hi father paul here at the sunday mass and i want to thank you for tuning in today to celebrate and to pray with us but before we begin our celebration i just want to touch on a little issue or problem that we've been having perhaps in recent weeks and months as you've joined us on youtube or on our website you've seen little ads pop up during the mass first of all i want to personally apologize for this disruption and let you know that this is not of our doing we don't monetize our channel so we receive nothing for those ads but it seems youtube in their policies still continue uh to put ads periodically on the content that we produce we are working very hard to solve this problem and hopefully at some point in the near future at least on our website you'll be able to watch the mass ad-free if you do watch us on the youtube channel and have not already subscribed please hit the subscribe button and become part of the sunday mass faith community on youtube [Music] again thank you for your time let us begin our celebration [Music] this day god gives me strength [Music] flame in my heart [Applause] flashing of lightning windedness [Music] welcome everyone to our celebration of the sunday mass and ministry of the passionist community it is february 27th the eighth sunday of ordinary time so let us be a community of faith gathered and united as always by the sign of our faith in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be with all of you and with your spirit and as we come together today to celebrate the gift of sunday to be nourished by word and eucharist let us first pause and prepare our hearts as we always do by asking god's forgiveness lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to the gift of everlasting life glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen and let us pray grant us so lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] lord it is good lord it is good to give thanks to you [Music] lord it is good lord it is good to give thanks to you it is good to give thanks to the lord to make music to your name almost high to proclaim your loving mercy in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night [Music] lord it is good lord it is good to give thanks to you [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptible closes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal closes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where or death is your sting this thing of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] lord be with you with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple was superior to his teacher but when fully trained every disciple will take will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove the splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly and remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of the store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ you know as we've journeyed through these first seven weeks of ordinary time i sense or i've reflected on the fact that that the readings are sort of trying to to start to mold us as people of faith you know we go back maybe to uh one of the first couple of sundays of ordinary time and we we saw jesus enter into his public ministry and begin to gather his disciples and then in recent weeks we we've heard luke's part of luke's version of the sermon on the plane we've heard challenges of loving our enemies and praying for those who who hurt us and today we we sort of have an odd little group of sayings by jesus we we might say that they're sort of like wisdom sayings things that are sort of practical questions that are answerable very quickly you know like if about do two blind people guide each other if they do they're apt to fall into a pit though sometimes i think today with all of the technology we have maybe blind people can guide blind people and not fall into that but certainly during jesus time that was not a possibility but i i get at the sense of our readings today that that jesus is trying to to to challenge us to think of what how we act out of what sort of store of of wisdom of knowledge of understanding of grace of experience of life do we operate out of and the essence of it is if we want to be a good person we want to be a faith-filled person if we want to be a disciple then we have to somehow form that what that storehouse of what we have into goodness and i i would guess there's many ways to do that but i i'll just give you one from my own experience of life you see me in this great bright green vestment today and i don't often wear this vestment it was made for me when i was ordained a priest by a friend but but sometimes when i feel myself down sometimes when i'm readying myself to celebrate the eucharist and i sense i'm not in a good space i sometimes put this vestment on because it reminds me of goodness it reminds me of a relationship it reminds me of a friendship it reminds me of the presence of god in my life and my hope is that it sort of propels me forth to be a good celebrant of the eucharist at that moment and hopefully maybe changes the the darkness that's sitting over me because of struggles and difficulties and problems and and the challenges of the world to always see goodness first to always act out of that goodness to to speak out of that goodness to live out of that goodness now i have to say i'm not perfect at it and i have my bad days and my struggles and oftentimes you folks point them out to me uh after you view or celebrate the sunday mass with us and it makes me pause and think and it makes me find something good in what you have to say so that i can move forward so that i can produce good fruit so that i can be the person of faith that god has called me to be saint paul calls us to be firm steadfast and always devoted to the work of the lord knowing this we place our prayers before our gracious lord today our response is lord hear our prayer we pray that as we ready ourselves to begin the lenten season we will stand firm steadfast and always be devoted to the lord's work of forgiveness mercy and peace we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray that our merciful and loving god will always watch over us guide us care for us and love us we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the intentions of our benefactors the intentions of our sunday maths faith community that will be placed next to the altar and for the hansberry the atchiari the glendor and the malinsky families all of whom we remember in a special way at this mass we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of all goodness you always provide us with what we need hear our prayers today and respond to them out of your abundant love through christ our lord [Music] amen love let haven't adore him god is love rejoice [Music] god [Music] god who breathes through all creation god is love eternal love [Music] brothers and sisters pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at our hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all this holy church oh god who provides gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merits reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord and let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you laid the foundations of the world and arranged the changing of times and seasons you formed us in your own image and set us over the whole world in all its wonder to rule in your name over all that you have made and forever to praise you for your mighty works through christ and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time that jesus was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it but this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and robert our bishop and all whom you call to the ministry and service of your church remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we humbly pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are you yours now and forever and lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but look on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer that to one another lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed long before my journey start when in my youth i searched in my heart i would pray for my goal and my stars [Music] when in despair my soul raised a cry i was saved by her gaze led in her [Music] the light of my days [Music] of my days [Music] and let us pray nourished by your saving gifts we beseech you your mercy lord that by the same sacrament with which you feed us in the present age you may make us partakers of eternal life through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit and may our good and gracious god bless us this day and always father son and holy spirit amen our mass has ended let us go forth and proclaim the gospel with our life thanks be to god and thanks to all of you for joining us today for our celebration of the sunday mass a special thanks to joe and tamika and to preston and to father michael and to renald for leading us and helping us to pray and celebrate today well this week we stand in front of the door and we knock to enter into the season of lent wednesday is ash wednesday so get ready celebrate maybe a little bit on tuesday but get ready to enter the long season of lent and as i would say don't always look for the bad in lent yes it's a time of repentance it's a time to seek forgiveness but also look for the good in yourself our world often talks about the bad look for the good so until we meet again next sunday as we celebrate the first sunday of lent may the passion of jesus christ be always in your heart those who love and those who labor follow in the way of christ thus the first disciples found him thus the gift of love sufficed jesus says to those who seek him i will never pass you raise the stone and you shall
