THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN (2014) Ending Explained

hey what's up everybody welcome to fountain flicks on this inning explained we're looking at another one you guys have been requesting for quite a while the taking of deborah logan where an elderly woman battling alzheimer's agrees to let a film crew document her condition but what they discover is something far more sinister going on this is an above average found footage movie that is actually quite spooky the perfect kind of thing to watch late at night with the lights off and just get creeped the hell out is also enhanced tremendously by some well done and multi-layered characters most notably anne ramsey as daughter sarah and jill larson as deborah herself there's a real down-to-earth and convincing feeling to their relationship that really humanizes things before they go full tilt into horror this conceptually is quite reminiscent of relic that i covered last year though this was actually a few years earlier where the horror is a metaphor for deb's debilitating disease that takes further and further control over her and her mind unlike relic this veers into a much more traditional horror direction comparatively and is quite a bit scarier in my opinion in particular the last act there is also a deeper story that is slowly pieced together of what is really going on and it is much more than simply alzheimer's which does get a bit complicated after a while so we'll be breaking down the ever-expanding story how it ties into the truth behind deb's illness and explaining the ending that implies things aren't quite over after all medical student mia and her crew travel to the house of alzheimer's patient deborah logan and her daughter sarah intending to document their entire experience for her final school thesis project they pull up to sarah looking frazzled having a cigarette and prims herself for the camera me encouraging to just be herself she warns that her mom can come off a bit salty but she's truly excited and has been cleaning the house all day in anticipation of their arrival we then understand why they're allowing the crew here in the first place sarah asking about the grand money a relief sarah saying they've been counting on this deb is found out with her friend harris and seems well put together smiling that they're making a movie about me she lays down the law that she's not here to be exploited mia assuring that that is not why they're here adding in that her grandpa had it too things turning a bit awkward as deb's tune suddenly changes having second thoughts and thinking that they'd be better off with a different subject left alone the camera guy louise is confused thinking that she said that her grandparents are on vacation in new zealand she shrugs sometimes people just need some nudging what a liar they spy on them talking inside sarah being straight that if she wants to keep the house that she has to make sacrifices deb reiterating that she doesn't want to do it louis thought they were broke me explaining that they are behind on the house but deb refuses to sell it leaving sarah in a tough spot her breaking down in tears that she's trying a week later it seems that deb has relented welcoming the crew back and see that she has been painting quite prolifically a few peaks of her condition start to rear their head not recalling the bird in her painting in another room she goes on about how she longs to visit germany but sarah reminds her that she has been there and loved it mia details the point of her project not only does the disease destroy the patient but also has heavy influences on their primary caregiver she explains a bit about how alzheimer's works wiping out neurons for thoughts and problem solving sparking hallucinations and eventually erases memories in its final stage the part of the heart that regulates breathing is destroyed effectively ending their lives they sit down to an interview in deb admits to having a few senior moments on occasion like accidentally toasting the toast twice but sarah brings up a more alarming moment forgetting to turn the stove off that resulted in a fairly sizable fire mia talks with her doctor who is 95 certain that she's in the early stages of alzheimer's she remembers deb was devastated at the news but she isn't the kind of person to go down without a fight we learned that sarah's dad dennis died tragically of a pulmonary embolism seeing vintage footage of their wedding as a result deb was forced to provide for sarah all on her own thusly she started her own successful switchboard service back in the 70s and became the nexus of the town with high profile clients and martini lunches and all that jazz it was her job to cover for all of these various clients well she didn't have to sarah butts in but then she wouldn't have a business so well there you go in a voice over we watch deb go through menial errands via discussing that there are no small tasks for an alzheimer's patient struggling to make change when buying flowers but deb is hopeful as she's done everything that she can to stave off the disease but laments went in the middle of doing something and her brain leaves she finds it quite distressing luis later finds deb doing some gardening and pulls out a snake from the hole to his confusion she suddenly appears in front of him asking if he wants some lunch well that was kind of creepy he says a pov surveillance camera is all around the house deb comes out watching and sneaks behind him to another room slamming the door he follows after peering into the dark and strangely seeing nothing we then get a real indication of just how much sarah is struggling to tend to her mom getting her blood pressure taken and it's seemingly not ideal mia telling her that stress is the real killer she brushes it off don't worry i plan on dying of cirrhosis anyway things take a dangerous turn when they hear clattering and find deb holding a knife on gavin cornering him in the kitchen accusing him of stealing her spade she goes nuts yelling that she needs it collapsing to the floor and screaming bloody murder yikes once she calms down they search the house for the missing tool mia finding it in the microwave she tries to gently approach deb asking to talk while she's staring out the window she knows deb whispers and she's tearing at her neck and yanks off a hunk of flesh wow things are progressing quite quickly here but there's indications of something else at play at the hospital the doctor is surprised by just how quickly it's spreading to other regions of the brain a baffled and upset sarah doesn't understand as she told her it would take at least two to three years she sighs the disease is aggressive but she will be too giving her more meds to hopefully stave off the symptoms when deb gets to leave she does seem in a better place apologizing for gavin about how she talked to him yet she doesn't actually remember doing it she returns to painting spotting a shadowy figure amongst it hiding in the woods later luis hears her talking to herself mumbling i told you to stay away from her and cracks the door open her repeating she doesn't know catching louise filming mia equates her brain to a switchboard misfiring synapses like phone lines being pulled from jacks and losing connections seeing sarah taking care of her like giving her a bath or making sure that she takes her increasingly copious amounts of meds vowing you have to face it head on sarah teams has her own coping mechanism massive amounts of liquor she talks to a girlfriend on the phone and apparently didn't tell her just how serious things were with her mom as well as how long she would be here she rounds the others up for a drink remembering back when she was 10 years old and her mom sent her to boarding school after finding her in the garage kissing another girl annie and recalling just how embarrassed deb was oh well she shrugs toasting two [ __ ] up childhoods ah great in the middle of showing off some family photos they hear electricity crackling and rumbling sounds the chandelier is starting to shake sarah runs to find her mom seeing her sink by the hall into another room where she's found standing in the middle staring blankly in the darkness sarah pops in startling them revealing that deb is convinced that there's some kind of intruder guide that she keeps seeing out in the yard and just to make sure she nails the window shut again apparently sarah's shaking her head that it's better not to argue with her later that night deb wakes up gasping and rushes to her feet seeing that mysterious other room's door is open others soon wake up not finding her in her room seeing the window that was just nailed down has been pried open and discover her digging several holes out in the backyard screaming things only become stranger when gavin shows off some footage that he captured deb standing in the kitchen she bizarrely pops up on the counter holding the spade and as gavin points out there is no break in the time code sarah baffled calling it impossible sarah reaches out to the doctor unsurprisingly her offering to up her meds hopeful that it will help yeah more meds that's always the answer right she tries to confront her mom about climbing up on the stove but she's unwilling to even listen telling her that she should go back to richmond and certain that she's just fine during another sit down they show her footage of digging outside them asking if that's me and calling it obscene asking why they didn't stop her she says they did but she was in a huge or hallucinatory state and deb gets upset and starts crying mia considers maybe they should stop for now she flips again lunging out and knocks over the camera calling out for sarah so it's back to the hospital for more tests including a spinal tap which looks most uncomfortable no thank you keep that away from my spine please their tests were in an attempt to explain certain anomalies but it turns out that these tests only raise more questions than answers including a disturbing infection that has given her skin a scaly property they try to do some cognitive tests encouraging her to at least try she sits there scratching at her arm and then peels off the skin afterwards the doc is even more concerned as she's finding more symptoms exhibited that are not associated with alzheimer's and it's almost like she's turning into something else or changing what is it that sheds their skin alright snakes we next see deb sitting at a piano tinkling the keys and peers over to the camera with a smile and fades away which is pretty creepy this is kind of a turning point for things sometime later the crew pulls up to the house noticing someone's car there with the hazards on and the front door is wide open they hear pain screeching and finds sarah and harris trying to hold deb down swallowing several small objects around the house which is pretty weird so they all gather up everything swallowable around the house and boxed them up for her safety deb calling the whole thing silly by the box a snake appears due to this an increasingly frightened gavin takes his aunt's cross putting it by the window everything covered in white sheets he removes one seeing that it's one of deb's paintings featuring that shadowy figure it getting progressively closer to the window in each and now the window has even more nails in it to hopefully keep it closed he turns and deb is there and complains in a husky voice he's letting all the heat out there's a bang on the window and it opens on its own he shows mia excusing it could have just been a draft or whatever and if you're scared of an old lady then you should just go both demanding that she double their rates well can't really blame them there get a little out of hand here mia around 2 30 in the morning the house appears quiet until deb starts moaning and gets out of bed removing her clothes and venturing to the back room leading upstairs gavin is awoken by a piercing loud ringing sound sarah knowing that it's from mom's old switchboard seeing the door that sarah says is never open now is they send luis upstairs first to the attic noticing a strip of flesh on the floor mumbling she's not right to himself she's naked sitting at her switchboard and sarah slowly steps towards her she starts crying begging for help and her voice changes to a cackling lower voice and she starts plugging and unplugging a jack over and over causing a huge electrical zap to explode from the machine briefly seeing a frightening visage amongst the sparks mom is still hyperventilating and when sarah gets in bed she finally gets her breathing under control the doc says that she is physically okay but is in need of rest and gives mia doses of a short-acting sedative in case she needs to be restrained they returned to the switchboard and realized deb was plugging in the same number 337 over and over and believed that it must be because she was trying to remember someone specifically almost fighting against losing her memory too strong-willed and stubborn to let it go gavin meanwhile has some disturbing audio from last night mentioning some gibberish that they heard at the end he did some modulation and other stuff and was able to decipher a clear voice hearing i will set you free child be my fifth apparently in french your blood will feed the river it disturbingly concludes she discusses with harris who is quite worried now that they're exploiting her and offers that if they're in need of money that he can sell some of his stuff just wanting the crew gone threatening that if she doesn't kick them out he will but sarah is certain that they're trying to help and thusly are staying sarah searches another attic for some switchboard records and finds a folder jammed in a cabinet that they wrestle loose looking for the page for 337 they find nothing noticing the paper appears to have been ripped out luis has an idea using some charcoal on the page a slight depression left behind and deciphers the name de hardine they do a search learning that he was a local pediatrician tied to the killing of four local girls and went missing way back in the early 70s even though sarah was young she still remembers the curfews and that the whole state was looking for him deeming him infamous they watch a vintage dock about him detailing the four girls were found dead with serpentine symbols carved in their foreheads parts of their bodies cannibalized and curiously traces of rattlesnake venom found in their blood an expert explains what the killer was attempting a specific monacan blood ritual the symbol of a snake consuming itself being an important part now we're seeing why the snake stuff has been coming up so much and her shedding her skin and everything else snakey and even the location of the murders was an old monacon mine that was built over land sacred to the natives which feeds directly into the appropriately named rouge river the girls were sacrificed during their first menstruation a blood offering to a demon in exchange for immortality he went missing and sometime after a paperboy led authorities to a house with a foul smell finding all kinds of snakes monacon totems and rituals and now we know why henri was interested in the ritual he was dying from lou gehrig's disease frustratingly for him the ritual requires five sacrifices to achieve immortality and freedom from the human body yet he only got four so close henry reminding us of that audio mentioning be the fifth despite a massive manhunt honoree was never found thinking that he fled back to quebec or possibly took his own life sarah tries to unearth more details from her mom about how she might have known him deb chewing silently at first until recalling that the name sounds familiar but can't remember if he was a client or what she brings up that he went missing 30 years ago interjecting that he's not missing he's dead sarah questions how she knows this groaning that he was murdered suddenly anxious she gets up and flees to another room mia outside asks if they need help hearing crazy groaning and screaming coming to her on the bathroom floor having vomited up a bunch of dirt and worms and stuff don't well back to the hospital again yeah dang it's like do you get a punch card for every time you go here what the doc has another diagnosis chalking up her behavior to a classic case of split personality disorder sarah is like uh she puked up earthworms oh she gardens right like that's a reasonable explanation even sarah is all you gotta be kidding me dude further establishing that what is now happening is way beyond the realm of the standard disease and is becoming a much more supernatural situation it starts looking like dev's old pal harris has something to do with this whole thing and thanks to some internet sleuthing find an article about him from back in the day he was seen skulking around the residence and scene of the crime after henri's disappearance they consider that harris might have wanted to save the girls and so he murders henry and then deb would have to cover up for him and it took this whole thing to bring that to the surface but gavin is still unconvinced of anything like that going on asserting that he is missing not murdered yet we'll see bud a loud crash comes from outside seeing it's a drunken harris out front with his shotgun blasting all the windows that he can find including gavin's mom's minivan oh man she's gonna be pissed they call the cops and sheriff tweed arrives to deal with him noticing that he's been doing uh some drinking yeah at least a little bit and is guided to the car by tweed she offers that they can press charges but they're more worried about some weird [ __ ] going on here and she is happy to come back if they ask all his craziness has caused gavin to reach his breaking point not just getting the windows blown out but the phantom window and the levitating and everything else he is out of here they try to remind him that he needs a paycheck mia hoping that he'll be a team player [ __ ] you both he yells and speeds off well thanks see ya [ __ ] you too buddy they pay a visit to the hospital where it looks like henry from beyond the grave is looking for his fifth and final sacrifice they find no sign of deborah in her room and after talking to some frantic parents learn that she has taken a little girl nazi attracts her to an old unused and of course dark and spooky wing of the hospital after looking around the area they find deb and the girl facing away she reaches out to separate them and gets the girl away deb slowly and dramatically turns back in a daze looking disturbed and quite creepy her physical appearance quickly deteriorating again obviously some kind of transformation taking her over they managed to wrangle her back to her room but have some difficulty strapping her down panting and demonically babbling but once they get her doped up she chills pretty quick now that it's more than abundantly obvious there's something going on well beyond alzheimer's and is in fact some kind of demonic possession sarah asks a priest to perform an exorcism but he's no help dismissing it as science fiction no matter how much she begs while mia on the other hand might have a lead getting in contact with the expert from the documentary dr ernst they show him footage of deb and he first goes for the logical rational explanation that her mother has become so obsessed with henri that she believes she is him sarah knows that's not the case and he takes a more supernatural consideration the idea of spiritual parasites weak minds are susceptible to invading vengeful entities seeking a host with the young and old most susceptible even worse if you're ill well and bingo doc sounds like you hit the nail on their head there bud because doo doo debs age and initial alzheimer's she was an easy target for honoree him now one of these aforementioned parasites seeking people to possess to fulfill his long-desired ritual of achieving immortality but how can you stop it ah the classic burn the bones of the deceased thing purification by fire what else deb is still out in her bed harris entering to pay a visit you don't have to do this he says the two embracing kill me she responds weakly knowing that the evil is consuming her body seeing a pillow on the ground he picks it up in consideration he then runs over leaping on the bed and covers her face to suffocate her deb flailing the tv starts rumbling and is launched off the stand smashing right into harris and putting a stop to his actions henri will not let him take out his vessel the others show up at the hospital to fire trucks certain that something not good is going on cyril lies that she's harris's daughter to speak to him and he finally spills the beans he heard back in the 70s about who was supposed to be henri's final victim sarah and it wasn't him but actually deb that killed him right in the neck with her spade they buried him he coughs and she asks where but is dragged out him shouting after in the yard by the statue sarah knows the spot and immediately starts digging at the earth for the remains while luis thinks this whole thing is insane while mia is now firmly a believer telling him to help or shut the [ __ ] up the digging reminds them of when they found deb outside previously doing the same thing thinking whether it was deb or actually on repossessing her at that point they must have been in search of the missing remains they dig for a while not finding anything then when sarah stabs her shovel she hears a clank it's deb spade and well murder weapon now realizing that she must have gotten here first they think of where she or he might have stashed the remains but are given an easy clue coming to a big black wet spot on the ceiling leading to yet another attic even as louise points out that is a lot of addicts folks and of course they send him up first you got the light get up there bro you're fine and smash a strange subject on the wood what i would best describe as ectoplasm dribbling down sarah sees something amongst the insulation a burlap sack mia helps to get it loose everyone overwhelmed by the rotten smell and when opening it up sarah gasps it's him they bring it downstairs and they're supposed to burn it right they try to get a fire going hearing a hissing and when mia approaches it a bunch of snakes crawl out they finally get the fire going thanks to some extra lighter fluid and there's an earth-shattering shriek upon touching the flames and a huge blast knocks them all back everyone running outside in terror in the window we briefly see what must be the malevolent spirit there is no relief as the final stages of henri's plan starts to come together sarah getting a phone call from the hospital that her mother has escaped and got the girl again man really need to step up security around that joint and we see just how lacks it really is thanks to the security camera dev and the girl approaching a security officer deb just straight takes a bite out of his neck the two easily strolling outside and stealing a car sheriff tweet arrives to help and they think that they know where deb is heading the old monaco mines to complete the ritual coming to an impasse the others joined the cops to take a fire trail deeper into the woods requesting backup on the way they find them tweets shouting out they're not trying to alarm you and ask deb to turn around nice and slow cara oddly chanting he's a nice man don't hurt him continuing he's going to wash me in the river looks like henry has polluted the young girl's mind as well tweed gets cuffs on her and she shockingly spits venom at the other cop burning his face and tasks luis with taking him back for help mia sarah and tweed continuing on they go deeper into the pitch black woods coming to the rouge river and a building along with a blood trail and footprints tweed tells him to stay back she's gonna bring her out and mia finally admits that she lied about her grandpa but sarah shoots back who gives a [ __ ] about that now we only see what happens from outside the sheriff beckoning for the girl then hearing the gun firing shattering a window sarah goes in after finding tweed dead with snakes circling her corpse she glimpses deb and chases after coming to a cave entrance the camera lights starting to fritz out following horrified screams they come to a more constricting way forward a small crawl space littered with snakes pushing them back as they make their way through mia is getting terrified and sarah tries to reassure her it's easy peasy i'll jab her and burn the remains dunzo but you gotta shut off the light switching the camera to night vision mode they come across deb and kara holding out a snake sierra sneaks up silently behind her with the needle just about to get her she turns back snarling and going ballistic she climbs on top of mia and sarah is able to pull her off and not sure what to do she goes for a revolver in her backpack the light fading in and out and we're plunged into darkness the camera glitching once again it comes back on and when rounding a corner dev's mouth has grown gigantic and unhinged again similar to a snake devouring kara's head sarah fires and she lets the child loose growling with a fang filled mouth sarah gets her with the sedative giving cara to mia ordering to keep her back deb cackles looking out of it and sarah sets the remains on fire hearing a demonic shriek a strange aura climbing the walls she kicks the sack down a hole and the parts explode seemingly putting an end to henrie anna's plan sarah runs to her mom deb huddled in a corner appearing injured she hugs her and starts weeping or only glimpse into the aftermath of these inexplicable events is via news reports reminiscent of the documentary on henri cancer patient cara is okay and out of the hospital while deb was accused of murdering the sheriff and kidnapping she was found medically unfit to stand trial for murder her mental health having deteriorated so badly she is unable to even speak or communicate seemingly the disease has inevitably overtaken her mind and body regardless of the supernatural possession but it seems that things aren't so bleak catching up with kara at her 10th birthday party now in full remission from her cancer what some are calling a miracle everyone laughing and having a grand old time the reporter jokes what is she going to do in her ripe old age her shrugging she doesn't know well better make a plan i have one but she refuses to elaborate anymore calling it a secret the reporter concludes well there you have it the healthy happy face of a happy girl with a happy ending happy freezing on cara eerily smiling at the camera yeah unrepossessed her too obviously the demon spirit lying and wait until she comes to age then she can be the final piece in his resurrection ritual but there are many questions left like what grade did me end up with on her project did she pass college i gots to know that's the real question here i feel like if i was a professor and mia was all yeah here's my documentary thing and had all this crazy [ __ ] i'd be like wow you made me question what the hell even reality is here's an a you know you you feel you passed feels worth mentioning that's all i'm saying and what happens to deb it appears that the spiritual parasite was removed but it also merely relocated to kara remember young old and sick cara is another easy candidate but it seems that deb is still ultimately consumed by her very real alzheimer's left a shell of a person which is kind of a bummer you know if she's at least get back to painting or something but you know this time not including the shadow of henry anymore you know that would have been nice oh well at least she got rid of that pesky ghost parasite that brings us to the conclusion of this inning explain for the taking of deborah logan hope all you guys that
