should christians use words like decree and declare and should that even be part of our vocabulary this is what is being taught in some of our churches today and i want you to take a look at this clip i decree and declare that you are pregnant with multi-million dollar corporations that are wall street friendly that's globally scalable i prophesied into your spirit i decree and declare your ministries are filled with multi-million dollar ceo corporate ownership i decree and declare you will never have to worry about sweating over a budget the only thing you will have to do is sweating over how you're going to spend the overflow i decree an abundance of finances is being released into the pew um if you believe it give your neighbor a high five so my friend this is proof that we at times can be well intended and even very sincere in what we're doing at the same time being misinformed and misled so i want to give you four reasons why decreeing and declaring is not something that we need to be doing as christians but towards the end of this video i'm going to tell you what you can decree and declare i know that sounds weird it sounds like i contradicted myself but it all makes sense later on in this video now before i get into this it might be helpful for us to define exactly what does it mean to decree something well according to the english dictionary to decree something means an official order issued by a legal authority so just so we're clear whenever we decree and declare something we are basically establishing ourselves as a legal authority and we are giving a command for something to happen now with that understanding reason number one is that decreeing and declaring is not biblical there is no biblical basis in the bible whatsoever that encourages us or commands us or gives us the right or the authority to decree or declare anything now there's a few passages of scripture that people try to use in order to try to suggest that we have this power but i'm going to show you how to debunk those in just a second the first is found in job chapter 22 verse 28 which says this thou shalt also decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee and the light shall shine upon thy ways now i feel like i'm starting to sound like a broken record here because most of the wrong theology that we have today is a result of taking one weird verse like this that's very hard to understand pulling it out of context and building an entire belief system on it here's the problem with job 22 28 in terms of saying okay well it says if you decree a thing it'll be established and so therefore you should do it you have to understand look at the context job chapter 22 is in a section of scripture where job and his three friends are sitting around trying to figure out why is it that job is suffering in this way and the reality is that none of them have any idea what god is up to all of them are off in their theology all of them are off in terms of trying to discern exactly what it is that god is up to in job's life the only one that has any sense is the the younger guy elihu that comes on a little bit later but the point is this why would you take one strange verse out of job 22 and build an entire theology around it knowing that this section of scripture is filled with three people actually four including job who really aren't sure of what god is doing and as a result they're just throwing statements out all over the place knowing that most of them really aren't consistent with what god is doing in job's life so that's the first one the second one is in romans chapter 4 verse 17 and it says this as it is written i have made you a father of many nations in the presence of him whom he believed god who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did and this is the whole idea of speaking things into existence or people who say hey you need to call that thing as that call that thing that was not as if it was right all that stuff but if you look at the context which i've stated many times in my videos this is talking about abraham and sarah they're not able to have children and it is god not abraham not sarah it is god who has the power to call those things that are not as though they are to speak life into sarah's womb so that she would have a child abraham and sarah are not going around speaking children into existence they're not saying abra isaac i speak you into existence because i want to have a child no it's god in this verse that does the calling and the speaking and bringing things into existence so we don't have that type of power now the third one is probably the one that's the strongest which is mark chapter 11 verse 23 and this one says i tell you the truth you can say to this mountain may you be lifted up and thrown into the sea and it will happen but you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart now on the surface if you just read this it sounds like jesus has given us a credit card and he's saying hey blank check hey if you want to just speak to that mountain speak to that unmovable thing and you'll hear people preach it speak to that cancer speak to that covet 19 speak to all these different things that are going on in your life speak to your marriage speak to your finances and it will just move right so if you if you listen to people who say these things it sounds good on the surface right now let's just say you don't even know what this verse means what do you do if you're a good bible student what you do is you go and see how does this verse line up with other verses in the new testament that talk about us being able to just make things happen with our words right so if you look at second corinthians chapter 12 verse 8 and 9 it says there that paul pleaded with the lord three times and he said hey i'm begging you to take it away each time god came back and said my grace is sufficient for you so was paul able to speak to his situation his sickness or whatever his thorn was and say oh just go away be cast into the sea and it will be removed did paul not able to do this because he didn't have enough faith or what about when paul was trying to heal trophamus of his sickness or when he wasn't able to heal epaphroditus was paul able to say i have belief i have faith and i'm going to speak to that sickness and it will be removed no so clearly by looking at other scriptures this does not necessarily give us a blank check to just speak things into existence so the first reason why decreeing and declaring is not uh something that we should do as christians is that there's no biblical basis for us doing it the second reason is that decreeing and declaring is not only not biblical it's not historical and what i mean by that is when you look at history there's no mention there's no examples of anyone in the bible that is saying i decree this i declare this by my words i'm going to speak this into existence it's going to happen you don't see that anywhere in the bible and you also don't see that throughout the entire uh history of christendom right the early church fathers weren't decreeing and declaring speaking things into existence and throughout christianity you don't see that so be very very careful whenever you start to practice certain things that you hear other people are doing that sound real good but you don't see any practice of it in the bible and none of it throughout church history that means it's probably a dangerous practice reason number three that decreeing and declaring is not only not biblical it's not historical it's not humble you see whenever we say i decree this to happen or i declare this to happen what we're doing but we're not realizing we're doing it is that we're putting ourselves in the place of god we are basically saying god you move off the throne for just a moment i'm going to sit on your throne and i'm going to decree and declare something so that it's done and then when i'm done decreeing and declaring you can come back on your throne it doesn't work like that guys like we don't order god around as if he's some sort of uh a flunky or something like that or he exists to meet our needs or that we're able to somehow manipulate what god uh was intending to do but if i keep speaking it keep speaking it keep speaking life speak life into that situation speak life to your cancer speak life to your finances speak life to your marriage speak life to your children all that foolishness that you hear people saying that somehow if we just speak speak speak speak speaking that somehow god's gonna be in heaven say oh okay wow this person has a lot of faith okay i'm just going to change my mind i'm going to do this it doesn't work like that guys like that's not what god is this for he doesn't exist just to do things that we want him to be done to do for us right so it's not humble for us to go to god and essentially command or give an order for god to do something when in reality it may not be god's will number four decreeing and declaring is not prayer listen the bible describes prayer as us communicating with god and making our petitions known to god but once we make our petitions known to god we leave them at the altar in the hands of a loving and sovereign god and saying god you know what i don't know if this is your will or not but lord i'm putting it in your hands i'm petitioning you that is what prayer is about that's how the bible describes prayer not us decreeing and declaring things now what can we decree and declare with all of that being said well if we want to decree and declare something we need to decree and declare a statement of fact let me give you an example so if i say i declare right now that i am unconditionally loved by the lord i can declare that all day right because that is a fact it's not something that's cause we're not causing something to happen by declaring that by us declaring that we're not causing god to love us we're stating a statement of fact we're declaring the fact that god has already told us that he loves us and so therefore um i can declare that or let's just say i declare and right now that i am forgiven for all of my sins in the name of jesus you can declare that all day right because by you declaring that you're just basically stating a statement of fact but you're not causing yourself to be forgiven because you are saying i declare that i am forgiven you're just stating something that's already happened right so those are the things that you can decree and declare but you can't cause something to happen by decreeing and declaring something so what are your thoughts on this idea of decreeing and declaring is that the same thing as name it and claim it blab it and grab it positive confession new age stuff or is it something different has this been something that you've seen in your church
