Oh, hello. So you think we scored points with Ma by coming here? Oh, I think I see free baby sitting in our future. You know, Kobe will be at his dad's. I was thinking maybe we'd sneak away next weekend to celebrate. Celebrate what? Only the best six months of your life. Wait, did you forget? I already booked a hotel. Ooh, you are so mean! Mean? Sweet. Yeah, that's better. Just everything I want. Tiffany. Hey. You remember Reverend Lewis. Oh, come on. It hasn't been that long since I've been to church. Hi, reverend. I understand the wedding in city hall was lovely. Yeah, we would have come to you, but you're always so busy. Yes, but why hasn't he seen you at church, Tiffany. Tell him. Nothing dramatic, Reverend. Just, you know, no crisis of faith or anything like that. There's just so much going on. What they're trying to say, Reverend, is they just too busy for church. So we can expect to see you both at service next Sunday? Um, sure, yeah. You think your mom set us up? Now you see what my childhood was like. It made you the guilt ridden woman that I love. Cut it out. Hey, where are the kids? By the trees. Yeah. You look good flipping that meat. Kobe! Max! Ellis! Hey, where's Kobe? We don't know. He's hiding. So you're just gonna leave your boy in the woods like that. We can't find him. Kobe, come down from there. We're playing a game. I know, but rules are still rules. You don't play where we can't see you and-- I know. --and you can't see us. But I could see you. I was in the tree. Yeah? I couldn't see you. But I was hiding. Kobe, I mean it, come down right now. OK. Mama, how did you find me? Kobe, I'd find you wherever you were. How? Because you are a part of me. You're getting so big. Come on. There are your buddies. Gonna go play? I still think a week in Florida is a bad idea. Mom, how am I gonna tell Kobe he can't go to Disney World with his father? No, that's how you say it. Look, it's their first father and son trip out of state. Well, let 'em hoist a tent in your backyard and call that an out-of-state trip. That's horrible. Chris! Ma, don't put him in the middle of this. I'll see you in the morning before you go. Love you, Grammy. Ma, don't worry so much. That's what mothers do. See you at home. I love you. I love you. (SINGING) For health and strength and family, too, we praise thy name, oh, Lord. Amen. Don't forget, every night. I know. I say this prayer before I go to bed and you'll be with me in my heart. You know everything these days. Go to sleep. Papa says I can ride the Space Ranger, meet Mickey, and eat all the ice cream I want. Oh, sounds like fun. Can we come with you next time? If my papa says so. Did your papa say whose credit card number he stole to pay for all this? Mom, stop it. Just a little bit come back here so He is very good with Kobe. Yes, he is. I wouldn't have married him if he weren't. We both know Jeff is no Chris. Oh, here we go. You can't let Jeff take that boy to Florida. Mom, it is too late for this. Besides, you heard what the court said. Jeff gets Kobe for a week every summer. I have to work with Jeff, not alienate him. But you're the boy's mother. Jeff is his father. What kind of father has never paid a dime in child support? Mom, he's got a job now. He's been in a relationship with Natalie for awhile. He's even agreed to help pay for camp this summer. No! I've got you! No! Jeff's changed, OK? He's earned the right to take his son on a vacation. Tiffany, you're wrong. People don't change. I refuse to believe that. After all the crap he's pulled, you still defend him. It's called forgiveness. Isn't that what the reverend preaches every Sunday in church, mom? Good Lord, I gave birth to a saint. Champ, come on, let's go pack. Here you go buddy. Don't let him take your baby to Florida. Mom! A phone? For me? Yes, so you can call me whenever you want to. You don't even have to dial. My number's already in there. Let me show you. I know. How do you know? Because Papa lets me use his phone. Oh. Well, that's nice of him. So if your phone doesn't work, you can use his to call me, right? OK. OK. Come on, let's get the books you want to take. Six letter word for ghostly. Pallid. Thanks. Hi, Chris. Hey. Belzora. Hello, Jeff. Well, I'm gonna tell my grandson goodbye and head to choir rehearsal. Take good care of him. So Disney World, huh? What I do with my son is my business. Excuse me? Daddy. [laughing] [speaking korean] Remember, I say-- And you say-- Good job. Where's Natalie? She's not coming. I wanted Kobe to myself this week. Oh, OK. Let's take a picture. Ready? OK. Can I bring my football? There's no room, buddy. But I'll buy you a new one when we get to Disneyland. Disneyland or Disney World? Which one is it, Jeff? You know what I meant, Tiff. I gave you all the info. Disney World, the one in Florida. Right, Kobe? Yeah. Are you sure it's secured properly? I think I can handle a booster seat, Tiffany. Look, Jeff, I really can't worry about little things like this the whole week. Give me a break. Should I bring you a present? Yeah, a tiny one. Say goodbye, Kobe. We gotta get moving. Right, buddy? Yeah! Wait. I'm gonna miss you so much, Kobe. I'm gonna miss you too, mama. Make sure you call me every night, OK? Tiffany, he'll call you in a few days. I worry. This is my time with him. Stop. Kobe's my only child, my only family. I'd die before I let anything bad happen to him, OK? We'll be fine. OK. All right. Be good, Kobe. I love you. I love you too, mama. You all right? Yeah. Yeah, I'm good. I'm OK. Let's go inside. OK. [music playing] [chatter] Hey, Ms. Rubin. Hey. Come play with us. OK. Whoop! Caught it. To go. ALL: I go. You go. He, she, it goes. Very good. Hey, what's up? Sofia. Kobe's out of town. Chris is working late. I'm thinking cocktails. Let's roll. Hey, mom. Hi. Is Chris home? Uh-huh, just. Oh, hey, babe. Hey. So how was everyone's day? Well, it was great. Had a good time with, uh-- what? You're staring. We're not staring. You're staring. We know it's killing you. What? You called him, didn't you? Why do you have so little faith in me? This coming from the woman who secretly opens her Christmas presents and rewraps them. Really? She does that? You didn't know that? You know you called him. It has been four whole days, and no I have not. Then you owe me a large frozen yogurt with toppings. We said small. You know what? No one tells me when or if I should call my son. Yeah, I'm gonna call Kobe and leave a little message. I miss him. And he's gotta miss me too, right? Yes, by all means, call Kobe and put him out of his misery. That's what I'm gonna do. Hey, Kobe, it's me, mom. Well, I was just calling to say hi. OK, well, be good. And brush your teeth. And have fun with your dad, OK? I love you. I really want to talk to him now. Well, go on, call the motel. This is OK, right? Of course. I'm his mother. I can do this. My mom used to write me a letter every day when I went to sleepaway camp. That explains why you moved 3,000 miles away from her. Hi. Yes, Jeff Lee, please? L-E-E. Are you sure? Well, can you please check to see if they're expected? This is the Red Horse Inn, right? OK. Thanks. Mm-hmm. Jeff, it is so typical of you to change your plans and not tell me. So can you please call me as soon as you get this message? Thank you. Are you sure there are no recorded accidents? OK, and your information covers all of Virginia? Yes, a gray Corolla, traveling south on 95. OK. Thank you. Where the hell are they? The good news is no accidents. He thinks nothing of changing his plans, never mind who it affects. You want to get the police involved? I would know if something was wrong with Kobe, right? If something happened, I would know. Yeah, I would know. This is just Jeff being a jerk. All the more reason to call the cops on him. I'm gonna check one more thing in the morning. [music playing] Hi, are you the super? What do you need? Jeff Lee, well, he's my son's father. And they left for Florida a few days ago and I haven't heard anything from them. I was just wondering if you could help me. Sure. How? Can you let me into his apartment? Oh, no, no, no. Can't do it. I could lose my job. I got kids, too. Please, look, I won't touch anything. He won't even know I was there. I just need to see if there's something that says where they might have gone. Please. I can't help you. Sorry. Thank you. I won't touch anything. Does your ex-husband have any relatives you can talk to? No. Not really, look, he's estranged from his parents. Jeff's my child's father. We-- we never married. You said that he's not due back until-- Sunday. He's got two days left. Mrs. Rubin, what makes you think there's something going on? He's moved out of his apartment and he lied about where he was going. But you gave him permission to take your son out of state for a week. I had no choice. We share custody. And let me tell you, it hasn't been easy. Why? I have had to go to court to get Kobe back from weekends because Jeff doesn't always return him on time. So why didn't you go back to the courts, ask them to alter your custody agreement? Well, because that was years ago when we first separated. Look, I thought he had changed, OK? I thought things were getting better. To be honest, this is sounding like we're getting half of a he said, she said thing here. He's disappeared with my son and I haven't heard from him in five days! Mrs. Rubin, unfortunately, there's no law against being a jerk. We're going to have to wait on this. Natalie, please talk to me. I don't know who else to ask. Where's Jeff? Oh, I don't know. I moved out. Well, what happened? You know Jeff. I mean, he lost his job and then he just got crazy. He was going down and I wasn't going there with him. You don't have any idea where he is? No. Note to self, next time don't look for your Prince Charming on Myspace. Where you going? Downstairs. Do you want company? No, babe, that's OK. Go back to sleep. Let's see. No. Pittsburgh Steelers. Please. Steelers? Yeah. OK. Wondering if you could pay me back. Ha. He hasn't changed. Love to travel. Tropical is nice. Maybe we can meet in Honolulu? Would be great to get to know you better in person. Got you. I found this email that says Jack is going to Hawaii. They're supposed to be at Disney World, not Hawaii. We didn't discuss Hawaii. And if Kobe's with him, isn't that a violation of our custody agreement? You gave him permission to take your son out of state for a week. To Florida. And that week will be up tomorrow. Look, can we just try and find him before he takes my son to Hawaii. How did you get this? Be careful, Mrs. Rubin. Privacy laws are very clear. Officer Gomez, do you have kids? Yes, I have two. What would you do if they promised to call and you didn't hear from them in six days? Would you just sit around and wait for time to pass before you did something? Mrs. Rubin-- No, how would you pass time? Go to a movie? OK, what the heck. Call JFK see if they have departure details for Kobe Lee and Jeffrey Lee. Thank you. Thank you. Mrs. Rubin, Jeff Lee flew to Korea on Monday. He took Kobe with him. No. No. No, he can't do that. No, he can't-- he can't take my son to Korea. He can't take my son away from me without my permission! No! I'll call this into the FBI. They can take it from here. [sobbing] Please. Mrs. Rubin, I'm so sorry. [screaming] [somber music] [panting] What did they say? Are they gonna send someone to find him? I told you what they said, Chris. I'm trying to help you here. I know. I just don't understand what happened. They were spending every other weekend together. Jeff was showing up on time, dropping Kobe off on time. He was setting you up. How could I have been so damn blind? (SINGING) For health and strength and family too, we praise thy name oh Lord. Amen. We'll find you, Kobe, I promise. I'm Connie De Grazia. I'm the agent in charge of your case. I have just a minute and then I'll pass you on. The main thing we want to tell you is we have a federal warrant for Jeff Lee's arrest for forging your son's passport. We'll make a case to the South Korean government for the return of your son. We'll keep you informed as we can. It's an ongoing investigation so we won't be able to tell you much. You'll have some questions for the family liaison officer. Hi, I'm Agent Walters, the family liaison officer, the shoulder to lean on. There's something called the Hague treaty, which requires all the countries who sign it to abide by each other's custody decisions. Unfortunately, South Korea never signed. So there's the issue of who has jurisdiction. It's tricky. Yeah, so what happens if the Korean government turns us down? You can bring a lawsuit in South Korea. But we have a long way to go before we get to that. So what am I supposed to do until then? What am I supposed to do in the meantime? I have a list of support groups, parents like yourself who share information and help keep spirits up. I don't need to make me feel better. I mean, what can we do to get Kobe back? You can be patient and let us do our job. Please. Hey. Hey. I covered for you at the meeting today, but Principal Green got a little salty. You need to be at the next one. Thanks, just put it right there. How's it coming? Women have always been Jeff's weak spot. Meet Renita. Let's see. Hi, Jeff. I saw your pictures and thought you looked sexy. I'm Renita. And I want to meet you. Anywhere. Anytime. Too slutty? No such thing. Send? No, wait, say something about his muscles. You got it all wrong. Tell him your measurements. OK. 36, 24, 36, brick house. This ain't no song girl. You know what that man wants. 40, 26, 36. Hey, now. Tiff. What are you doing here? I took the afternoon off so I could go with you. Yeah, but you're missing a whole shift. Oh, babe, look, I want to do more than just stuff envelopes and hope. I'm going with you. I want to know what's going on. I miss Kobe, too. I miss us. OK. Finding missing children takes old-fashioned detective work. Your best chance is to hire the best investigators. And we are the best. Now Korea is tricky. But if it's humanly possible, we'll get him back. How many cases do you solve, I mean, as a percentage? That's a complicated question. Well, can you uncomplicate it for us? It depends how difficult the case is and what you mean by solved. But we don't stop until after we find them. We have trained mediators who can establish contact with the boy's father. See, I'm not interested in mediating. I just want my son back. Right, well, we have these options. What's your fee? Typically these cases run between $100,000 to $200,000 by the time it's all finished. It could be more. And by finished, do you mean I will have Kobe back? We don't guarantee a result. Mrs. Rubin, I know it sounds like a lot of money. But you have to ask yourself how much is Kobe worth? I know you didn't just ask me to put a price on my son's head. We've got 5,000 saved. I can get another 20 from my parents. We can get 10 from your mom. Chris, we'll still be $60,000 short. Well, you can get a loan from your teachers credit union. Chris! You're not hearing me. I can ask my boss for a loan. Chris, stop. Please. This is not about the money. This is about getting Kobe back. And no one can guarantee that will happen. Look, it's not your problem. Of course it is. How could you say that? Because Kobe is my son. Whoa. Whoa, wow, wow, hold on. Look, I know you're upset right now. But how could you say that to me? Oh, come on, Chris. I didn't mean it like that. Well, how did you mean it? Huh? What is a father, Tiffany? Maybe you don't know because you never really had one. That's not fair. That's not even right. Is it really just biological? I mean, I take Kobe to school every day. We play catch. I love him. If that doesn't make Kobe my son, then he never will be and we will never be a family. Is that what you're saying? No. No, of course not, Chris. Look, I am on overload here, OK? I cannot think about you and Kobe. My focus has to be 100% on getting him back. That's not an excuse, Tiffany. Just don't cut me out. Baby. We said a special prayer for you at church today. What good is another prayer going to do? I've been on my knees every night. Kobe's still not back and I don't have the money to get him back. Well, the Reverend gave me the name of a man who might be able to help. Oh, yeah, right. Like the realtor from church who sold your condo for half the price last year or the stockbroker from church who lost that $5,000. Ma, this is not a job for prayer or some guy from church. This is a job for the FBI or the CIA or some professional bounty hunter that I can't afford, OK? You need to use everything you have, Tiffany, including your husband. Please, listen. So you can say you told me so? No thank you. Tiffany Merle Rubin! Ma, please just leave me alone. Ma! Chris! Renita got a hit! Mom! Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm Renita. You're exactly how I pictured you. Is that a compliment? What do you think? I think that I would like to hook up with you. Would you like that, Jeff? I'm really feeling this. Are you? Where are you? I'm serious, Jeff. I got a whole lot of frequent flyer miles and I could be on a plane by this weekend. You'd fly across the world to meet me? Who wouldn't? OK. I'll meet you at-- Daddy. Daddy! Who is that? This is my son, Kobe. He's my best friend Right, Kobe? Yes, papa, you're my best friend. Kobe. Who was that? Mommy? Kobe! Kobe! Kobe! [somber music] Chris! Chris! They found him! Kobe is in Seoul, Korea. His father said he had to take Kobe because the boy was suffering physical abuse and neglect at the home of his mother and was in danger. He claims that he is the victim of racial attitudes against Koreans in the US, which led to unfair court decisions. Jeff does not wish to be in contact with Kobe's mother. Good, because I don't want to be in contact with Jeff. The report ends with Kobe saying that he does not wish to be in contact with his mother either. What? It actually says that? No. No. No. Kobe would never say that. That's just Jeff talking. Where are they? We have the court records. Mr. Lee has made these charges before. They've all been rejected. Where is he, please? It says here that you are Kobe's primary care taker. We'll send these on to the authorities in Korea. But you have this information from the State Department. Surely you know where Kobe is, I mean, the address, right? Yes. Well, why can't you just send somebody in there to get him. We need the permission of the Korean authorities. Well, can't you give it to me? No, I'm sorry. It's against agency policy. But what if I just want to write to him or just call my baby? We don't share the information. I don't understand all of this Who are you keeping it from? I mean, Jeff knows where he is. Kobe knows where he is. Frankly, we don't want to encourage parties to take matters into their own hands. OK, so you know, Jeff know, Kobe knows. I am his mother and my six-year-old son has been stolen from me! You work for me! You're supposed to be on my side! That's why my tax dollars pay for! Ms. Reuben, if you'll calm down. OK, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. This is my baby. I'm sorry. I understand. How long is it gonna take to get this permission? It's hard to say-- Days? Years? Months? Weeks? Please. Mrs. Rubin, do you know how many cases I have? How many parents that are in exactly your situation that feel the exact same way you do? Do you know how many children I have? Hmm? Just one. And he's been kidnapped. I'm not going to be patient. Out of all the things I need right now, patience is way down the list, way. Go away. If you don't pull it together, you're gonna lose everything. I already have. Should I tell that to your friends who have been calling here every day or your husband? My relationship with Chris is none of your business. I live here too! And I don't like what I'm seeing! Tiffany, I did not raise you to sit here in the dark like a lump on a log. Do something! What? I know you blame me for all of this. And you're right, OK? You're right. I let this happen. I should have just listened to you. Now you feel guilty. Well don't. I'm partially responsible. How? You told me not to let Kobe go. Because when your father left, I made it hard for you to see him. I know you missed having a father and you didn't want Kobe to feel the same way. I think that's why you tried so hard with Jeff. How could I ever love somebody like that? What kind of person would do something like this? You've always been good. It's hard for good people to imagine that someone could be so bad. Jeff took advantage of that. We've got to stop feeling guilty about all this and get Kobe back. Now get dressed. Why? Remember that man I heard about in church? You're meeting him in an hour. Hello? Hello? Hello? Mr. Miller? Down here, Ms. Rubin. Hello? Getting closer. Keep walking. Mr. Miller? I know it's hard, but she took your kids and you had sole custody. That's true, but her criminal record is why you had sole custody. Good luck. Let me know. Cops won't even talk to you without a warrant. Hi. I'm Mark-- Miller, I know. Your mother is very persistent. Tell me about it. I hope it runs in the family. Persistence? Planning and provenance. [phone ringing] I'm gonna let that ring so we can talk. OK. This is Mark. Yes, that's true. I'm primarily funded through grants. Yeah, listen, can I-- can I take your number and call you back? Yeah, go. OK, I'll call you as soon as I can. Thanks. You do all of this for free? No, it's not exactly free, but my clients don't pay for it. I mean, you give money to a church or charity, sometimes this is where it goes. Why do you do this? Everybody asks me that. What's so crazy about bringing families back together? Why are you here? Am I your last stop? I have nowhere else to go. I just want my son back. About 10 years ago, I saw a boy's face on a milk carton. A week or so later, another carton of milk, another kid and so on. I had to do something. So it's like a calling. I guess. I don't have any children of my own. So I think of these lost kids as mine, in a way. I mean, there's more to family than just biology, right? So that's about it. It's been three months and we've been stuck in this strange limbo. It's like all the clocks have turned off. How's it going with the State Department? Very frustrating. They've shuffled me around through their various departments like a deck of cards. And they're not into sharing information. You are the primary caregiver? In the eyes of the law, yes. That's good. But you don't know where Kobe is. South Korea, Seoul. I've worked in Europe and in the Middle East, but never in South Korea. I don't have any contacts there. You've got to have contacts. I want to help you, but I can't. I'm sorry. That's too bad. I thought you were the one. If I were to do this alone, I mean, take Kobe back, how would I go about it? Mrs. Rubin, I can't recommend you try that. That's really dangerous. What's the process? Please, just tell me how would you do it? If he were in the US, I would make sure there was a warrant for Jeff's arrest, missing persons report, and a court order revoking joint custody. And then I would get local law enforcement involved and help secure the child. In a foreign country? There's no set procedure. You get everything in place. You have to find out where Kobe is and figure out how to get him out. Like I said, it would make a difference if you had contacts within the Korean police department because if you get caught, you will spend serious time in a Korean prison. Look, I can tell you one thing that has sometimes worked for us in the past. Teachers often have websites where they share information. If you were to post Kobe's information on a couple of Korean teacher's sites, if he's in school, you might get a hit. OK, I'll try that. Thank you. I really appreciate your help. [phone ringing] This is Mark. Yeah. Two months on this website and not one teacher in Korea has seen Kobe. I mean, he's gotta stick out like a sore thumb. Wasted all of my vacation days going to useless meetings, sitting in front of this computer, and I still don't know where he is. There was a guy on the news yesterday whose wife took their son to Brazil and never came back. He hasn't seen him in five years. What if that happens-- Honey, you have to have faith. Mom, do you really believe that? Huh? Because I'm trying real hard to wake up. Every day, I go to work and check my emails and check my mail and believe somehow, someway that I am gonna wake up out of this nightmare. Nothing. [bell ringing] [chatter] [yelling] Don't! Are you all right? What happened to your book bag? I dropped it. Yeah? Take your books and go to class. I'll dry it and bring it to you, OK? Kobe, go to class. Kobe. Kobe? SIMON (ON PHONE): Mrs. Rubin? My name is Simon. I'm a part-time English teacher in Korea. I saw your poster on a website. Yes. SIMON (ON PHONE): I know where Kobe is. Is he OK? SIMON (ON PHONE): Physically, he's fine. He looks healthy. But I would have to say no, he's not all right. He's not doing well here. He doesn't understand what's going on in class. The other kids either ignore him or bully him because of his foreignness. This is a beautiful country but it's not the right place for your son right now. You should get him out of here. I'm trying. Please tell me how. I can't tell you that. I have to be careful. His father is a legal parent here. Even what I've told you now would be aiding and abetting a kidnapping. OK, so where can I find you? I can't give you my mobile number. But I will call you again, I promise. Please just tell me where he is. Hello? Hello? What will I need? A passport? I can't endorse this, Tiffany. Don't do it. Persistence, planning, providence. Do I need a visa? Only if you plan to stay. I can show you how to get an emergency passport right away. If anyone asks, you're a tourist. But you'll need a passport for Kobe. Well, can't I get that here in the US? No, you'll have to have Kobe with you to get it. Well, I guess I'll be stopping by the US embassy to get one on my way out of Korea. You realize if you get caught, you'll go to jail. I'm already in jail, Mark! And I will not be free until Kobe is home with me. Fine. I'm going with you. Oh, I can't ask you to take that risk. You didn't ask. Tell me this, if you get Kobe and you manage to get to the consulate and get his passport, how are you gonna get him to the plane? You'll have cops looking for you. All they have to do is go to the airport and wait. But you haven't been there either. No, but they'll be looking for two people. If there's three instead of two, the odds are a little better. Mark, I appreciate that. But I can barely afford my ticket and Kobe's. It's covered. How? Have faith, Tiffany. I don't-- I don't know what to say. Let's get real here. Do you know how many Black people there are in Korea? No. Yeah, that's because the number is too small to count. You'd stick out like a sore thumb. That's why I'm going with her. Neither one of you knows anything about this guy, Simon. What if he's mistaken? What if he's lying? What if he's not? You could end up like those two journalists they held until Bill Clinton went and got them. Ma, that was North Korea. If you get locked up, Bill Clinton ain't coming to get you. You'd never see Kobe again. Chris, help me. What can I say? She's made up her mind. Tiffany, are you sure you want to do this? I am going to Korea to get my child. OK. OK, Tiffany, I see you now. Yes, you can do this. OK, so as soon as Simon calls, we'll book two tickets to Seoul and reserve the hotel. Well, it's three tickets to Seoul. Two. Three. Two. I know you're mad. Hell yeah, I'm mad. Would you rather I go by myself? No. I'd rather you go with me. You have shut me out of all of this. It's not right. We made a vow. I meant it. Did you? Yes. Then let me help you. When we got married, I thought all of my problems with Jeff would just magically disappear. And they didn't. They got worse. Yeah. That's because I didn't deal with him in the first place. I should have stopped making excuses for Jeff. I just didn't want you to have to deal with all of this. Why? Because I thought it was too much and that if things got too tough, that you would leave. I would never do that. I know. Baby, I'm sorry. I got you. I want to come with you. No. No, Chris, you gotta stay. No. Yes, Chris. Kobe is your son. And I need to know that if something happens to me, that you'll be here to fight for him and love him the way you love me. OK? Please, I need this. You're both coming back? Yes, I promise. I promise. [phone vibrating] Hello? SIMON (ON PHONE): Mrs. Rubin? Simon. I didn't call them. I know. I did. Rev, thank you all for coming on such short notice. Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then let us celebrate with a feast because this son of mine was lost and has been found. (SINGING) For health and strength and family too, we praise thy name, oh Lord. Amen. Tiffany, know that we are here with you, surrounding you and your family with prayer. We will hold you until you bring Kobe home safe. Thank you, Reverend. Thank you all. [speaking korean] American? Yes. What is the nature of your business? Tourist. Traveling by yourself? No, we're together. Husband and wife? No. How long are you staying? Just a few days. So tourists? Yes. Do you have any friends here? No. Where are you staying? A hotel. What is the name of hotel? I don't know. We haven't decided yet. Welcome to Korea. Thanks. We would like adjoining rooms, please. Adjoining rooms. [speaking korean] It's open. Hi. Great color. How's your room? Oh, I guess I have the deluxe suite because I have two chairs. Ready? Yeah. [chatter] He's late. What if he doesn't come? Let's give him some time. Did you bring the photo? Mrs. Rubin? Yes. I'm Simon. Hi. And you must be Mark. Yeah, hi. I'm sorry, but I had to make sure you weren't being followed. Shall we walk? OK. Is the hotel all right? It's fine. It's not far from the school. Kobe's father may suspect you're coming to get him. Yeah, I spoke with his teachers. He's taking him out of school. When? I'm not sure, but soon. You'll have to act quickly. You should think about whether you want to do this. It's not a crime until you actually have Kobe with you. Oh, I'm not going back without him. Then I advise you to keep out of sight as much as possible. That's fine. I've drawn you a map of the school. Good. All right, let's get started. [bell ringing] MARK (VOICEOVER): Simon's map of the school shows that there are only two approaches. Kobe's classroom is on the first floor. If we can't take him on the way to school, you'll have to get him out of class. Evidently, it's common for parents to come and ask to see their children if they've forgotten their homework. But we'll only have a few minutes. And when Kobe doesn't come back, the teacher will report it to the principal. And the principal will call the police. The taxi stand is a few blocks from the school. It'll take some time to get there. We'll have to count on the police being notified during this time. And there may be police at the taxi stand. So I think it would be best if we take different routes to get there. There's a shortcut through the market you can take that comes out right where I'll be waiting for you. I'll time the taxi ride so we'll know exactly how long it'll take. Did you see Kobe? I think I missed him. It was raining. It was crowded. Everybody was under umbrellas. Yeah, or Jeff knows we're here and he kept him at home. No, it was probably me. I just missed him. Well, how long do we have after we get him? I stopped by the embassy. They closed at 11 on Friday mornings and they don't open again until Monday. So from the time we get him, we only have 45 minutes. And it's a half hour cab ride to the embassy. Yeah, but the embassy, they're expecting us, right? No, if they knew we were taking Kobe, they'd have to report it to the Korean police. We don't even know if he's in the school. We could wait until Monday and make sure. No. No, no, no, let's not wait. What about our bags? That's too obvious. We're gonna leave them here and pick them up on the way to the embassy. Now, this is your route through the market. I'll take this street. What if I mess up? You won't. You know he's been gone five months? Maybe he's lost the last of his baby teeth. Or maybe he grew an inch taller. What if he forgot our nighttime prayer? So yeah, God willing, we will get him back, but I'll never get that time back. You'll make up for it with new memories. What if I show up there tomorrow in that classroom and Kobe does not want to see me? What if-- what if he wants to stay with his father? Tiffany, listen, no matter what happens tomorrow, Kobe will at least know that you cared enough to try. Thank you. [speaking korean] [knocking] Come in! It's game time. [music playing] [chatter] [bell ringing] That was Jeff. I know. Did he see you? I don't think so. If he saw you, he's setting us up. How? He's going to wait till we have Kobe and then sick the police on us. I don't think he saw me. The classroom is here. OK. [speaking korean] I don't speak Korean. I'm American. Ah. You know San Francisco? Not very well. Lots of rain, damp, cold. Somebody forget a book. Excuse me, I've got to go to the restroom. [speaking korean] Hi, I'm looking for my son Kobe. Ah, Kobe Lee, across the hall, that way. OK. Uh, you have a great classroom. We're teachers in New York. Ah, New York? I teach geography. So it's a special treat to come to Korea. Yes, sir. You must all come to New York. [speaking korean] He's in there. Kobe. Kobe. Kobe. Mama? Mama! [speaking korean] [speaking korean] When you gotta go, you gotta go. What are you doing here? I came to take you home. You mean our home? Yes. My papa said you didn't want me. Oh, Kobe, that could never be true, ever. Are we going now? Yes. Should I get my stuff? Oh, no, no, no, no, no. We gotta leave it. We gotta leave it, OK? My flipbook. We'll have someone send it. Why? Because we can't miss the plane. Here comes my wife and my son. I've enjoyed talking to you. I wait. Can I meet your wife and son? - Hi, sweetheart. - Hi. Hi, Kobe. This is my wife Tiffany and my son Kobe. Maybe you haven't seen your papa in a long time, huh? Yeah, a very long time. How long you stay in Korea? Just a few days. You like school here? It's OK. Nobody likes school anyway. You study hard, you learn to speak Korean. Yes. It was nice meeting you. Let me hear you say something in Korean. [speaking korean] I'll see you there. How come you're wearing that? Because I have a cold. How come he said he was my father? We're just playing this little game. You want to play? Put this on. OK, it's like we're secret spies. Stay close OK, Kobe? You gotta to keep up with mama. Can you do that? Remember, still playing the game, right? I can keep up. Kobe. Kobe! Kobe! Mama, here! Kobe, run! Tiffany! You take this one. I'm waiting I'm waiting for someone. No, this way. Come on, this way. Excuse me. Excuse me! This way. This way. Come on. Hurry. We got 20 minutes. I'll check us out while you change. Hello? We're leaving. Are we gonna tell papa? No. Will he be mad at me? No, not at all. Will he be mad at you? Maybe, but he'll get over it. Here sweetheart, put that on. It's pink. I don't like pink. Just do it. I look like a girl. Kobe, put it on. Look, you have to do what I say, OK? Kobe, come on. Can you get us to the US embassy by 11:00? I'll try. It's going to be tight. [speaking korean] US Embassy. Embassy is closed. It's two minutes to 11:00. We're US citizens. We're US citizens. We need help. Hey, Kobe, can you come with me for a minute? I'm going to ask you a question and I want you to give me an honest answer. Can you do that? Yes. OK. Do you want to go home with your mom or do you want to stay here with your dad? It's OK, you have a choice. I do? Mm-hmm. I want to go home with my mom. Are you sure? Yes. Are you worried about something? I'm worried that my dad will be mad at me and will come and take me back. OK. Can you wait here for a minute? His father did report you. There are warrants out for your arrest. They've asked us to keep you here, stop you from leaving the country with Kobe. I have a court order giving Mrs. Rubin sole custody. And I have a warrant for the arrest of Kobe's father. Our office is closed until Monday, which means we won't even be able to read the Korean warrants until then. We'll make a temporary passport for Kobe. As long as you're on embassy grounds, you're safe. But when you reach the airport, I'm afraid you'll be on your own. Chris, we have him. Yes. OK, baby, wait, wait. Put this back on. OK? Thank you. Here. OK, Kobe, so we're gonna play pretend. We're gonna be a family, OK? It's a part of the game. Tokyo? I changed the tickets. They're gonna be looking for us on the flight to New York. So we change planes in Tokyo. Would you look at that. Let's wait and see if they take a break. Kobe, we're still in the game, right? This is the part of the game where I need you to go with Mark and do what he says. It isn't a game, is it? Yeah, it's a game. It's a very serious game, OK? And I'm going to need you to be serious like you are when you play hide and seek, right? You know what? I've come so far to find you, I will never ever let you go again. OK? Do what Mark says. Take one of these suitcases for me. How come you said you were my dad? Well, to tell you the truth, we were trying to fool some people. My dad? Yeah. We were trying to fool everybody. Will he be mad at you? Maybe, but he won't be mad at you because it wasn't your fault. We made you do everything. We even made you dress up silly. Am I supposed to look like a girl? Yeah, you mind? Hey, you don't play Tic-tac-toe, do you? Sure. Yeah, are you pretty good? Well, you want to go play a game? OK. OK. You have to promise to take it easy on me though, OK? Sorry. Hello, Tiffany. I thought you'd be too smart to come. That's not very friendly. We're not friends, Jeff. Where's Kobe? Do you think I'd tell you? I'll call the cops. Go ahead. I'm the legal guardian here. I can have you arrested on the spot. Let me go, Jeff. Let me have him and I'll let you go. I'll never let you have him. You won't be much of a mother to him in jail. Oh, yeah? I wonder how many years you'd get for forging Kobe's passport? Are you playing chicken with me? Why did you do this, Jeff? I don't live by your rules. You don't live by anyone's rules. Look, I'll make you a deal, OK? Let's share. Leave him with me now and I'll bring him back for the holidays. No. Then let me see him before you go. Do you think I'm stupid? I'm his father. I need to tell him I love him. A child needs to hear that from his father. But you don't love him, Jeff. If you did, you wouldn't have done this. You did this to get back at me. You never should have left. We were good together, a real family. You don't know what family is. Goodbye, Jeff. [speaking korean] Excuse me, I'm sorry. Excuse me. Excuse me, I'm sorry. Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. Mama! Guess what? Game's over. Not till takeoff. Miss? Yes? Did you want a vegetarian meal today? No. [laughing] [music playing]
