[Music] is [Music] is in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit the gospel today is a reminder that we are to call the best out of each other and in this very difficult time the world faces with war and calamity facing so many people especially in europe we ask the lord to in this eucharist to call the good out of each one of us so that we will have peace in the world let us begin that peace by asking god forgiveness and having reconciliation in our hearts you are son of god and son of mary lord have mercy lord have mercy your word made flesh and splendor the father christ have mercy christ have mercy you are our hope and our salvation lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us all of our sins and bring us to life everlasting amen [Music] [Applause] we my lord jesus mercy on us for you jesus let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's fault when one speaks at the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord [Music] to give thanks [Music] is it is good to give thanks to the lord to make music to your name proclaim your loving mercy in my mourning and your truth in the watches of thy love is [Music] i just will flourish like thy palm trees [Music] they will flourish in the courts of our god [Music] to give thanks [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] like bright stars [Music] life [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice this splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove the splinter from your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord it's very clear that this reading today from the gospel is aimed at those who are in position of influencing informing others whether they be a teacher a parent or a pastor and so it's an opportunity for all of us who have those responsibilities in society and in life to take this gospel seriously and there are three images that the lord uses first of all that beam that wooden beam and an eye but also the tree and then there's the splinter and it's not surprising i guess that jesus would use these images of wood after all he is a carpenter's son he uses things that are somewhat known and natural to him and so there is that beam that is in our eye it's it's an understanding for us to see that whenever we take charge of forming others we have to make sure that our own house is in order as well and that we don't maybe look at the faults of others in a way that ignores our own faults becomes a diversion by the way in a way that does not allow us to take care of the difficulties that we have face and so a teacher a parent a pastor must always be aware of the temptation to be in some way open to that diversion that allows us to be hypocrites let's clean up what is in our own life first of all before we try to correct others the second thing that we see here is that image of the good tree we know from the story of creation that god made all things good it's important for us to keep in mind that those under our charge are really made good by god and so our task is always to call the good out of them i remember that famous line of father flanagan from boys town who said there's no such thing as a bad boy there was a coach i knew who was also a formator in in a high school who would always correct those who were under his charge whether they were players or students and he would say to them it's easy if you know how and then he would teach them so there has to be a presumption of goodness in others calling the goodness out of them and rather than just looking at in an isolated way the faults that they have thinking that they are at root very bad but there is a goodness to them to call out and finally it is the task of all of us to help others and that business of looking and pulling out the splinter in the other eye other's eye is so important because that still is a test jesus doesn't say that a person should not help correct the faults of others but in order to do that you have to draw near to that person in order to see what's in the eye of another you have to be very close and so the work that we do as pastors priests teachers always has to come about by drawing near to people getting to know them seeing what their life is about so today as we hear this gospel once again it's an inspiration for all of us who have positions of leadership in our families and our schools and our parishes and society to make sure that as we carry on this test we be aware of that temptation of hypocrisy but also that we have real confidence that there's goodness in other people and that we as we correct them as we help them along we always draw close rather than distance ourselves from them and it is that way that we fulfill the commands of the gospel today and i also would ask that as we pray today for the people in ukraine we keep them close to our hearts we keep them in mind and in our prayer so that there will be peace in the world again i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified dying was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting trusting in the goodness of god's creation and in his providence to make all things work for good we offer these prayers that the church may always cultivate the goodness in people confident that the living god is at work and bringing all to salvation in christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that as teachers pastors and parents guide the young they may be blessed with patience and the joy that comes in seeing their efforts bear great fruit we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that as we come together in the annual catholic appeal to share responsibility in carrying the burdens of others may god's promise to be close to those in need be fulfilled we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the peace of christ may overcome all war and violence especially in ukraine we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer as we begin the season of lent this ash wednesday may god prompt us to keep the need for peace and justice in our world close to our hearts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving god as you draw us closer to you in this eucharist may we draw closer to each other as we praise you the father of us all with one voice through christ our lord pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to god the father almighty oh god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as sign of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant as a source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for when your children were scattered afar by sin through the blood of your son and the power of the spirit you gathered them again to yourself that a people formed as one by the unity of the trinity made the body of christ and the temple of the holy spirit might to the praise of your manifold wisdom be manifest as a church and sow in company with the choirs of angels we praise you with joy we acclaim is [Music] [Applause] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is a chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks and you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me your unworthy servant and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] my pray as jesus taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit let us offer each other a sign of christ peace lamb of god we take witnesses of the world have mercy on us lamb of god we take away the world have mercy on us lamb of god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the roof lamb only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] an act of spiritual communion my dear jesus i believe that you are present in this most holy sacrament i love you above all things i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot receive you sacramentally come spiritually into my heart i embrace you unite myself holy to you never allow me to be separated from you amen let us pray nourished by our saving gifts we beseech your mercy lord that by this same sacrament with which you feed us in the present age you may make us partakers of life eternal through christ our lord amen i want to thank everyone who so generously pledged to the annual catholic appeal there will be a short video detailing some of the good work that is being done because of that generosity and if you haven't had a chance yet to do so please do so through your parish as they want to make their goal it's a way of helping your pastor achieve that goal but also of helping so many other people also i want to take this opportunity to ask your prayers the holy father has asked on ash wednesday that we sacrifice and fast and pray for peace in ukraine as you know with the beginning of lent this wednesday ash wednesday we are asked to abstain from meat but also to fast on that day and then of course on each friday to abstain from meat during the season of lent let us use those sacrifices uh to be in solidarity with those who suffer from war those who suffer from the terror of having their nation attacked it's important for us to stand together with them and to ask the lord to give us the gift of peace and inspire leaders to have peace in their hearts again thank you for being with us today we continue to pray for each other the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you father son and holy spirit amen go in peace thanks be to god [Music] and is [Music] we are at immaculate conception school in south chicago in the mornings i like to come and greet the students when they're coming into the school and you can see their smile on their faces honestly it feels like we're all part of a family we rely on each other they tell you i really like being in school and when we don't have school i mean they they want to come back they want to come and they tell their parents that that they want to come back [Music] 85 percent of our students come from immigrant families one of the things that we also do here is we make sure that we celebrate you know all the cultures from the diverse ethnic groups that we have they learn from each other's cultures so that makes it a very nice environment in the classrooms because they learn from each other not only from the teachers but from their classmates i'm very proud of seeing how the students are growing in their faith if you have god in your life that is something that's always going to be there with you and you can carry that along and it will guide you and take you to places that you may not have known were there the annual catholic appeal has supported our school immaculate conception i don't even think that our school would be able to run without that help the good works here are made possible through the annual catholic appeal make your gift at annualcatholicappeal.com
