[Music] hey what's up everybody welcome to found flicks on this inning explained we're looking at the long-awaited latest entry in the conjuring universe the devil made me do it this time we follow the warrens on their newest case where a young boy is accused of murder claiming demonic possession as his defense in court this forces the warrens into a supernatural inquiry unlike anything they've ever seen before first off here are some of my thoughts and issues on the film and it sure feels like it's been quite some time since we've checked in with the paranormal investigating couple ed and lorraine warren as the conjuring franchise has exploded immensely since their initial debut i mean we got three annabelle's movie before the third one of the mainline series sure they made cameos and other stuff like that but for me there was always a kind of pedestal that the actual conjuring movies were on compared to the rest of the series so it was with obvious trepidation that i approached the devil made me do it as we lost both our director and arguably mastermind of the series james wan but also the first two films writing duo it felt inevitable that there would be some kind of disappointment from that high water mark after seeing the third one i can safely say that is the case don't get me wrong it's not a bad movie or anything i've seen plenty of stuff a thousand times worse than this recently and thankfully the heart and soul of the movies patrick wilson and vera farmiga are as electric as ever the movies really do rely on their relationship and luckily that still works effortlessly here perhaps the most grievous offense to me as if the devil made me do it is simply not scary the actual setup for the scares feel very drawn out and ultimately underwhelming this is my biggest takeaway there's only so many rat fake outs and nothing events until things become tedious i did consider if i was just being jaded as usual as not much spooks me nowadays and thusly it was time for a re-watch of the first one i wanted to know would i be similarly underwhelmed i mean i wasn't jumping off the couch with every gag or anything but it was definitely operating on a much higher level of sophistication and craft than this one that is certainly unfortunate but where my own particular pointless bone to pick is in how they utilize the warren's daughter judy we had another whole ass movie annabelle comes home that was all about judy being left alone with their artifact room and everything comes alive she's gotta deal with it amusing haunted house style havoc ensues which brings us to the always twisty timeline of the series comes home took place in 1972 while devil baby do it is the most contemporary of the series in 1981 so several years after comes home judy is like 18 or something and it's just weird and totally unfulfilling to me that after that she wasn't more involved in their cases why even set up the whole comes home thing in the first place unless you're gonna pay it off he literally is in one scene here and has a one word line daddy and is never seen or mentioned again it was just totally baffling to me apparently she's in college or something it was just like oh when i was a kid i went through this whole crazy paranormal thing just like my parents and then right back to being normal i guess i thought we were trying to build a franchise here you know they should have had her as a curious and eager new associate on their case and then she goes too far or whatever the parents got a set of boundaries and all that kind of stuff there's a ton that they could have mined here all naturally building to a spin-off where she's at college or whatever and a roommate is seeing ghosts or something boom whole other spin-off on your hands it writes itself voice that's all i'm saying because this gives me nothing she's completely shoved aside and for some reason that just really bugged me because there's all this unfulfilled potential story-wise and money-wise and isn't that really the whole point here your movies have made 2 billion money's at least part of it you know anyway those are my biggest issues at hand and while the devil made me do it as a stark drop in quality from the first two conjurings it again isn't wholly bad at least they are trying to do something a bit different than the first two even when it comes to the antagonist itself so let's dive into the warren's latest adventure and the devil made me do it breaking down the story who the antagonist is and their surprising connection to annabelle as well as explaining the ending when we reunite with the warrens in the summer of 1981 they're already deep into a case a young boy david seems to be possessed by a demon the family gathered around as ed reads through scripture the family is at their wit's end but luckily the church approved the exorcism and father gordon is on his way good-natured arnie tries to comfort the young boy who says he doesn't feel brave arnie assures him that you can be brave and still be scared things are a little lighter when the boy asks when he's going to marry his sister and arnie just laughs it off a taxi arrives out front bearing gordon and a shot straight out of the exorcist i don't think anyone would argue with that alone in his room very loud bangs ring out all around him he hides in the bathroom something jiggling at the handle it suddenly halts david hunker down in the tub he peers up seeing a pair of hands reaching over that slink back down the shower knobs then turn on their own unleashing a torrential downpour of blood upon the child everyone busts in the boy hiding in the dark he gets to his feet and shockingly is carrying a big piece of glass growling and stabbing it into his dad's leg they know they gotta get working on that exorcism like when he split ed carrying david down the stairs kicking screaming and demonically clawing at the walls everyone holds him down and gets to work oh and their old pal drew is there too taping the whole thing lorraine is overtaken with psychic visions all appearing to suggest the involvement of witchcraft things get more intense david writhing and convulsing around the room gets windy as hell and the china cabinet opens flinging dishware everywhere one rogue plate taking out gordon it hurries to keep the chanting going david's bones cracking and creaking into a pretzel of limbs smiling and growling at a sister debbie arnie in desperation tries to talk to the entity directly which ed warns him not to they definitely always say don't do that david leaps up and knocks ed to the ground he growls i'll stop your heart old man pounding hard on his chest arnie pleads with it to leave david alone take me instead things instantly get quiet and the boy drops down seeing the force transferred to arnie as he wanted his eyes turning dark and cloudy lorraine rushes to ed's side still unable to breathe shouting to call 9-1-1 at the hospital the doc tells them that ed is stabilized but he did suffer from a pretty big heart attack dang that kid is pretty strong i guess lorraine begs to know if he's okay but he wants to run some more tests before he can say for sure another absolutely pointless plot line that just takes up run time and adds nothing at all to anything arnie sleeps long into the next day and asks debbie to move out of town for good with him the only problem being they don't have any cash yeah that usually helps but she offers to at least think on it they live above a pretty crummy looking dog kennel and it's easy to see why it's in this state where we meet its greasy manic owner bruno as soon as this guy came on screen i was like what is this this guy is seriously ridiculous later at a family queue arnie goes to fetch the meat plate and encounters a box of cereal that tumbles out on its own but it's just a rat that could be a ghost rat i guess he's drawn to a weird hole in the wall but there is nothing within he spins back to a somber looking woman there scaring the bejesus out of him and well here's our new villain not exactly the most fright-inducing appearance what is she gonna do let me check out a book from the library or something it's just some lady you know oh well they did actually cut a demon out of this just like they did in conjuring two and maybe it would have been better i'm not sure lorraine stays by ed's side and gordon suggests who takes some personal time but she has no interest in leaving him detailing the story of when they first met when ed was working as a theater usher they went out for some ice cream and took cover from the rain and a gazebo and has never left his side since which is pretty sweet honestly arnie is doing some pretty precarious looking tree trimming and trying to yank the chain a glazed look crosses his face the same woman is seen momentarily in the window and the saw springs to life going for his face and he drops it nearly causing some serious damage appearing distressed he comes back to the kennel to bruno complaining about the dogs being loud uh well dogs barking [ __ ] you are in the wrong business he slurs asking him to have a beer and fix hysterio ed finally regains consciousness judy and her single line in the whole movie shouting daddy all right bye he warns that they've got to call the family explaining that it's got arnie i mean yeah obviously where were you guys on that one he literally asked the thing to go into him you know bruno is even more drunk now and surly dancing around to call me by blondie cranking the volume to the max which naturally makes it so that they don't hear when lorraine tries to call this dude is drunk as [ __ ] falling into the table and stuff asking debbie for a dance in arnie's corrupted reality it appears that they're having a grand old time but not so much in the real world splashing some water onto his face he hears a blood-curdling scream from debbie he steps out and it looks like bruno is attacking her his movement's jittery and strange a fang-teeth version of the lady pops out saying hello arnie drags her to the kennels and falls to the floor a knife spilling from his pocket the room goes dark and a creature on all fours goes after him getting him first with the knife but of course it was no creature but actually bruno oops afterwards he's wandering aimlessly down the street his eyes still gray and cloudy a cop spots him and his eyes go back to normal confessing that he thinks he hurts someone covered in blood yeah you think the warrens do some tests to prove that he is still possessed but based on the results no such luck ed saiz this would all be enough to evoke an evil spirit if one is present as soon as i said this i was like that's because there is no actual spirit it's a person doing witchcraft come on pick up the pieces people they pledge to help in any way they can but if there's no demons what to do ed asking to meet his lawyer they are hoping to actually use demonic possession as a defense which the lawyer finds absurd when it looks like there is no hope of convincing her ed invites her over for some dinner and to check out their artifact room it appears to have worked her looking still quite frightened in court later and does use their possession defense to a stunned courtroom they better hope they can figure something out as the lawyer tells them that they are going for the death penalty thinking that they must have missed something they go back to reference their initial interviews with the family and hope of answers when the family first moved in david discovered a waterbed in a room the most luxurious in 80s comfort he does a freefall on it the surface rippling to his delight we briefly catch a ghoulish face under the surface and david slowly crawls back about to touch it a hand burst out grabbing his arm and attempting to suck him into the bed he screeches for his mom and it lets him loose just as his family enters the theory is david must have somehow invited this demon in the demi is confused as he was only in the room for a few minutes when searching where the bed was they uncover something that leads them into a whole new direction there's a black stain on the floor the wood bubbled up sending them to the crawl space underneath the house ed wants to do it worried about lorraine messing up her dress but she's more than up for the tasks murking to him to hold her purse she comes to a plastic barrier on the other side there's a sea of rats and a small sack seeing that the darkness is emanating from this inside is a strange-looking totem and lorraine is flooded with more visions of the boy as well as a ritualistic-looking cup totems like this are used by satanists for rituals so now they know that david wasn't responsible but is in fact cursed and on that night of the exorcism he did pass his curse onto arnie as far as possessions go for specific rituals like this the demon is summoned possesses the individual and then departs using the totem to actually bring the spirit forth ed tasks them to send out photos of it to local police stations and gordon knows someone who might be able to help father castner who spent his life taking down the disciples of the ram cult the very same cult that was featured in the first annabelle there are thousands involving blood rituals too when showing him the totem he warns them to immediately forget about it deeming it a sophisticated work of evil they inquire why the family was chosen and he clarifies the why is irrelevant satanists are only fueled by chaos so we don't get any more motivation beyond it than that which maybe is fine he takes them down to his basement filled with various artifacts related to the cult lorraine on edge tells him that he should burn it all immediately he explains that they worship satan and his demons with blood sacrifices these acts gave them power such as when the cult was finally taken to court the lead prosecutor's pregnant wife's baby was born with his heart outside of his chest after they were convicted and then eventually took her own life he really hammers home how dangerous they are asking if arnie is worth everything because that is what it'll cost pretty melodramatic there guy we see the so-called occultist altar of course the same lady arnie was seeing a pentagram carved into the table the cup from lorraine's vision also present she mumbles some words and tosses in a match causing a big fire to flare upwards clearly she is again targeting arnie busy mopping up the floors he knocks over the bucket and when going to retrieve it it is snatched away by something the lights go dark and the guy in bed shoots awake whispering the lyrics to call me okay another ghoul appears behind him grabbing his head and before anything else can happen security decisions upon him arnie's swearing something else was in here with him fortunately they get a new lead thanks to drew there was a hit on a case in a nearby town that sounds similar to theirs two young bffs went missing one girl katie's body was later found stabbed 22 times yet jessica was never found searching the home they discovered a similar totem and the cop puts it to them almost sarcastically referring to them as the experts they bring up the possibility of jessica being possessed and he puts his foot down saying that he's only interested in leads grounded in reality ed argues that they feel the same way they work out a bargain with him to find his missing girl in exchange for access to his case file he's doubtful that they can help until lorraine brings up her psychic powers being able to see things others can't he's still dubious and wants to do a test to see if she's legit bringing out several knives one of which was used to murder katie ed voices his complaint saying that her gift is not a scicho act but while arguing she selects the correct knife to everyone's surprise deb and david visit arnie in jail with the good news of the warren's work him muttering back lifelessly sounds great he tries to fib that nothing is going on but david knows better too the spirit is still following him around now and is trying to get him to take his own life in the woods lorraine leads the pack and is already getting some psychic assistance feeling something terrible happened here she gets on her knees and the environment around her changes tonight and by far the coolest visual in the film could he use more of that kind of stuff she's back to the night of katie's murder the forest is dead silent until the two girls cross the trees she runs after them along with the others ed doing his best to keep up things are innocent enough at first gifting her friend a bracelet then lorraine holds on her hand and twisted seeing jessica stabbing her sobbing friend even down in the dirt she keeps mercilessly stabbing her 22 times after all and tries to break her out of her trance lorraine now seeming to occupy the girl's body seeing and experiencing things from her pov she then breaks into a full sprint and ed cannot keep pace sweating and his vision getting blurry she runs and runs into the darkness and she snaps back to present time her teetering at the edge of a cliff a crusty arm grabs her leg sending her plunging over the edge but ed manages to pull her back up the cop just now making it yeah thanks for the help dude i just had a heart attack and ice got here first what the heck she knows now what happened jessica feeling guilty jumped over the side and into the waters below crying that she's down there they do find a body there after all even though the officer says they already comb the water twice and he holds up his end of the bargain thanking them for the help at the motel they get a frantic call from debbie this thing is still with him and wants him to kill himself he instructs her to get the prison chaplain newman's help and put him on 24-hour suicide watch and then the call strangely dies leaving ed pondering what is this thing lorraine considers their next step knowing they're dealing with a curse those can be broken she brings up what she saw at the house thinking that she was connected to the occultist if the body they found is indeed jessica's the connection between them could still be open arnie does his best to keep his [ __ ] together and father newman gives him some holy water foolishly in a glass container what are you thinking dude the thing wants him to kill himself and you're giving him a glass thing with shards and everything he splashes out a circle around him and begins to pray ed and lorraine bust into the police station and confirm it was jessica they found lorraine takes her cold hand and starts to concentrate she opens her eyes feeling the connection is still here stepping through curtains she finds herself in a dingy cave looking area adorned with an upside down cross presumably the occultist hangout reaching her altar she describes things to ed and she again appears to be in her pov seeing she's reaching out to arnie once more to complete her curse she clutches her hand clothes and like her puppet he does the same breaking the bottle and shattering it into pieces he grabs a shard and lorraine shouts out to stop in the name of calvary and the connection is broken between them but ernie already did some serious damage though a guard alerting to get some help the woman and lorraine are still there asking how she's doing this lorraine is saying that it's god showing her to me well then god damned you she sees the rain realizes the connection works both ways just as the lights click off in the morgue when ed gets them back on there's someone looming in the shadows a big hulking dude he crinkly spins to face him and begging to lorraine to let go overhand the man starts to thunder towards them and he grabs her away at the last possible moment the guy just missing and bonking his head she's more worried in particular because now the occultist knows who they are and there are almost immediate consequences drew has found an old book that details the church's methods of dealing with witchcraft including a blood ritual involving murder and suicide but they're stumped by the aramaic that is part of the passage and is about to take a look at the case file but is quickly stopped in his tracks he groans awake in bed later finding the house is curiously empty the front door looks to be broken into only lorraine's rosary left behind hearing a clatter the woman is there in the house she compliments them on their extensive collection of stuff ed warning to not hurt her she vanishes in a dark cloud hearing loud thumps from below big boy's back he snaps awake running at air he holds out the rosary chanting for it to leave and lifts up a knife out of nowhere drew grabs his arms snapping him back to reality seeing it was actually lorraine he almost killed and now the occultist's newest puppet he ransacks a place looking for the totem finding it in a vase of a get well bouquet filled with blackened dead flowers the couple then split up with lorraine taking the book to kastner for translation and ed working with drew to hopefully pinpoint the occultist location they realize that jessica actually got her totem when attending the local college and a pattern has emerged all the incidents are in the same small radius meaning that the occultist too must live somewhere in the vicinity you're able to narrow things down further based on lorraine hearing a nearby train in her vision thing and only one freight line runs that late at night that goes right by a river and yep it's father castner's house they're trying to find oh he's bad after all bummer he splits to get there as soon as possible getting drew to call the police lorraine unaware of what's going on asked for his help with the book castner suspiciously locking the door behind her he asked her downstairs to his cult shop of horrors surprising her by clicking the light on as desk he fills in his history here having lived in this house for many years the church used to use it for storage for things that they were afraid of or didn't understand he then shows off a photo album featuring that of a little baby called ilsa he says that her mother died in childbirth and he had to keep her a secret raising her on his own here they had many happy years in this house as he continued his studies into the occult hoping to protect her from all this however it turned out to have the opposite effect instead creating a fascination within the girl urging that we have to be careful how our obsessions are passed on to our children which again would have been a really cool kind of direction to go with judy but oh well so the cat's out of the bag it's castner's own daughter ilsa that is the occultist and one responsible for all this turmoil she's upset at him for knowing what was going on the whole time but he defends that it's his daughter and hoped that she would come back to him one day he knows that she's here due to the tunnels under the land that she would explore as a child he's certain that her altar must be down there and in order to stop the curse it must be destroyed hearing footsteps approaching they know that she's nearby and lorraine flees to the tunnels ilsa comes to her father slowly stalking through the room he laments that he failed as a priest and a father and she surprises him with a knife slice to the throat gently resting his head on the desk while he bleeds out ah thanks honey lorraine receives a flash of the murder through elsa's eyes and continues unabated to find her altar she tries repeatedly to tip it over but it does not budge thing is huge elsa isn't too far behind hearing her stomping footsteps in the halls ed arrives hearing lorraine calling out for him from beneath the door he bashes the lock off with a sledgehammer while lorraine is busy running for her life she comes to a strange and rather pointless distraction a copy of herself a few feet ahead the other lorraine mimicking her every move and that's it it doesn't it literally doesn't do anything else is that scary i don't know uh it's not she gets to another room closing the door but ilsa is waiting for her pinning her to the ground and trying to poke her eyes out ordering her to open her ass she keeps repeating this over and over making it easy for lorraine to reach for a rock without her noticing allowing her to get free ed drops down into the tunnels and thinks that he sees lorraine down a corridor but in the shadow it changes to ilsa blowing some powder in his face that puts him back under her control he goes after lorraine with the hammer while arnie starts convulsing debbie knowing that it's happening now she holds him down while the father reads his body contorting and bones snapping ed keeps flinging the hammer all around and arnie screams blowing out the windows his movement's getting grander and more painful but newman continues regardless lorraine begs ed to snap out of it asking to remember her and he flashes back to the night that they met arnie gets out of his cuffs crawling across the floor body twisting unnaturally all over the place he is lifted into the air screaming extending his arms and takes the shard to his throat debbie holds him back screaming that she loves him lorraine asks him again to remember her and he fights back against himself and really hitting the idea pretty hard there she goes on that ilsa thought our love was our weakness but it's our strength seeing them kissing at the gazebo and poof he's all better taking the hammer to the altar cracking it in half a huge gust of wind emanating out and arnie falls to the floor debbie lovingly holding him tight well there you go folks the papaw of love evil did not stand a chance here elsa returns probably pretty pissed at them for breaking all of her stuff but you know who else is pissed the demon that she promised sweet sweet souls to her arms are snap backwards and the yellow fang version of her appears and claims her soul can't go back to hell without one it would be totally embarrassing to show up empty-handed they would never let them live it down and i guess that that's where we would have seen the other demon that they got cut and they replaced it with the lady with fangs which is not scary either it's still scarier than just some librarian lady but now back in the artifact room a new one joins the menagerie ilsa's ritual cup and source of her magic as for arnie even though they were able to stop the curse and found ilson everything he still winds up getting charged for manslaughter i'm sorry about that ernie hey better than the death penalty at least right though romance prevails learning the couple married while he was in prison and in real life are still together today yeah as for the warrens it has a surprise for lorraine a gazebo just like the one from 30 years ago oh and you are too sweet she swells with emotions and the two kiss leaving them on a happy and reminiscent note together that brings us to the conclusion of this inning explained on the warren's latest adventure and the devil made me do it and weirdly this is the end of the franchise at the moment because to my understanding the other previously announced next chapters a nun sequel and the long awaited crooked man spin-off aren't even in production at the moment and seriously what is taking so long with the crooked man movie huh it's been years at this point and if this movie is any indication it's not taking so long because they want to make a quality product more about printing cash there's no avoiding that at this point so just do it already warner bros otherwise there's not much else known about where the franchise goes from here but considering this one made bank opening weekend i'm sure this is not the last we will see of the warrens and there will be all kinds of new [ __ ] coming out in the future hopefully if they do a conjuring 4 they're able to recapture the magic that made the first two movies such standouts well as long as they got wilson and farmiga doing their thing they've at least got a chance what did you guys think of the conjuring the devil made me do it and its ending where would you like to see the franchise go next and which is your favorite entry let me know your thoughts down in the comments below make sure to like subscribe and follow thanks for watching found flicks see you
