in today's video I'm going to show you how to properly use AMD fluid motion frames also known as ammf and you might ask well isn't it just a slider that I have to activate to enjoy the frame generation well technically yes in reality no firstly you need to understand four things about ammf the first one is that ammf generates fake frames that then are injected into the game and that happens because those frames are not produced inside the game engine more or less like Frey FSR 3 frame generation but since it isn't implemented inside the game but instead into the drivers it has a bigger input latency and might cause some more motion artifacts due to the inability of reading the game's motion vectors maybe this isn't a thing anymore but I believe it still is exactly the same way I believe you should take a look at today's sponsor today's sponsor is maximum settings a cloud-based gaming service where you won't need to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade your RPC or a personal nuclear plant to Bo up your system just do it and for as low as $9.95 Canadian dollar a month you can play the most recent games on your computer even if your Hardware isn't prepared sign up today for your full Linux gaming PC with no resource sharing and start enjoying high level gaming on any PC also the generated frames the number of generated frames basically the final frames that you're having can only be read by amd's own overlay at least so far it is not supported by third- party apps meaning that if you're using Ms After Burner you won't be able to read those frames you need to use amds overlay the second one is that ammf is not meant for competitive or fastpaced titles and this is the case because a FMF disables itself for a moment when you do very fast Mouse SL camera movements meaning that as soon as you start playing fast FMF won't be working at all and on top of that it adds much more input latency than FSR 3 frames generation and it will deliver a bigger number of motion artifacts at least usually because once again it doesn't have access to the game's motion vectors and the third one is that in order for a FMF to work properly your game needs to be running with a decent frame pacing if your gaming experience is already full of stutters ammf won't help at all as the frame pacing is completely broken already and one thing that you can do to help with those frame pacing issues is to actually use radon chill or Ms after bir or in this case rtss to actually lock your frame rates below the maximum that you can get that usually helps getting a smoother frame pacing and the fourth one is that a FMF is made to work with freesync variable refresh rate meaning that if you're using VNC to actually lock your frame rates your final frame rates to your monitor's refresh rate you'll have a stuttery experience a messy one actually and in case you get out of your monitor's freyn range when using ammf you'll have tearing and well you wanton don't really feel the smoothness difference as you're outside of the monitor's range so imagine you have a 120 FPS monitor if you're having 140 FPS with FMF it means that you're having around 70 FPS without it so in order to be inside your monitor's range you need to lock your base frame rate to 59 FPS with rtss and then the frames with ammf will be 118 FPS which will put you inside your monitor's range and this might seem hard to follow but don't wor because I'll show you live doing things live let's go into it so guys we actually have to test this right now like this I can't be actually just recording the the well the video and looking at the Monitor and there's a reason for that because uh the amds overlay can still be recorded with AMD I tried for example using OBS and several other software um and it just won't record the the amd's overlay and since I don't have a decent uh a decent recording card maybe I should get one a decent one this time well that's why I'm doing this so I'm showing you both the both the the desktop here recorded and then what you see here uh which is where you're going to see for example the frames with with uh the frame generation and without frame generation Riva ther statistic server on the right side and um the MDS overlay on the left side okay I'll be interchanging in between the normal one and the that you're seeing here so as we see uh we are running now cyberpunk 2077 1440p uh with FAL FX super resolution 2.1 and we're we're having like 130 something like that around the 130 140 FPS 120 it depends on the scene of course but it is always over 120 FPS which is quite normal for a card like this now if you look here in the the monitor you have on Ms After Burner you have 128 FPS and on the amds overlay you have once again the same 127 127 exactly the same FPS now as soon as we go and we go here to AMD fluid motion frames and we activate AMD fluid motion frames as soon as we do that okay you can immediately see one thing here so on the MS After Burner we have 100 15 and on the FPS counter of the AMD radien software you have 220 something 230 FPS and this is because well we have less FPS now because fluid motion frames actually well they cost something to to make it work they cost FPS but at the same time they produce double the the FPS that you're having right now so uh once again like I told you before it feels kind of odd feels kind of odd because once again uh I'm outside my monitors refresh rate ref fresh rate sorry which is 160 HZ and since I'm having way more than 160 frames well it kind of feels OD and I have well motion artifacts not many but I do have tearing and I can notice it in real life maybe you can't in the video of course but as you see things are different so since I have uh 160 HZ refresh rate what I have to do in order to make it work properly okay once again tearing is go to Ms After Burner for example and lock the frame rates to 78 or even 79 I can do 79 you can see that we now have 79 in Ms After Burner which are the base frames and then we have 158 FPS with frame generation once again 79 base frames and 158 final frames and those final frames since they are 158 they are still inside my monitor's refresh rate so I can definitely see it working better now way smoother because it is now inside the free sync range and I'm using free sync so we we also have the micro stutter rate for example which is 0% means that the game is playing smooth once again way smoother than playing at at at only 79 FPS it is still smoother it disables a bit for itself U it disables itself for a bit once oh nice bug it's floating she's floating for cyber Punk it definitely plays well if you move the camera too fast well it will disable it itself for a let's say a second half a second but even then it is better considerably better than than using uh than using the base frame rate and I can tell you right away that even in terms of of smoothness and in in terms of frame frame latency let's say frame generation lag it is now working with 21 milliseconds of frame generation lag but it's working fine I mean you can feel it but it's definitely not that bad definitely not that bad now we're playing pal world and once again as you can see we have the same base frames 79 which I locked before the same base frames on each side so same base frames for Ms After Burner and for the amds overlay as soon as I go and for example enable the fluid motion frames bam it goes up automatically to 158 now I can tell you IM immediately that's uh even playing pal World well we we are having some stutters but as soon as the stutters go away the experience is still better yeah better like this than disabling it let me just see once again well you know that there's information missing there yeah definitely as soon as we activate once again fluid motion frames and you have done double the frame rate now 158 yeah definitely much much smoother bam bam bam bam yeah definitely you can play it very smoothly with FMF here as soon as once again you have a decent frame pacing so in order to not have frame pacing issues you have to to load some areas before um because of the shed cash loading and if you're playing with an AMD card it is advised with pal world to actually to actually play the game with arct X2 you'll lose a bit of FPS but the frame time will be much better let me call my Pokemon bam he's already messing up with the other with the other [Laughter] [Applause] Pokemons so as soon as I go to 59 we have 59 base frames but we have 118 frames with uh with fluid motion frames so with only 50 59 frames we can see some well I can I can definitely see that there is some motion there are some motion artifacts because once again it needs at least 60 frames per second to play well um and in some situations yeah and in some situations it is actually like that it needs it needs more frames at higher resolutions with 1440p and above you actually need a round you actually need a around 70 70 something FPS for it to work properly if you're playing at 1080p 60 FPS will be enough now we're running Starfield once again ultra settings no upscaling whatsoever so no upscaling borderless enabled blah blah blah anything to to maximum besides motion blur fluid motion frames frame generation lag in this game is a bit higher so we have 27 milliseconds of of lag from frame generation and the micro stutter rate is a bit sometimes so that means that uh the frame generation technique won't work properly and we'll have more motion artifacts so as soon as I turn the the camera fast what will happen is that it will disable it but as soon as I go for example like this yeah if I'm playing decently well it will be much better than playing with you with the usual 59 Bas FPS just feels much smoother doesn't feel like I have more FPS per se but definitely feels much smoother if I lock the fps to something a bit higher once again since we're running 1440p we need at least 70 FPS according to AMD if I lock to 79 once again the difference is just massive 79 frames once again yeah it it just feels like another game we still have motion artifacts if you can see here for example yeah we still have some lagging effect yeah they're still there it's basically on the floor in this game the floor is where we have more more motion artifacts but besides that it works decently well now this part is really heavy so we're having only 63 64 FPS and once again it works decently well it works decently well and just to finalize the testing we have The Witcher 3 we're running 1440p Ultra wide using FSR 2 quality mode let's start without rate racing in this case iio there is absolutely no reason for me to use a FMF unless I have let's say a a 360 HZ monitor if I have a 360 HZ monitor then AF FMF is a must otherwise there's absolutely no reason for me to use it because if I can have 140 130 anything over 120 FPS base without the nether frame generation that's what I want because well it it will just feel much much better definitely it's yeah just much better but imagine let's say that you are using rate racing as soon as soon as you enable rate racing everything enabled with global illumination to Performance we have 80 FPS something something like that so the FPS go down as low as 70 in some scenarios depending where I'm looking at in the series it will go as low as 70 72 once again I go there I lock the fps to 79 or I can go 78 then I go to gaming wicher three and I enable fluid motion frames as soon as soon as I enable fluid motion frames we have once again 78 FPS base and 155 1556 with a frame generation and we do have some motion artifacts but overall it is decent if I look for example at the at the legs I can see that there is there are lots of motion artifacts for example here if we look at the legs it actually annoys me I wouldn't be able to play like this actually but uh if this wasn't the case uh I would be definitely using AF FMF because overall it feels better but once again now we're having 65 FPS and 65 FPS just isn't enough for 1440p especially for 1440p Ultra wide where we have even more pixels um so the higher amount of pixels you have well the better Bas FPS you should have in order to use FMF frame generation works much better here but a FMF well yeah not that that much so I would prefer in this case in case of The Witcher 3 I would simply prefer to play without any kind of of a frame generation I mean it seems that in The Witcher 3 we still have some issues I don't really know why we do uh lots of motion artifacts but in games like cyber Punk 2077 in games like pal world or even in Starfield feel it works decently well so it doesn't work well in all games but in some it does it's up to you if it is working well in your game just do it for example racing games maybe uh or something close to that if it is working well do it but overall overall in games where you move the camera a lot ammf is not what you want but instead frame FSR 3 frame generation FSR 3 frame generation will work much better in these case scenarios because it has access to the game's motion vectors so it doesn't disable itself when you are moving really really fast the camera yeah and well guys that's all for today's video hope the video actually helped you in some way especially using am am especially using ammf because it seems that some people do not understand how it works properly and some people actually use ammf b or outside of the monitor's refresh rate so that will lead to tearing and tearing will seem like motion artifact effects and th those things together won't lead to a smooth experience and like I told you you need to have a good frame pacing to to begin with in order for ammf to work properly and the same for FSR 3 frame generation and once again people are trying to use ammf in competitive games and it just won't work well because as soon as you move your mouse or your or you do or you do a camera movement really really fast ammf will disable itself for one second close to that uh and you'll definitely feel the difference in smoothness I don't know why AMD does this I believe that they have some issues for now with fast movement um with fast movement with a FMF and I believe that's because once again they don't since it is on the drivers it doesn't have access to the game's motion vectors so uh if they actually enabled the the AFM for fast movements it would become really really messy and maybe maybe once again that that's why they're doing what they're doing but with uh FSR 3 frame generation you can move your mouse as you want because it won't disable itself just to state things out once again thank you very much for watching don't forget
