the shirt layer let's turn on alpha lock so we won't be painting outside of the shape and for the brush let's go to the inking brushes again and use the dry ink brush let's pick this dark red and let's create a color first symmetry is still turned on for this layer so that's pretty handy here let's make an arm going up to about here then let's turn off symmetry by clicking the layer turning off drawing assist and let's make some lines here around the color just to add some more interest on this shirt now i want to add a shape to the background i want to make the entire the entire character a little bit smaller for that let's select all of the layers by sliding to the right then going to the move tool the little arrow making it a little bit smaller place it in the center and then go back to the layers let's make a new layer by clicking the plus and drag this layer all the way to the bottom and for the color we are going to pick this light purplish bluish color you're still using that dry ink brush and we are going to make a shape behind our character just a bit around it like this you can adjust it until you have a shape that you like and then drag in the color to fill the shape you might need to adjust the color drop threshold again and you might need to fix some edges paint over some areas to fill everything and again you can use the liquify tool of course by going to the magic wand using liquify and you can just push and pull some areas changing this shape very easily now to place the character inside of the shape we will need to select the shape so click that layer turn on select and now pick invert then we'll go to layer 4 with the shirt on it and we are going to erase this part by swiping with three fingers for a little extra i want to add some sparkles to our background let's go to layer 12. let's first go to the luminance brushes use the light pen and let's pick this very light color and let's just add some sparkles here and there to complement the sparkles in her eyes just some random sparkles vary the pressure that you use now for some extra sparkles we are going to use the sparkle brush that is part of the treasure chest brush pack it's over here let's place some bigger sparkles i have the size set to four percent but you can play around with that let's also try seven percent for some bigger ones and that's it there you have your cute little character i'm looking forward to seeing your character of course you can play around with colors with hairstyles with expressions clothing and don't forget to share it on instagram of course tag me in the image not just in the description and i will see you next time for the next you can draw this video tutorial thanks for watching and let me know if you want to see more tutorials like this one
