visitors who are joining us here at the cathedral on this last sunday this eighth sunday of ordinary time before we begin lent and our readings prepare us for ash wednesday the second reading from saint paul talks about mortality and immortality that we come in contact with our mortality every day and immortality because we know that jesus christ like us who when we die he has experienced that also has defeated death we acknowledge our sins we prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god all the angels may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life have mercy [Music] on [Music] lord have mercy [Music] [Applause] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory oh lord peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever the readings can be found in the liturgy guide of the bulletin a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the huss appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of the of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord [Music] lord it is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you lord it is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you [Music] it is good to give thanks to the lord to make music to your name [Music] to proclaim your loving mercy in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night [Music] lord it is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you i just will flourish like the palm trees [Music] planted in the the lord they will flourish in the courts of our god lord it is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you still bearing fruit when they are old still full of sap still green to proclaim that the lord is upright in him my rock there is no wrong [Music] lord it is good to give thanks to you give thanks to you a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself in incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord hallelujah oh [Music] as you hold on to the word of life the lord be with you [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of the store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord [Music] i want to begin with the poem the author is unknown and goes like this i dreamt death came the other night and heaven's gate swung wide with kindly grace and angel came and ushered me inside and there to my astonishment stood folks i'd known on earth some i had judged most unfit and others i judged of little worth indignant words rose to my lips but never were set free for everyone showed stunned surprise no one expected me the readings for this last sunday before we move into lent are full of aphorisms an aphorism is an adage or a tersely phrase statement of truth so for example jesus uses an aphorism when he says why do you notice a splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own we may be surprised who we find in heaven with us that is if we ourselves are blessed enough to find ourselves in heaven how much more constructive the world would be if we would concentrate more on our own faults rather than on the faults of others finding the leaves fall with our neighbor can lead to a false judgment as jesus says in the gospel today and false judgment can lead to friction acrimony antagonism hostility and as we are seen played out on the world stage even war not to psychoanalyze but we can tend to project frustration over our own failings and unto the failings of other people meaning we pounce on another person's fault as a way of hiding our own thus the lord is quite wise with that pithy saying of wood and splinter it's evident he knows our human deficiencies first deal with your own faults is the moral of the story when we get angry perhaps our anger may even be righteous we have to take a step back and consider what we do that irritates and frustrates others and even more what are we mired in that makes us irritated with ourselves is sin the culprit sin certainly looks good when it presents itself as a pleasant way out but the after effects of sin leave us less than thrilled with ourselves as we know a good tree does not bear rotten fruit says jesus any more than a rotten tree bears good fruit every tree is known by its fruit when we love when it's hardest to love when we reach out to someone in need at a time when it's inconvenient for us when we persevere in faith during times of hardship and despair we are bearing good fruit the fruit reveals the person as jesus says the same way it's not enough for us to say we are saved and then conform ourselves to the constructs of this world in fact it's not even enough to even say we are saved what we need to say is that we are being saved redeemed already by christ on the cross but not yet saved saint paul says in philippians chapter 2 verse 12 work out your fear with salvation work out your salvation excuse me work out your salvation with fear and trembling those are deliberate and challenging words and they begin by taking the wooden beam out of our eye certainly we depend upon the mercy of god but we have to respond to this mercy by doing our best to live the christian life our actions must reflect what we say they must reflect what we believe as jesus says can a blind person guide a blind person will they not both fall into a pit there's so much out there claims to be the truth and yet so much of it is blind it is false the philosophies of the world chant this same mantra over and over again it's just repackaged christianity is just not compatible with the modern world that's the basic mantra do you think the ukrainians are saying that right now that faith belief or old fashion as catholics we are blessed with the teaching authority to guide us to the truth and this authority is often given the latin word for teacher called the magisterium the magisterium consists in the authority of the pope and the bishops as successors of the apostles but more importantly it consists of a teaching a doctrine that cannot be compromised and the duty of the magisterium is to set the course for us to be able to relate our faith and morals to the evolving times perhaps we take this for granted because most of us have always been catholic and the voice of the catechism presented to us in a neat and understandable way but dogmatic statements just didn't happen they evolved over time as the church continued to grow in its understanding of itself in relation to christ's teaching and commands but also in this realization of the essence of the human person why did god create us what is our purpose the magisterium does not just exist among the hierarchy it also exists in the sacramental life it exists in us those of us who have received the sacrament of confirmation have received the gift of the holy spirit to grow in our understanding of the church and her teaching when as all human beings we have times of doubt or times that we have difficulty understanding what we believe or why we believe we can go to the scriptures we can go to the catechism of the catholic church we can go to the original sources those church fathers who wrote so much about what we hold today as truth and belief there's nothing wrong with that we should do that but we also have to go to our knees we have to go to our knees and pray to the holy spirit to help us embrace what we believe but may not understand fully the blind cannot lead the blind and that is why we've been gifted with the holy spirit that is why we've been gifted my brothers and sisters with the one holy catholic and apostolic church to lead us she is not blind the professional faith can be found in the liturgy guide of the bulletin together we profess i believe in one [Music] lord god christ the only begotten son of god of the father before all ages god from god light from the light true god of the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate by the virgin mary and became men our savior was crucified under pontius pilate suffered death and was buried rose again on the third day in accordance with the scripture he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end and believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds the father of the son but the father and the son is adored and glorified was spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess what baptism for the forgiveness of sin i look forward to the resurrection of the dead life of the world amen the lord always hears the prayers of sincere of a sincere and grateful heart with confidence then we ask for these needs that god will increase the faith and charity of his people so that the church around the world will bear good fruit we pray to the lord [Music] that the leaders of our nation may be given the gifts of wisdom courage and insight during these challenging times at home and abroad we pray to the lord for an end to the war in ukraine that sensible and rational rational minds may prevail in order to bring about negotiable resolution we pray to the lord for the people of ukraine that they may continue to be strong in their resolve and that civilians may find shelter and refuge through our relief efforts and the relief efforts of neighboring countries we pray to the lord [Music] for those who risked their lives to protect us here at home and in the military that they will be strengthened and rewarded for their self-sacrifice we pray to the lord [Music] that our catholic family sharing appeal which begins this weekend may be successful in our parish and throughout the diocese so that we may provide for the vital ministries that make us a catholic family we pray to the lord [Music] for our parish and families that we will continue to grow in holiness and bear good fruit for the kingdom we pray to the lord [Music] make us steadfast and strong always devoted to good works for your sake that we might bear good fruit for the kingdom hear our prayers and grant them as we pray through christ our lord amen [Music] [Music] hey [Music] lay down thy weary i came to jesus as i was [Music] me i thirsty came to jesus [Music] of jesus [Music] and i found in [Music] till [Music] sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merits reward through christ our lord the lord be with you [Music] lift up your hearts [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for we know it belongs to your boundless glory that you came to the aid of mortal beings with your divinity and even fashioned for us a remedy out of mortality itself that the cause of our downfall might become the means of our salvation through christ our lord through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever may our voices we pray join with theirs in one course of exalted praise as we acclaim [Music] your glory [Music] oh [Music] eucharistic prayer number three prayer number three if you desire to follow along you can find it on page 67 in the hymnal you are indeed holy o lord and all you've created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on
