Same, Odyssey's movement is a TON better, powerups included (in my opinion.) In 3D world you can crouch boost and vector and, that's it for complicated movement. Odyssey has vectoring, roll cancelling, triple throws, dive vaulting, MCCTs, etc. Odyssey's advanced movement is just so much better than 3DWs advanced movement and he didn't talk about any of this in his video

So, Odyssey’s movement is far more more versatile and has far more depth, no question. And the camera is miles better, as well.

But what Odyssey does with its open-ended format in comparison to Bower’s Fury is night and day.

Bowser’s Fury feels like 3D World’s levels adapted into a single map, rather than having them separated by a level select or map screen. It excels at incorporating focused action in a free-roam map. It’s also very good at reusing those areas and guiding the player to and around them.

But what Odyssey does is a much better use of an open-ended space. Whereas Bowser’s Fury focuses more on on pathways, Odyssey is more concerned about populating the maps with several points of interest that grab the player’s attention. It makes use of as much as space as it can with a much better spread and density.

So, I mean, I love both games to death, they’re both great, but very different approaches. Odyssey just feels much more complete and well-considered, while Bowser’s Fury feels like what it is, which is an experimental expansion to a pre-existing title.

If they were to ever go fully open-world, I hope they can find a middle-ground between the two styles, and evolve it for that new format.

super mario odyssey versus bowser's fury personally bowser's fury is my favorite 3d mario since mario 64 and it really got me thinking why do i feel so strongly about this is there a reason i prefer this side game over something as massive as odyssey that's when i decided to really take a further look into which game is truly better because they're so similar yet so different at the same time we'll break everything down into categories and just jump into it [Music] admittedly this one isn't really up to debate mario odyssey not only has a deep and rich move pool but it's also much smoother than 3d world on top of your usual jumps and such you can throw your hat bounce off it and get an additional jump cappy is capable of being thrown forward in the air held in place or spun around when jumping mario has a lot of control in the air and is able to turn around fairly easily but it doesn't happen instantly there's a tiny bit of delay which gives the player enough time to make a quick adjustment but not so much that it's overwhelming if you need to make faster turns in the air that's what cappy and diving is for now diving is a weird mechanic in this game for some reason it's gotten nerfed more and more in every 3d mario in mario 64 and sunshine your dives would soar in the air and can be combined with triple jumps to provide extra distance and height depending on how it's done in odyssey the dive requires two button presses and while it's used in tandem with jumping it doesn't provide extra height or distance and in bowser's fury it's even worse but we'll get to that in a bit my only complaint is how easily mario can bonk after long jumping in mario 64 you can long jump and if timed right wall jump off the wall mastering the timing makes this type of movement extremely gratifying but in odyssey you'll bonk every single time losing any sense of speed you may have had i do have to bring up the motion controls as well it's not that they're bad to have but the fact that shaking your controller to roll faster than using a button is objectively a problem you should never limit the player to using motion controls to be more effective than button presses either make motion controls as effective as buttons or don't include them at all but what about bowser's fury move set does this game control just as well or is it lacking well a lot of the move pool carries over for mario 3d world and odyssey combined just about everything is the same including poking into walls when you long jump into one the big changes are the lack of throwing cappy and lack of motion controls in bowser's fury you can still jump and dive in a different direction but the dive isn't quite as efficient as bouncing off cappy speaking up the dive it's almost non-existent mario hardly lunges forward but instead dips down quickly the only real use i found for the dive is when you want to fall a great height without taking damage and without stopping in place so in that aspect odyssey's controls are better but on the flip side there's no motion controls kind of in order to guide bowser jr to a specific spot you'll push r to reveal a cursor then a whole r to send him somewhere this is great for taking out enemies or collecting cash shards and coins that is if bowser jr decides to listen in this instance the motion controls make sense since you're using the gyroscope and it comes much more naturally than using a second joystick to move it mario is also able to run slightly faster if you run for long enough which in odyssey can't really be done unless you constantly roll the extra speed makes the movement harder to control but it's not so fast that it can't be done without precision it's interesting to note that the roll is also nerfed when mario rolls once he kind of stops in place instead of continuing to build speed so in general odyssey's move set is more diverse you can utilize cappy in several different ways and you have a lot more options at your disposal but this is where things get messy mario's move set in bowser's theory is greatly enhanced when he gets access to power-ups in bowser's fury you're able to hold up the five items each of the cat bell mushroom boomerang flower fire flower tanooki suit and lucky bell this enhances the game to such a high degree that i'd argue it gives mario a more diverse move set than even odyssey because think about this at any given point in time you're gonna have at least a handful of power-ups sitting in your inventory if you need to climb a wall you can switch to a cat bell in like two seconds if you want to float just switch to the tanooki leaf or maybe you want some help defeating enemies just switch to the fire boomerang flower in most mario games the most items you can hold is one so the fact you can have all of this at your disposal at any point in time adds a massive layer of depth to mario's moveset does mario technically possess these extra abilities himself no of course not but you might as well say that he does when he can so easily swap between power-ups this is where odyssey is lacking a bit now yes the fact that you could possess up to 50 different things and animals is great fun but let's be honest how useful are these so-called power-ups mario could turn into a cactus and hop around neat or you could turn into a goomba well goombas don't even have arms they're only used to get a handful of moons in each kingdom and look that's not to say that some of the characters aren't useful because some of them are incredibly versatile and just flat out fun i mean you could turn into a freaking t-rex as an example or you can glide around with glidon the frogs let you jump really high which is nice sherm turns you into a tank and cheap jeeps help you swim faster but mario odyssey's captures in general have two main flaws first and foremost you can't access every power-up whenever you want i know it's like this for most mario games and it doesn't really make sense to be like that in mario odyssey but we are making a comparison to bowser's fury the t-rex is only in a couple levels and same with glidon those are a few of these standout power ups and secondly the other captures like hammer bro chain chop or bullet bill are only useful in very specific circumstances the chain chomp and bullet bill are really only good to break barriers or cover some distance while the hammer broke gives you janky movement if you really analyze the captures of mario odyssey most of them have one use and it's very limiting in a way some of these could be considered as anti-power-ups since you lose something instead of being enhanced bowser's fury on the other hand has dozens upon dozens of reasons to use each of their power-ups there's lots of enemies to throw fireballs at tons of walls to clan and plenty of faraway jumps to float across are any of bowser's fury captures as flashy as turning into a t-rex or bowser obviously not but gameplay-wise they aren't very functional they have one or two purposes and that's it bowser's fury has only a few power-ups but can be utilized in a multitude of different ways now if you don't care about the versatility and power-ups and just like the charm of them you'll probably prefer odyssey's system with odyssey the fun is discovering what you can capture and that is a very powerful experience that most other games can't replicate but those mystical feelings only last for so long i mean hell odyssey speedrunners have managed to beat the game with only three of the 50 captures power-ups aren't everything but they sure can spice up the game therein so if i had to pick bowser's fury wind in this category [Music] now we're getting into the really subjective parts of the game mario odyssey and bowser's fury from the outside may look similar in design but when you're actually playing they're the complete opposites odyssey's levels are meant to be explored and comb through slowly it's a completely open world for the most part and the platforming isn't really challenging even in the late game the fun is discovering what's out there and you're rewarded with power moons for doing so some of my favorite parts is finding all the hidden coins from going to obscure parts of the game the coins don't really mean much but the developers still put them in there as an act of encouragement and reward for reaching these places depending on what kind of platformers you like this may be exactly what you're looking for and on top of that there are still several mini levels that are linear for those that like that usually you'll go down a pipe or take a rocket to get to those so mario odyssey tried to find a balance of open world and linear levels for players that like both now for bowser's fury well it's more like 3d world where the levels are mostly linear if i'm being honest bowser's fury is basically just like making 12 new levels in mario 3d world putting them all in one place and adding water in between them once you find enough cat shines you can access all the levels in any order you want so while there is somewhat of a path to follow you can also complete a lot of the shines in whatever order you'd like in terms of what the power moons or cat shines are this is where both games start to look the same and that's not exactly a good thing so when you grab a power moon or a cat shine you aren't kicked out of a level and instead just continue forward this is fantastic because it keeps the pace moving you don't take a break from playing unless you actually need to but what are the missions exactly well since mario odyssey has literally hundreds of power moons to find a lot of them repeat themselves over and over and over again in every kingdom you have to talk to peach in the post game find captain toad look for a taxi in the sky find the location of some hint art etc etc etc mission repetition has been an issue with 3d mario games since the very beginning to be honest and it really shows its flaws here at first though it wasn't that big a deal the game is fun and the most important part of a 3d platformer is clean movement and fun platforming but when you make a game with platforming that isn't challenging and you also make the post game excessively long it creates a very dragged out feeling once you've explored all the kingdoms but still need a couple hundred moons to finish the game it's really easy to lose motivation in bowser's fury is only slightly better in that regard the amount of cat shards bowser blocks and blue coin missions you'll do for such a small game is honestly a little disappointing but at the very least the platforming requires more skill and precision so even if a lot of the missions are very samey i'm still having a lot of fun jumping around because i'm being challenged that doesn't necessarily mean bowser's fury is super difficult but it's more than just walking around and occasionally performing a few jumps here and there the only exception in mario odyssey is new donk city because that entire kingdom is like a massive playground it's my favorite level to come back to because there's so many buildings you can climb up and jump from if more of odyssey's kingdoms were like new donk city that would have made the game a lot more interesting in the long run and yes the linear levels in odyssey do offer more substance in terms of platforming but those are single levels not inside the kingdom that's where bowser's fury truly shines is finding a way to mesh together a bunch of levels into one world the way progression works in both of these games is technically the same but the structure is completely different when you enter a kingdom in mario odyssey you are not allowed to get all the moons on the first go you can get a lot of them but you have to beat the game and break this grey block to unlock the rest to be honest i'm not really sure why the game does this my two theories are that it's to extend the play time or to avoid overwhelming the player if this great block is meant to extend the play time then that really sucks for those that like to collect everything right away donkey kong 64 is the worst case example where you need all five kongs to 100 the game and you basically have to play the levels five times over and honestly it's not quite that extreme but i can see how annoying it would be to have to go back through the other theory is to prevent someone from being too overwhelmed with moons otherwise known as netflix syndrome where there's so many options that you have no idea what you want to do first that i can understand and even relate with but an easy solution would be to not include as many moons in the game another plausible theory for this would be to prevent people from breaking the game's pacing so say if you collected all the moons in three or four of the kingdoms you'd probably have enough to reach the end of the game while barely exploring the other half of the kingdoms and if that was a problem when play testing then once again the solution is to include less moons and it's not even just the moons there's some physical areas that can't be accessed until you have a certain amount of moons personally that's what bothers me the most does this make the game bad not really but the large quantity of moons dampens the overall progression interestingly bowser's fury functions virtually the same way but it hardly matters compared to the hundreds and hundreds of moons you only need 50 cat shines to face off against the final boss and 100 to fully complete the game and you don't have access to every cat shine right away either the only reason that works so well is because the progression of the game is so much smoother if you complete a couple of cat shines on an island right next to you is another island with a couple more to do when you return to a previous island you'll have another mission unlocked since the islands are so small and it all happens in real time there's no pacing issues and you're better incentivized to revisit these locations this process is so natural because the islands are fairly close together and easy to reach and there's no hassle of going back to a ship and inserting some moons to fly somewhere else and what's even better is plessy single-handedly makes bowser's fury one of the most fun ways to progress through a 3d platformer i haven't even brought up plessy yet because of how integral she is to the entire system if an island is further away just hop onto plessy at any time and ride towards it and plus he will spawn pretty much anywhere you don't have to go to a specific place she just kind of shows up when you're in a body of water she moves really fast and can even boost through the air all while playing an addicting uplifting beat plessy is hardly limited since she could ride around on land just as easily as the water and you might be thinking well what if riding across the water gets boring the developers thought about that there are dozens of cat shines that require you to grab a fast-moving bunny complete an obstacle course or grab medals in succession the game gives you something fun to do even in situations that would normally be dull the missions do repeat themselves too much that's for sure but you're never really sailing through the water with nothing to do for very long the only issue i have with the progression in bowser's fury is bowser himself he spawns into the game at certain times and the more shines you have the more often you'll have to fight him while this is a refreshing change of pace it does get a tad bit annoying by the end of the game i do wish there was some way to control when fury bowser would come out of his goo hole but at the same time there is some fun to be had with changing your strategies and playing on the fly and yes you can spawn fury bowser with a bowser amiibo but not everyone has those it's not really a deal breaker or anything but it does get a bit intrusive by the end i'll also mention that both games have fast travel in odyssey hitting a checkpoint gives you access to travel there quickly while in bowser's fury you simply just have to reach the island since bowser's fury is a smaller game the load times are much faster which again helps with the overall pacing most mario games have some semblance of replayability the initial experience is usually so memorable and powerful that you'll want to come back to it one day and that's how i felt with mario odyssey i'm currently working on my second playthrough and it was fun for a while and i used the words a while in quotations i loved going back to the worlds checking everything out again and having a better idea of where the moons were that aspect was really fun up until i beat the final boss after that i started working on the post game moons and that's when the game goes through weird phases i'll go back to like casket kingdom as an example look around and find all the moons that i can get only to realize that i missed some of them and i hadn't even hit the grey blocks yet which spawns even more moons the post game makes you satisfied especially on your first playthrough but it also becomes a turn off that's how the cycle goes by this point i get tired of the kingdom and just go to another one instead and a lot of these moons just aren't fun to do more than once the hint art is boring once you figure out the puzzle talking to peach captain toad and toadette is all the same thing just mash it and get to the moon that's all you do and then there's waiting for the seeds to grow which is just really obnoxious but at least you don't have to wait technically it'll grow when it's not even spawned in bowser's fury on the other hand is nothing like that yes the missions themselves can be repetitive but because of the supreme pacing and fun platforming you don't really think about that the cat signs themselves don't feel like filler because everything is so tightly condensed with a purpose there are so many moons and odyssey that you'll find in completely random spots but that doesn't happen in bowser's fury if there's a big body of water you'll have a couple of plussy cat shines to do and like i said earlier odyssey is really meant to be thoroughly explored and there is nothing wrong with that but when it comes to replayability the excitement of finding new areas is lost when you've already done so before i'll briefly cover the bosses since mario games always make them really easy odyssey obviously wins in this category is simply because it's a bigger scaled game you've got the four brutals which are kind of like koopalings but with different attack patterns but everything else is vastly different from one another you'll go from fighting madame brood and her golden chomp to slaying a massive dragon to cooling off mollusca lancier and his big cranium the throwing fists with knuckleotech these bosses aren't very difficult but they don't need to be they've got really fun designs and character plus the fights are all really unique amongst one another and then there's bowser's fury which can't even compete i mean yeah fighting fury bowser is kind of interesting you turn into goku mario and have to swipe or ground pound him but when you boil it down the fight is really similar to boom boom or pom pom but on a bigger scale and fury bowser has more attacks it is fun don't get me wrong but it's nothing overly impressive especially since you have to do the same fight quite a few times throughout the game besides him though there really isn't much beyond what you would find in mario 3d world the cap bully is a nice return but there's no histocrat or motley boss blop to be seen and i almost feel like that was done on purpose if bowser's fury had histocrat that would risk overshadowing the fury bowser fights that's probably why we mostly have a bunch of mid bosses [Music] and finally we have the music this topic i have the least to speak on because my preference is gonna change based on the type of day i'm having in my mood mario odyssey and bowser's fury both create pieces that fit with the theme of the level fossil falls comes out slamming brimmed with a sense of discovery and wonder of the new world but blaine is more relaxed in tone and much softer with eloquent and breathy instrumentation then new donk city is chipper and uptight you can almost smell the coffee as you roam at streets and all of mario odyssey's music is like this it's quite the departure from the more basic and happy sounds but mario galaxy was a departure as well and well now it's i don't know one of the most beloved nintendo soundtracks of all time and bowser's fury is no different skate for shores has this perky i woke up on saturday morning with breakfast in bed kind of experience then the bowser fights have intense metal with whaling guitars and drums intensifying the sheer scope and brevity of bowser fort flaptrap and tricketty tower in case the more classic mario sounds which fits because these islands feature a lot of classic mario elements like bullies flipping platforms and spike so either way you put it the osts are fantastic for both games well i finally got that off my chest neither of these games are bad obviously but i do feel as though bowser's fury takes the cake from a gameplay perspective i'd really like to see which of the two games you prefer in the comments but that's all my thoughts and a big thank you for watching all the way through i'll see you guys in the next one and i hope you have a wonderful day until next time [Music]
