[Music] must find it [Music] [Music] [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit my sisters and brothers let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned against you show us o lord your mercy and grant us your salvation may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen together we praise god as we say glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord thanks be to god lord it is good to give thanks to you lord it is good to give thanks to you it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night lord it is good to give thanks to you the just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow they that are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish in the courts of our god lord it is good to give thanks to you they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and sturdy shall they be declaring how just is the lord my rock in whom there is no wrong lord it is good to give thanks to you a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord thanks be to god the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ jesus cautions us not to judge others he puts forth the principle that since we all have faults we have no right to judge other people because they have faults a prominent feature in various 12-step recovery programs is the shared admission of weakness each participant is encouraged to take the first step toward reform toward healing admitting that they have some difficulty some weakness some addiction and that they need help to bring it under control each person is encouraged by all the others to stay in control of their weakness or addiction for many of us our specific weakness is less obvious than addiction however we may find it even more difficult to admit to our weakness even to ourselves instead we work hard to give the impression that we are just fine that we have no need for com the compassion the help the encouragement and the prayers of others all that said there are some people who are responsible for guiding and encouraging and sometimes even correcting others parents have the obligation to show their children both by word and by example how to lead a good and faithful life the gospel reminds us that even when we do have the responsibility of guiding others we must remove the metaphorical wooden beam out of our own eye to be able to help others without judgment to take the splinter out of their eye we shouldn't even think about guiding others until we have a good sense of values and how to live them out for ourselves we must be well informed but also be committed to correcting our own faults foibles and weaknesses any teacher will tell you that you only begin to truly learn something when you try to teach it to others excuse me every parent will tell you that because they need to teach their children how to live according to good values they must first be living them out in their own lives or at least working very hard to live them out jesus strongly warns us not to be self-righteous while god's law is extremely important simply following the letter of the law isn't enough god searches the heart and we need to do the right thing in life not simply by following the rules but by doing them from our hearts the principle from which god's loss brings forth must be the core not only of our words and actions but our intentions as well as an example look at the fasting and abstinence from meat that we are asked to perform this coming ash wednesday on good friday on the fridays of lent and at other times throughout the liturgical year why do we do it well our religious tradition can point to at least seven reasons for fasting and abstinence first from the beginning god commanded some fasting i.e not eating the fruit of the tree in the garden of eden and sin entered into the world because adam and eve broke that fast secondly for the christians fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin third fasting reveals our dependence on god and not the resources of the world fourth fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the eucharist the truest of foods fifth fasting is preparation for baptism and all the sacraments for the reception of grace sixth fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor and finally fasting is a means of self-discipline chastity and the restraining of appetites so on these days a person might follow all the prescriptions of the law that is eating two small meals and one larger meal without meat but let's say that larger meal is an expensive and lavish lobster dinner one must ask if the following of the law is anything beyond adherence to only the letter of the law while ignoring the principles behind the law doing it out of obligation rather than from the heart and with a sincere desire for spiritual growth jesus calls us to practice a healthy self-criticism and to be aware of what lies in our hearts and in our motivations to do that we must turn to god from the deepest recesses of our hearts and souls to recognize and acknowledge both the good and the bad that dwell therein and to seek his help in making pure our inmost intentions may king david's prayer become our prayer each day lord create in me a pure heart put a steadfast spirit within me and together we profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen my sisters and brothers we gather to celebrate the mystery of our salvation in jesus christ let us ask god our father to open for all the world this fountain of life and blessing for all who have dedicated themselves to god that he will help them to be faithful to their promises we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace among nations that god may rid the world of violence and let us serve him in freedom we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity that we will sustain them by our love we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us that god will teach us to use wisely the good things he has given us that they will lead us closer to him and to the eternal blessings he promises we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for health and blessings for john mchugh for whom this mass has offered we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who have died and gone before us in the faith of christ that they may enjoy the peace of god's kingdom we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for all those intentions we now offer from the silence of our hearts for these we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father we ask you to hear the prayers of your people give us what you have inspired us to ask of you in faith we make our prayer through christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray sisters and brothers and my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church o god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord his death we celebrate in love his resurrection we confess with living faith and his coming in glory we await with unwavering hope and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and william our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Laughter] amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who
