[Music] [Music] are you ready kids yeah yeah i'm ready spongebob squarepants is just as much of a video game character as any other but obviously in this instance there is a huge cartoon legacy behind him and some of the newer stuff but specifically the older stuff some of the first few seasons in their entirety still hilarious you know i'm pretty confident that the number 25 is ruined for me there's no saving it for the rest of my life it's going to be the funniest thing because it's more funny than 24. that's it that's all i need to know when looking back at gaming history whenever a cartoon entered the world of video games you would see one or two titles release and then everybody would move on pretending like it didn't happen and that franchise would never get a game again you'll listen ed neddy the misadventures is jank as all hell and i love it as a result but you are not going to hear me beg for a sequel i will tell you that much good god kevin what happened to your head spongebob is different though because that show had such massive success this may come off as a bit of a surprise but there's a lot of video games based on the world of bikini bottom this doesn't even come close to all of them oh what's that you're working on a pretty garbage 2d platformer on the game boy color eh throw spongebob in there we got nothing else going on when the year 2003 came around we were on the cusp of a paradigm shift revenge of the flying dutchman already existed and reception was expected but now we bring in heavy iron studios a relatively unknown developer at the time to helm the next main console title battle for bikini bottom now obviously this game specifically got the remake treatment despite there being like a dozen other games to choose from so this one must be pretty good right well whether or not you're interested and rehydrated i think it's important to take a look at the original game here for not only being a licensed game that's actually worth a damn but also for being a collect-a-thon platformer that came out in an age where that genre was slowly going out of style oh but uh what about battle for bikini bottom on pc yeah yeah no i don't think so ah but what about battle for bikini bottom on gba yeah okay i'm a pass on that one too we're gonna stick to the pure console experience on this journey so are you ready kids oh wait i already already used that joke um 25 we have a pretty easy to understand plot line to get this adventure going as well plankton's robots are going out on a rampage across bikini bottom go stop them that's it that's all we got oh and uh golden spatulas are the key to saving the day because of course they are oh how shellfish of you oh i take it back this game sucks and this premise is a good thing rather than being based on a specific episode or something it's a story that sounds like it could be an episode and it's really just an excuse to see as many different locations as possible while also sprinkling in some references here or there like spongebob looking horrifying when running through sandy's waterless home good times it's really nice to be exploring this world and controlling these characters without feeling like i'm playing through a plot that i've already experienced before and speaking of those different locations they are definitely a huge source of fan service to fans of old school spongebob you start off running through jellyfish fields to encounter king jellyfish you run around every inch of the beach at goo lagoon you get to mess around with the inner mechanics of the myrmal layer that in particular was pretty awesome even if this ball rolling puzzle made me want to rip my hair out that wasn't fun and the final level spongebob's dream is more or less a series of floating platforms surrounded by cool imagery it's really neat and now back to your regular programming retirement homegirls gone wild ah as much as i would love to see that truly truly i would i'm scheduled to be in a coma in five minutes and i wouldn't want to miss that but let's be honest the fan service is the easy part like have you ever seen the show before cool here's spongebob missing the bus out of rock bottom that'll be 50 oh hey caveman spongebob the developers predicted a meme all those years beforehand that's pretty impressive when it comes to satisfying fans of the franchise the only part that was kinda weird is mr crabb's voice no more krusty krab means no more fry cooking for you yeah that ain't crabs that's so weird why didn't you guys get the voice for mr krabs the same goes for mermaid man they're both done in this game by the same voice actor and neither of them sound like how they're supposed to is there a reason why that happened don't ask questions you aren't prepared to handle the answer to ah good point but more importantly in this instance is wrapping that fan service in a fun game and uh yeah yeah they nailed it so at its core we have a pretty standard collect-a-thon here every level has eight golden spatulas to obtain socks from patrick's collection that he lost somehow which can be traded back to him to get even more spatulas and all the money you collect can be used to get spatulas as well but this time you trade to mr krabs instead that just makes sense maybe use that money to get a brand new mattress there crabs criminy jim jim my man you look so tired and you also get a handful of new abilities to help you out on your travels as well with some of them being the key to a mission that you couldn't do initially in a previous level this is really checking off all the boxes here this is by all accounts a super solid 3d platformer we all know play control is at the utmost importance right well there are three different characters to control each with their own pros and cons and in a pretty smart move while you always can play a spongebob whether or not you can change to either patrick or sandy is different on a level-by-level basis which allows for challenges specifically built around their own mechanics so diversifying the playable roster was handled really well and thankfully they all play really well too sandy is by far my favorite of the bunch just because she can use her lasso and swing between these floating symbols of texas that's that's really funny actually i'm a big fan of momentum based platforming and this here oh it feels really good we also have a handful of sliding segments too and these are easily my favorite parts of the entire adventure it is so much fun bobbing and weaving down these trails trying to discover all the secrets spread throughout them and getting to the end as fast as possible it's awesome and the devs knew it too there's an entire stage based around it with sand mountain it's so cool and in between each chunk of three levels is a boss fight against a robotic form of one of the playable characters and like everything else in this game these showcase a really good use of the characters unique abilities each one is a multi-staged fight and each stage within that fight usually has you control a new character or do something entirely new these are some high quality boss fights not gonna lie they're not hard but they're still fun oh and man did i forget to mention that there are a handful of extra goodies to be found throughout the entire hub world as well everything here within battle for bikini bottom is so well constructed how does that feel spongebob i think i have fudge in my pants all right this game is disgusting all that being said though there are definitely a few little nitpicks that stop this game from being one of the true greats for example some of the missions don't feel as polished as they should be like the aforementioned ball rolling puzzle that thing really sucks like really really bad it takes so long to get the ball from point a to point b and one slight mistake you gotta do it all over again it's bad it's really really bad and as enjoyable as sliding is one of the challenges is to get to the bottom in a time limit in one go which is fine but if you fall off the stage a fairer mountain you pop back up halfway through and the timer is gone and you can't just restart back to the beginning so you have to finish that current ride walk up to the start and do it all over again it's a very odd oversight especially since this one in particular is incredibly easy to fall off the stage this one took me a good dozen tries to get right and then we have the entirety of kelp forest my least favorite level in the game visually it's bland design wise there's a lot of going back and forth if you try to go for everything it is unquestionably the low point of the adventure the enemy types could also use a bit of extra variety you see the same small handful of enemies from start to finish it's not a huge deal but it does make things less interesting from a visual perspective especially since each level themselves is very visually distinct from each other and i mean you can honestly argue that graphically this game has its quirks too mouth movements are far from good but i'll still give this game the benefit of the doubt being an early 2000s licensed game and on top of all that the completion bonuses are pretty underwhelming as well getting every golden spatula nets you a video of all the characters singing the spongebob theme that's it and getting 40 000 40 000 my god gets you a reel of concept art it's really nothing special at all but like other games of this genre it's all about the journey not so much the destination and ultimately it is still a really fun ride any slight nitpicking i throw in here is not going to take away from the fact that this game is simply a lot of fun if you're not a fan of spongebob this is a simple solid 3d platformer but if you are a fan especially of this era of spongebob the best time to play battle for bikini bottom is all the time and also the final battle a gauntlet inside of a giant robotic spongebob is really cool so who am i to complain really oh but taking a look back at the concept art what's this here a robotic squidward that doesn't appear in the game at all it's another example of something neat getting cut before the game ships well until rehydrated promised to bring that fight back as well as other cut content and even a multiplayer horde mode battle for bikini bottom on gamecube ps2 and xbox a whole lot of fun but the way rehydrated is looking i'm ready i'm ready i'm ready so yeah if you thought a random spongebob game getting the remake treatment seemed sort of weird and unnecessary hopefully this showed you that isn't the case battle for bikini bottom is definitely deserving of a modern adaptation but that being said the original still holds up if you're a fan of gamecube and ps2 era platformers check this game out it'll be worth your time and with that another video done for our good old friend ant dude but little does he know people will now be harassing him to play more spongebob games until he covers all of them oh come on i'm a goofy goober rock spongebob squarepants battle for bikini bottom was a big success reviewed positively sold well enough to get those ugly labels slapped onto the box and over time garnered a really solid following full-blown remakes don't come out of nowhere after all enough people gotta show love to the original but with an obvious hit on their hands heavy iron studios had to be brought back to make another game starring the sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea and it's a movie tie-in game as well by all accounts this should be an absolute disaster a video game based on a movie based on a cartoon do the math it all adds up to this being a train wreck the thing is though whenever battle for bikini bottom is in the conversation the movie game is sure to follow soon after it was made by the same developers it only released about a year or so later it shouldn't be possible but we may actually have a hit on our hands from what i recall the movie was pretty good i remember really liking it and if you were interested in the game at the time you're probably in one of two different camps you either got the game after enjoying the movie a common trend for any media tie-in video game or you bought the game day 1 and spoiled the plot of the entire movie before watching it because it was released weeks beforehand excuse me what either way since this game is technically a sequel to battle for bikini bottom it is still interesting looking at this as a standalone game not associated with a movie let's take all the good stuff we did when we made a platformer based on the world of bikini bottom as well as including a bunch of references and now try to do the same thing but with a feature length film neat oh and like last time what about the spongebob movie game on pc still no point and clicks don't really do it for me i'm sorry ah but what about the gba version listen it's gonna take a few therapy sessions to look at a portable spongebob game and not get war flashbacks to legend of the lost spatula oh my god mrs puff what happened but you know what they say when in doubt pinky out maybe this one is the one for me alright the spongebob movie game on consoles let's dive on in hold up promotional materials ah jimmy neutron fairly oddparents avatar was close to premiering it wasn't on tv yet whoa whenever games include something like this it's like i'm traveling back in time 2004 back when only the second season of spongebob was about to release on dvd and tack was a thing oh the memories so the plot follows that of the movie surprise surprise the weird thing though is just how that story is being told there are far more in-game cutscenes than last time which is really cool i really love how these characters and worlds look and interact with each other it's great stuff but on the other hand there's also a lot of cutscenes that are these weird series of snapshots from the movie with like windows movie maker transition effects it gets the job done i guess but it seems really weird for some scenes to have work done to them and some to not a few of the pictures here aren't even from the movie they just slapped together a bunch of clipart in photoshop and called it a day older movie games had straight up clips from the movie to string the game along what is spongebob's excuse well at least the voice of mr krabs is on point this time which is awesome considering how weird it was back in battle for bikini bottom sad to say though david hasselhoff didn't receive the same fate you see mr hoff had a pretty substantial part in the movie but i guess because he's a big deal or something in the game he's replaced by oh oh that ain't hasselhoff to spare you from going over the entire story of the film essentially spongebob is depressed after not becoming the manager of the hot new sequel to the original the krusty krab 2. as he drowns his sorrows with patrick over a ton of ice cream plankton steals the crown of king neptune frames mr krabs for it and begins taking over the entirety of bikini bottom as our sponge and starfish hero duo go on a manly adventure to return the crown to its rightful owner luckily the story is simple enough to where it converts into in-between level plot points fairly easily a lot of the movie is just a road trip between two bros reacting to whatever pit stops they make along the way clearly being the influence behind final fantasy xv it feels like most of the movie was covered here in ways that make sense and that's really all you can ask for it's inherently not as appealing as exploring the entire world independent of being associated with an already existing episode or movie but hey we got cutscenes of a 3d spongebob model being drunk i think that makes up for it there's also a new animation of spongebob being scared and it's absolutely terrifying okay yeah this is more battle for bikini bottom alright i can already understand why these two games are usually in the same conversation now it plays like exactly the same the biggest difference with this game is how the levels are laid out while battle for bikini bottom was a collect-a-thon giving you sizable worlds to explore with eight golden spatulas spread throughout them as rewards for different challenges the movie game is far more linear you book it from point a to point b deal with a few enemy obstacles and platforming challenges along the way you get a goofy goober token or two by the end and you move on while it may seem like a bit of a downgrade going from a sandbox to not that i'm actually totally cool with this it's a change of pace by doing this it already allows the movie game to stand out a bit more from the last game shadow i like it i'm ready depression this game really speaks to me yeah the platforming is quite alright nothing mind-blowing but jumping around is fun attacking enemies is enjoyable you do lack some of the abilities you have at the end of battle for bikini bottom at the start of this one but you unlock slight variations of them over time and there's even an upgrade system on top of that by collecting enough barbells to level up your manly meter you can pick and choose where upgrade points go and these improvements actually feel like they're useful initially i thought this idea was pretty forced but it actually turned out to be a worthwhile addition oh boy look at my man go if anything comes off as a downgrade though it's that you can only play as dirty dan and pinhead larry as opposed to having sandy as an option as well it makes sense she didn't have that strong of a role in the actual movie but still she was my favorite in the last game it's because of the swinging primarily just that luckily that mechanic is still present you just use patrick's tongue on floating ice cubes instead it feels just as good to use but i'm gonna miss the conveniently placed floating texas symbols not gonna lie and while this is definitely a more linear experience exploration is still a thing typically you'll run into a few extra trinkets and unlockables this way but for the most part you are always going exactly down the path the game wants you to the bulk of your options lie in these wide plethora of challenges that end up taking place on these really randomly placed squares conveniently sitting off there to the side you got monkey ball esque rolling challenges mario sunshine inspired platforming and weirdly colored voids enemy gauntlets that can be quite a challenge until the last one where they just troll us with a single jellyfish that honestly caught me off guard i felt very weird about that going through a series of rings who doesn't love a good old-fashioned ring challenge [Music] that would be me i don't love a good old-fashioned ring challenge i especially enjoyed jumping around in this one because the background started spinning out of control and it made me almost vomit so you know that was oh boy that was fun and alongside the handful of platforming stages there are sliding levels as well reminiscent of the same mechanic from the last game and driving levels where you control the paddy wagon all these years later that name is still amazing and i actually really like this they're still a matter of testing your reflexes to get from point a to point b in one piece so i think they fit that being said though there is a problem and it comes from needing to play through all of these stages so many damn times to get more and more tokens you will often jump into a new main level and get told that you can't progress until you get a new skill which you can't get until you have enough tokens so the quickest way to do that is to do the extra missions in the sliding and driving stages you already did the level normally now do it under a time limit now go through the rings now do it in a tighter time limit i think we've jumped to enough hoops for you mindy then how about jumping through rings instead mindy you suck and some of the things they expect you to do in the final time trial challenge is insane i'm pulling off these ridiculous shortcuts here and i'm still just kinda short of the time needed they're also prone to glitches too so that's nice here's me in a perpetual jump so it's impossible to finish the slide good stuff most of the time i love challenges like this mario and sonic games have these things all the time the thing is though in those games they're optional a means to complete the game 100 but not necessary to see the game's ending here though you definitely have to do at least some of them in order to simply beat the game and i think it is safe to say it's pretty dumb oh oh this is like that scene from the titanic right the boss battles are unfortunately lacking as well they're not bad just incredibly simplistic and super short the bosses in battle for bikini bottom had you use each of the characters abilities in pretty interesting ways so what happened here i know we gotta stick to dennis on hasselhoff's hairy back because it's canon to the movie and saying that out loud was pretty weird honestly but it still feels like they didn't try to make something good out of these you lay on a bunch of hits move on now i know i'm doing a bit of complaining specifically when compared to the more universally liked battle for bikini bottom but can you really blame me that game was the result of taking a chance implementing tried and true platforming mechanics in a world of spongebob squarepants and obviously it did well for them and when you're pushing through the main adventure here it's still pretty good so why am i suddenly forced to replay missions with strict guidelines and deal with underwhelming bosses that wasn't a thing last time and it's not like people were asking for it the spongebob movie game did release only a year after battle for bikini bottom after all and it was made to tie in with the movie's release so maybe this was rushed it's still a quality movie tie-in game so that's remarkable in and of itself it's not as if it poisoned the water supply burned the crops and delivered a plague onto our houses but we're also technically talking about a platformer sequel here i can't say for certain and it's not as if it's lacking in quality but decisions like these definitely make it seem like it needed more time for polish that they weren't afforded because they had a strict deadline to meet by their orange slimy overlords also the total number of tokens only reaches 68 you guys were one away from the funny number man come on at least the final boss is kinda decent it goes on for way too long but it's at least based on timing your jumps and attacks in a more precise manner so it's nice the goofy goober theme plays halfway through as well so credit where credit's due that's pretty cool after all is said and done we're treated to another slideshow with poorly thrown together graphics go through the credits and then you get sent back to world one wow that's really anticlimactic you don't even get anything special for collecting everything one additional cutscene and a handful of minor extras so huh so beating the game doesn't really feel like much of an accomplishment completing it doesn't really get you much of a reward but their journey from point a to point b is still really fun so that puts the movie game in a bit of a weird place i may not have played every single spongebob game out there but after battle for bikini bottom the one that every series fan can get behind i went into this game expecting it to still be good but not as good and yeah that is basically what i got we ultimately still have an enjoyable 3d platformer here with enough polish to make it a worthwhile adventure for spongebob fans and platformer fans alike it's not awesome and it probably won't get the same rehydrated treatment since it is still based on an older movie but it's still a good time alright so i guess i'm reviewing a bunch of spongebob games now huh well okay we'll return to the land of bikini bottom soon enough rehydrated comes out pretty soon so that's as good a time as any to make that return after that i mean we've already covered two of the games there can't possibly be that much more i know there's a couple people talk about but they really can't be oh oh there's like 10 plus more i did this to myself [Music] are you ready kids i mean i guess i already used this joke though so it doesn't really make sense to use it again for our next foray into the world of an interactive bikini bottom well we're gonna take a bit of a step backwards let's be real here spongebob squarepants battle for bikini bottom has always been a bit of an anomaly we have a quality 3d platformer based on a licensed property in an era where collect-a-thon platformers were losing a lot of their appeal and in recent years people have accepted more and more that sure the franchise has pumped out a ton of video games because it's a successful cartoon of course it has but battle for bikini bottom in particular has transcended that and a lot of that i think is due to the speedrun community they took that game from obscurity and made it a big deal to where we are today and that is just really really cool so while on paper giving a spongebob game a full-blown remake may seem a bit outlandish once you consider all of that information rehydrated makes perfect sense during this era where remaking classics like crash and spyro is all the rage the ingredients are all here for something really special so is spongebob squarepants battle for bikini bottom rehydrated as good as we all anticipated eh okay so to get the important stuff out of the way this is still battle for bikini bottom exactly as you remember it for better or for worse we have nine open levels filled with a linear main objective as well as multiple side objectives all taking place in different iconic locations throughout the entirety of bikini bottom plankton's robots are going out on a rampage so collect as many shiny things as you possibly can to go inside the chum bucket and save the day and as much as this next part is going to sound like a bit of a backhanded compliment the thing that made the original battle for bikini bottom feel kinda special was that it wasn't garbage licensed video games of that era are supposed to not be good so when one comes around that is competently made in a fan favorite genre the collectathon platformer then yeah you're gonna get a lot of praise and a lot of that is deserved it doesn't feature a ton of mind-blowing platforming mechanics that rival some of the best you can find in similar titles it was just simply enjoyable running and jumping through jellyfish fields missing the bus out of rock bottom going down the multiple slides in sand mountain and you don't only play a spongebob but patrick and sandy as well each with their own pros and cons there's some basic puzzle solving some simplistic combat a plethora of challenges to go for that for the most part never really get too difficult but they do give you plenty of things to go for in each stage which is nice like looking for all of patrick's hidden socks that really encourages exploration it takes off nearly all of the boxes that makes it collected on platformer what it is and also traveling the world of bikini bottom that's just a simple pleasure in life this game satisfies that oddly specific niche look at this more like spongebob dehydrated am i right the original title nailed all of those rudimentary platforming tropes very well and i can safely say that for the most part rehydrated gives off that same exact vibe so if you're looking for a modern way to play battle for bikini bottom this will fit the bill just fine the problem though is that it doesn't really do much more than that there are sort of two main topics to rehydrated which i didn't anticipate the original game is still here so if you're a fan that's awesome that's really good news but in regards to it being a remake remaster sorry i'm really not impressed obviously the most noticeable improvement here is with the graphics and yeah it looks pretty fantastic once again though for the most part every model has been recreated to represent the characters more modern appearances and the worlds really pop out a whole lot more thanks to the more advanced lighting and the redone textures some areas though i would actually argue don't look as good and i think it's all due to the overall contrast the original was a whole lot more muted in a lot of those locations but in areas like lagoon i think things are a little bit too bright in this one for my taste in comparison sand mountain also introduces a pretty heavy level of fog which is kind of strange normally i would assume remix would get rid of fog but it was never there in the original so it just comes off as a weird choice i know i'm pulling at hairs here and overall it is very good but it seems like for every upgrade that was done and rehydrated there are some questionable decisions made alongside it like let's look at the cutscenes a handful of them are fully reanimated from top to bottom and they look excellent patrick looks a bit odd at points something about his teeth just rubs me in a wrong way that it never did before i don't like it but for the most part these are great an absolute highlight of the overall package spongebob is a cartoon after all these really come off as an animated cg movie the basic talking scenes however these i'm a bit more indifferent too the developers went ahead and made many more expressions for each of the characters to better reflect what's actually going on in the conversation i mean hell looking back in the original half the time spongebob wasn't even looking at who he was talking to but it's the lip syncing that's the problem for me actually the lack of it again i know this is ultimately not a big deal i will admit that i am fully biased here i adore what happened with spyro in the reignited trilogy and one of the more impressive changes that was implemented was including lip sync on top of the looping animations it made the characters feel a lot more alive i guess i would say stuff like this just shows its roots as a ps2 era title and i would say in the world of modern day remakes the bar is set a bit higher than that the text boxes don't follow the lines of dialogue either which seems like a really weird oversight and what is this mustache animation just put the mustache on him that doesn't look good the movie game did that just fine many years ago and also really minor nitpick they didn't do the crazy zoom in for the infamous mrs puff don't ask questions line nullifying why it was even funny in the first place it's just not the same i do really like the option to have everybody speak japanese spongebob is my favorite anime i'm definitely shining the most spotlight on the graphics here because overall they're a whole lot better and the game is gorgeous but the problem is that nothing else has changed the voice acting sadly has not been redone once again for the most part this isn't a major problem but it does introduce a couple of things i do wish were different for one the lack of new recordings kind of placed the cutscene animators in a bit of a corner since there's no freedom in how those characters are delivering their lines every scene comes off like a shot-for-shot recreation rather than a re-imagining lacking some of the more cartoony spots that were really good in remakes like crash bandicoot this also means that mermaid man and mr krebs still have their wildly inaccurate voices it became sort of a funny joke knowing that the original sounded the way it did aka no more krusty krab means no more fry cooking for you bad but i really don't understand any excuse here with the entire cast still reprising their roles in the cartoon i feel like it would be better if the lines were recreated here i don't know what the problem is i am aware that unfortunately the voice actor behind mermaid man passed away years ago and nickelodeon ever since has not given the character a voice in the cartoon but i don't know man i just think those two characters in particular needed to be fixed most of the character's deliveries were already great and often really funny but i also think you're seeing a trend here of me saying this game is good because the original was good rather than saying how good rehydrated is and this all culminates in the gameplay looking back at the original there were definite problems the tiki area in kelp forest could be pretty annoying some of the sliding sections are way more frustrating than they have any right to be platforming in squidward's dream can sometimes be a total nightmare the rolling ball puzzle in the myrmal layer brings out a frustration in me that i haven't seen out of myself since super mario sunshine and in rehydrated all of that still applies all of the effort here seem to simply go to the aesthetics and nothing else some of these segments are just as annoying as ever before this part still sucks a whole lot i did find out how to skip the tiki section in kelp forest so that's something positive it's not as bad as some people say it is but the problems are still there come on man it's not that bad get good and if anything there are even more issues here the camera in the bungee jump sections can often screw up there was this one time i loaded into a slide without realizing it and then flew off into my death they didn't prepare me for this the momentum for sandy's lasso swings one of my favorite parts of the original game are completely off and they feel forced now things that without direct comparison probably don't come off as big problems like everything i've said in this video up until now but i played that original version not that long ago so my perspective is a bit different all of this makes battle for bikini bottom rehydrated kind of feel unfinished and that goes double for the switch version too choppier frame rate the shadows are worse pixelated edges on all the models it is simply not as on par with the other consoles as it really should have been and the thing is i don't know if this is the fault of the relative newcomers purple lamp studios or nickelodeon not giving out enough of a budget because they simply wanted this game to release before the new movie who can really say it's all speculation on my part actually the movie also got delayed so you probably should have just done that with the game it would have been fine i'm just saying they did add some fresh memes into the idle animations so that right there is the best part about rehydrated but what about one of the major selling points here the return of robo squidward this boss was cut from the original version and with a remake happening here there was a promise to bring it back which sounded super exciting oh man are we gonna get like a new secret area like maybe a spot under the chum bucket is this gonna be some major new threat are we gonna have some extra spatulas to collect on top of this ah what about patrick's dream that location was also cut from the original game so bringing that back and having robo squidward be a boss of that stage would make total sense that would be perfect oh man this is so exciting i can't wait to see what we're gonna get no so exclusive to rehydrated we have a brand new multiplayer horde mode and it's terrible every character more or less plays the same don't play as squidward because his clarinet makes the same three notes over and over again and it is the worst thing on the planet it is incredibly repetitive lacks any amount of skill to get through it goes on for about 40 to 45 minutes and then you just get sent back to the title screen after completing it that's the entire mode it is 100 percent an absolute waste of time but hey robo squidward's there so they weren't lying man reviews for this game have been all over the place and it's kind of easy to see why the original battle for bikini bottom succeeded because in a world where successful platformers were evolving to incorporate elements from other genres it was frankly great seeing a licensed property stick to the basics and give us something solid so as a result of this game more or less being the same newcomers will still enjoy themselves nowadays though i would argue the playfield is completely different and i think as a remaster rehydrated comes up short crash spyro medieval hell even having a simple graphical update on top of plenty of quality of life improvements like we got with xenoblade was more in line with what i was expecting here in the grand scheme of things yeah this is probably still the definitive way to play this game but that's more so because it's now available on modern consoles and pc rather than being impressed with the work that was done here if you haven't played battle for bikini bottom yet rehydrated is still a fine pick personally i think i still prefer the original version but that's just because i'm an absolute sucker for older 3d platformers during that generation that entire era was jank as all hell and man spongebob fit in perfectly rehydrated's just okay in my opinion battle for bikini bottom is still one of the finer games in the franchise and rehydrated is not a bad pick so either way you go you're in for a decent time which is a whole lot more than you can say for some of the other games in the franchise and i did sort of promise that i would start covering these and a whole lot more so i guess now is as good a time as any to start making good on that promise huh you know it looks like some call me johnny over on his channel is starting to tease more spongebob content of his own so it looks like we have a bit of a race here me thinks you may have won the kingdom hearts race but i'm gonna win the spongebob race you hear me this is serious this is 100 totally serious oh boy 25. [Music] you want to see me play two spongebob games you want to see me do it again at this point in the spongebob squarepants video game franchise things are actually looking pretty good yeah if you really dive into the nitty-gritty of things and check every single title it's still a disaster these are licensed games after all but the one-two punch of battle for bikini bottom and the movie game shows that in the right hands we can get some really quality stuff from this little sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea i still can't believe what mrs puff looks like in the original gameboy color game ma'am are you going to be okay so today on our continued escapades throughout the world of bikini bottom we have a double header here spongebob truth or square and creature from the krusty krab two highly requested games in the series these aren't the two games that directly followed the movie game however in the grand pantheon that is sponge video game software these are the only other two that follow a similar trend that's right we have two more 3d platformers i am too far down this rabbit hole dude i played battle for bikini bottom and the movie game and my brain was like you like spongebob games don't you aunt dude and i have never been the same since initially these two may not seem all that special but relative to the previous two successes things do get a bit more interesting 2009's truth or square saw the return of heavy iron studios the same company responsible for battle for bikini bottom the movie game and after those a handful of titles based on pixar films as well as ufc personal trainer right after truth or square boy that's what as for 2006's creature from the krusty krab made not by heavy iron studios the only real claim to fame for this one was that it was a launch title for the wii since nintendo apparently showed a lot of interest in using spongebob to push their new console it even got a spotlight at nintendo's e3 2006 press conference what a badge of honor i guess oh no wait breacher from the crusty carb um whoops oh and yeah i'll be playing both games on the wii today but believe me i've heard all the warnings you guys have been giving me about doing so truth or square does have an hd version but i don't own an xbox 360. let's be real here if i wasn't gonna buy one for sonic unleashed i certainly wasn't gonna buy one for spongebob are you kidding me at least sonic unleashed would end up being playable on an xbox one and at this point spongebob can't so don't complain to me complain to microsoft otherwise though it's the same game so that's nice and besides on the wii we can still use a normal controller creature from the krusty krab on the other hand has mandatory motion controls and hey if my man reggie can get behind it then so can i we'll cross this bridge when we get to it there are also some portable versions of these games out there but that might be for another time although truth or square is also on the psp and it's like the same exact game there so that's pretty cool but the other games that's a whole other bag of alaskan bull worms it did release later but considering this is technically the end of the heavy iron spongebob trilogy let's start off with truth or square and put a bookend on the story that battle for bikini bottom started it's the anniversary of the krusty krab and it is time to party amidst all of the preparations mr krabs entrusts the krabby patty secret formula to spongebob bad idea he's gonna immediately forget where he put it isn't he patrick where did i put the formula we could have prevented this here's where plankton comes in to save the day offering to conduct experiments on our spongy hero to poke through his brain so he can remember where he put that slip of paper thanks to all of these micro robots being inserted into his mind and all of his friends getting really awfully nostalgic spongebob travels through a bunch of happy memories in hopes of remembering where he put the formula and considering we literally just saw him put it in his back pocket in the opening cut scene i got a sneaking suspicion i can see the ending coming from a mile away the premise is kind of similar to the animated special of the same name but the whole going through memories thing in the game is an excuse to reference a bunch of episodes from the early years of the cartoon which isn't what happens in the animated special jellyfishing with patrick working the 24 hour shift being afraid of the hash slinging slasher squidward getting obsessed with the krabby patties and getting super thick it is a love letter to the old school fans of spongebob it does take a few creative liberties with how the actual events took place but hey the sentiment is still nice and anyway the simple concept of a video game clip show is pretty cool especially with as many iconic moments from the cartoon as this one which ends up being a big shame because the game itself first off like the entire soundtrack is reused from battle for bikini bottom level 1 jellyfish fields uses the same music as level 1 jellyfish fields i couldn't pick out a single music track that was original battle for bikini bottom soundtrack was fine and all you know it certainly helps that the game was also really good but considering the whole idea behind truth or square is calling back to older spongebob episodes on top of having older music it doesn't really give this game a strong identity and that would be fine if the rest of the game was strong enough to compensate for it but sadly that's also not the case stages are super linear there's no room to explore here you're pointed in the right direction at all times there are some enemies or slight puzzles along the way some big battles to finish the stages off on paper it's not too dissimilar from the movie game but there was next to no variety here to keep things interesting the movie game was also linear but stages were a lot larger there were these sliding and driving levels to break up the platforming and there are plenty of side challenges to tackle as well here in truth or square most of the sages play off exactly the same and it makes things pretty boring and monotonous you walk in a straight line you mash the attack button a bunch to deal with the enemies you get told where to go endlessly even though the levels are still mostly straight lines so just let me figure this out for myself game it's just nothing interesting happens and it's very disappointing until spongebob gets fed i guess the main gameplay element that's trying to keep things exciting are the power ups you'll often run into an item that powers you up for either a time limit or until you take damage they not only allow you to deal with the overload of enemies that get thrown at you a whole lot easier but they're also the only way you gain control of characters that the previous games gave a lot more time and attention to so it simply feels like a downgrade there's no dedicated patrick or sandy gameplay to allow for different styles of challenges you just play as spongebob except for the times you play as someone else for like five seconds just to go on a rampage at least we can play a squidward though so you know that's more than we can say for the last two games that that's a bullet point on the back of the box i guess oh wait it turns out there actually are extras to go for however to access them you have to go back to a stage after it's already completed why are we introducing backtracking to linear levels just to pad the game out some more i mean i guess so because the game otherwise is less than three hours long less than 180 minutes from the title screen there's the credits at the end you take down a huge plankton robot spongebob remembers he kept the formula in his back pocket the whole time called it and it turns out that's not even the formula mr krebs had it in his pocket the whole time but he forgot about it and the last three hours of my life feel relatively wasted but at least we can get a few costumes so hey that's yeah i got nothing spongebob squarepants truth or square isn't bad but it's boring and uninspired it sucks because the premise is still really cool heavy iron studios may have been involved but it is not the same team we wanted it to be on the bright side though the in-game cutscenes are pretty nice you know the lip syncing and the animation totally on point here a lot better than the stock animations of the previous games and even rehydrated when i think about it the models are nicer for sure but truth or square is definitely a whole lot more animated jiggle me handle spongebob now i'm good thank you for the offer though so yeah i guess there's a reason why truth or square is never in the same conversation as battle for bikini bottom or the movie game despite being done by heavy iron studios but i mean again if you take a look at their entire lineup it's really unremarkable so it's not a huge surprise the fact that they worked on a game called fat city is the best thing that they've ever done that name is amazing i don't know if it's licensed or whatever but fat city oh man fat city just a city full of fat maybe breacher from the crusty carb is going to be better sure there are motion controls in a wii launch title it's worth being terrified over them but maybe with a new developer at the helm blitz games we can expect a fresher take on the franchise the wii banner is shockingly bare bones and man hyping myself up is gonna blow up right in my face isn't it the story begins with our heroes in the middle of sleeping spongebob's bed turns into a car he revs off into the distance and it looks like we're gonna race [Music] excuse me you want to run that back i feel like i just went blind yeah sure okay spongebob is absolutely horrifying now thankfully we only see him from the back during the race that's nice you stare at this for too long and you'll turn to stone piston patching oh i hate it i hate it so much i like to imagine all of these young spongebob fans getting a fancy new nintendo wii and a new sponge game for christmas greeted to this man i really feel sorry for them oh and uh real quick do you want to see mrs puff in a really tight fitting corset i had to see it so you all had to see it as well honestly the game's premise is pretty weird there's like no overarching story for the most part at least nothing is told to you outright spongebob patrick and plankton are all in the middle of dreaming each one tells their own little mini story and then you kind of just piece everything together from that knowledge spongebob after a few races drives into an abyss which turns out to be the alaskan bullworm which is where we find old man jenkins and his airplane that we use to escape from it meanwhile patrick is the superhero starfish man in pursuit of the evil dreaded patrick which eventually leads him into an evil space layer to destroy an evil ufo and once the evil deed is done he returns to earth and then we have plankton well he's evil of course and wants to take over the world that's about what i expected this time though after escaping from a huge crappy patty he turns very large yeah why not it's his dream makes sense but yeah that's kind of everything that happens there's no real major plot point that ties everything together aside from things are just happening but the real interesting thing is all of these dreams end up coming together at the very end somehow for a big final encounter in which the box art has been inadvertently spoiling this entire time whoops that's kind of fascinating i guess it makes absolutely no sense but sure it's like spongebob is taking a cue from a classic square enix rpg that's a very bold move except when you take down plankton that's not the end there's one more race segment where you can either play a spongebob or if you collect enough trinkets throughout the adventure patrick or plankton and then after that one race which is not difficult in the slightest and has no bearing on the story whatsoever then the credits roll what oh and it turns out that gary was actually dreaming all of the other dreams the whole time oh my god [Music] and then spongebob dies at least in truth or square there was a plot that tied everything together the stages may have been telling individual stories but there was still an overarching narrative that made sense maybe to creature from the krusty krab's credit it's kinda nice that every single stage does do something different but rather than feeling like there's a whole lot of well thought out variety here a more so comes off as the game has absolutely no idea what it wants to do you got platforming combat racing side scrolling on rails airplane segments causing mayhem with giant plankton random mini games that kinda pop out out of nowhere all the time that oftentimes have absolutely nothing to do with what you were just doing before then creature from the krusty krab does do a lot of things but it doesn't do any of those things necessarily well i guess i could argue it's kind of a better approach to just playing as spongebob in truth or square but neither of these approaches really leave that much of an impression like the very first thing you do is a race but there's no opponents so you just keep driving until the course ends oh but even when opponents do start popping up it's still just a matter of getting to the end you're not actually racing anybody as if the main challenge is to simply stay awake oh maybe that's why the main gimmick is dreams oh and yeah that's right we got motion controls on top of all that to deal with again we got the wii version here for all of the driving stuff it's fine you know you tilt the weir mode to lean in the direction you want that makes sense but once we get to the platforming and the combat the special attacks are performed by shaking the nunchuck oh god why oh and in case you're wondering yeah it barely works half the time so that's cool all right we gotta turn this winch to open the door hold the weir mode vertically and move it round in the air got it [Music] the motion controls of the wii version can be very hit or miss why the hell are you playing the wii version of creature from the krusty krab i wish you good luck for playing the wii version oh god not the wii version three hours later fine all right creature from the krusty krab gamecube edition let me just see something real quick and uh okay good it's normal i'm still gonna stick to a full playthrough of the wii version just for morbid curiosity but it's at least good to know that there is a normal version of the game under all of this garbage perhaps the game is simply too linear for my liking i know plenty of people out there are super nostalgic for this one but this is my very first time and i don't know man it's not great nothing in the adventure is particularly challenging the level of hand-holding going on constantly pulling you towards the next path is kind of ridiculous and some of the stages go on for way too long things just drag on for no real reason some of the concepts here are admittedly pretty cool but the gameplay is not strong enough to match that potential sure truth or square wasn't all that exciting either but you at least had some more tools in your arsenal to make the moments moment gameplay just a touch more interesting in creature from the krusty crab while the platforming is decent the combat's okay more so in the not wii versions and everything else it's a total crap shoot there's an objective screen on the pause menu why you only ever do one thing at a time you know i take back what i said earlier saying this is a platformer really wouldn't be accurate it is a story-based mini-game collection with a couple obnoxiously long platforming stages sprinkled about and with that understanding i guess some of the gameplay becomes more inoffensive for the younger players out there but we are clearly going further and further away from what made spongebob games so interesting in the first place i do like this dude though this guy's alright by me what though there's a music mode you pick an instrument each one has unique controls to play the notes oh my god spongebob did we music before we music that's incredible okay you know what this is honestly the most fun i got out of this entire game the harmonica this is my favorite one you can play a whole range of notes by inputting a bunch of different button combinations it's pretty cool you can actually make some recognizable music [Music] i guess if anything check out truth or square i enjoyed this one a little bit more the box art is absolutely terrifying and it's also on xbox 360. so if you want some easy achievements that'll be the way to go but even on the psp the entire game is on that console as well so if you want to take spongebob and put them in your pants you can do that alright so we're like five games down and about two dozen more to go i really gotta start picking up the pace on these stay tuned i got a lot of cool stuff planned that you're not going to want to miss until then though i'm going to go take a nap and if my body just starts to turn into this horrendous form i'll let you guys know but keep me in your thoughts jiggle me handle spongebob oh that's disgusting oh son of a mother a few months ago i said this stay tuned i got a lot of cool stuff planned that you're not going to want to miss yeah i wish i could have told my stupid self to shut up spongebob squarepants starve the platforming classic battle for bikini bottom a few other solid titles like the movie game and mostly junk mostly a whole lot of junk well uh this is this is what we've been building up to i guess we've already covered all of the good or at least notable games in the spongebob franchise but anybody who's anybody will tell you there's a whole lot more than just that the few platformers under the sea really set a bad impression of what the rest of the bikini bottom video games have in store it shouldn't really be that much of a surprise though video games based on cartoons more times than not are total train wrecks that's why when we have something good something like battle for bikini bottom it's kind of a big deal that was one of the earlier games in this long-running franchise too so it sucks knowing it is all downhill from here i went through every single possible spongebob game i could find and this right here this is most of them and today we're going to be talking about all of these oh barnacles there are honestly still dozens of titles remaining to look at and i just knew looking at every single one of them in one video was bound to fuel my dwindling sanity so for the sake of said sanity we're going to be avoiding the gameboy advance in nintendo ds today don't worry i've already started collecting for those consoles for a future video but we already got like 10 games just for this video let me breathe also we're going to be sticking to just spongebob today there are plenty of crossover games with other nickelodeon characters on top of all of this solo stuff but man i'm just one dude let me breathe ultimately what i got together here is a variety pack of games featured across multiple consoles some old some new just a little bit of everything except mobile games none of those i ain't touching that minefield so no matter what machine you spend most of your time on maybe we'll find the perfect game for you or maybe you're just here to see me slowly hate everything spongebob why are you like this well speaking of battle for bikini bottom there is no better place to start than the pc version no not the pc version of rehydrated the original pc version which is apparently a totally different game luckily i got the game to run pretty easily i'm not too savvy with retro computer games but this one was pretty straightforward the installation process also sent me right back to my childhood dude we didn't need no fancy steam ui back then just a basic rating with simple yellow text and quickly flashing by screenshots gaming will never get better than this it is so interesting to take a trip on the wayback machine to see how computer games used to be man things were different so the premise of the game is kind of similar to the console version plankton's robots begin disobeying their master at the same time spongebob and patrick are wishing for robots and then boom destruction begins however one main difference is the voices for the robots are much better get lost tips yes much much better these character models by the way these are the damnedest things i ever did see man in game totally fine they look exactly how you would expect but these cut scenes oh man poor sponge's eyes are about to pop out of their socket a couple of texture issues here or there but to be honest looking into spongebob's soul is not too out of the realm of possibility for what i expected today oh but first and foremost before we start the game i gotta dig through the options yeah i'm one of those people okay we can toggle sound music we can toggle the entirety of story mode yeah those are all options we would come to expect oh okay interesting yeah so this isn't a platformer like the game that we're more so familiar with this is actually a point and click mini game collection you pick an area of bikini bottom you got a series of mini games that you go through to get to the end and then you just keep on doing that until you win a lot of quizzes too they make sure to give you a quiz in every single level this is a kids game right yeah man nothing kids love more than quizzes and their video games based on very popular cartoons how many letters are there in gary's name oh yeah not enough definitely i'm so glad this game lets me finally voice my opinions and it's about time too i always thought the word gary was too small gary that that was definitely the way to go you gotta really elongate that name there's really not that much more to this and honestly that's kind of okay it's not fun like not at all let's not twist our words here but let's be real if you're not a little kid in the mid to late 1990s you are way out of the core demographic i played games like this all the time when i was a kid so yeah at the time this seems like it would do the job fine the platformer was always better that is simply an objective fact but this is a completely different beast that clearly a lot of people are very nostalgic for and in fact there are actually three other pc games too the movie game employee of the month and operation krabby patty sadly getting these games playable wasn't as simple as battle for bikini bottom so i couldn't get first hand experience with it but thankfully with the power of internet video we get to see that yeah they are certainly all more point-and-click adventures neat from a historical perspective it is definitely interesting to look back at these since it is highly doubtful they will ever get resold in the modern day market i mean hey employee of the month has naked mr krabs so you know a very specific niche was met with this one but it's just not for me good grief is naked but i was never really a pc gamer anyway you put me in front of a console or a handheld and i am easily right at home and speak of the devil yes the game boy advance may be off the hook this episode but i said nothing about the game boy color legend of the lost spatula the game that can claim the title of the very first spongebob squarepants video game ever a time before they knew the correct spelling of krabby patty yes such a time did indeed exist not a bad chiptune remix of the main theme on the title screen to get us started here hell even the in-game music is a bit of a gem [Music] we may actually be in for a pleasant surprise am i kidding here i've already made fun of this game in earlier videos mrs puff ma'am i believe you need to go see a doctor please my fish she is very sick boy am i ripped are you though my favorite thing in this game by far is just pressing down when i'm standing still best thing you know what though much respect this is actually kind of an open world game you're basically looking to find a golden spatula to become the ocean's greatest fry cook and to do so you just run around bikini bottom at your own pace finding items to unlock paths and so on on a technical level it is pretty impressive on a practical level though hey it's not very good are you surprised it mostly just boils down to being not fun to control the game takes a lot of jumping to navigate the world properly and you can never tell where platforms are a real recipe for disaster there whenever you jump you move faster than if you were just walking so you're actively encouraged to jump all the time which means you're gonna get hit a lot and then you're gonna die all because he ripped his pants ooh i found a treasure chest what's inside april fools i think i just passed out for a second but hey it is the very first spongebob game after all surely they will iron out the problems in no time maybe they'll try this 2d platformer thing again perhaps on a home console that plays cds to the playstation oh hey look at that spongebob super sponge was pretty surprised to find out this is on the ps1 it eventually got ported over to the game boy advance and that's how i played it back in the day but now that we're on home console i get to finally see the true way to play this game super sponge definitive edition spongebob wants to get patrick a signed photo of mermaid man and barnacle boy however the heroes want something back in return in the form of having you do random things for them all of which are completed by platforming of course wouldn't have it any other way compared to the lost spatula this one is definitely a lot more familiar it is a purely linear set of platformer levels with a bunch of trinkets to collect that is more like it and i do really like 2d platformers on the ps1 so maybe maybe this is the one for me but is it just me here or is spongebob a bit too animated something here simply doesn't look right when you press up he just changes a few pixels but when you press down it gives us the smoothest animation of the game i'll admit this makes me very uncomfortable okay jelly fishing net get grab a jellyfish throw it back out as ammunition [Music] oh i hate this we do got some decent references though i mean there's a whole level where you platform on the hooks that start pulling you up towards the surface that will kill you you know that's that's that is a reference all right you eventually get to travel to sandy's tree dome too which apparently is a million miles tall to be fair vertical platforming is something you really don't see every day but you know what would make it even better if you're constantly on the verge of death by not having enough water so you have to stop what you're doing stand in water for a few seconds and then continue platforming it's a lot of fun also if the controls were good then maybe it would be better because oh my god this sucks this sucks so much awesome death jingle though i gotta give him credit to that much better than mario's i guess one of the main gimmicks with this adventure is every world is going to introduce a new gadget for you to play around with because soon you gain access to the coral blower oh no i think it makes spongebob even more slippery to control oh no i just don't understand what they're going for here most of the stages are the standard linear affair with platforming that is platforming all right but i got to this point where this one level wanted to be all open world and maze-like you got to grab ammunition with the blower so you can break down a few barriers but why though this level is designed terribly there are branching pathways left right and center and unless i just got lucky by falling down the correct pit that led to the end the level is only open for the sake of it assuming you would be in favor of combing every nook and cranny for every single collectible when it ultimately means nothing man i can't even say the game looks good some of the sprite work is pretty fine but this weird mishmash of 3d and 2d sprites and everything kind of looks flat and 3d at the same time it looks so ugly perhaps 2d platforming just isn't the way to go for our adorable little sponge here i know that's what most of the gba and ds games are like so maybe my opinion can be swayed when i eventually get to those but hey after these two games know i'm gonna go into those with the highest expectations possible but now let's think outside the box maybe you did in fact enjoy the games i've talked about thus far but there was one thing missing from your oddly specific list of requirements vehicular combat well we got the game for you spongebob squarepants boating bash oh man the story for this one let me tell you it really breaks the mold you're never going to believe this spongebob fails his driving test oh my god this time is different though introducing seymour letting spongeboy me bob know all about his drive course destruction recklessness impairment velocity and escape spongebob's about to go on a killing spree isn't he [Applause] for the bulk of this game here it kinda just feels like bumper boats drive around and crash into things that's the whole package you got the typical last man standing type mode there's one where parts fly off of damaged vehicles that are up for grabs and the most points wins and even some more traditional racing stages and i'll be honest it ain't bad my big concern going into this would be the controls on a home console boating bash is a wii exclusive so i fully expected motion control shenanigans for the whole thing but luckily no just pop in a nun chuck and drive i'll be damned it actually controls decently how did the driving game on wii get controls right but the platformer didn't though you can just use a weird mode if you wanted to the game is wii wheel compatible after all it's just a hunk of plastic it's compatible with everything the story mode is pretty decent too just a means to throw a bunch of different driving styles at you and sprinkle in a few cut scenes along the way there's a bunch of playable characters vehicles out the wazoo all with different attributes i'm pretty surprised here these developers took an idea that didn't seem like it would work on paper and actually put a lot of love and care into it it's not great you know spongebob wasn't gonna dethrone mario kart anytime soon but for what it is it's okay pretty bare bones but not a bad time and hell you know what i'm still in a bit of a wii mode here let's check out another game for it spongebob squiggle pants now one look at the box art and i know what you're gonna say what the [ __ ] is a you draw what are you a normal person who doesn't know what a u-draw is you silly jellyfish it was a peripheral that had a square on it that you can draw on top of using a built-in tablet to interact with the game going on on the tv you just pop the weir mode in on the side and then boom a wii u gamepad prototype how could you have gone through your life not hearing of dude's big adventure before this for what it's worth it definitely works you see look you gotta shake it to wake up patchy the pirate when the game starts money well spent and hey why not leave it to way forward of all companies to figure out how to get a spongebob game out of this oh god it's a warioware clone the maniacs that made shantae contra 4 and would eventually go on to make the smurfs 2 game made a warioware version of spongebob wow will jiggle me handle spongebob they actually did it jiggle me handle spongebob it's presented exactly like a warioware game every set of minigames has a new quirky art style for the most part the tablet works really well there are multiple different gestures that the game asks you to do and they all pretty much work only being an issue in a couple of the games and there's even an art studio so you can finally make the drawing of your dreams and throw spongebob on top of it i call it bold and brash um this game is actually pretty fun i gotta admit here i am totally stunned that i just said that it's nowhere near as good as any actual warioware game out there but let's be real can you name a clone of the warioware games probably not it is hilarious that spongebob is the one to take that title interestingly enough while the you draw tablet was not exclusive to the wii spongebob squigglepants for the u draw was so point to the wii i guess but if for some reason you're not interested in scoring a you draw tablet of your own surely there's one of you out there well the game was also released on the 3ds so there's your next best option spongebob squiggle pants or warioware gold hmm okay we're on a roll here we're on a roll i want to stick to the wii train for a little bit longer you know the pioneers just to ride that baby for miles and i want to do the same but we need a little bit more power let's take a look at plankton's robotic revenge for the wii u uh did did the game freeze oh no the title screen is a static image oh no plankton creates a new robot and decides to seek out his revenge by stealing the safe containing the krabby patty formula plankton's robotic revenge they managed to sum up the entire plot right in the game's title that is very impressive alright so the premise is pretty simple here with a character of your choice you're running around different locations of bikini bottom slapping around some boxes and enemies shooting guns wouldn't trust squidward with a gun but here we are there's some really basic platforming you get to do this this is one of the most boring games i've ever played wow man what happened here clearly and i mean clearly right this game is primarily set to be a multiplayer title for kids by keeping everything super basic and simple while still giving you a consistent path to progression by upgrading your equipment this definitely seems like it's just meant to be a distraction for children and nothing more if you have the wii u version though i will give that one extra points i guess because thanks to the gamepad you can play five player multiplayer rather than four kinda neat don't think i'll ever get to experience this though i asked all my friends if they wanted to play with me and they all said no i know i'm as surprised as you are so this game released in 2013 i seem to remember around this time in the early 2010s these sort of simplistic co-op beat-em-up shooters whatever you want to call this genre had a bit of a trend going on didn't disney have a game that was kind of similar a few years before this matter of fact i also played a decent amount of ratchet and clank all for one which released around the same time as that disney game and yeah look at this they are both very clearly going for the same thing here maybe it's just me you know i don't really think games like this are my thing but man just take one look at ratchet you can at least see they still wanted it to feel like a ratchet game i played plankton's robotic revenge for an hour and not only did the gameplay never change not only did i have to hear squidward repeat the same lines over and over and over again driving me absolutely insane take this robo-loser take this robo-loser not only do you fight basically the same plankton boss battle multiple times over with barely any differences but the level themes never change the time of day does shift around but that's about it this sort of sandy cliff top design for the entire hour i played this game this was the only theme that i got to experience maybe later on things do change up a little bit but i have no reason to believe that i don't know maybe a pseudo sequel can make things better maybe one where all the spongebob characters can turn into superheroes and a game i get to play on the playstation vita so i can finally show this off on my channel my lifelong dream realized spongebob hero pants similar to truth or square this did release on xbox 360 but no i don't own one like i've said before and i'm not buying one for a couple of spongebob games i have some remaining dignity that i have to uphold please don't laugh i'm gonna be honest these hero designs i feel pretty uncomfortable i was way out of the loop with this franchise by this point apparently this is all based on another spongebob movie from 2015 sponge out of water which i haven't seen so not only is this game kinda similar to plankton's robotic revenge gameplay wise but it's also based on a movie that's based on our cartoon which once again i have not seen a recipe for a masterpiece if i've ever seen one alright well yeah you know the camera may be kind of different and we may be lacking guns this time around but yes this is kind of more the same as plankton's robotic revenge just this mindless affair pushing forward pressing the attack button whenever something dare step in front of you maybe doing a couple of puzzles with the heaviest air quotes around that as possible the big thing now though is we can turn into superheroes that's horrifying thank you game there's honestly not much more to talk about with this one it's really that simplistic it's just so so not good this is also the only spongebob game to grace the vita that's why the console failed clearly the higher-ups the people who are responsible for getting spongebob games to even exist in the first place took notice after plankton's robotic revenge and hero pants we wouldn't see another spongebob game on consoles until battle for bikini bottom rehydrated in 2020. oh thank goodness the story had a happy ending we are nearing the end of the finish line here so i figured we should talk about these two next to the surprise of nobody at least i hope not we got some mini game collections as well i figured we should start off with lights camera pants so many people have wanted me to check out this specific one i must have been passing up on some massive hidden gem all this time because so many people seem to be really nostalgic for this i'm excited to check it out oh okay right off the bat i can see exactly what you're all talking about these guys are out here advertising cross saves of all things all the way back in 2005. spongebob was unironically way ahead of his time so the premise here is pretty cute the producer of the adventures of mermaid man and barnacle boy tv show is looking for some new actors so of course leave it to spongebob and friends to compete for all the different roles on offer that's mostly it for the plot but that is one of the most sound stories for a minigame collection i think i've ever seen and as for the minigames themselves well yeah they're they're pretty good there's a bunch of four player ones all of which are pretty straightforward get more points finish in first place jam out better than anyone else really good stuff the two v2 ones though this is where the game shines in my opinion in a more typical mario party fashion both parts of the team will often have different roles but in order to win both sides have to be good at both roles since you will be swapping part way through it totally goes against the mario party quick mini game mentality for sure but for competition's sake that is a great way to encourage as the kids would say getting good i genuinely enjoyed my time with this game more than i thought i would but if anything the thing that is stopping this game from being better than it is is the number of games available only about 30. there is definitely something here something that could be built on for a future minigame collection but for this initial one the lack of replayability means that while it was enjoyable i probably won't be returning to it anytime soon but even still definitely one of the better spongebob games out there which admittedly is still a whole lot more than i can say about this next one atlantis squarepants did i did i die and go to bikini bottom heaven oh of course not no i i am definitely in hell let's see if you played lights camera pants and thought it was just ah just just too much fun well hey maybe atlanta squarepants is the game for you similarly we have a bunch of mini-games tied to a story this time about our heroes getting to and eventually escaping from atlantis like hero pants i can't say i've seen the source material that this is based on but i do hear this is more or less the same plot anyway so i'm well versed in atlanta square pantis i guess now the mini games though wow they are so mindless and they drag on for so damn long the first thing you have to do is guide a tank around and shoot a bunch of obstacles that's it but it is so so slow no challenge whatsoever and it takes like seven minutes to get through but it felt like 30. then you got this sort of single-player co-op puzzle stage in a cave where patrick and spongebob got to work together and bounce off each other to get through all of the hazards that are blocking them and this one actually took 20 minutes but it felt like 40. the concepts that they have you play through are pretty enjoyable on paper and for the first minute or so it can be fun but by the end you are practically falling asleep on your controller lights camera pants really did this so well man you got to make sure that you're invested and having fun at all times once the moment-to-moment gameplay feels like an absolute slog you have failed point blank you have failed i was kind of taken aback because i feel like i had a bunch of requests for this one too but actually i found out that it might not even matter looks like everybody who's been hyping up atlanta's square panties has explicitly hyped up the ds version instead almost as if the console version doesn't even exist well damn okay don't worry fans in the future i will definitely try to do your game proud not today but one day so on this adventure we have seen many highs and many lows well okay we've seen a couple of highs and mostly just a whole lot of lows if i were to tell you that most spongebob games are not good i feel like you wouldn't be shocked to wrap this journey up i figured we should take a look at one more game another platformer that i haven't talked about until now one that released right in between super sponge and battle for bikini bottom oh that's exciting and it really makes you think you know if bfb was so fondly remembered what does that say about the platformer that released only one year earlier on all the same consoles it really makes you wonder spongebob squarepants revenge of the fly huff spongebob accidentally unleashes the flying dutchman from the bottle he's been contained in and then seeking revenge for said capture he starts hypnotizing different citizens around bikini bottom to join his crew leaving the absorbent one to save the day another game where the entire plot is basically summarized within the title truly the sign of a work of art also i may be misremembering but i'm pretty sure the flying dutchman isn't a magical genie not really sure where this whole releasing from a bottle business is all about but okay this game has always mystified me because in essence it is still a collect-a-thon 3d platformer what did battle for bikini bottom do so right that this game failed at well the graphics are certainly part of the problem sweet king jellyfish this game is ugly i get it you know it's the very first 3d spongebob game on consoles i understand but man it is really hard to go back to this bfbb released only a year later meaning it was being developed around the same time right that's how game development works well we clearly know where the effort went so okay pretty typical layout here there are multiple objectives to complete in each level and doing so will get you a nice new shiny thing this time letters that spell out the word spongebob and yeah you know just you just keep doing that until you inevitably fall asleep chances are that'll be pretty quick running and jumping feel incredibly sluggish combat feels like you're never actually hitting your target when you want to and progression feels totally aimless i honestly got lost multiple times because i had no idea what i needed to do to get to the next level trying to figure out how to get sandy to come out of her cave so i can go follow her and then fight her in hand to hand combat that took way longer than it should have i just wanted to beat her up race squidward to the krusty krab ah okay that's kind of funny he's walking slow because he doesn't want to go to work that's that's pretty funny i'll give it that ha sucker i win oh he was here first and they don't even refer to the fact that we were just racing okay the game is functional enough so i was able to get everything i needed to unlock level two and progress totally fine but once i got into level two well one of the first things that you requested to do is deliver food to the citizens of downtown bikini bottom you know this big city that you've never been in before that's really dark and you gotta find apartment numbers on top of the doors and just hope that within the time limit you get it right how did they think this was okay i have no idea where i'm going my favorite thing is you not only need to have the number right but you gotta make sure you're on the correct street too when i tell you i found the right number but i was on the wrong street oh i was thrilled ah the ui is terrible too what's with this unfiltered yellow text over the gameplay is is the game even finished man not even the music is worth talking about you know maybe the soundtrack is overall fine you know that could be a possibility but for most of the time i played this game you're better off wearing this jellyfish costume because yeah there's a costume mechanic in this game even though it doesn't really add much of anything but when you do wear the jellyfishing costume it forces the same jolly song on you the entire time you're wearing it why even have a soundtrack at that point the most curiosity i had with this one is simply seeing what the different stages were all about so i put in a few hours just to entertain said curiosity and once they said spongebob could explore sandy's tree dome without a helmet on because of a couple of leaks that made the floor wet and one of the tasks is to plug up said leaks which would i don't know eliminate his ability to breathe that's when i knew this game was an absolute lost cause also when i walked into sandy's house my game restarted itself for some reason and i lost all my progress so yeah that's the end of that oh i really put myself on a path that i am not proud of spongebob squarepants video games are the mixed bag to end all mixed bags but i now know that you super fans are going to be asking yourself one final question when is aunt going gonna be taking a look at the gba and ds games there's like 20 titles left to look at oh son of a [Music] months later [Music] i wasn't ready few things in life go together as well as spongebob squarepants and the gameboy advance nintendo didn't make that spongebob themed gbasp let's remember here they definitely knew who lived in a pineapple under the sea and i guess with that knowledge it may as well slap his face on a console and call it a day the sponge also started his video game career on the game boy color we covered that magnificent beauty last time which means someone saw this and thought to themselves oh yeah we need sequels but really now spongebob having a legacy on the gba should be pretty obvious in the early 2000s spongebob was all the rage so was the gba and licensed video games were all over the place learning there are a whopping seven spongebob games on the console should come as a shock to nobody except for me who now has to play all of them hell he was even a big player in the short-lived game boy advance video line starring in three great cartridges permanently preserving 12 classic episodes onto the gba library you love to see it i mean not physically left to see it because boy this compression is rough but hey it's still funny to think about some of the games we're discussing today even showed up in a bunch of combo packs they really squeezed the sponge for as much worth as they possibly could so continuing my legacy of covering every single spongebob game i guess today we're going to tackle all of the games on the gameboy advance oh boy and just to be clear here we're still not going to be talking about the overall nicktoons games even though spongebob is the main face on a lot of them those titles will have their own time to shine in the future don't you worry we got seven games to talk about now as it is let me breathe and yes to all of you super fans out there this does mean that the ds is next and i got all of them ready to go i can't believe this is what i've become starting things off it's important to note the common thread that ties all of these seven games together if it wasn't already painfully obvious yes every single one of them are portable quote-unquote inferior versions of existing console games they were released right alongside said console games you remember that era where advertisements would hype up the latest and greatest game releasing on every single console under the sun and barely ever showed what the portable versions were ever about what a what a gross time that was i'm glad that's over oh wait the first game to grace the 32-bit handheld is spongebob squarepants super sponge the only title to also be released on the playstation 1 alongside the gba rather than the ps2 pretty cool right no just me i find that interesting okay like all of the other console versions of today's games i did cover this title before and long story short i was not a fan super sponge is a pretty mediocre 2d platformer with a really weird art style and level designs that are all over the place the mechanics were also super poorly done yep i still hate this but maybe the gba version is different i mean both versions only released three days apart so i'm assuming those extra three days were for polish structurally the game is basically the same this is the only instance in this entire video where both versions are more or less really identical so keep that in mind we got simple point a to point b platforming basic combat some mechanics like needing to stay moist while climbing sandy's never-ending tree is still here and it's still not that fun but it's here but and i can't believe i'm gonna say this the game is actually better okay yeah now i know i'm losing it the gba version cuts out a lot of the fluff any story that was there is reduced dramatically stages are a lot shorter meaning you get to progress at a much faster pace mechanics like the coral blower are simplified and thus a lot better to use there's none of that huge random maze garbage like the ps1 version don't get me wrong still not a great platformer but for being a first year gba game it's actually fairly decent i don't know what they were thinking with this soundtrack though oh my god [Music] [Applause] yeah you know that classic spongebob jingle my favorite thing and it's also a really short ride you start the game 45 minutes later you take out whatever this weird abomination is and you're able to celebrate patrick's birthday in peace oh dear god plankton what's wrong with you oh no he's hot next up we got revenge of the flying dutchman great well considering how dreadful the console game was this one might be a bit better as well it's a pretty low bar but hey it's something to strive for so despite sharing the same name the plot is actually slightly different rather than gary randomly bringing the genie bottle-filled treasure chest into spongebob's house they now find said treasure chest in a cave instead whoa man this totally changes the lore you gotta calm down the objective is a bit different as well to be fair you gotta run across bikini bottom to find 10 hidden treasures and once you do that the dutchman has agreed to grant spongebob a wish we are really committing to the whole him being a genie thing despite him not being a genie but okay it's another side-scrolling platformer you got to remember here since we are on the gba basically all the games here are going to be side-scrolling platformers it is just best to accept that now and also is it just me but does the coin sound effect sound really similar to the star bits from mario galaxy [Music] i really hate that i made this comparison the main goal with this game is exploration the stages have three different keys to find bring them all to the chest and you win and the primary way of getting things done now is by blowing bubbles a totally different moveset to the console version i will give the game credit you see on your travels you stumble upon different liquids that give attributes to said bubbles like floating being more powerful and the ability to bounce off them it's just that oh my god there is so much backtracking in this i gave supersponge a little bit of credit for dropping the huge maze-like level design but it turns out i didn't have to look far to find it it's not even that you just have to keep running back and forth but you got to make sure you have the right bubble liquid at the time as well and oh man it sucks a whole lot all of these different holes on them you mean to tell me he can't just pop the different bubble bottles in there and then we're good to go that's the inventory system it writes itself and then there's also the special stages that oh god is it better than the console version no i would say it's just as bad but for different reasons what a badge of honor there is no saving the revenge of the flying dutchman name oh but okay we got battle for bikini bottom next based on an actual good game this time around okay i'm excited and it uses the same exact engine as flying dutchman okay but i mean now the stages are linear so inherently that does make this a bit better but once again you can only complete a level after you collect the three shiny things within it why it's not even like every level is safe by the way you still got back and forth to deal with occasionally and it sucks every time this city level is terrible the bonus stages are a bit better they are this time of the auto scrolling variety and i did always enjoy these kinds of challenges but otherwise there really isn't much to this one it's just marginally better than flying dutchman which is a real shame because man battle for bikini bottom is so good they didn't even try with this one and i can't believe super sponge is still in the lead though in a surprising turn of events exclusive to the gba version battle for bikini bottom does let you ride on top of mystery the seahorse that's pretty cool let's be honest here if you agree let me see a wii snow in the chat lisa but the spongebob movie game i'll be damned it actually changes things up for one we finally have a decent art style now that works with the limitations of the system that pseudo 3d stuff was ambitious i guess but i really dig the solid outline sprite work utilized this time around this looks pretty good and brace yourself all you gotta do in this game is get to the end of the stage and it ends i know i can't believe it either the game moves at a slower pace than the previous adventures though there is a dash move you can pull off which is actually kind of satisfying to use and you also control both spongebob and patrick at the same time being able to utilize strengths from both characters to get through the challenges that are thrown your way there are these weird running towards the screen challenges which aren't all that great but i am genuinely surprised here the core game this is actually pretty decent you travel across a bunch of locations that are faithful to the movie as well i didn't think we would actually get a portable version of the movie here i mean it's not like battle for bikini bottom shared the same levels between versions but yeah just in case you were worried about the gba not being powerful enough to handle david hasselhoff's mile long hairy body concluding with a boss battle on his butt then rest easy of course that's here and one final thing no thank you scary tongue grandma in a monster's mouth is one of the best lines ever said in a video game so there is that too i was so mystified as to why this game is actually kind of decent i had to i had to find out why and it turns out foolish me i just wasn't paying attention when the opening credits were starting turn the game on let a few seconds pass and hey look at that way forward that's right they got the developers behind wwf betrayal on the game boy color to work on a spongebob game that is growth and the following title lights camera pants same deal another way forward spongebob game color me actually excited similar to the console games plot the film producer gil hammerstein is looking for actors for his mermaid man and barnacle boy tv show so take control of spongebob patrick sandy and squidward and tackle a bunch of challenges to prove your worth once again we are working with the same graphical engine as the previous game but the structure is pretty different we do have very familiar slower paced platforming to do once again but now you go into every level with all four characters each with slightly different moves and if any character loses a life you continue on like they were never alive it's the spongebob game with permadeath that we all wanted but the level design and the themes are not even close to being as interesting as the last game this is as bland of a licensed platformer as you can get and it never picks up and also squidward why why why does he jump like that you know it's not every day you get to see squidward jump i don't know if i've ever seen him do it before but this clearly we were not meant to see it happen and it was painfully obvious that wayforward knew the platforming was dull because this time around many games also have a major focus falling way more in line with the console version you got rhythm games stacking burgers bouncing balls back at bullies to protect sand castles driving oh my god the driving oh yep okay yeah just just going out for a spin you know me all right we're gonna we're gonna end this anytime soon i'm getting i'm getting sick it is a shocking amount of variety for a game that only takes about an hour to finish and there is some extra stuff that you can unlock but quite frankly none of this is worth it the unfortunate fact of the matter is when it comes to their older stuff way forward was not always necessarily the name that guaranteed quality and this game shows it but with one game good and one game bad maybe we need one final attempt to swing the average in their favor wayforward also made creature from the crusty crab for gba as well or remember as reggie promoted breacher from the crusty carb still my favorite thing now if you remember on console this adventure was a literal fever dream that started with quality spongebob nightmare fuel i still hate this and you'll be happy to know we get that on the gameboy advance as well this is just as hard of a game to explain as its console counterpart essentially you play a spongebob patrick and plankton going through bizarre dream sequences where things just sorta happen and you as the player just have to accept it spongebob is driving patrick's a superhero plankton's being chased by a cheeseburger don't ask any questions shut up and platform it will forever be one of the most incoherent things i've ever played through but on a gameplay front it's fine i guess platforming racing flying fighting more flying shooting even more flying oh my god there's so much flying and to be honest as nonsensical as it is i did enjoy this one more than the console game it is just as all over the place with its ideas but the mechanics are kept a lot simpler due to being on the gba and unlike some of the console segments that went on for just far too long all of this is crammed into another roughly hour-long adventure it made things a whole lot more digestible and because the minigames didn't feel out of place like the gba version of the last game i'm going to give the point to breacher from the krusty karb gba i even managed to unlock some extra mini games on my playthrough as well i wonder what's hidden inside these unlockable side menus here [Music] oh i still think ultimately the spongebob movie game comes out on top for the way forward affairs but this is for sure way more enjoyable than lights camera pants and that concludes i guess the way forward spongebob trilogy pretty hilarious this even exists in the first place but before we truly wrap this up for good there is one final game atlantis squarepants basically you combine the spongebob and patrick controls of the movie game with the exploration based platforming and sporadic minigame approach of lights camera pants and yeah that more or less sums up this entire thing though this time you also gain access to mr krabs and sandy as playable characters as well and depending on the character's placement you get to pull off some unique moves ooh very sonic advanced 3 i guess except you can only swap characters at specific spots so it's also kind of like donkey kong 64. oh god okay i really i really gotta quit with these comparisons maybe it's the pure burnout starting to settle in but this is a pretty unremarkable platformer you kind of just meander around solve a few quote-unquote puzzles that stand in your way pass the super easy minigames that pop up because you just gotta have mini games here it's the law and you rinse and repeat until you beat the game or the game beats you whatever happens first i know it's not the most exciting way to end this retrospective but i mean i really like this spongebob and patrick trapped in a bubble sprite though but alright i know you're all asking for it it is time for a tier list at the very top we got the spongebob movie followed by creature from the krusty krab super sponge battle for bikini bottom lights camera pants atlanta square pantis and finally revenge of the flying dutchman no matter which version of the game we talk about this game belongs in the garbage if your tier list is different than mine let me know yours in the comments below because something about having conflicting tier lists among spongebob gba fans is infinitely hilarious to me so that means these are next give me a few more months and we'll talk about these two oh tartar sauce [Music] did you know that randomly in 2021 one of these spongebob mobile games krusty kook-off released on the switch did you also know that when it did release on the switch they took this free to play mobile game and charged 30 dollars for it before immediately buckling under pressure i guess and then dropping it by half and would you believe me if i said the game is garbage when all is said and done i think i would honestly say that spongebob's adventures on the gameboy advance were a pleasant surprise actually some of the games were terrible you know why bother sugarcoating it but the movie game creature from the krusty krab and hell even super sponge they weren't the worst things i've ever played which for portable versions of licensed games i gotta tell you my expectations were really really low and then the ds happened what you thought seven gba games were impressive oh that's nothing spongebob managed to grace the ds with a total of nine games and now i have to play all of them i went to college even going beyond the ds the 3ds had some love too remember squiggle pants on the wii with the u-draw tablet well that was also released on the 3ds so you pop that cartridge in and you get to experience this decent 30 minute long warioware clone without needing that stupid tablet accessory cool hero pants released on the 3ds as well and it's just as terrible as it was on the vita good to see we have all the bases covered here we are nearly finally done taking a look at all of these spongebob games that had the audacity to be released to the public more or less just gotta do this disclaimer one more time we're not gonna be talking about any of the nicktoons games that may have spongebob as the star hero we're not gonna be doing that maybe in the future not now because even still we got nine plus games to look at here how did this happen i am rapidly approaching the state of advanced darkness here so why not come on in and join me for the ride this is the final stop of the spongebob video game retrospective the last one i promise you i won off this ride so badly taking a look at these games really brings me back to yet another odd era in gaming a time where nintendo was pretending like both the gba and the ds were going to co-exist rather than the reality of the ds being the obvious next step in the handheld gaming timeline you see the final gba game atlanta squarepants released in late 2007 and while that title did also release on the ds it was actually the third sponge game on the console the first being the yellow avenger releasing two years prior in 2005. well we start this journey one year into the ds's life cycle let's see if spongebob made the jump to two screens gracefully considering that unlike the gba there is no spongebob themed console to play these games on chances are that's a big ol no i'll have you know i played all nine of these games over the span of two weeks and only cried for about 20 minutes mermaid man and barnacle boy is evil nemesis the dirty bubble is at it again he stole mermaid man's special belt oh that dastardly villain well just before spongebob resorts to violence and attempts to stab the villain to death that is pretty extreme in all honesty the bubble gets himself into a washing machine causing him to split into a ton of bubbles so now it's up to spongebob to i guess run around the city and stop a bunch of villains wreaking havoc in bikini bottom huh weird okay so like the opening cutscene almost has no bearing on the entire game aside from the fact that hey there are going to be these tiny little dirty bubbles around the city so they're a little collectible now uh have at it and also now spongebob isn't a bad mermaid man cosplay have fun whatever gets the spongy one to go into a two dimensional plane and do some platforming i guess right one hour later i have no idea what this game is alright so you are regularly working on objectives to help out some residents of bikini bottom but like it's all just done in the most mundane platforming i've ever experienced exploration is clearly the focus here but it all just feels so aimless the controls are incredibly slow and floaty any touchscreen mechanics feel totally shoehorned in in that vintage early ds styled way there's a there's a jellyfish milking mini game oh i don't like this this is on me you know thinking that this is going to be a 2d platformer here but in reality it's just a non-stop barrage of busy work that happens to take place in only two dimensions i'm here to go and fight some villains and use superhero moves and whatnot to defeat them but 30 minutes in i'm doing food delivery is this false advertising can i sue the low poly models are something special though i like these a whole lot i don't know man i do have the game on the psp as well and that console's a bit more powerful so maybe the game fares better there no no no it's it's exactly the same and the worst part i actually thought it was going to be kind of different i'm really losing it aren't i breacher from the crusty carb this time on the ds hooray so if you remember correctly while this game has always been a massive fever dream in an interactive form i thought the console game overstayed its welcome while the way forward developed a gba game was a surprisingly fine time and thankfully wayforward also helmed the ds version all right then time to get my expectations way too high once again make spongebob walk by swiping over him in the direction you want oh oh sweet mother of pearl it's a touch screen game yeah sure enough it's mario vs donkey kong style lemming style that sort of game you got to draw over the characters in order to get them to do anything i can see the designers now they were thinking to themselves you know the one thing that holds platformers back being able to actually control the characters we got to eliminate that part on top of losing direct control there are also fetch quest mechanics this is disgusting there are some fine enough touchscreen minigames now though and there's also some animated cutscenes so that's you know that's that's kind of cool but man you know what i can only pretend to give this game merits for so long this is this is bad once i got to the part where jellyfish started invading plankton mid-dream and i had to blow into the microphone to get rid of them and i also knew to do so because the game features the most generic aerial font i've ever seen this looks like a fan game from the early 90s i hit a breaking point alright i was done in the previous spongebob video i did say that wayforward is actually a company that provides mixed results rather than certified bangers and hey this is a perfect example of that look no further than the gba and ds versions of the same game and we have such a drastic difference what a bizarre timeline we're in but then atlanta square pantis for the ds now thanks to all of the suggestions i've gotten these spongebob videos over the years i came to one solid conclusion really early on that the console version whatever the gba version also whatever it's the ds version of atlanta squarepants that's the one to check out so you guys have my expectations set way high and that's never done me wrong before i'm i'm ready i'm ready i'm ready oh oh oh oh that's why dude the the ds version is a 3d platformer oh wait on on the ds on 3d pla what oh yeah oh yeah this is this is my gym right here oh my god all right you know what this feeling of joy and happiness that i'm currently experiencing i had almost forgotten what this felt like i can't believe it was atlantis square panthers on the ds that makes me feel this way didn't like the console version didn't like the gba version but this one this is a good one so yes this is a 3d side-scrolling platformer with a partner mechanic letting you swap between two characters at the push of a button combine unique abilities when necessary like spongebob being able to inflate on demand you know good good for him i guess and also it forbids you from progressing too far without making sure your partner is right beside you that part is a bit annoying but overall it's not that bad and best of all it's actually kind of enjoyable to control you got to keep this in perspective 3d was hardly the ds's strong suit so the fact that we got this is really impressive like genuinely and then you stand on the back of a boatmobile and you start up an arcade shooter segment dude what is this game why is the ds version of this special episode tie-in the only one that felt competently made the environments are nicely varied the combat is so nonsensical that i am honestly okay with it any touchscreen gimmicks happen very quickly and do not bog down the overall experience listen here okay in the grand scope of platformers and the mound of quality titles on the ds i'm not gonna lie to you and say this is some crazy hidden gem and mario really needs to watch out for himself but you know what i'll be damned if you're into licensed games at all especially if you're nostalgic for spongebob this is a good game by god it's enjoyable and the real kicker and this is a bit of a spoiler but this is not even my favorite 3d platformer featured in this very video but hey like i said i'm getting way too ahead of myself here that's a spoiler you know what you all steered me in the right direction with this one genuinely atlanta squarepants pretty good game didn't see that coming so thank you so much for that this will stay in the collection no matter what but uh what's what's next oh my god i get to talk about drawn to life finally oh man okay i will keep this brief because this will take over literally the entire episode but i love the drawn to life series if you've never given these games a shot well essentially drawn to life is a series of incredibly simple platformers that let you draw a ton of the in-game assets as you're playing if you need a platform for example well the game will stop you you draw whatever you want in this little box and then boom i made that that's my creation that's mine as long as you don't go in expecting some sort of platforming masterpiece here but if you have a baby brain like me and get serotonin by seeing your creations play out in real time these are good fun and up until you get to the second game's original ending it's a charming series overall no no i don't want to talk about the ending clearly these games were popular enough to have a spin-off within the world of bikini bottom drawn to life spongebob squarepants edition doodle bob is back that's a big nihoy minoy moment right there and i guess since sponge and pat just can't be bothered to deal with him today leave it to you the player the omnipotent god in the world to save the day this is my spongebob by the way this is why i have someone else do my thumbnails okay time to draw my very own hero all right who who should be the ultimate bikini bottom hero to save the day when our mightiest heroes just don't feel up to it um [Music] this is my fan fiction don't shame me did you have spongebob being terrified of a poorly drawn sonic on your bingo card for today don't lie to me of course you did so yeah like the rest of the games in the series this is a pretty unremarkable platformer but you often run into these drawing segments where you get to draw in-game elements like checkpoints and bubble platforms when you go back to the hub world you can draw things like houses and furniture four set houses and i don't know considering i'm sticking to this whole sonic thing making a bed with a chaos emerald blanket i am enjoying this immensely every level also has multiple hidden chow in them to find which is crazy since sonic adventure taught us that chow can't swim yet they're all over the water here that's crazy that's where they go when you mess around and put them in the pool in the chow garden they end up here drawn to life can realistically be the dumbest game you want it to be and i couldn't appreciate that more drawn to life is good but it is very much a what you see is what you get kind of game you know but hey at the end of the day two good spongebob games back to back that's really cool i didn't think that was gonna happen here but i really just hope we can keep this train going so uh what's next it's it's a cooking game spongebob versus the big one beach party cook-off rolls right off the tongue i will say this much aside from drawn to life this is the only game in the franchise to be a ds exclusive so yay by this point in the series timeline i no longer was watching the show but i guess there was an episode where this absolute hunk of a fish voiced by johnny depp showed up and it was a big deal i guess certainly how the game makes it sound jack kahuna laguna is in town hosting a beach party and he demands there be a contest to decide who will cook for it well spongebob likes to cook let's go immediately after starting this game up this interface is really bothering me honestly all these cutscenes look like they're from an old pc game from the early 2000s it looks like a flash game here these guys should have had a decent budget right use it taking one look at the box art the expectations are set up pretty clearly this was gonna be a cooking mama clone right there's a bunch of cooking games on the ds with mama as the character spongebob likes to cook this is a perfect combo and wouldn't you know it it is like that oh oh i am so tired things are slightly more complex since you have like a little freedom in when you get to perform the tasks and rather than simply finishing when you make an item and give it to a customer you just keep going until you satisfy a set number of customers in that way it's almost like a restaurant manager like diner dash i didn't think they could make the cooking mama and or diner dash format feel a lot more tedious than they already do but major congrats to beach party cook-off they achieved it and also there's not a single holographic meatloaf in sight terrible obvious fan service you could have had that one for free you know what would have been a really good idea for this they should have used spongebob's mother for this one trying to teach a young spongebob how to cook that way we could have a legit cooking mama crossover the same way we have a drawn to life one but whatever you know i won't be mad about it i'll just stop writing these perfect fanfictions now next up we have truthersquare ds okay now here here is where the real money is so a quick refresher course on this one as well i wasn't huge on the console version it was developed by the battle for bikini bottom devs so that's cool but it was easily their weakest work with the property although every version of the game also has a different yet equally creepy zoom in on spongebob's face as the box art so you know that's something however with the ds version we have another 3d platformer and it's actually pretty good too oh my god that's crazy had to jump back to the opening credits for this one now to see okay altron can't say this is a studio that i've really heard of much before but per their wikipedia they're responsible for just a ton of licensed games but more importantly atlanta's square panthers ds truth or square ds and drawn to life spongebob edition oh criminy jim jim we did it we found the good games here way forward may have had the most interesting trilogy on the gba but i think altron are the ones that provided the most interesting trilogy on the ds this is this is really exciting so essentially truth or square on the ds is a more refined version of atlanta's square pantis it controls a bit better it looks a bit better the exploration is a bit more rewarding the team up mechanic is totally gone making progression a lot more seamless you can still become a big shot after getting happy enough by god this may be the definitive truth or square experience there is some touchscreen and even microphone mechanics here or there and that stuff isn't all that great but man this was overall a genuinely enjoyable game and one of my favorites in the entire spongebob franchise didn't see that coming the entire concept of going through spongebob's memories is still not all that fleshed out since it never really feels like you're reliving the moments from the show but unlike the console versions the levels here actually do end with segments that make sense you got jellyfishing the fry cook games where you go one on one against patrick the talon show where squidward tries to be a big deal but spongebob the janitor is getting a whole lot more applause that's here too damn it i i actually really love this that is all i wanted with truth or square man the accuracy you know at least i don't really remember the giant submarine robot trying to actively kill spongebob with these giant spiky side wheels but hey like i said before i fell off the show for a while maybe robots trying to murder our heroes actually was the theme of an episode i don't know i'm way out of touch and yes we even have the jiggle me handles line two perfect and all this praise i have for random spongebob games is all fine and good but you know what that means being that this is the end of the altron trilogy and we still have three games to go oh but don't you worry if you thought the rest of this episode was going to be all happy and cheery until the end credits roll no absolutely not voting bash on the ds i'm so tired so the wii version of boating bash was honestly kind of okay a car destruction game fits spongebob a whole lot more than a traditional racing game would and the developers did a pretty decent job getting a fun time out of it but if you were wondering if it were possible that cumbersome touch controls for a racing game on the ds would make the game incredibly unfun then good job you nailed it all you do is hold on the touchscreen in the direction the road is maybe bump into another driver if told to do so and i mean i i guess this is the only way to get it done since it's not a traditional racer like mario kart but this game also didn't need to exist in the first place we're back in licensed game hell surf and skate road trip alright this one is a little bit more interesting this does have a console version but yes as you can see it is exclusive to the xbox 360. and say with me children ant is not gonna buy an xbox 360 for a couple of spongebob games thank you so much you've all been paying attention that's great you mean to tell me they added two spongebob games to the backwards compatibility program just to mess with me including one game that i haven't talked about it's not gonna happen oh on top of that it's also a connect game that's a double negative right there hey with that knowledge i don't even need to play the game to know it's not fun this one was obvious well last time i checked you can't hook up a connect to a ds so we're golden now oh oh oh no no your eyes aren't deceiving you this is the game's actual frame rate this is one of the choppiest games i've ever played oh my god how did this get past quality assurance and since we got all these trick challenges for all these board based events the game has the audacity the gall the barnacles to ask you to be precise with this does it even matter if the game is fun i mean of course not because the game is terrible but i'm just saying would it even matter oh but at least the ds version has additional snowboarding gameplay included i take it back clearly the game is good [Music] no questions [Music] what the f what's that last up the final spongebob game to quote grace of the ds plankton's robotic revenge oh god we're really here again aren't we well this isn't the first time i've played this game i did play the only spongebob game to release on the wii u a while back and uh yeah i absolutely hated it just this repetitive and tedious top down shooter it was one of the most boring games i've ever played and regarding somehow squeezing that entire experience to the ds oh yeah man this this is going to be good oh wow yo yeah man oh dude what oh whoa this this is crazy man yeah yeah this is uh this is horrendous loving the spongebob model by the way this is basically what my brain is reduced to at this point you know what like i said with the previous games i guess this is the best you can expect for a ds version of robotic revenge which at the time was a next-gen type game but did they really need to waste resources on this in the first place they released this on the 3ds at the same exact time i don't know maybe the higher production values of the 3ds version provide a better experience wait i hate this game why did i buy it three times considering the ds is more powerful than the game boy advance it's at least notable how much more variety there is to be found here so that's interesting but three good games in a sea of nine the three games on 3ds aren't all that good either it is really telling that the further along the spongebob video game timeline we got outside of a few special circumstances i won't deny that things just got worse and worse and worse and we ended with total rock bottom praise be to wave forward and altron if not for you guys the franchise would be batting a damn near zero this entire retrospective really makes the release of battle for bikini bottom rehydrated and the announcement of the upcoming platformer the cosmic shake all the more impactful there is good to be pulled from this franchise but a lot of companies have no idea how to get it done and we got to see it firsthand hey did you also know that they released rehydrated on mobile devices man that's weird isn't it you could argue that after the original battle for bikini bottom spongebob squarepants video games weren't bad they were just simply misunderstood it would be a dumb argument to make but hey you can still make it of course these games are bad but now you know what time it is it's time for the spongebob ds tier list let's go of course at the very top we have truth or square then atlanta square pantis and then drawn to life altron that trilogy you guys did really good awesome stuff after that god just just like the rest of them honestly they were all really really rough and then put surf and skate road trip and robotic revenge right at the very bottom in the trash bin where they belong god what were they thinking and with that being said we're done it all started with battle for bikini bottom but then one eternity later the spongebob video game retrospective is completed now yes of course we have the cosmic shake coming out soon that should be really cool inevitably more games will follow after that and yes once again i know we haven't talked about every single game out there there's web browser games there's flash games there's all the nicktoons games like i mentioned earlier underpants slam is now an xbox backwards compatibility not talking about it there's that weird plug and play where you hold spongebob's nose in a potentially demonetizing way probably not going to touch that one either but for all of the games that released on consoles that realistically matter let's be honest here i'm done nearly 40 games that have spongebob in the title have been taken off my backlog and i am a much lesser person as a result but genuinely i want to thank you all for the support on this little adventure that i went on i did not expect the reception that i was getting for all these spongebob videos and you really kept me going to get through to the end no matter how dark things got so with that all being said go and play battle for bikini bottom jiggle me handle spongebob enjoy a nice holographic meatloaf on me find your nearest copies of plankton's robotic revenge and throw them in the trash so you can make the world a better place and with that i'm gone goodbye everybody i'll remember you all in therapy [Music]
