hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a quilt it's called spangled i've had a lot of requests to make this pattern and i could see why because it's very interesting it's got these star shapes in it and i would really like to see how this is done and i'm going to try it in a different color combination so this is a jelly roll pattern and i've got these jelly rolls here they have mostly light strips a few dark ones but i'm going to take those out and then i'm going to use a black background where the pattern is showing light so i'm almost making the complete opposite of the pattern and let's see how that's going to turn out one of the things i like best about cozy quilt designs patterns is that they come with multiple sizes now i want to make the twin size today and so i'm going to need 48 of the jelly roll strips now this jelly roll like most it's got 40 strips so there's not quite enough to make the quilt i could get a whole nother jelly roll and pull out the 48 i like put the rest aside for another project but sometimes what i like to do is get a yard of a fabric that i like really well that is either in the jelly roll or coordinates with the jelly roll and cut the extra strips i need from this yard this is a really good way for using a fabric that you just love sometimes i get a fabric i really like a lot and i want to use a lot of it in my quilt so all i have to do then is cut extra pieces in the same pre-cut that the pattern calls for then i can have my favorite fabric sprinkled throughout the quilt so let's work on cutting these jelly roll strips you always want to iron up your fabric before you cut you can see a couple little wrinkles in here and if you don't have it flat it's hard to get it cut correctly i'm going to go ahead and fold this in half because i can cut four layers of fabric pretty easily if you only like to cut two layers at a time then you can leave it open and not folded now it's real important to have your fabric on one of the lines of your cutting board if you have your fabric crooked like this when you cut your strips they're all going to end up with what we call an elbow in the middle so be sure they are on one of the lines on your cutting board this way before you start to cut once it's nice and straight on the cutting board you want to do a nice clean straight edge here we want to line up our plastic ruler on one of the lines on the cutting board running this way and it's real important to have the plastic ruler not move as you cut so i like to take a weight this is a little five pound dumbbell and that's going to hold my ruler down very securely at the far end now we can cut off that crooked bit there and we've got a nice straight edge to start with i'm simply going to move the ruler over two and a half inches and put that weight back down there and now i've got a couple of jelly roll strips so i'm just going to keep cutting using the same method and everyone will be straight and when we open these up they're completely straight even in the middle we have no bend there [Applause] now let's open up our jelly roll and see which of these strips we're going to use i'm not going to use the really really dark ones because they won't show up well against the background so let's see what we've got here they are mostly mostly light here let's see all right there we go so the ones we want to pull out are any of them that won't show up against this dark background so for sure i won't use these way too dark these ones are pretty dark this one's a little dark so we will use all of these along with these strips and you know you have the option on some of these if you like to turn them over and use the back side i sometimes do that to keep the whole theme going of lighter prints so when you have a dark print remember you can always turn it over and use the wrong side up so here's all the strips i need for the patchwork and the good news is they all are going to get sub cut exactly the same way now i can't give you all the sizes we're going to sub cut because it's not my pattern but cozy quilt designs patterns they're so easy to follow so it's got all the information you need right in there so that is all the cutting we need to do with our jelly roll strips now we can move on to cutting the background for our background we have options here we can either use yardage or we can use two and a half inch strips we can use a jelly roll if you use yardage you're going to cut it up into jelly roll strips and so i'm going to save myself a little time by using these here now these are all black these are all black boutique it looks like a solid it's almost solid and i will often mix batiks along with prints so this will make a really nice background and all we have to do is make a few simple sub cuts all right all of the cutting is done the next step is to mark a diagonal line on the back of both of these smaller background pieces here now this one i'm going to line it up on two of the lines on my cutting board then i'm going to take my plastic ruler which has lines on it because i want to draw from this corner down here but it's hard to get the angle perfect i don't know what the angle is except for i've got 45 degree angles on my ruler here so here's the 45 degree angle and i can see it looks like a 45 degree angle there and so i'm just going to slide this down so i can see the corner and draw a light line here now i'm using a chalk pencil i'm using a white chalk pencil because i've got dark fabrics here obviously if your background was light you could use a dark pencil on it but you want to keep the light you want to keep the line fairly light you don't need to do a real dark heavy line now these smaller squares they're pretty easy we can just go from corner to corner just like that so i'm going to go ahead and mark them all up all right i've got all the pieces we marked and all the printed strips taking them all to the sewing machine let's start with these this is the smaller of the rectangles here so we're going to take one of these in one of these marked pieces and this is going to go right on top of that piece and we're going to want to stitch right along the drawn line so i'm going to turn it here and i'm going to make sure everything is matched up and if we were to lift this up we would see that that line ends right in the corner there now i'm going to stitch right on the line or even a very hair towards that side of the line and i'll show you why when we open this up we want this strip to be one long piece and it is but sometimes when you stitch right on the line because it does create a little bulk when you fold it makes the piece not fit perfect so open it up and see if that makes one big long piece then you know you've got it done correctly the next piece we need to sew is the square on the longer rectangle now this one's real easy it just fits on right here and again stitch right on that line or slightly to the outside of it you can always check and see if you've done it perfectly by opening it up and seeing if all those raw edges match up and they do so i'm going to go ahead and stitch all these pieces together once they're all stitched up we want to iron these corners so for these long ones we're just going to press that over there it a little steam and then trim off the back two layers so that you've got just a quarter inch of seam allowance left and i like to just use a sharp pair of scissors here so now that looks like a nice rectangle the shorter rectangles it's got kind of an l shape here again we're going to open that up makes one nice long piece press it and then trim off this little triangle once you have all those stitched ironed and trimmed we're heading back to the machine and this time we've brought this one last background piece with us one of these is going to go in the center of the block then we're going to use a piece here with a small triangle over here and then i'm going to grab another one of those but a different print it's going to go over there then we need a couple of these that have the longer black piece let's put that one there and then we'll put this one here so that is what the block looks like stitching them together could not be any easier they're all the same length we're just going to put these two together and stitch all the way down there's no matching no intersections just one long straight seam and all of the seams are going to be pressed towards the center of the block so i'm pressing it this way i'm just opening it up and pulling my fingernail or even the pad of my finger right down that seam now this would go back here so now we'll put that piece on there again nothing to match all you have to do is get the corners lined up stitch all the way down and again press towards the center so now this seam both of these two seams they're getting pressed towards the center so all the seam allowances are going toward the center now all i have to do is give it a quick press and make all the rest of the blocks exactly like this okay i've got all the blocks done and i'm ready to start laying out the quilt it's very easy to lay it out the blocks just go two different ways the first one goes up the next one goes sideways and we go up and then we go sideways and then i'm going to keep laying them out until we see that secondary pattern start to pop out now we've gone from this to this it's quite a bit different it almost looks like a completely different pattern i'm always interested to see what happens when you play around with color values and this has a completely different look you still see these big stars but the secondary pattern with the dark it's just a little bit different than what shows on the pattern now i'm going to sew the blocks together get a couple borders on it and get it onto the quilting machine i've got the top all done it's on the machine and it's time to pick out a thread color now the quilt is all neutrals so any of these colors will work and so let's take them up to the quilt and see what looks the best so i normally like the thread to blend in with the patchwork very well and i still want it to blend in here but i'm thinking i might actually use the black so the black it's going to blend with all of these prints it's really not going to show it's going to show a little bit there it's going to show a lot in the border but it's not going to show in this nice deep background we've got this is another good color very neutral now that's not going to show in really any of the lights but it's going to show quite a bit here and i think that might fight with that now this is a good one that's right in the middle it's still going to show a little in the black won't show in the light but you know what i'm going to try to be brave i'm going to go with the black for the quilting pattern i wanted something that was a little bit fancier this is very ornate it's called simply whimsical and i really like it because it's got some flower shapes nice leaves and i like these circle parts [Applause] [Applause] so look what we've done we've taken this quilt pattern and turned it into this now you can really see these windmills right here it's almost like they're light and they're being framed by all this dark it really makes them pop i gotta say while i was stitching it i really wasn't sure how the quilt would turn out i wasn't sure if i liked it because the dramatic color change between the dark and light is so much different than what the pattern shows but now that it's done i'm absolutely loving it i like the quilting pattern which blends in very nicely in the patchwork but on the borders and on the back so the back i used the same solid fabric that i used on the border and this is a quilt all by itself so if someday you want to have a different look on your bed you can flip the whole thing over and get a completely new look size wise 76 by 96 now the pattern calls it a twin but that's a really big twin and there are four other sizes so there's lots of choices to make size-wise thanks for watching our tutorial today we hope you enjoyed it now we're going to have a quilt giveaway this is one called lake views and we did a tutorial on how to make this i used some little panels and then jelly roll strips to make all
