you can draw this in procreate you can draw this landscape with a tree in procreate all you have to do is follow my tutorial which i have specially developed so that anyone can follow them even if you have no experience at all with drawing or with procreate we will be using free brushes only these are the brushes that are already in the procreate app plus two brushes which you can find in my special treasure chest which is full of special procreate freebies all you have to do is go to freefromflow.com to get access to this special treasure chest and you won't just find free appropriate brushes but also color palettes a special artwork flow prompt list and my ebook about color theory and the great thing is that over time i will continue to add freebies to that treasure chest but for now let's focus on this you can draw this video tutorial in which we will paint this landscape with a tree and don't forget that once you have reached the end of this video once you have completed this tutorial do share your work on instagram and if you want a chance to have your work featured in the next you can draw this video then be sure to tag me in the image on instagram and not just in the description that way i will be able to find your work and if you have reached the end of the you can draw this playlist if you have watched all the tutorials and you want more then you might want to check out my patreon page where i share a lot more video tutorials ranging from beginner level to more advanced levels for this tutorial i have made a canvas which is 3000 by 2000 pixels and the color profile is set to srgb if you want the colors to match then you might want to set your canvas to this color profile as well and i have also created a color palette which you can find through the link in the description and download for free of course first thing we'll do for this tutorial is create a gradient for our background we'll pick this second color here in the color palette for our brush we will go to the airbrushing set and use the soft brush let's just fill our canvas by dragging in this blue color and now we are going over this with a lighter blue we'll pick this bright blue here that fourth color and now we will go over the center of our canvas to make that area lighter the opacity of the brush is set to 40 and the size is at well around 20 now let's just go over the center area making these horizontal strokes and since the opacity is pretty low we can slowly build this up and gradually make it lighter don't go all the way to the top until you got like this thick stroke in the middle and this one we will blur we will go to the magic wand and go to gaussian blur and set it to layer now you can drag your pen or your finger to the right like this and blur your layer let's go all the way to around 26 and get a nice blur and you can just click that magic wand again to get out of that menu next we'll start creating some mountains and we'll do this on a new layer we'll go to the layer menu by clicking these two little squares and click the plus to create a new layer to create these mountains we are going to make use of the selection tool and you can find that under the s-shaped ribbon and we will use the rectangle selection option and i want the mountains to be right in the center of our canvas so we'll make a selection just start here above your canvas on the left drag it down until you have selected the top half of your canvas maybe a little bit higher and while this selection is active we will only be able to paint inside of the selection and not outside of the selection i will pick a brush by clicking the brush and go to calligraphy and pick the monoline brush the opacity of this brush is set to 100 and the size is well it's at around 35 36 but you can just play around with that first we'll make a mountain range on the left and we will pick this first color over here in our color palette and we'll start at well around one-third one-fourth of this top area and let's just create a wobbly line from left to right to around the center of well of the horizon and now you can just drag in the color to fill your shape now let's create another mountain range in front of this one and we'll make a new layer for that so let's click the plus to create a new layer on top of that one for the color we will pick this third color over here we are still using a monoline brush and let's start a little bit left of the center of our canvas and again make a wobbly line let's go up a bit and you can just use your imagination to create a mountain range here and again simply drag in the color to fill your shape oh and in case your entire area your entire canvas gets filled when you try to fill the shape then make sure that you adjust the color fill threshold when you fill you can drag your pen to the left and the right to adjust this color drop threshold now that we have our mountain range we can start spicing them up and adding some texture to them let's turn off the selection because well we're finished with that we have our mountain range and now let's go to that first mountain range we made and we'll click this layer and set it to alpha lock now we will only be able to paint on the mountain shape and won't be able to go outside of it for our brush we will go to the textures brushes and use dove lake for the color we will pick the second color over here the brush opacity is set to a hundred percent and the size is at well i can barely see it i think it's 20 and now let's drop in some darker texture on our mountain adding a little bit of interest to this mountain range don't add too much just a little bit mostly to the left side of our mountain range and we'll do the same for our second mountain range again make sure that you click the layer and select alpha lock for the color we will use this darker color over here and again just go over that mountain range and add some interesting texture there mostly focusing on the left side just add some subtle texture now this is a way to make sure that whatever you paint will only show up on the shape that you created but there's another way you can also create a new layer and use clipping mask let's go to layer 2 we are going to add some more lighting and texture there and then click the plus to create a new layer and this one we will set to clipping mask is click the layer and select clipping mask and whatever we paint on this layer that is clipped will only show up on our mountain range shape and using clipping mask instead of alpha lock can be useful if you want to be able to adjust your textures to be able to adjust anything that you're adding to move it around or erase it without ruining your mountain range but of course you do end up with more layers than when you use alpha lock for our brush we will go to the artistic brushes this time and use hearts and for our color we will use this warm reddish grayish color the brush is set to a hundred percent opacity and the size is at around two percent in this painting i imagine that the light is coming from the right side so we will focus our light areas on the right sides of the mountain range to be able to create a combination of crisp edges and more texturized edges i will be using the selection tool so we will be going to the s-shaped ribbon again and this time we will use free hand now i'm imagining that these are multiple mountains and i will imagine that this line is going down here and that this is a mountain so we'll select that and now we can light up this edge of the selection because remember when we have a selection we can only paint inside of that selection so now let's pick our brush by clicking the brush and let's add a little bit of light to the sides of the mountain now i actually want to make it even lighter so i'll pick this last color here in the color palette i think that will work nicely on this mountain over here and i'm making these vertical strokes over this area adding some texture to this mountain here and because of that selection that edge will remain nice and crisp now if we click the s shape ribbon again you can see that nice edge that we created and let's just continue moving to the right on this mountain range let's click the s shape ribbon again and make a selection here as well just click that circle to close the selection and move to the brush again to be able to add some light to this mountain over here and i'm making vertical strokes adding light touches and you can click the s shape ribbon again to get out of the selection menu let's make another selection over here go to the brush by clicking the brush and add these vertical strokes and we can also add some light to this area here but we don't really need a selection we can just light up this right side of that mountain now let's move to the other mountain range let's create a layer with clipping mask there as well first click layer 3 then click the plus for a new layer click that new layer and select clipping mask now let's go to the selection tool again by clicking the s-shape ribbon and now let's make some selections to add light to this mountain range first i'll go from this top here and make a selection going down here loop around and click that circle and then pick your brush and let's pick that warmer color here first and now let's go over this area of the mountain adding a nice warm glow now we can switch to that lighter color that last color here in the color palette for some even lighter touches and then click the s-shaped ribbon to get out of there again and you can see that it's like as if this mountain is behind this one over here and of course you don't need those crisp edges everywhere you can just play around let's pick that warm color again and you can lighten up this right side of this oh a peak of the mountain for instance just keep it subtle let's also pick the lighter color that last one in the color palette and we can lighten up this peak as well and let's use a selection for this area let's go to the s shape ribbon again let's go and make a selection like this a bit of a rounded selection and let's move to that warm color and again make these vertical strokes lightening up this area of the mountain i'm following that shape of the mountain now let's pick the lighter one again for some lighter touches and click the s shape ribbon to get out of the selection again now we have some nicely textured mountains for our painting i feel like the bottom part of these mountains they are looking a bit too crisp i want to blur that area a little bit to do that we are going to merge these mountain layers because we are finished the texture is looking good so we can merge them to reduce the amount of layers we have so just pinch them together to merge them before we can blur any area we need to turn off alpha lock otherwise the blur would only happen within that that alpha locked shape so click alpha lock to turn it off and now let's go to the magic wand and use gaussian blur and this time we won't be selecting the layer but we will be using pencil and for the brush we will use the soft brush under airbrushing let's make it pretty small perhaps five percent and let's go over that bottom area of the mountains blurring that lower area [Music] you can just use your finger and adjust the amount of blur that you just painted in [Music] i think around 60 looks nice and then just click the magic wand to get out of the menu next let's work on the reflection of these mountains the reflection of the mountains on the water to create a reflection we will want to duplicate our mountain layer so let's swipe to the left and click duplicate now let's go to the bottom layer and then click the arrow over here to go to the move tool you can go to uniform and then click flip vertical and now we can drag this flipped version we can drag it down just make sure that you turn on magnetics that'll make it easier so you won't go well to the sides and just drag it down like this and we can go for something like this and have that flipped version underneath our not flip version then click the arrow to get out of the menu again now this certainly doesn't look like a realistic looking reflection yet we will want to blur it a bit to make it look more like a watery reflection to do that we'll go to the magic wand and use motion blur and pick layer now you can drag in any direction actually to adjust the the angle of the motion blur we will want a horizontal motion blur so just drag your pen to the right to create a horizontal slight motion blur let's go for 20 and now let's turn the opacity of the layer down just slightly so we'll go to the layer menu click the n and let's drop it to around 94 i want to add some light to the water and we'll create a new layer for that so let's click the plus or a new layer and i want to add some light to that that area between the reflection and the real mountains and i want to make sure that we will make horizontal strokes only and there's an easy way to do that you can go to the wrench then go to canvas turn on drawing guide and go to edit drawing guide now if we turn on assisted drawing you can only make horizontal and vertical strokes but we really don't want to see this grid so let's turn down the opacity of this grid so it's not bugging us and then click done for our brush we will still be using the soft brush and for the color we will pick this bright blue that third color in the color palette the opacity is still at 40 and the size is at five percent now let's make a stroke here at the top maybe another stroke and just lighten that up just slightly we can go even a little bit lighter let's pick that lighter blue that fourth color in the color palette i want to go a little bit smaller with a brush let's go to three percent and add just a little bit more light to that top part it's looking way more like a reflection now now let's go and add our tree you can find the tree and the special treasure chest brush set like i said you can find it at freefromflow.com all you have to do is sign up to get access to lots of brushes color palettes a prompt list and my special ebook about color theory here we have our bear tree brush let's pick that and for the color let's pick this dark brown here at the bottom in our color palette the opacity of this brush is at 100 and the size is well i have it around 89 but it doesn't really matter because we will be transforming it first let's create a layer for our tree we will want that to be on top of all the others so first click layer two then click the plus and now let's drop it in now the tree is pretty big so let's go to the move tool to make it a bit smaller make sure that it's set to uniform and i also want to flip it so let's click flip horizontal and now let's move it around and make it bigger and smaller until it's in a spot where we like it i'm going to turn off snapping well magnetics so i can freely move it around i think this size is nice but i also want to change the shape a little bit and we can use warp for that and find it here and you can move parts of the tree around a bit twisting it until you have a different looking shape that way you can use these stamp like brushes as a base but still turn it into your own thing just use it as a base besides warp you can also turn off the move tool by clicking the arrow and go to the magic wand and use liquify that's another way to twist your tree a bit and adjust the shape until it's something that you like i want it to look nice and twisted so you can just push and pull parts of your tree i want to go down towards the water a bit that's almost touching it and finally you can also adjust your tree by using both the brush and the eraser i will be using a brush that you can find under inking let's go down to inking that's the dry ink brush and while using the same color you can add stuff to your tree i have it set to nine percent and the opacity is at a hundred percent and it's nicely textured you can just add some parts to your tree you can even add some branches i also want to remove some some parts some of these branches are just a little bit too much so i'll use the eraser and to make sure that the eraser is also set to this dry ink brush you can just click and hold the eraser option and it will set get set to the current brush so now when we use it it's also the dry ink brush and it'll give a nice texture to the edges and i'll remove some of these these branches that i think are a bit too much it's getting a bit too busy with all these branches so we can clean it up a little bit [Music] i want to remove these ones at the bottom for instance and perhaps clean it up at the top here a little bit i think we have a nice looking base for our tree here next we are going to add some leaves i have another brush in the treasure chest which we will use for that and that's the foliage brush for the color we will use this color over here that orangey brownish color the size well the opacity is set to 100 and the size is set to seven percent first we'll add some leaves behind our bare trees so we'll have to make a layer that is underneath it so first let's click the plus for a new layer and then drag it underneath our bare tree and now let's just add some fluffs of leaves not sure if that's really a word but i think they look like fluffs and focus on the outer edges of your tree don't go and add lots of like leaves there that just looks weird so focus on the outer areas that's where most of the leaves are and just drop in a little base add some over here just some little fluffs let's also add some lighter leaves so we'll pick that yellowish color over here to add some lighter ones and now that we have our base for our leaves behind the tree we are going to add a layer in front of our bare tree so we'll have to make a layer that's on top of that one so first click layer five click the plus for a new layer and now we can add some leaves over here i'll just be using the lighter color the orangey color and again focus on those well the outer edges of the tree and we'll be covering some of those bare branches but you don't want to be covering them all that would look weird as well you want to see some of those branches and see them through the leaves this foliage brush has a slight transparency these leaves look a little bit transparent if you want them to look more opaque what you can just do is duplicate your layer by sliding to the left click duplicate and that way you have more opaque brushes you can just merge this layer and you can do the same thing for the layer behind the bare tree duplicate it and then just merge it if you want more opaque leaves next i want to work on the tree trunk a little bit and add some lighting there so let's go to layer five which has that tree on it and let's turn on alpha lock so we will only be able to paint on that tree shape for the brush we will go to the dry ink brush again which you can find under inking and for the color we will pick this light color over here this second color in the color palette and like i said earlier the light i'm imagining is coming from the right side here and it's hitting that right side of the tree let's zoom in a little bit and let's add some light touches to that right side of the tree let's just go over that edge and give it a little rim light just imagine where that light would hit that side of the tree we can add a little bit of texture as well so here on this side the light would also hit just a tiny bit on the right side of those branches perhaps a little bit here at the top of this branch this way you can turn a brush that is actually a stamp turn it into something that your own that has more realism that extra little touch now let's go a little bit lighter and pick this color over here for even lighter touches where that light is hitting the tree over here just a little bit we can do the same with a dark color we can pick this fourth color over here and darken up the left side of the tree a little bit add a little bit of a shadow there [Music] just to the left sides of the branches and just this tiny touch really adds to our tree now of course our tree needs a reflection as well let's group our tree layers by swiping to the right on the layers click group and now let's duplicate this group so we'll slide to the left click duplicate and then we'll merge this bottom layer all this bottom group will merge these layers and this will be our reflection just like with the mountains we'll go to the move tool and click flip vertical now let's first drag it down so we'll go to uniform and let's turn on magnetics again so we will be able to more easily drag it down in a straight line and let these bottom parts let them touch like that and now let's warp it a little bit so let's click warp and let's pull it a little bit distorting the reflection just slightly let's zoom out a little bit just a little bit of a distorted reflection just make sure that you don't go and distort it all over the place just keep it subtle and then just click the arrow to get out of this menu now we'll want to blur this reflection just like that what we did with the mountains and we want the areas close to the tree to be less blurred than the area here at the bottom so we will use the pencil option again let's go to the magic wand use motion blur and set it to pencil now let's pick that airbrush again that soft brush and let's go over it let's make it a little bit bigger let's go for nine small nine or eight percent now let's go over the tree and now let's decide for the blur we use our finger and slide it to the right now let's go for 20 around 20 and we'll go over this lower area a bit more to make that blur stronger there now finally let's add a little bit of a gaussian blur so we'll go to the magic wand again click gaussian blur and let's do it on the entire layer let's slide to the right just slightly let's go for two and a half percent and then click the magic wand again to get out of that menu i can see that my tree isn't exactly touching the the real tree so let's go to the magic wand and use liquify to gently push it so that it's nicely touching i'll make the brush a bit smaller [Music] we want it to nicely merge there now let's click the magic wand again to get out of the menu there we have a nice reflection i also want to adjust the opacity of this layer but i want that area close to the tree i want that to be a bit more opaque than the area over here just like with the blur so to control that i will be using a layer mask let's click the layer click mask to add a layer mask and now by using black we can mask parts of this reflection layer we'll do that with the brush that we're already using the soft brush and the opacity is still at forty percent the size is at ten percent and let's just go over that bottom area a bit making that more transparent just a little bit now for the final touches on the water i want to add a bit of a dark blue let's add a layer on top of all the others by going to that top layer clicking the plus and we'll just use this brush that we're already using that soft brush and we'll pick this dark blue over here and i just want to darken up that lower area a bit now let's make the brush a little bit bigger let's go for 23 now darken up this edge a bit and on this side just gently now finally for the final touch let's add a little bit of a watery texture we'll make a new layer for that again by clicking the plus and for the brush we will go to elements and use the oceans brush and for the color we will pick this second blue color in the color palette for this brush i want to make horizontal lines only and to make sure we are only making horizontal lines we can use drawing assist again we used that earlier for that light area there near the horizon now you don't have to go to the menu again to turn on drawing guides you can just go to the layers click the layer and turn on drawing assist now we can only make horizontal and vertical lines on this assisted layer just like the layer over here with that light well white line so let's do it let's use our brush our oceans brush and let's just go over here oh and of course you'll want to know what the brush size is the opacity is set to 65 and the size is at 30 and let's just go over and add a slight touch of ocean a slight touch of watery texture just making multiple strokes adding that slight texture and that's it there you have your landscape with the tree i hope you have enjoyed following this tutorial and i hope you won't forget to go to freefromflow.com and check out all the free procreate goodies that i have put in the treasure chest i have been working on the content of the treasure chest for months now so i really hope you will enjoy it i want to thank you for watching and i'll see you next time for the next you can draw this video tutorial
