like you and from a grant from the catholic community foundation for eastern south dakota which raises manages and distributes god's gifts to donor-directed ministries [Music] is foreign [Music] is is [Music] foreign [Music] is is is [Music] boys [Music] is the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you my dear brothers and sisters god's love is so great for us that he wants to fill all of us with his own love so that we might even be able to love our enemies which we will hear in the gospel today of the call to love our enemies so as we enter into this mass knowing that we need god's grace and help let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my faults through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] so [Music] on [Music] please we give you oh um [Music] mercy on us foreign is [Music] let us pray grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever now a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abishai went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abhishai whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let him let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abhishei do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner some son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] is [Music] is [Music] the is is [Music] is [Music] it is the lord who forgives all your sins who heals everyone who redeems your life from the grave who crowns you with mercy [Music] is [Music] the lord is compassionate and gracious slow to anger and rich in mercy he does not treat us according to our sins nor repeat us according to our faults [Music] is [Music] as far as these days from the west so far from us does he remove our transgressions [Music] lord's compassion is [Music] is a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord so [Music] oh [Music] my god [Music] i give you a new commandment [Music] love one another [Laughter] [Music] the lord be with you [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke [Music] jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistrust you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and for the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those for whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven the gospel of the lord [Music] i don't know about you but this gospel challenges me to the core how is it that we are to love as god loves which is unconditionally to forgive those who've offended us to be merciful to be forgiving when we as human beings because of original sin have all kinds of disordered thoughts and we can easily give into passions like anger discouragement frustration in patience how is it that we find something difficult and especially if someone has hurt us in some way that we can be loving as we are called to be well by ourselves of course we know that we are greatly greatly limited in fact we cannot love with charity unless we first receive charity charity is that pure gift from god which seeks the good of the other and enables us to do the types of things that we heard in the gospel today that enables us to rise above our thoughts our words and our actions that sometimes are contrary to the call of love and we live in a world today that's filled with so much negativity and think of how that negativity can impact us to ourselves have negative thoughts perhaps stumble at times to speak uncharitably towards others not with love and kindness even in correction but rather judgmental thoughts and yet we're told to not judge others how is it that we are to love in such a profound way when we are so human by god's grace by the acknowledgement that all of us are limited we're weak but god's loving mercy is always with us and as we draw closer to him we become more dependent upon him it enables us to structure our thoughts to catch our tongue or what we might put on a chat or an email or a text to be very very guarded in our thoughts our words and our actions we have today of course this story of david and saul and we see what happened to saul he was overcome by the temptations of the evil one he was harboring jealousy in his heart because david was becoming so popular he was so successful in the military endeavors and the women at the time were acknowledging him that he was even greater saul was the one that was in charge and here's this rising star how do you deal with the rising star you try to eliminate them and that was saul's strategy because he harbored these things he spoke against david and then he acted upon david intentionally wanting to kill him how is it that david having experienced that so acutely having to flee for his life having even been under that threat and the actual experience of an action to kill him but by the grace of god avoiding it when he has the opportunity to thrust or to have somebody else thrust the spear and the one who was to kill him how is it possible because david knew that saul was god's anointed and when we regard every human being as one created by god even if they have malicious intent how do we love them [Music] we know that there are people in the world in the history of the world who have been very malicious in their tent and have acted inappropriately in thought in word and in action we could use the example of course of hitler well those kind of people because they're not open to conversion they need to be managed so that more harm it doesn't come upon other people as our dear beloved brothers and sisters who were so tormented persecuted and killed in the unfortunate holocaust of course we need to manage those people but what do we do with the people in the world today that are trying to take over or afraid and so they're trying to take actions to minimize others what do we do with all this negative speech spread throughout the world when in america we have freedom of speech just because we have freedom of speech does not mean that the christian should speak uncharitably rather we are called to a higher standard to correct those who are airing but always with charity but it's so very important that we don't become overcome by the negativity that we shut the negative news off yes we need to know what's going on in the world yes we need to pray for conversion we need to try to correct people and we need to speak positively in a world where there's so much negativity and so our homework for this week if i might so humbly offer is that we focus on the positive qualities that we see in others and we take the time to acknowledge them we call to mind those who are maybe using the speech inappropriately the thoughts the actions and that we might be like david we might humbly turn to god and ask for the grace to forgive those who have hurt us those who are harming the church intentionally maybe even maliciously we pray for their conversion but we step forward in charity and we become ambassadors of love in the world so that people see in us what they see in christ one who loves so much who is willing to lay down his life in love and to pray for the conversion to forgive others and to call them to proper correction god will do it in us but if we keep allowing ourselves to become over flood with the negativity in so much media in the world today it will overwhelm us and it will only create a greater disturbance interiorly which is exactly what the evil one wants and that is not of god the measuring stick for greatness in heaven is charity [Music] not freedom of speech used inappropriately not malicious thoughts or actions but humbly turning to god and asking god for the grace to rise above those things and to unite as brothers and sisters in christ be an ambassador of all that is good true and just certainly to name objectively wrong things and whatever our place in life is and our families our home our role in society in the world our communities to speak with charity humility and truth but such that it would attract the other to realize i was wrong and if we continue to read the rest of the gospel or not the gospel the first reading today from the book of samuel we will discover what impact that had on saul and let's pray for that grace throughout the world god's unconditional love and our great need for him we now place before him with great confidence of god's desire to help us these prayers petitioned i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he incited into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father and the son he is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen now we acknowledge our god's great love for us and our need for him so we place before him these prayers of petition for the preaching and teaching of the church that through the proclamation of goss of the gospel god's will shall be done in all things we pray to the lord for peace in our country and peace in our world that leaders of nations would respect the dignity of human life we pray to the lord for those in need especially the sick and the dying the lonely and the grieving the persecuted and the marginalized the addicted and the incarcerated that they may find comfort and hope in the love of christ we pray to the lord r that families may grow in holiness by reaching out to each other through mutual love and forgiveness we pray to the lord for our catholic family sharing appeal which begins next weekend may be successful in our parish and throughout the diocese so that we might provide the many ministries that help us grow in the faith we pray to the lord [Music] for the spiritual and material needs of our parish that god would bless our endeavors in plans for the sake of giving him greater glory we pray to the lord r for the faithful departed that the beatific vision will be theirs as they we celebrate this mass we pray to the lord heavenly father in your good and gracious love we ask that you provide all that we need so that we can be your loving disciples and to allow your love to flow through us back to you and to others and to love ourselves as you love us through christ our lord [Music] i [Music] season is [Music] is [Music] with [Music] is [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] the [Music] so [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] as we celebrate your mysteries oh lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sang the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim [Music] foreign [Music] oh is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and the working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which we poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] god therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church in recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints in whose constant intercession your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our
