[Music] hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a disappearing nine-patch quilt if you google disappearing nine-patch you can see many many pictures of what this pattern looks like they all start off with a block like this that has nine patches but then you cut it up and make it disappear so then you can see a secondary pattern so all we need is some charm squares we're going to use three packages of charm squares we also need one dark accent and we need one light accent so grab your supplies and let's get started the first thing we need is some more five inch squares from our two accent fabrics [Music] we have both accent colors cut up into five inch squares so these are exactly the same size as our charm squares here so let's open this up and see what these look like because after all accents are just to highlight the print that you have in your charm set now Hoffman has got all of these pre-cut here and they're all folded up but they're just a beautiful selection of colors here so these are all the ones that are going to go with these squares now I'm gonna have to iron them all up and I did iron the accents both accents before I cut them and that way everything will stitch up in the same fashion because it will all have been ironed nice and flat the first thing we need to make actually the only thing we need to make is a lot of 9-patch blocks so we are going to put one accent in the middle then we're going to use four of these light accent colors then we need four of our charm squares it doesn't really matter which four you use but try to get a nice variety so since my whole pack here has a lot of brown and burgundy I might now pick one that has a little more color in it like that I like to stitch my Patrick so that it stays together like this I'm going to use a quarter inch seam and I'm gonna leave that on the machine now I'm gonna grab the next pair here then the final pair and leave these together don't snip them apart now all we have to do is open this up and add the last piece this way my rows stay together and I don't have to worry about anything getting out of order now all the rows are stuck together by these little threads in the middle now we will finger press everything toward the dark prince and so our rows together these seam allowances are facing opposite directions and it's real easy to tell if they're matched you can feel with your fingers actually the seams will butt up right against each other it's real easy same thing here you can feel if they're matched one last seam here same procedure match up your intersection and just stitch that on these seam allowances I'm gonna press away from the center because most of it is now again against the dark fabrics now I'm gonna keep making blocks like this with all the rest of these pieces if your charm set has something that looks exactly like your Center Square just don't use it so there's always a few in here that I won't use that's a little bit dark a little bit bluer some I just don't like as well and some perhaps maybe it's too light so if it's almost the same color as your background you might put that aside that one will probably work but sometimes there's some that are too light so I'm not going to need every one of these so feel free to put aside the ones that won't work as well we have all of our ninth patch blocks done and now it's time to make them start disappearing so here's what you're going to do we are going to cut this in half both ways the easiest way to do that is to put your two and a quarter inch line here right on your seam line because this block finished is four and a half inches so half of that is two and a quarter so I'm gonna line that right up on the scene very carefully and I'm gonna cut right through the patchwork now just leave it right here turn your ruler to in a quarter-inch line again one more slice so here's where the disappearing comes in I'm going to turn this corner one turn and this corner two turns are all the way around and let's turn this one this direction now we have a completely new block the 9-patch has disappeared and this is our new block I'm going to stitch this one block together and I'm going to keep this right next to my sewing machine as I make all the other blocks and I'm gonna make sure that every corner of the block is turned exactly the same way because I need all the blocks to be exactly the same now go ahead and cut up all of the rest of your blocks and then turn the corners and make them all exactly like this one once you have all the blocks stitched together give them a final pressing it's basically just this cross seam that needs to be pressed but it does help for the rest of the steps if this is nice and flat now that you have all the blocks ironed up and in a stack all facing the same way don't twist any of them make sure they're all facing the same way you can lay them out and you can pretty quickly see the secondary patterns starting to pop up right away and the bigger you get the more you see the pattern it's really really fun now if you lay your blocks out and you end up with two of the same color really close to themselves just trade just move this guy over here and move this one back but remember don't don't spin them keep them facing the same way one of the really fun parts of sewing this together now in two rows is you don't have to match these seams at all no matching here except right in the middle and then of course where the blocks come together so this is gonna stitch up really quickly into a whole quilt I have some extra blocks left over these are ones I didn't use in the patchwork because they were too light or too close to the accent color or just didn't work so I only had I have twenty-four blocks left over I could make a few more Patrick blocks but I think I'm gonna make some sort of fun border and I'll probably put it in the middle of the back of the quilt so I'm gonna start stitching them together and see what it makes now that the whole quilt is done you can't see the nine patches at all they've completely disappeared what we have instead are these really nice bands of bigger squares and then those little squares so it's a completely different pattern does not look like an eye patch very simple to make but complicated looking this went together really fast it's a very fast project and I took the extra squares that I had and I used them on the back side so I made two little mortar things I cut the back diagonally here and just stuck it in there so this is very interesting when you flip your quilt if you're sleeping with it just adds a little just on the back I used a light border a little bit darker border and quilt is all done so one of the fastest projects I've ever made thanks for watching our tutorial today on the disappearing nine-patch now if you like our channel please subscribe happy quilting
