hi i'm alex archbull and i've been buying and selling antiques since i was nine years old from basements to scrap yards i'll look just about anywhere i can to find lost antiques and collectibles and sometimes i'll go big and buy everything with my wife and kids we run an antique shop in edmonton alberta canada filled with some of the most unique items we can find i never know what's going to happen or who i'm going to meet this is our life this is our adventure and this is curiosity from home honey [Music] good morning everyone i was out this morning at the auction house dropping some stuff off when i got the call that uh the fellas that are doing the water line installation and sewer installation arrived at my shop and they want to start doing some work which means jackhammering out it's gonna be noisy today jackhammering out part of my basement uh i am open today by the way so there's any customers in there while there's guys you know plowing at the basement and they've got to dig a hole to put the water lines in i can see them over there i'm just gonna meet with them and uh hopefully before the end of the day we'll have our infrastructure more or less ready to go with the new shop this is the easy part safety fence is going up to make sure none of my uh regular children customers that come through here fall into any kind of hole we're gonna be digging soon um was walk through it ever so kindly by that gentleman right there who told me what's going on i'm gonna sneak past before i get fenced in here uh these lines represent where they're gonna be kind of cutting the dirt down with the uh with the excavator they're going to draw the main pipe the main line right out this way it's going to be activated and dug all the way down and carry forward to where i have my ever so professional piece of wood sticking out of the ground which represents the hole that the sewer pipe has to be and that's going to be the uh the commode that's going to be where the bathroom is hard to imagine one day i might be sitting there using that but so it will be um on the other side of the bathroom is going to be a furnace room and where this little furnace room is we have to have a water line coming up because there's going to be a hot water tank and other things and we can run the water off of there and bring it over other places but for now we have to get the utilities in and finally around the corner you can see this little line here we're going to be cutting back right to about this spot because they're going to be teeing off of the uh gas meter coming down the wall down here and then it goes underground and that's gonna be going uh right to the edge of the property where the back of the building is gonna be so lots of fun stuff going on um i am finding out when our other uh when our cement is actually being poured hopefully in about a week or two here after that's done we can start thinking about a building so today while we're uh open these guys are going to be downstairs jackhammering out in the basement because they have to actually run the line underground from uh underneath where the basement be to uh under the window there and out the side at any rate it's gonna be a uh a lot of work for them and a lot of noise for me but even if we do scare off some customers today i have a lot of work to do because we still are getting ready for a big auction sale and i've got to take the last of my stuff in so throughout the day today i'm just going to be walking around and finding a final 50 items to take an auction but we'll do a little follow-up in a little bit and see how things progress fun to see things moving forward at least the guys were nice enough to lay down some tarps so they don't make a big mess and then it leads right to this hole that is the basement i'll show you guys what's going on down here so here we are in the basement people always say why don't you use the basement well it's only you know it's not even six feet it's probably five feet you have to really lean over down here it's only purpose is really to house the hot water tank and the furnace and apparently they have lots of storage down here one time i have a couple doors but that's about that so there's my pipe they are gonna have to go [Music] all the way over to that wall and um then it goes down and out the bottom now hopefully that doesn't cause any extra strain or stress on the structure because that would really stink um but i'm sure these guys know what they're doing and they've done it before so i'm gonna leave them to it today i'm gonna stay out of their hair and uh let them do their work down here you got her to fit down there oh yeah and they disappear with the jackhammer into the basement because i don't want anybody falling down the hole and the guys have to do work in construction i've decided to caution tape off that little area so customers cannot go to the back of the store today that's all right we still will be open to the front and there's lots to see up here what's they saw something they wanted the other day i can always wiggle my way back here and go get it i just want them to be safe and want the workers not to be trouble too much when they're trying to do their work down there i've got 30 minutes before we open and things are starting to take shape downstairs so i'm gonna uh start getting some stuff moved around in here before they start jackhammering it's hard to believe with how full the front of the store is and the back of the store frankly that i was able to take uh nearly 300 items to auction already what i have to do while the guys are working downstairs is go through some of these cases maybe thin out a few of the toys maybe bring out you know a couple cameras i've got some of those uh we need basically another 50 or so more items to put through the sale um before we can say we've got it pretty well where we need it to be so this morning i'm just basically wandering around and trying to find little items that i think will make a good fit for the auction sale maybe i'll put some of these old dinky toys through i'm gonna have to start making my list and getting them set aside now holy cow i'm guessing that's the jackhammer well i don't know how long that's gonna go on for at least i'm not open just yet but i have a feeling it's going to be a noisy day what do you expect there's something going on down there and it's in a nice little rectangle [Music] you find buried treasure let me know i have descended my basement steps to see what the guys have been doing down here i'm going to come around the corner and there's the jackhammer they have excavated this big hole and that's where they're gonna run the new pipe so on the other side of that wall they have to dig it up to the same sort of depth kind of curious i know if they found anything in here there's you know you never know this was buried over 70 years ago whatever is down here so it could be something cool but what we did discover was that my original cast you can kind of see it down there see how there's water that's because there is a hole uh in my cast pipe now i'm going to come around the other side to show you this whole time i've had a cracked pipe right there that's my uh my water drain my sewer pipe now they said because there's so much stuff packed around it it didn't actually cause any damage it didn't leak out that bad but it's a really good thing that i got this done because i had no idea that was leaking and probably creating some havoc but what happens is over the years buildings settle and raise and lower with the frost rising and it can put extra strain on it and that piece just it broke so luckily that's going to be fixed in the meantime we've got all this debris here that they've been hauling up in buckets and i can hear the guys upstairs working outdoors so let's go see what's happening outside looks like they've started digging good sized trench hopefully they take all that dirt away after we're filling back in so this is the scene in the backyard right now he's excavating a trench down and i'm kind of curious to know if he's dug anything up because we've had all sorts of artifacts including a gold coin come out of this yard and i am really interested to see if he comes across maybe the stash of the old garbage dump or anything like that i'll ask the guys maybe after he shuts it down if they find anything neat but yeah you can see they've had to go down probably about six feet or so to get to that same depth where the basement is and he's still digging maybe they'll take a lunch break and i'll come and i'll snoop around i'll look through the dirt the one unexpected drawback of having someone do your sewer lines in the building is that you can't use the bathroom here i've had customers all day so i've been able to leave i'm hoping that i'll get a chance to put it back in 15 sign and run like crazy to the nearest service station because my teeth are swimming but um i am getting some important work done around here too much information maybe but this is the reality of today the guys have had to stop for a minute because the little excavator that they had rented for today blew a hydraulic line which means that it's not scooping not doing what it needs to do so a technician is coming out i guess from cooper equipment rentals if that's where they got it from and he's going to come and repair it on site here uh in the meantime we've got you know most of a hole dug and all i can think about is that i should get zach or someone out here with a metal detector so i'm sure there's going to be something cool in this pile of dirt this yard has given us lots of stuff and i'm sure if i keep my eyes peeled i'll be able to find something bottle or who knows what probably what's more impressive is that i have three feet of good topsoil of black earth i don't know if you can see that thick layer right there that's about three feet thick of black soil it's kind of a shame this is extremely good land and very good dirt and i'm just gonna be putting a building on top of it but i'm not a farmer mind you i probably will put a little bit more in the backyard here once we're done construction aside from my little fruit trees and things that are going there but for now it keeps getting trampled because well it's a construction site i haven't been able to go anywhere so far yet today one of our customers was nice enough to bring me lunch from one of my favorite restaurants northern chicken here in town they do delicious chicken if you ever talk to my niece alyssa and i guess my nephew-in-law peter they loved it when they were here so i'm happy that they brought me some of my favorite food i'm going to give them some free drinks on the house too because they're outside having a picnic and these are the culprits that brought me lunch so why don't you tell everybody your names and uh and what you're doing i'm bill gackle this is my cousin from austria sandra sandra you're from canada now she's from canada exactly yeah originally from austria yeah and you guys were nice enough i was trapped here because we're doing all this construction right next to you and you brought me lunch so thank you very much i don't know how peaceful it's gonna be with all the construction happening but uh enjoy this is what i was excited about um it's it's garlic bread essentially thick texas toe style garlic bread with a big piece of fried chicken memphis style and some coleslaw it's super good and if you don't believe me well you're gonna have to come to canada and try one these guys do an amazing job somewhere in there there's a pickle too but really good flavoring on their seasoning i am very excited about this meal everything is up and running again they're just getting ready to uh connect it to the building so he's got to trench it over to the wall and then we should be good to go for them to start laying pipe now if i saw that on my security cam at midnight i might be a little bit more concerned he must be getting down there pretty good haven't you felt it touched the building yet okay well we had some good news they repaired the broken water line and they said i'm able to use the bathroom now woohoo but they've got all the uh the broken cast iron taken out you can see the clump of it sitting there and they've actually gone back to the main line a fair bit too so that'll last me quite a few years glad it's all repaired now in the meantime i've been working pretty much non-stop getting my final list put together for the auction i've got my car loaded up and when i get to the auction house later today i'll show you everything i took down it's quite a variety and actually as i walk around i'm impressed with the stuff that's there and i'm not just saying that because it came from my shop it's going to be a good sale and i think there's just a little bit of everything for everybody [Music] okay it's time for a little bit of fun i want to show you a couple neat things that i got in the other day this time i was taking things into the auction and somebody had a box and these toys were inside of it and i figured well if they weren't cheap enough i'd buy them and i'll show you why these toys all date to 1940s 1950s kind of era that's a met toy key wound a little bus clockwork bus and it looks like it has uh articulating wheels so you can change the whether you want to go straight or turn this is another little clockwork car same thing the front wheels actually turn so you can make it drive in circles you can see it's starting to spin a lot of times a clockwork engine like this deteriorates and or gets over sprung and spring breaks off and you're out of luck but i think what we're gonna find uh i'm gonna see if i can find a key for this guy is if they're in as decent shape as they look on the outside which is pretty good we might find that the inside's good too this is a volkswagen you can tell it's an early one because it's got the split rear window on the back that would be early 1950s possibly even earlier than that look at that torpedo kind of shape cool cool piece made in uh u.s zone germany so that would tell me this would date just after world war ii so this is a very early piece um but the cable drive on the back here let's see if i can get the end this is how you operate front steering wheel so instead of a remote control car like what we're used to now see that the front wheels turn left and right based on you pushing in this little uh spring lever so we are gonna try after digging through my keys that i have these are clock keys but they are basically the same thing as a clockwork key for a toy we're gonna wind this guy up and see if it still works now that it's wound up there's just one thing left to do let's try it out oh there it goes see if i push the button in you can make it turn circles apparently crash into my wall we'll get it going that way and then you can turn i guess if it gets too far away you just pull it back but a fun little toy early remote control and it's in working condition i finally have my last load of stuff brought over to the auction and i can tell you this has been a lot of work to bring the sale together but we have a ton of great stuff i'm going to give you guys a bit of a walk through now to show you some of the cool things that are going up for sale on september 26th i think it should be live for bidding as early as this coming week but it's going to be quite a sale it's one i would want to come to if it was my own stuff let me show you this is my latest batch that i brought in so we've got the 50 spartan tv i have a beautiful honor uh ariette accordion in the box some king george tobacco tins camera of course the santa fe engine that i got in the uh hoarder house of treasures out in the country um space ranger playset that's a really neat piece that's from marks in the 50s on the bottom there it's a actual flying toy you can fly around and pick up people there's an autographed chief white elk postcard an authentic hide a piece pipe which we've got to find a nice spot for here and of course this is west coast indigenous if you look at the bottom it's signed by the artist that's a good piece i see they've got some furniture in sewing machines that is a headlamp off of a steam train circa you know turn of the century turn of the last century um the the reason why it looks so fresh and new is that the lady i bought it from it was in her family for over 80 years and she had it nickel plated so they took it apart and had it restored but it is an original steam engine uh or locomotive uh headlamp and you can see this got the mounting brackets the bars on the back where it slides in really neat coffee mill um there's a an original salvador deli wood cut right there divine comedy neat piece uh wilmot black powder double-barreled shotgun and you don't need a license for that because it is from the 1800s and it's black powder the only thing can tell with it is that it's missing the the hammers are not on there but you can get that easy enough they sell the replacement parts little snuff horn and of course some of mary's pottery this was a nice piece this is um a necklace that she made it's glazed and she put a little mb on the back instead of probably because she did it in a different style um there's a mb that she marked on it or her m with the underline um but it's not stamped because it was probably too thin for that but we're including with it this ceramic decoration technique book that is signed by mary as well so that's going to go as a lot the sphere which for whatever reason she did in two halves and they've been put together um so there's a sphere um some of her early pieces like test pieces like her unglazed pot this was one i actually had kept at home because it's so beautiful this i have it upside down i don't know how she intended for it to sit normally it's a pot as you can see but i think it's lived most of its life sitting on the uh on the other side she's got a little bit of wear there i'm gonna leave it like that but she would sit there in the living room and she would polish these with little round stones that she found in the river and she'd sit there while other people might have been reading a book or watching tv she'd be sitting there just rubbing and polishing and getting this just glossy and smooth mary what a lovely job you did now one of mary's friends peggy here she passed away at a fairly young age this was one of her early pieces this is from the 1960s a founding member of of the arts and crafts society in alberta and mary wrote on this i remember had a note when i got it it said rare glaze and this was part of mary's personal collection it wasn't a piece that she ever had offered for sale but it's one that i think is an artist she probably traded for uh this is mary's hand impression so where she took the clay and squeezed it that's mary's hands right there and there's her little finger marks and then she glazed it afterwards and a couple other little lots where some assorted little pots janolettes and the little mary borgstrom piece another couple uh test those are test plates to test on the glaze there's two of those so she was obviously testing out different types of glazes those are her browns and a little bit more chunky finishes and then her whites or creams so those three in this little anthropomorphic looking sculpture that she did we had a really big one if you recall i found it in the front porch there was a massive version of that that she she'd made probably one of the more special pieces is this this voz not only has the original artist sketch it has a picture of mary taking it out of the kiln in her backyard where her pottery studio was and then of course the pot itself it's a beautiful primitive piece made in the primitive fashion she was very much inspired by the art that the indigenous peoples did and the pottery in the way that they would have done it years ago so very very fun piece yeah and other than the some pottery and there's actually a few more uh marrying people oh i should come over here i'm being scatterbrained i'm going to talk to you about a couple more mary's pieces there is one really big bowl right there pot and a beautiful black primitive bowl that is iconic mary borgstrom right there that would have been done probably around 1970 or so the black glaze very um kind of southern american indigenous feel to it and i'm sure that she drew some inspiration from that and from mexican pottery of the time but she did a lovely job and it's just a beautiful piece with natural kiln cracks from her open fire technique this piece does seem to have had some repairs to it but it is intact and it's a cool piece too of course both signed we have a really cool gramophone up top next to the drum that guy right there i have a complete uh vintage canadian postal uniform boy it's there's just so much stuff and we get into the stuff in the showcase here which is where i was going to go before a hat see it says rms titanic on it it's from the 1980s but it was actually given to one of the survivors of the titanic at a dinner back in the 80s they were doing dinners for titanic survivors and if you attended you would get a hat and it is an actual sailor's hat with the rms titanic banding and it's just a beautiful piece if you're a titanic fan that's a really cool item some professional honer cx-12 harmonicas goliath harmonicas pocket knives beautiful little uh lighter airplane inspired lighter coal miners lantern uh autographed hockey pictures um there are concert posters bill evans trio and this one which used to be in my dad's office for many years this was a family piece my dad had that for years and years and years i don't know where he got it from but uh it's the beatles featuring rory storm and the hurricanes at the tower ballroom you'd have to look it up to figure out what date that is because i don't think it's dated but really neat piece um and then we've got you know this isn't mine but somebody brought that in a cool typewriter with the wide cradle for doing uh ledger work and the cauli dog which is featured in my store many many times i'm going to miss it it's life size it's been a good companion a beautiful this is a punch clock a time clock that would have been you know around 1900 or so it's english made i had this hanging on the wall in the shop and i had to move it when we brought zoltar up to the front but if you wind it it does work and it keeps perfect time so whoever's going to buy that it is a good working piece i've used it before we've got this is a little cream can and you can see somebody's painted a little ship scene on it some of the clear coats coming off but it's nicely done folk art this is an original 50s pedal car that someone has done kind of a home amateur restoration on but still a nice thing and it's even got the little bell which still works fun you can actually use it put your grandkids in it or put your kids in and let them ride around um this was a piece that i picked up in colorado with my sister when i went down the first time this is a jean autry guitar with the automatic cord player now um the back of the neck had a bit of repair to it i can't remember where but it had a bit of repair on the neck at some point but to be expected with an old piece like that but how cool gene autry in the original cardboard case it's meant to look like alligator skin and it even has the cord selector on it too super fun should we keep walking let's keep walking around the corner so these are other people are consigning and getting ready there's a lot more than just my stuff in the sale but i would probably say that 75 or 80 percent of it's gonna be our stuff um this is a canadian forces that's a uh either helicopter or fighter pilot helmet with all the visors those are all your extra visors right there this is a neat piece this is an 1800s campaign lantern so it folds it collapses and this would have been used wartime you put like a candle or wick in it so when you carry it around you get the glow through the cloth when you set it down the light actually protrudes through the top very very early piece um hand hammered copper this is old old it might even be 1700s we look inside there's actually a note in here and it's uh it's a note from france and it's dated i think from the late 1600s i'm gonna leave it in there and that's gonna be surprised for whoever ends up with that but there is i think a 1600s french note in there you'll have to translate it oh there's another mary pop there's the really big platter that we had and i mean big it's probably like a foot and a half across that's a big piece uh her friend jano let's that's one of her bulls presentation hatchet millennium falcon because why not the uh mystery clock that i picked up i plugged it in and it was working however the cord looks a little afraid so i'd probably put a new cord on it i'm just gonna step very carefully oh right over here we've got a 1920s prestil fire truck um whedon steam engine let's go steam engine uh that's the original log book from the ss lexington which was a pre-world war one or world war one era aircraft carrier and it is now a wreck uh it was sunk in 1942 and is the bottom of the ocean but somebody survived that rack and brought that log book with them and it's all hand done in leather there's not much in terms of log entries it was probably classified but really really neat piece look at that look at the artwork the sailor did uh his best to try and uh pay homage to it it's got the eagle it's got the ship on it that's a neat piece if you're not excited by history well you should be uh boxes of old comic books porcelain english spittoon world war ii era machete uh napoleon's replica dress sword see that they said this is not your average auction mike bossie i don't know if this was a game used jersey or not but it is a stalin dean jersey from massachusetts it is in the size of my boss he would have likely worn however i can't guarantee that but it is from the 1980s and it is a nice early piece all kinds of stuff and some fun little things like the fisher price castle some old radios projectors uh nice little this is kind of a cute thing this is a medical box it says chicago surgical and electrical i think it was actually for putting uh test tubes or you know syringes or something and it would probably sanitize them but as a little decorative piece it's just a nice little box with a frosted glass front and a latch on it so somebody might think that's cool my fortune teller lady and the tin remember this i had a lot of people ask about that this is a marks 10 nights play set in the original pin going up mad monster castle in the box the sneezing bear which i just picked up with the little box of kleenex the hot wheels wheel full of hot wheels um boy you know oh a sign jackie stewart picture jackie stewart if you're into racing that's a really neat piece to have an original um i said be an advertisement for a little hit miss engine i guess it's a magnet bypass engine but still the five-star final reporter game that we got from 1937 with all its little pieces in there and you can see the little lot numbers that are on here that means that they've lauded them and they're going to be going up available for bidding online right away the fisher price set with all little people inside we've got vintage style rotary phones art nouveau bronze statue with a nice little base there um diecast cars and even the star trek enterprise i don't know if it still talks or not it's meant to talk might might need batteries it was working when it yeah the batteries are probably dead in it but still pretty cool model kit of an mv augusta lots of lunch kits and lunch pails jars of pennies um eric hartman was a world war ii german pilot that's signed by him roy rogers and dale evans signed pictures mary pickford signed picture the magic robot game am i talking a lot yes i'm talking a lot but that's because there's a lot of stuff taiko street car set the a-team race set [Music] there's a parking meter orange rotary phone and it keeps going and going and going there is just so much stuff coca-cola push bar um little concert posters uh world war ii airplane propeller this is quite the sale and there is an awful lot of good stuff here [Music] this is the piece dated 1953 this is a very early run for picasso uh in the book of picasso ceramics by georges rumi you will find a picture of it on page 172 and it is entitled voz face in profile beautiful piece now we're going to get ready to uh do some pictures here i think before long and get it up and ready for sale so it's just an outstanding condition once we get it on the white background i'll get some better pictures of it green rover green rover let bitters come over i figured it was just about time for me to put the old land rover up for sale i wasn't really planning on keeping this one and instead of taking up room on the driveway i figured heck we'll bring it through the antique sail and see how it does it actually drove over here just fine i'm actually convinced after driving this that it's a pretty decent vehicle it drove here fine had lots of power turn those headlights off but what do you expect of an old 4x4 did great so if you're watching from home and you're wondering well what if i want to buy some of this stuff well you can you have to go to k auctions.ca and sign up for an account you can um this sounds like a commercial in part because it is um the reason why we're selling all this stuff off is because i'm trying to uh do the renovations on the building so we're selling off a whole bunch of things gonna get the cash together and i'm really hoping to get the rest of the foundation poured um for the united states other parts of canada they'll ship pretty much anywhere and that's why i use this auction house they're very flexible they're very professional and they'll get things shipped out to you in a short amount of time so check out the website sign up for the event it's going to be a
